Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and earning lists of words—the longer the list, the better. That's wrong.Language is for the exchange (交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地).They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too.Bernard saw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly."But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. There have been more than 100 million references to the word "tuhao" on social media since early September. It's being used to describe everything from the new People's Daily building, to expensive celebrity weddings full of bling, and the new gold-coloured iPhone. In Chinese "tu" means earth and "hao" means rich. To say someone is tuhao is to imply they come from a poor peasant background, and have made it rich quick — but don't quite have the manners, or sophistication to go along with it. It's like the term "nouveau riche", says Professor Steve Tsang at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies in Nottingham - but has even more negative meanings, suggesting a certain vulgarity(粗俗)."Tuhao" is actually an old word, dating back perhaps as far as the Southern Dynasty 1,500 years ago, but it has always meant something rather different. During the communist revolution, from the 1920s to early 1950s, it was widely used to refer to landholders and gentry who would bully those beneath them. This new usage of the term took off in September after a widely-shared joke about a rich, but unhappy man, who goes to a Buddhist monk for advice, expecting to be told to live a more simple life. The monk replies instead with the phrase: "Tuhao, let's be friends!"Chinese Internet users are highly creative in their use of language, and are constantly inventing, and re-inventing words as a way of getting past censorship(审查) rules. But in this case, its popularity seems to be down to the fact that it expresses China's changing society so well —many people sneer at those with wealth, but are secretly jealous.28.What is the best title of the passage?A. Tuhao, a new popular word in ChinaB. The long history of TuhaoC. The new usage of TuhaoD. Tuhao, a newly-invented Chinese word29.Which of the following may NOT be considered “tuhao”?A. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.“You are cheating,” the captain said to the sailor. “The fire’s warming you.”“But it’s half a mile away! ”said the sailor.“A fire’s fire,” answered the captain. “I have won.”The sailor came out of the water, and said, “Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can’t cook a chicken.”“I can, ”answered the captain.“If you cook this chicken,” said the sailor, “I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can’t, you will give me your ship.”The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, “Where’s the fire?”“There it is,” answered the sailor. “On the shore.”“But it’s half a mile away,” said the captain angrily.“ ‘A fire’s fire’ you said,” answered the sailor. “If it is enough to warm me in the water, it is enough to cook your chicken.”32.The captain got the sai lors’ wages ________.A. to buy a chicken for himselfB. and kept the money for future useC. by cheating himD. and said he would return the money soon 33.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages. Here is what they did. Researchers took 60 adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20. Then they gave the groups three different types of “listenandrepeat” learning conditions. Researchers had one group simply speak the words. They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm, or beat. And they asked the third group to sing the words. All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered. Why Hungarian, you ask? Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language. It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages, such as Italian or Spanish. After the tests were over, the singers came out on top. The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.Dr. Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3, or memorable 4, tune 5.Dr. Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages. On the University of Edinburgh's website Dr. Ludke writes, “This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listenandrepeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the d oor for future research in this area.”41.The “song” mentioned in the first paragraph is intended to ________. It’s a t en-hour flight for me to get home from Shanghai. When I got off the plane, I took photos of the blue sky and white clouds along the way. After two weeks, I returned to Shanghai. Much to my surprise, the blue sky in Shanghai that I liked before was not as blue as that in the US. I couldn’t help wondering what had happened.A few days later, I went to tour Waitan (a famous tourist attraction in Shanghai) by the Huangpu River with some of my friends. There we saw five Ferrari sports cars by the side of the road. The red and yellow cars looked so nice that everyone was looking at them. However, when I turned my head, I noticed the sky over Waitan, I was shocked to find that the buildings in the Lujiazui area on the other side of Huangpu River could hardly be seen. It was then that I realized that Ferrari cars could be bought with money, but a blue sky couldn’t.Shanghai is an important economic (经济的) and trade center in China. But how can you be a good friend at school?Listen—Listen when they are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.Help them—If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra(额外的)pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.Be there for them—Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve(值得)to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!________—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice creams, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. Instead of streets winding and twisting (迂回) as they do in London, they are all regular and well planned. The streets running north and south are called “avenues” and are numbered, e.g. 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, etc. The streets going east and west are called “streets” and are also numbered, e.g. 51st Street, 63rd Street. It is all much more logical (合理的) than London’s street names. But I couldn’t help thinking how much more interesting than these dull cold numbers are London’s illogical but colorful names of streets, e.g. “Bishopgate” (which is not a gate and hasn’t a Bishop in it); “Haymarket” or “Cornmarket” (where you won’t see any hey or corn) or “Poultry” (without a living chicken anywhere in sight) or “Threadneedl e Street” (where you won’t find little girls learning to sew).53. In the second sentence of the passage, “laid out” means ______.A. builtB. be putC. designedD. cut down54. The streets running from north to south are called _______.A. avenues in LondonB. streets in AmericaC. avenues in New YorkD. streets in London55. According to the writer’s opinion, ______.A. avenues and streets are the sameB. streets in America are better than avenues in EnglandC. streets in New York are better than those in LondonD. the writer didn’t agree with the London streets planners根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning experiences increase the length of time we will remember it.In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things weoverlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.8.What’s the main idea o f Paragraph 1?A.Stories for children are easy to remember.B.Children have a better memory than grown-ups.C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.D.People remember well what they learned in childhood.9.The author explains the law of overlearning by _______.A.presenting research findings B.setting down general rulesC.using examples D.making a comparison 10.According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is _______.A.a result of overlearning B.a special case of crammingC.a skill to deal with math problems D.a basic step towards advanced studies 11.What is the author’s opinion on cramming?A.It leads to failure in college exams. B.It’s helpful only in a limited way. C.It’s possible to result in poor memory.D.It increases students’ learning interest.Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were. Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test---unless the person cheats again.People lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and may be at home, too. Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they w ant to get good grades without spending time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating, even when there seems to be a good reason for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.If you were sick or upset about something the n ight before the day and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with you parents about how to balance swimming and school.A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解决办法) together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.12.The author thinks that when kids cheat in class, ______.A.it is unfair to other people. B.it does harm to their health. C.teachers should punish them. D.teachers shouldn’t stop them at once. 13.Some students like cheating mainly because______.A.the material in the test is very difficult.B.they want to do better than the others.C.cheating can make hard things seem very easy.D.they have little time to study their lessons.14.The fourth paragraph mainly tells us______.A.some kids can’t pass the test without cheating B.why kids cheat in the test. C.cheating isn’t a good idea.D.some kids don’t spend the time studying. 15.We can learn from the passage _______.A.cheaters are often thought highly ofB.people show no respect for those who cheat.C.parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble.D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice.二、七选五It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around — maybe because he or she moved to a different school or a different class.16.. Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and earning lists of words—the longer the list, the better. That's wrong.Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地).They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too.Bernard saw once wrote,"Foreigners often speak English too correctly."But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put communication first.21.Language is used to ________.A. express oneselfB. practise grammar rulesC. talk with foreigners onlyD. learn lists of words 22.Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he ________.A. never makes mistakesB. often makes mistakesC. can't avoid making mistakesD. always makes mistakes 23."Foreigners often speak English too correctly."This sentence means that ________.A. foreigners speak correct EnglishB. foreigners speak incorrect EnglishC. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rulesD. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English24.When we speak a foreign language, we should ________.A. speak in Chinese wayB. speak by the rulesC. speak to native speakersD. not be afraid of making mistakesBField Trip DayOn Friday, May 16, our class will take a field trip to North Park Zoo.
