21.(6分)The Song Dynasty(960-1279) is often referred to as the Chinese Renaissance(文艺复兴). For about three and a quarter centuries, under its rule, China enjoyed a period of economic growth with great artistic and intellectual achievements.
One of the most important factors in the Song Renaissance was the printing press which made for a rebirth of classical Confucian learning. By the 10th century, printers were producing a large number of copies of the classical Confucian texts. With this increase in the production of books, education spread and became widely available.
Printing also had its greatest influence on the Chinese political system. In the Song Dynasty, govemment examinations became the most important way to political power in China. For almost 1,000 years, China was govemed by men who had done very well in examinations. Thousands of students studied for the exams, and thousands of inexpensive books were required. Without printing, such a system would not have been possible.
The Song period was also the golden age of Chinese painting. Emperor Huizong(1101-1125) was a talented painter who encouraged the arts. A royal painting academy was created and many fine artists were supported. The period is best known for nature subjects and landscape paintings. Guo Xi used perspective in his paintings and The Quict Valley is one of his best-known works. One of the greatest landscape painters of the period was Fan Kuan. His masterpiece, Travelling among Mountains and Gorges, is one of the most famous Chinese paintings. Completed around the year 1000, it was inspired by the power of nature and the relative insignificance of humans.

C.Only members good at painting were supported by the royalty.
D.There was a special exam system to select politicians.
4、From the passage we can know the painter of Travelling among Mountains and Gorges is ___.
A.Guo Xi
B.Emperor Huizong

D.Confucius
22.(8分)No spacecraft will ever land on the sun. the sun is a flaming ball of gas that reaches thousands of degrees Fahrenheit. But next year, a ship from Earth will fly closer to it than any man made craft has flown before. The mission(任务)is a big development for scientists and, maybe, for everyone else.
In September 2018, NASA plans to launch the Parker Solar Probe. After a journey of nearly 90 million miles, it will fly within 3.8 million miles of the sun. within two months of launching, the probe is expected to reach the sun’s
corona(日冕). That’s the sun’s outer atmosphere of gases.
Getting there won’t be easy. Designing a spacecraft tough enough to hold up to the sun’s heat has pro ved difficult. But that hasn’t stopped engineers from trying. Temperatures in the corona can reach millions of degrees. The probe will limit itself to regions where things get no hotter than 2,10oF. That’s still a heavy heat load for a spacecraft. But a
4.5-inch-thick heat shield(罩)will protect the probe’s camera and scientific instruments.
NASA says the data the probe collects could provide knowledge into the physics of stars. Our sun is special to us. But as a star, it’s rather common. So the better we un derstand how it works, the better we understand all stars of its mass and color.
Perhaps the most important is what the probe may show us about solar storms. During solar storms, charged particles stream through the solar system. They can disable communications satellites and shut down powder systems. One study has found that a very intense solar storm could cause up to $2 trillion in damage in the US alone. It could also black out the East Coast for a year.
Understanding solar storms might allow us to predict them and protect ourselves. That could make even a mission with a billion-plus price tag one of NASA’s great bargains.
1、What can we learn about the probe?
A.It’ll fly closer to the sun that the previous ones
B.It’s the first man made instrument to fly to the sun
C.It’ll get to the core of the sun in nearly two months
D.It’ll fly about 3.8 million miles to reach the corona.
2、What is the challenge for the engineers?
A.Directing the probe to collect data
B.Reducing the temperature of the probe
C.Building a shield against the heat
D.Limiting the probe to proper regions
3、What might be the best title?
A.Exploring the stars B.Getting close to the sun
C.Designing a spaceship D.Protecting the earth
4、Where does the value of the mission lie?
A.Monitoring satellites B.Exploring solar energy
C.Developing scientific instruments D.Forecasting solar storms
23.(8分)The world’s first “Sky Pool” has been uncoated-and it’ll give anyone a touch of dizzi-ness, unless he or she is not bothered by heights.
Situate d in the capital’s new riverside district beside Battersea Power Station, the glass pool, hanging 10 storeys, or 110 feet up as a bridge between two apartment buildings, is 25m long, 5m wide and 3m deep with a water depth of 1. 2m. Swimmers will be able to look down 35 metres to the street below as they take a dip, with only 20cm of glass between them and the outside world It’s even got a bar, folding chairs and an orange garden.
The pool will be part of Embassy Gardens at Nine Elms, a huge billion building pro-ject beside the new American Embassy in south-west London. The project is creating thou-sands of apartments, the smallest of which are expected to cost nearly $ 1 million, and the pool will only be open to the apartments’ owners.
Embassy Gardens takes design inspiration from the Meatpacking District of New York with floor to ceiling windows and brick frontages. The designer, Sean Mulryan, desired to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering and do something that had never be en done before. The Sky Pool’s transparent structure is the result of significant advancements in technologies over the last decade.
The experience of the pool will be truly unique and it will feel like floating through the air in central London.
Those people lucky enough to swim there will have a faultless view of the Palace of West-minster and the London Eye. It will be a selling point for developers when the second stage of the development is released to market.
1、Who can swim in the Sky Pool?

