It was Christmas time. But the sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy were at home feeling very unhappy because it just didn’t feel like Christmas. There was a war in America and their father was a soldier in the army. Their
mother had given them a dollar each to spend for Christmas. They were dreaming of what they would get for themselves. Jo held out Mother’s shoes over the fire in order to warm them. The shoes were worn out and Jo murmured, “She needs a new pair.” Beth thought that she would get her mother a pair with her dolla r.
Immediately an argument began among them, as to who should buy Mother the shoes. Finally Beth had an idea. She said, “Let’s each get her something for Christmas, and not get anything for ourselves.” Once they had made up their minds they felt much happier.
Christmas morning arrived. They were all hungry and eager to begin eating. But Mother came in and told them about a family that stayed nearby and that had nothing to eat and no warm clothes. Hearing this, the girls went silent for a minute, and then they heroically offered to take them their own breakfast. So they trooped out, bringing goodwill and comfort to a sad, cold and hungry family. It was a very happy breakfast for the sisters, even though they did not get any of it.
In the evening, after they put on a play for their friends, Mother announced that dinner was ready. The sisters were amazed at what was laid out on the table. They stared first in shock and then in delight. Such a wonderful treat was a thing of the past. “Did the fairies bring this?” Amy asked in a hushed voice. Beth clapped and said, “It’s Santa Claus!”

We usually rely on Hollywood heroes to show up on our screens and defeat the bad guys. Yet Wolf Warrior II (2017) has proven that a Chinese moviemaker can entertain audiences just as well.
The man in question is Leng Feng, played by Wu Jing, the writer and director of the film. The fearless Leng used to be a special forces soldier in the People’s Liberation Army. During a military rebellion in an African country, Leng almost single-handedly helped Chinese workers and African locals to escape.
In both acting and technical terms, the film is very similar to a Hollywood movie. It features quality action scenes, including gun fights, car chases, an underwater fight and a tank battle.
“The movie is a first-class production, even by Hollywood standards,” movie critic Zhou Liming told China Daily.
Wolf Warrior II came out on July 27 and took a record-breaking 3.4 billion yuan in its first 13 days. But the fighting scenes alone don’t explain the movie’s success.
“National pride among young people is growing in China,” wrote reporter Huang Zheping on news site Quartz. China’s rising military power and its positive role in the world have brought out a bigger sense of pride among young people in China, he added.
The film’s story isn’t built on nothing. Wolf Warrior II is loosely based on the true events of the 2011 evacuation(撤离)of Chinese people from Libya, when a civil war broke out in the African country.
“When I watched news clips of these events, I felt proud of China,” Wu, 43, told China Daily. He hoped to make something different from other Chinese films, which, he said, usually feature bad acting and pay attention to good looks instead of good stories.
“I wanted to show the kindness, wit, courage and sacrifice of Chinese soldiers,” he said. “As of now, China has few such military movies. We are still exploring them.”
25. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The film is mainly based on true events.
B. The movie’s success depend s only on the fighting scenes.
C. China has quite a few military movies like Wolf Warrior II.
D. Leng Feng is a special forces soldier in the People’s Liberation Army.
26. According to the passage, which is NOT the reason that has led to Wolf Warrior II’s success?
A. It has taken a record-breaking 3.4 billion yuan.
B. It features quality action scenes like those in Hollywood movies.
C. It has aroused national pride among the public, especially young people.
D. It is different from other Chinese films which pay more attention to good looks than good acting and
stories.
27. What does the film Wolf Warrior II feature?
A. It features gun fights and battles.
B. It features quality action scenes.
C. It features good acting and good looks.
D. It features the kindness, wit, courage and sacrifice of people.
C
Smartphone apps certainly make our life easier. And now, it looks like they could even do our homework for us.
Recent years have seen the release of a variety of study aid apps aimed at students, from primary school to high school. Most of these apps allow users to take a photo of their schoolwork and the correct answers will just appear on their smartphone.
Convenient as they are, these apps present problems to both parents and teachers. Wu Xiao, an English teacher, said that over one-third of the students in her class have used study aid apps. “Most of them just copy the answers from the app, while only a few use the app to study,” she told China Youth Daily. She pointed out that many of the students’ translation assignmen ts were exactly the same as the
standard answers. “If students blindly rely on the study aid apps and just copy correct answers, they will become lazy and lose the capability to think independently,” Wu said during a parents’ meeting. Worse still, some students even use the study aid apps as social networks.
“The teenagers are easily distracted (分心)while using these apps and they are not aiding study, but undermining it,” commented China Youth Daily. In fact, the problem doesn’t just apply to students in China. In an article published by Wired in July, it was pointed out that study aid apps are making it easier for US students to cheat on their homework.
However, this isn’t to say that study aid apps should be completely banned ---- they could help students if they’re used properly. “A quick post to Facebook revealed that many of my friends had use d them----especially those studying math,” wrote Pippa, reporter for Wired.
Indeed, “Every coin has two sides. As for study aid apps, we cannot ban students from using them, but they should be used in a proper way,” commented Legal Evening News. “Parents a nd teachers should give necessary guidance to help students take advantage of the study aid apps’ strengths and avoid their weaknesses.”
28. What does the underlined word “undermining” mean?
A. distracting
B. damaging
C. helping
D. banning
29. What is the writer’s attitude toward the study aid apps?
A. supportive
B. objective
C. negative
D. unconcerned
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How do we make use of study aid apps?
B. What effective tool should we turn to in our study?
C. Should we ban students from using study aid apps?
D. What are the advantages and drawbacks of a smart phone?

