Let Them Watch It
One hot night, w hen our new baby wouldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of : a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable (手提的) TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the screen. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behavior a meta phor(暗喻) for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read
to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read and they look down upon re ading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it! If television is much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight i t? Let them watch all they want!”

When Lew Alcindor was 13, and obviously still growing, a group of schools began offering him scholarships (奖学金) . The Alcindors decided to send their only child to Power Memorial Academy, a small school on Manhattan’s West Side.
At Power, Alcindor came under the control of Coach Jack Donohue, a strict young man who already gained his fame as one of the best coaches in the city. Donohue brought Alcindor along slowly. As a first-year student, the boy was not able to do much but wave his long skinny arms and shoot a basket now and then. But by the second year, when he was 15 years old and nearly 7 feet tall, Alcindor was quick and skillful enough to make the high school All-American team and to lead Power to an undefeated season.
From then on he simply got better. Some rival coaches (对方教练)used to take their teams quickly away from the floor before Power warmed up so that their players would not see him any sooner than they had to. Wearing size 16D shoes and sucking a lollipop (棒棒糖), Alcindor would loosen up by starting his leaping lay-ups (擦板球). Then he would casually shoot the ball with either hand, to the delight of the fans.
When reporters and photographers began to follow Alcindor closely, Donohue protected his boy firmly. He simply ordered Lew to talk to no member of the press, and
this suited Lew fine. He was not comfortable talking to grown-ups, perhaps because he towered over them. Discouraged photographers began following him in secret as though he were an easily-frightened giraffe. Once after ducking into a subway to escape, Alcindor told a friend that it was all becoming like policemen and robbers. “People want you not for yo urself,” Donohue warned him, “but because you’re a basketball player. Don’t forget that.”

A.How Donohue protected Alcindor from the press
B.How Alcindor disliked meeting reporters

作文
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.
More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.
On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.
And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficiency of revision will surely be improved.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua。
