21.(6分)Not all the historians in Canada are historians of Canada. Case in point: Timothy Brook.
Brook was born and schooled in Toronto, and he now teaches in Vancouver. But he’s a historian of China, and his recent book Vermeer’s Hat seems at first to be about Holland in the period of the Dutch masters. When I met Brook recently in Vancouver, he did seem truly a global historian. Vancouver is his home, but Vermeer’s Hat has been
published around the world.
Brook was just in from Oxford, UK, where he taught part of the year, by way of New York, where Vermeer’s Hat had just been given the Lynton History Prize. He was about to go to California, where he was due to lecture. Still, the author and the book---and the hat---say something fresh about Canada and the world.
“I’ve been looking at Vermeer since 1971,” says Brook. Looking at Dutch interior (室内的) scenes from the
mid-1600s, he noticed maps, Chinese porcelains (瓷器), South American silver, Virginia tobacco—all marking the influences of the wide world. In Brook’s telling, Vermeer’s masterworks become doorways to the world, and not least to the largest, richest nation in the world, the China of the late Ming Empire, a field in which Brook happens to be a specialist.
Brook used global history as a way to find common ground with fellow historians. “The sixteenth century is the age of discovery, but the seventeenth century is the age of people starting to move the possibility of a global economy, intercultural relations across the globe,” he said.
It proved not hard for this Canadian historian of the world to find Canada in world history--or the world in Canadian history. In Vermeer’s 1658 painting of a Dut ch soldier in a wonderful hat, the felt (毛毡) for the hat was probably made in Lachine, from French la Chine meaning China. Established in Canada by de Champlain, the town was so named because Champlain, like other explorers the French explorer Samuel was hoping to get through Canada to China.
1、Which was the line of Brook’s recent journey back home.
A.Toronto--Oxford→ Vancouver
B.Oxford→ New York→ Vancouver
C.California→ Toronto→ Vancouver
D.New York→ California→ Vancouver.
2、Which is discussed in Brook’s Vermeer’s Hat?

D.A hat Vermeer wore for years
3、What can we infer about Vermeer?
A.He was a Dutch painter
B.He was a French explorer
C.He was a UK publisher
D.He was a US teacher
4、What can be suitable title for the text?
A.The Influences of masters’ books
B.An age of moving and possibilities
C.The Importance of Cultural Exchange
D.A Canadian Historian Thinking Globally

23.(8分)Susan was born as the ninth child in a Catholic family. She suffered from learning disabilities ever since her birth because of her mother’s poor health.
School was difficult for Susan and she was bullied because of her different behaviors. Her siblings, who were much older, had life experiences that were unknown to their little sister. From the time of her birth, Susan was a screamer. The only really safe place that she would use as a repeat was her bedroom. There she would hang posters of her musical idols on the wall and sing popular music into a hairbrush that she pretended was a microphone.
One by one the siblings moved away from home and then Susan’s father died. This left her alone with an aging mother and a cat. The siblings accused her mother of not expecting more out of Susan. She had seen many professionals and remembered hearing the word “borderline” but didn’t know what it meant. She tried volunteer work. Her best state of mind, however, was found when she was singing and so she would regularly join others in karaoke or pubs where she could show her skills and receive appreciation from the crowd.
When Susan announced at Christmas that she was planning to compete in the Britain’s Got Talent contest, her siblings tried to discourage her. It was a wonder that she was even able to do the audition considering the troubles she faced just physically getting to the right place.
“The Woman I Was Born to Be” is a beautiful story written in the simple but humorous voice of the author, Susan Boyle. She tells her story from birth to the present in an interesting and educational manner. The writing is supplemented by photos from her albums.