Mistakes That Truly Confident People Never Make
You can’t create confidence out of thin air. It’s the process of self-improvement that leads to confidence. With that in mind, here are five mistakes that truly confident people never make.
They don’t care what others think. Truly confident people don’t believe blindly the judgment of others. That’s not to say they don’t listen to others’ advice.31 They also give the same freedom to others, avoiding judgment by recognizing that everyone has expertise(专业知识)to bring to the table.
32 Confident people embrace challenges, knowing that although you can’t predict the future, you can be prepared for it. Truly confident people expect failures, but they are always optimistic about the future. No matter how bad things are, they always look for one positive to use as a source of inspiration.
They don’t make others look bad.33 The more you help others, the more successful and confident you will become. Think about the typical workplace. When you make your team members look good, they will trust you as a team member, which finally brings you greater confidence.
They don’t go it alone. Genuinely confident people don’t give in to the belief that success only comes from going it alone. Instead, they are keenly self-aware of their own flaws and specially seek out experts to deal with these known shortcomings. In other words, confident people ask for help. 34 They don’t seek the approval of everyone. Confident people do care about what the closest and most supportive people in their lives have to say. 35 Can you share your dreams and ideas with them without getting shot down? If not, think about working on only the best relationships if you want to be truly confident.
A. They don’t expect certainty.
B. They don’t take things too personally.
C. When you’re always talking, you’re always pushing.
D. This shows their respect for the other person’s wisdom.
E. Think about the people you hang out with on a daily basis.
F. Truly confident people work hard to make others successful.
G. On the contrary, they just seek out reasonable and constructive one.

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
Climate change is a fairly clear and easy term. When a location experiences changes in its climate over a period of time, we can 56 (technical) say that climate change has occurred. More often the phrase “climate change”57 (use) synonymously(同义地) with the 58 (term) “global warming” and “greenhouse effect” to describe the warmer temperatures.
It’s59 (frighten) to think about the results of the climate change. Rapid rainfall can be a factor in rising sea levels and floods, while increased temperatures and winds can cause droughts, both of 60 can wipe out crops, destroy properties and lead to hunger.
With most experts 61 (agree) that climate change and global warming have already begun, there is no better time 62 (take) action to prevent these processes.
To do this, one of the most important steps we can take is to reduce the amounts of man-made gas we send into the atmosphere.
Climate change is 63 unfortunate by-product(副产品)of our modern lives, but 64 is not unavoidable. Becoming aware 65 our own energy use and how we contribute to global warming and the greenhouse effect is our first step towards fighting against climate change.

Molly lived with her father in a small town. Every day, her father went to his office in a hurry, where he would have a busy day. Molly loved her father very much and each time she saw her father tired from one-day-hard work, she always wanted to do everything in her power to make him relaxed. How eager she was to see a happy look on his face. It was the smart girl’s job to hand her father his brown paper lunch bag each morning before he headed off to work.
One morning, in addition to his usual lunch bag, Molly handed him a second paper bag. This one was worn and held together with staples(书钉).
“Why two bags?” her father asked in surprise. “The other is something else,” Molly answered mysteriously. “What’s in it?” “Just some stuff(东西). Take it with you.”
Not enough time to discuss the matter, he put both sacks(袋子)into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed off. At midday he opened Molly’s bag and took out the contents: two hair ribbons(丝带), three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a tiny sea shell, a small doll, and 13 pennies... The busy father smiled, finished eating quickly, and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket, Molly’s stuff included.
That evening, Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper. “Where’s my bag?” “What bag?” “The one I gave you this morning.” “I left it at the office. Why?” “I forgot to put this note in it,” she said. “And, besides, Daddy, the things in the sack are the things I really like—I thought you might like to play with them. You didn’t lose the bag, did you, Daddy?” “Oh, no,” he said, lying. “I just forgot to bring it home. I’ll bring it tomorrow.” While Molly hugged her father’s neck, he unfolded the note that read: “I love you, Daddy.” Molly had given him her treasures—all that a 7 year old held. Love in a paper bag, and he missed it—not only missed it, but had thrown it in the wastebasket.

sunny during the day and cool at night. Temperatures will be in the sixties during the day and in the forties at ni ght. You won’t need a heavy coat, but take a jacket to work.
The weather on Saturday will be nice in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. It’ll probably rain at night. These showers are quite normal during the spring. So you will have clear weather to do some gardening on Saturday morning. Sunday will be cold and windy, and maybe it will snow in the mountains. If you are planning to go there, don’t forget your boots and jackets. And now for the sports, here is Thomas Green.。
