AMy First Marathon(马拉松)A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead。

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P。

E class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball。

I didn’t do either well. He later told me that I was “not athletic ”。

The idea that I was “ not athletic" stuck with me for years。

When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic。

It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before the marathon,I dreamt that I couldn’t even find t he finish line。

甘肃省镇原县二中高中英语阅读理解练习题(有答案)

甘肃省镇原县二中高中英语阅读理解练习题(有答案)

一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Since we've headed into the snowy part of the year, it seems like a good time to solve a language puzzle that Eskimos have a huge number of words for snow. The idea was popularized by the now well-known expert Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s. His number was approximately five Eskimo words for snow, but somehow the story was so wide spread and romantic that it got out of control and grew bigger and bigger. There are two problems with the concept of Eskimos having tons of words for snow.First, Eskimos speak at least two different languages—Inuit and Yupik. Just as we have talked about how English and many other languages developed from a common language called Proto-Indo-European, Inuit and Yupik come from a different common language called Eskimo-Aleut. So saying Eskimos have 100 words for snow is like saying Europeans have 100 words for kings or queens. It might be telling you something broad about culture, but it isn't really telling you much about language. The second problem is "What is a word?” The Inuit and Yupik languages make words in different ways from how we make words in English. For example, the West Greenlandic word 'siku,' (sea ice), is used as the root for 'sikursuit (pack ice), 'Sikuliaq (new ice), and 'sikurluk (melting ice). But it's not that West Greenlandic has so many more words for describing snow than English, it's just that West Greenlandic expresses ideas by combining meaningful units of language together into one word while English uses more phrases and compounds. We express all the same ideas; we just do it a little differently because of the way our language is built. So you're probably still wondering, "If it's not 50 or 100 or 400 words, how many is it?" Well, Woodbury lists 15 that are present in a Yupik dictionary published in 1984, but he says that depending on how you look at it this is not an exact number. It could be 12; it could be 24. But it's certainly not 100.Sometimes, the "hundred words for snow" puzzle is used to argue that because Eskimos have so many words for snow, they think about snow in ways that we can't even begin to imagine—that your language decides or limits your thoughts. Languages are just different. They don't decide what we are able to think about or are not able to think about. I can think about snow floating on water even if we don't have a word for that in English. So when you're out skiing or snowboarding or just shoveling your driveway this winter, don't believe the people who try to tell you that Eskimos have 100 words for snow.(1)Why are Eskimos thought to have so many words for snow?A. Because snow is everywhere where Eskimos live.B. Because the story about it got enriched and believed.C. Because snow is of great importance to Eskimos.D. Because Eskimos have great affection for snow.(2)How does the writer explain the first problem?A. By presenting figures.B. By making comparisons.C. By quoting sayings.D. By adopting idioms.(3)The example of the west Greenlandic word 'siku' shows that .A. the making of words varies from language to languageB. the Inuit and Yupik languages have more words for snowC. the richness of words and phrases leads to different ideasD. more phrases about snow are found in the English language(4)What conclusion can we safely draw from the last two paragraphs?A. Eskimos better understand snow than other people.B. Languages deeply influence people's ability to think.C. There is no point counting Eskimo's expressions for snow.D. What comes into our mind is limited by our language.【答案】(1)B(2)B(3)A(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了爱斯基摩人描述雪的词语虽然多但并非传言中的100多个。