24.(8分)Most groups of plants and animals are richer in species and more plentiful near the equator. In the ocean, that holds true for cold-blooded predators(掠食者). But warm-blooded predators are more diverse toward the poles and noticeably missing from several warm hot spots. Why?
John Grady, an ecologist, and his team considered the possibility—warm-blooded animals need a lot to fuel their metabolism(新陈代谢). Perhaps colder waters are just richer in small fish? But they found that at higher, colder places, there isn’t actually much more food around. It’s more that warm-blooded animals are eating a much bigger share of it than their cold-blooded competitors.
The real explanation is simple. An animal’s speed, swiftness, and int elligence depend on its metabolism, which in turn depends on its temperature. Since birds and mammals can keep heating their bodies in icy conditions, they remain fast and attentive. By contrast, the fish they hunt become slower and duller. At some tipping point of temperature, seals, dolphins, and penguins start outswimming their prey(猎物). They become more likely to come upon targets and outpace the cold-blooded predators of their own.
In Grady’s words, “Warm-bodied predators are favoured where preys are s low, stupid and cold.” That’s why sharks and other predatory fish dominate near the equator, but colder waters are the kingdom of whales and seals. By keeping food to themselves in the poles, these creatures can then specialize on specific types of prey, which makes them more likely to split into separate species. The killer whales of the North Pacific, for example, include mammal-eating transients and fish-eating, year-round residents.
But the world is changing. It’s likely that the surface of the oceans w ill warm by 2 to 3℃ within this century. Grady’s team estimates that every time the ocean’s surface warms by 1℃, populations of sea mammals will fall by 12%,
and populations of seals and sea lions will fall by 24%.
But “predictions are hard,” Donna Hauser from the University of Alaska Fairbanks notes. “Polar bears are losers of a warming world, but some populations are still doing well. Some groups of whales have changed the timing of their migrations; others are hunting in deeper, colder waters. These changes might make sea mammals more adaptable to changing climates. Maybe they just need to find the places where fish remain slow, stupid and cold.”
1、Why are there more types of warm-blooded predators near the poles?
A.Because there is more food.
B.Because there are fewer enemies.
C.Because they are faster and wiser.
D.Because they consume less energy.
2、The author mentions the killer whales to show ______.
A.the benefit of biological evolution
B.food preference of different sea mammals
C.the distinction of specific types of predators
D.the advantage of constant body temperature
3、What is Donna Hauser’s attitude towards the future of the sea mammals?
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Neutral. D.Sceptical.
4、Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Are the Poles Heaven for Sea Predators?
B.How Do Sea Mammals Track Their Prey?
C.Why Do the Warm-Blooded Like Food Cold?
D.Is the World Too Hot for the Warm-Blooded?
25.(10分)You can’t walk into the office without Rihanna’s voice singing “work work work work work work” in your head. And that one line from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” still makes you want to scream. These are commonly known as earworm songs—those sticky tunes that continue to play in your head. A recent study finds that more than 90% of adults report hearing earworm songs on a weekly basis.
Fortunately, most people report earworm songs as pleasant. But others find them annoying or even maddening. “Some people are troubled by them to the point that it disturbs life,” says Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, a professor at the University of Arkansas who has studied earworm songs.
Margulis says earworm songs tend to have some predictable characteristics. For one thing, they tend to small parts
of a song—not the whole track. And “the songs you’ve heard recently also have the most possibility to get stuck in your memory,” she says.
But sometimes something strange and unpredictable can also start a track paying in your h ead. “Once I was at the doctor’s office and saw a poster of a man who I thought looked like Gaston—a character from Beauty and the Beast,” Margulis recalls. A couple minutes passed, and she realized she couldn’t get “Be Our Guest”, the song in the movie, o ut of her head, even though she hadn’t thought of the tune in years. In that instance, she was able to identify her earworm’s trigger: the Gaston-looking man in the poster. “But the connections can be really unclear,” she says.
Margulis points out that, in all of human history, recorded music is a very new phenomenon. She says some have inferred that earworm songs are also new—the unintended consequence of being able to hear the same song played everywhere in the same way over and over again. So far, the convincing explanation for why human beings experience earworm songs remains a mystery. But there are some well-established ways to cast off the earworm songs.
“Finding a mentally demanding task and putting your mind on it usually shifts attention away from internal music. People tend to get earworms when performing tasks that don’t require their full attention—stuff like doing the dishes,” Margulis says.
Chewing gum can also help. When a song is stuck in our heads, it’s almost like we’re singing along with it. If you make your mouth do something else—chewing gum, eating a meal or talking with a friend—that can kick out the earworm.
You could also face your enemy. By listening to the full track that includes the passage stuck in your head, you may find “closure” and relief.
1、Which of the following is most likely to be an earworm song?
A.A song made up of simple words.
B.A song heard frequently these days.
C.A song sung by a most famous singer.
D.A song learned during one’s childhood.
2、What does the underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Type. B.Tune.
C.Cause. D.Characteristic.
3、We can infer that earworm songs may ________.
A.result from modern technology B.be experienced over meals
C.help regain lost memories D.hurt one’s hearing
4、What is mainly talked about in the last three paragraphs?
A.Why we hear earworm songs. B.Where to find earworm songs.
C.When we hear earworm songs. D.How to get over earworm songs.
