At the age of seven, Winston Churchill was sent to a boarding (寄宿) school named St. George. The school rules were strict. He often got serious punishment. Churchill cried loudly and kicked wildly when he was beaten. At the end of the term, he returned home with a report card and pains all over his body. The report card said that he was ‘naughty” (顽皮的).
At the age of twelve, his father sent him to Harrow Public School, which was famous for training English gentlemen. Because he failed the entrance exam, he was placed in the last group of the class with worst grades. He fell behind the others in study. He gave many people the impression of low energy, strangeness, and lawlessness. Fortunately, he still had a friend, his grandfather. He said, “Le t him go! If boys have the chance to show their talents, they are sure to become better.” Churchill kept the words of his grandfather in mind, and secretly looked for it in his heart.
Many years later, Churchill was already a successful politician and writer. He worked as a reporter, as Secretary of the Navy, and as Prime Minister (首相) of the United Kingdom. Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious (奢侈的) for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. And my father has a bad temper (脾气).
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. But at last I heard my mother say the following words.
“Lily,” she said, “look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable (耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside.”
I listened carefu lly but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk (黄昏), my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed that it was their most harmonious (和谐的) period. The sun gently glistened (闪耀) among the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
The doctor had said my father would recover (恢复) in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Lily, don’t worry about me,” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mum.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
12. Why does Lily sometimes doubt that there is no real love between her parents?
A.Because they are very busy earning money.
B.Because they don’t have enou gh money for love.
C.Because her father is easy to lose his temper to her mother.
D.Because she doesn’t see the thread in the quilt.
13. Which of the following is similar to the underlined phrase “out of the question” in Paragraph 1?
A.Possible. B.Impossible. C.Necessary. D.Unnecessary.
14. What made her father change so greatly?
A.The quilt story from her mother. B.One-month stay in the hospital.
C.The beautiful scenery of the country road. D.The sickness her father suddenly got. 15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.We should understand our parents however old they are.
B.Love is hidden in the life, but it really influences our life.
C.We really need love because it makes our life harmonious.
D.Love is so important to everyone that we must love everyone.

For a long time, a boy wondered why his desk-mate was always the first in the class, but he could only rank (排名) the 21st.
At home, he asked his mom: “Am I more stupid than other kids? How can I always fall behind? I just can’t come up with an answer.” Mom was aware that her son’s self-respect had been hurt by the ranking system, but she didn’t know what to say to help.
She wanted to say that intelligence differs and that yes, her son’s friend really was the smarter boy. But that would so upset her son. Th ank goodness she didn’t say it.
Her son and his friend went on to high school that year, though the boy tried as hard as he could, her son’s friend was still ahead of him. But she took pride in her boy for his hard work, sincerely proud. It was around this time that she decided to take him on a trip to the seaside. On the trip, she at last found an answer for him.
Today her son no longer cares about rankings. He doesn’t have to, for he himself is now the top of the class at the top national university. After university his teachers and classmates fully expect him to have a promising career.
Invited to speak to his old high school, he mentioned a valuable childhood experience. It was about that holiday his mother had prepared for them: “Once, on a trip to the sea, my mother and I were lying on the beach. She pointed to the sea and said to me: Do you see the seabirds fighting for food out there? When a wave comes near, the little birds rise quickly. The awkward seagulls (笨拙的海鸥) are far slower and have to struggle to get away from the wave. But these awkward birds prove to have the biggest, strongest wings, which allow the bird to travel the farthest when the season changes and they leave for foreign shores, leaving the little birds behind. Son, I have a feeling that you are one of those seagulls.”