As adults, it is still important for us to have friends.True friends are people who like us though we made mistakes and who listen to us and tell us the truth. Friends support our decisions and tell us when we’re foolish. They laugh with us and share our sadness. They are our partners and share interests with us. They stimulate us when we are feeling down. They are people we aren’t afrai d of telling our secret wishes to or what is really on our minds.Friends are our supporters. When you can depend on friends, you feel safe and warm. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now! With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world. It is also perfectly natural in this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens. This period is part of the life cycle. He was a seller of second-hand shoes. He seemed so tired and nobody was buying his shoes.I wanted to give him something but I had not brought anything with me. Then, a little girl came toward him. I heard the child say, "Grandfather, may I polish your shoes?" That old man took pity on her, smiled and he gave her a shoe to polish. The girl said, "I polish the shoe because I need money to buy my brother a new school uniform." The old man answered, "Oh, little girl. Just stop doing this. Come with me and I will buy you a uniform."Then they walked to a market (I followed behind) and he bought her a uniform. The girl was so happy. She said, "Thank you so much for doing this." Then she left, leaving the old man smiling. He walked away from the market, but I stopped him.I whispered in his ear, "You are a hero! Thank you for your kindness!" As I walked away, I glanced back and I could see him still smiling. I was blown away by the kindness I had just seen. Someone who had so little himself was able to show such incredible generosity! But scientists did not know whether teens did too. To find out, Insel asked 88 people between the ages of 13 and 20. She had them try a game. The participants looked at pictures of planets on a computer screen. They had to click as fast as they could when they saw a planet with designs. They were not supposed to click if a planet had no designs. The participants could earn 20 cents for right answers but lose 10 cents for wrong ones. In other sessions, they’d get a dollar for right answers, and lose a half dollar for wrong ones. Players of all ages wanted to win the money, and cared more about bigger rewards than smaller ones.As Insel expected, adults performed better when the stakes were high. But teens 13 to 18 played just as well whether they stood to win 20 cents or a dollar. Only 19- or 20-year olds stepped up their game for the higher stakes.Insel’s team published this work November 28, 2017, in Nature Communications.Brains change and mature during adolescence. And not all parts grow at the same rate. Insel was interested in two areas in particular. One is deep inside the brain and just above the ears. Called the ventral striatum (腹侧纹状体), it helps the brain calculate rewards. The ventral striatum becomes mature during the teen years. The brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额叶) takes longer to mature. This area is important for planning and setting goals. It may not mature until early adulthood.Nerve pathways —think of them as the brain’s “wiring” —connect the ventral striatum and prefrontal cortex. This lets the two regions communicate to make decisions. But because the prefrontal cortex matures later, the wiring between the two may not be complete until adulthood.8. Which of the following can explain Insel’s research?A. Teens ignore key points in many aspects.B. Adults behave better with higher rewards.C. Teens give more attention to exams than usual work.D. Adults behave more maturely than children in every way.9. What does the underlined word “stakes” refer to?A. The final results of games or experiments.B. The things that can be gained or lost in races.C. The ambitions or energies that one experiences in games.D. The powers that make one feel less pressure or pain.10. From the passage, we can know ___________.A. the experiment aims to find out adults’ behaviour facing high stakesB. teens have better performances in the first roundsC. adults care less about the experiment at firstD. adults and teens show differently with high stakes11. Which is the best title of the passage?A. Unlike adults, teens don’t perform better with high stakesB. Who perform better, adults or children?C. Stakes are the key points in promoting one’s passionD. Whether low stakes or high stakes, one behaves similarlyDWe went out to dinner tonight to celebrate my daughter's beautiful concert. We don't do this often because of our tight budget.I noticed a very tired mom in some kind of uniform come in with her three children, maybe about age 4 or 5. She looked like she had just finished work. She sat with them quietly taking care of all their needs. Then I noticed, as soon as their finally food arrived, she took a bite of her food and then one of the kids had to go to the bathroom. They all left the table and she ushered them — so lovingly — especially after what may have been a long day at work.I excused myself from the table and went quietly to hostess stand. I handed the hostess $15 and said, “Can you put this anonymously to that mom of 3’s bill? I am hoping it covered at least the children’s meals.” The hostess had such a lovely smile and enthusiasm for being in on this intention. I didn't stand around long as I didn’t want anyone — even my own family — to know what was going on. I wanted it to be completely anonymous. For the rest of my meal I did all I could not to put any more attention directly on the table, as I didn't want her to suspect me in the act.I thought about not sharing this story, but I feel like we are stealth, fierce — each others candle holders and lighters-- in our commitments to kindness, so it feels like I should share with you. Thanks for reading and thanks for all you do to inspire my heart to expand in greater kindness and commitment to more and more random acts of kindness. It feels so wonderful to live in this type of world, one of abundance and kindness, instead of lack and self-service.12. What touched the author according to the passage?A. The warm atmosphere of dining out.B. A mother with tight budget treating her children.C. The deep love between the working mother and children.D. The exhausted mother looking after children with so much care.13. What did the hostess think of the author’s behavior?A. Funny.B. Appreciated.C. Puzzled.D. Suspected.14. What’s the purpose of sharing the story?A. To call on people to offer help to others.B. To share the happiness of giving.C. To build a beautiful and nice world.D. To collect money for the mom in the story.15. Which is the best title of the passage?A. A meaningful dinnerB. A caring motherC. A warm kindnessD. TeachersB. ParentsC. StudentsD. TouristsCSixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here’s what happened.I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other ca r’s back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, who almost caused a big accident, started yelling bad words at us.My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.And I mean he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost r uined your car and sent us to the hospital!