Beneath the tranquil settings of Yellowstone National Par in the US lies an enormous magma chamber (熔岩腔膛) . When Nasa scientists came to consider the problem, they conceived a plan to drill up to 10m down into the supervolcano, and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day etracting (提取) heat from the volcano. But drilling into a supervolcano does not come without certain riss, namely triggering the eruption you’re intending to prevent. Therefore, the idea is to drill in from the supervolcano from the lower sides, starting outside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Par, and etracting the heat from the underside of the magma chamber. “This way you’re preventing the heat com ing up from below from ever reaching the top of the chamber which is where the real threat arises,” Wilco says.
Such a plan could be potentially applied to every active supervolcano on the planet, and Nasa’s scientists are hoping that their blueprints will encourage more practical scientific discussion and debate for tacling the threat.
“When people first considered the idea of defending the Earth from an asteroid (小行星)impact, they reacted in a similar way to the supervolcano threat,” Wilco says. “People th ought, ‘As puny (微不足道的) as we are, how can humans possibly prevent an asteroid from hitting the Earth.’ Well, it turns out if you engineer something which pushes very slightly for a very long time, you can mae the asteroid miss the Earth. So the problem turns out to be easier than people thin. In both cases it requires the scientific community to invest brain power and you have to start early. But Yellowstone eplodes roughly every 600,000 years, and it is about 600,000 years since it last eploded, which sho uld cause us to sit up and tae notice.”

Not all people in Italy can tolerate football. There are Canadians who won’t love hocey.
A similar situation eists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it’s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there’s the sport that glorifies “the hit”.
By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent and still.
On TV, the game is fractured into a doen perspectives, replays, close ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will thin much about the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won’t do it for you.
Tae, for eample, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base dugout and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, nees fleed. His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The septic(怀疑者)still cannot thin of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws the third baseman goes up on his toes, flees his arms or bring the glove to a point in front of him, taes a step right or left, bacward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to chec his first baseman’s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.”
The septic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocet in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theater, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocing of notes, chores and responses.
28.The passage is mainly concerned with ______________.
A. the attraction of football
B. the attraction of baseball
C. the different tastes of people for sports
D. the different characteristics of sports
29. Those who don’t lie baseball may complain that___________.
A. it is not eciting enough
B. it involves fewer players than football
C. it is only to the taste of the old

B. baseball is more interesting than football
C. baseball may seem boring when watched on TV
D. baseball is less attractive than football
31. We can safely conclude that the author .

However, some hit bac at the accusation, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “ing of Glory” doesn’t intend to be set in any specific historical period.
“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “ing of Glory” player said.
After all, the root cause of the problem is that there is no game rating system in China to protect children who are too young to distinguish virtual world from real history.

书面表达Possible version
Dear Sir/Madam,
I was a passenger on flight L238 from New Yor to Guanghou on July 20 this summer holiday. I’m writing to mae a complaint about the service I received, and as for reasonable compensation.
I enjoyed my stay in New Yor, but the return trip drove me mad. I waited for 7 hours before I finally boarded the flight. What also disappointed me was that your staff were unhelpful, never eplaining to us what caused the delay or informing us of how long I had to wait.
It's a legal requirement for airline operators to provide immediate information of the flight if a long delay happens. I would therefore epect some compensation for your failure to observe this regulation.
I enclose my boarding pass and loo forward to hearing from you shortly.
Yours faithfully
Li Hua。