24.(8分)Ask any readers who their favorite fictional character in a novel is and you’ll likely get a detailed explanation about the beloved character that they admire. It might even sound like they’re talking about a person they know.
In a study, researchers looked at the brains of a group of people over nine days. Half of the group read the novel Pompeii, and half didn’t. After examining, researchers found the readers’ brains showed heightened connectivity (连通性) in some areas. This is likely because the brain imagines the movement and emotions of the character they read about in the book. Even though the participants were then asked not to read the novel, they kept this heightened connectivity. We call that a “shadow activity”, almost like a muscle memory. So even after you’ve finished a book, your brain keeps those benefits for some time afterwards.
It has been suggested that people who read a lot of fiction become more empathic (移情作用的), because fiction is a simulation (模仿) of social experiences, in which people practice and improve their interpersonal skills. The people who not only read fiction, but felt a high level of “emotional transportation” while reading --- as compared to people who weren’t taken by the story or who read non-fiction---displayed higher levels of empathy when tested. Increase of empathy is important for people because empathy is positively related to creativity, performance at work and cooperative behaviors.
Besides, reading improves “Theory of Mind”. It is “the ability to understand that others have mental states that are different from one’s own.” Of various activities, reading novels has been found to improve this ability, while watching television programs or movies has been found to do just the opposite --- a reduced understanding of others and weaker cognitive (认知的) development overall.
Maybe we should put more of a priority on novel-reading. And many readers believe that reading a novel is far better and more meaningful than watching any movie. As David Kidd of the New School study said, “Fiction is not just a simulator of a social experience; it is a social experience.”
1、What is implied in the Paragraph 2?
A.Reading novels is just a waste of time.
B.Reading novels can help people become happy.
C.Reading novels increases connectivity in our brain.
D.Reading novels helps enhance our memory greatly.
2、What do we know about novel readers from Paragraph 3?
A.They tend to be emotional in social experiences.
B.They understand the emotions of people better.
C.They like to talk about their favorite characters.
D.They are more sensitive to everything.
3、What’s the effect of watching TV or movies?
A.It distinguishes your views from those of others.
B.It contributes to your cognitive development.
C.It reduces your empathy for others a lot.
D.It changes your overall mental states.
4、What does the underlined word “priority” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Preference. B.Authority.
C.Exposure. D.Evaluation.
25.(10分)For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrel on unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast befor e school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to
prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
1、Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict?
A.Both can continue for generations.
B.Both are about where to draw the line.
C.Neither has any clear winner.
D.Neither can be put to an end.
2、What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C.The teens accuse their parents of misleading them.
D.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
3、Parents and teens want to be right because they want to__________.
A.give orders to the other B.know more than the other
C.gain respect from the other D.get the other to behave properly
4、What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts
B.Examples of the parent-teen war
C.Solutions to the parent-teen problems
D.Future of the parent-teen relationship

23、I have just returned from a visit to my landlord, Mr. Heathcliff. I am delighted with the house I am renting from him, which suits me perfectly.
Mr. Heathcliff is my only neighbour, and I think his character is similar to mine. He does not like people either.
When I introduced myself, he said nothing, but frowned, and did not encourage me to enter. After a while, however, he decided to invite me in.
“Joseph!” he called. Joseph was an old servant. He looked crossly up at me as he took my horse. “God help us! A visitor!” he whispered to himself. Perhaps there were no other servants, I thought. And it seemed that Heathcliff hardly ever received guests.
His house is called Wuthering Heights. The name means “a windswept house on a hill”, and it is a very good description. The trees around the house are bent by the north wind, which blows fiercely every day of the year. Fortunately, the house is strongly built, and is not damaged even by the worst winter storms.
Mr. Heathcliff and I entered the huge main room. We sat down by the fire, in silence.
“Joseph!” shouted Mr. Heathcliff. No answer came from the cellar, so he dived down there, leaving me alone with several rather fierce-looking dogs. Suddenly one of them jumped angrily up at me, and in a moment all the others were attacking me.
“Help! Mr. Heathcliff! Help!” I shouted. My landlord was nowhere to be seen, but luckily a woman, who might be the housekeeper, rushed into the room to calm the dogs.
“What is the matter?” Mr. Heathcliff asked me rudely, as he finally entered the room, accompa nied by his
man-servant.
“Your dogs, sir!” I replied. “You shouldn’t leave a stranger with them. They’re dangerous.”
“Come, come, Mr. Lockwood. Have some wine. We don’t often have strangers here. I’m afraid neither I nor my dogs are used to receiving them.” I could not feel offended after this, and accepted the wine. We sat drinking and talking together for a while. I suggested visiting him tomorrow. He did not seem eager to see me again, but I shall go anyway. He seems a fascinating man.