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck.”Many people are like garbage (rubbish) trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it.And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.You’ll be happy with what you did.I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me?And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets? It was that dayI said, “I’m not going to do anymore.”Successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you?If you let more garbage trucks pass you by, you’ll be happier.Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, Love the people who treat you right.Forget about the ones who do n’t.8.What happened one day when the author was taking a taxi?A.The taxi almost hit another car.B.The taxi driver was injured.C.The author scolded the driver of the other car.D.The author learned a lesson from the driver of the garbage truck.9.How did the taxi driver respond to the behavior of the driver of the black car?A.He yelled back at the driver.B.He sent the driver to the hospital.C.He was friendly towards the driver.D.He dumped some garbage in front of his car.10.What does the taxi driver think of people according to Paragraph 3?A.Many people like to drive garbage trucks.B.Many people dump garbage wherever they like.C.Many people are warm-hearted to make others happy.D.Many people tend to be very much depressed.11.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A.The author used to have a lot of garbage trucks.B.The author used to complain a lot.C.The author used to have a lot of money.D.The author used to be a good manager.12.According to the passage, what should you do if people “dump garbage” on you?A.Ignore them and go on with our own work.B.Try our best to persuade them not to do that again.C.Tell them to dump the garbage in the right place.D.Take over their work and carry the garbage to somewhere else.DUsing tablet computers like Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Note just before bed can lead to a poor night’s sleep, according to research.More and more people are taking their tablets to bed with them to surf the web, check Facebook or email before switching off the light. But researchers are warning that the blueish light their screens emit can stop users getting a good night’s sleep. That is because this type of light mimics daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light suppresses production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which helps us fall sleep. This is because our brains have evolved to be wakeful during daylight hours. By contrast, light which is more orange or red in tone does not reduce melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a cue that the day is ending.Neurologists (神经病学家) have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can disrupt sleep. Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre, at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, are warning that looking at tablet displays for more than two hours “leads to a suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices emit optical radiation (光辐射) at short wavelengths” - in other words, they emit bluer light. They say: “Although turning off devices at night is the ultimate solution, it is recommended that if these devices are used at night displays are dimmed as much as possible and that the time spent on them before bed should be limited.”They drew their conclusions after measuring melatonin levels in 13 volunteers, after they had spent time viewing iPads at full brightness at a distance of 10 inches, for two hours. Melatonin levels were significantly lower after they had done this, than they were after the volunteers had viewed their iPads for the same time, but while wearing orange glass goggles, which cut out the blue light. They wrote in the journal Applied Ergonomics that tablet makers could “tune the spectral power distribution of self-luminous devices (自发光设备的频谱功率分布)” so that they disrupted the sleep patterns of users less.It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be jeopardized (危害) by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that persistent disruption to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity, and even breast cancer. However, these studies tend to be comparisons of those with chronic (慢性的) sleep disruption, such as long term shift workers, with those who have normal sleep patterns.13. Based on their findings, researchers have made the following suggestions except that ________.A. Devices like iPads should be turned off at night.B. Tablet makers should make improvements in devices.C. Users should view iPads at full brightness instead of wearing orange glass goggles.D. The time spent on screen before bed should be controlled.14. We can infer from the passage that _________.A. Orange and red light does no good to a good night’s sleep.B. Our brains recognize orange or red light in tone as a cue that the day is ending.C. The less melatonin our body produces, the easier we fall asleep.D. Too much late night screen time leads to more than sleep problem.15. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ________.A. inform readers of a recent research.B. complain about problems caused by using iPads before bed.C. offer some suggestions on late night screen viewing.D. advocate late night screen viewing.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)七选五:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
