In Florida, one McDonald's customer started a pay-it-forward chain that inspired other 249 customers to be generous and do the same.
ABC News reports the spirit of giving is in the air as 250 drive-thru (免下车服务)customers at a local McDonald's paid for the meals of the people next to them. Lakeland customer Torie Keene was paying for her food on Wednesday morning when she decided to pay for the meal of the car next to her.
Keene then purposely told McDonald's cashier Marisabel Figueroa to greet the other customer "Merry Christmas" and not "Happy Holidays." The next customer was moved
when Figueroa said her food was already paid by the previous car. That's when she
thought that she would love to do the same and the domino effect followed.
Figueroa, who worked from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, said that the chain reaction
almost lasted for her entire shift. "I just kept giving everyone the same message,
and they were all so stunned and so happy," she continued. "One lady even paid for
the meals of the next three cars behind her."
While people were amazed by how generous they could get, Figueroa said she had
"never experienced something like that before" in her 12 years of working for
McDonald's. "I feel very blessed to have been a part of all that," the cashier said.
Keene contacted Figueroa on Facebook when the pay-it-forward chain came out in
the local news. She revealed that she was the "mystery customer" that started the
long chain of kindness.
Keene added that she was surprised by the number of people who continued her good
deed when she was "only trying to brighten someone's day."

For thousands of years, people thought of glass as something beautiful to look
at. Only recently have they come to think of it as something to look through. Stores
display their goods in large glass windows. Glass bottles and jars that hold food
and drink allow us to see the contents. Glass is used to make eyeglasses, microscopes, telescopes, and many other extremely useful and necessary objects.
Until the Second World War, most of the glass used for optical(光学的) instruments
was imported from Europe. However, during the war Americans could not get European
glass, and they were forced to make their own. Therefore, new kinds of glasses were developed that had been previously unknown. These new effects were achieved by mixing other chemical elements with the sand. Some of these new glasses are very strong and can resist many kinds of shocks. Legend has it that a very hard glass was invented by a Roman who showed his discovery to the Emperor. When the Emperor saw the glass he feared that it would become more valuable than gold and silver, making his treasure worthless. Therefore, he had the glassmaker killed, and the secret was not discovered again for hundreds of years.
In the present century, safety glass was invented for use in modern cars and planes. Safety glass is made by placing a layer of plastic between two layers of plate glass. When the outside layer of glass is broken, the pieces do not scatter(散开) and injure people. Some glass of the type is strong enough to resist bullets(子弹).
Although nowadays plastics have replaced glass under conditions where glass might be easily broken, there are new uses being developed, for the greatest advantage of glass is that its component(组成的) parts are inexpensive and can be found all over the world.
29. As time goes by, what do people think of glass?
A. It is seen as more than decoration.
B. It is used to make things look pleasant.
C. It is regarded as transparent(透明的).
D. It is widely used to replace steel in making containers.
30. Why did Americans make their own glass during the Second World War?
A. The glass made in Europe was out of date.
B. The war blocked the way of glass import.
C. They refused to use the European glass.
D. They were able to make a new kind of glass.
31. Why are new uses of glass being developed?
A. Because glass is not as safe as plastics.
B. Because glass is cheap and easily obtainable.
C. Because glass is not as strong and durable as plastics.
D. Because glass is more and more widely used.

March 21 has been declared World Sleep Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the value of sleep. Many sleep experts hope it will be a wake-up call.
According to a 2013 poll (民意调查)by the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 4 in 5 Americans don’t get as much sleep as they should during the workweek. On average, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, although some can manage with less and some won’t do well without more. But the survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of Americans actually get a full eight hours of sleep, and another 21% get less than six.
To many of us, the thought of spending more time sleeping is, well, a big yawn. On the other hand, the thought of being smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful has a certain appeal. And those are just a few of the advantages that can be ours if we consistently get enough sleep, researchers say. Also on the plus side: We’re likely to have better skin, better memories, better thinking, and, oh, yes, longer lives.
“When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it influences your performance the next day,” says Dr. Alon Avidan, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center.
A study published last year found the same to be true even of children. When kids aged 8 to 12 slept for just one hour less for four nights, they didn’t function as well during the day.
But sleeping has an image problem. “We see napping or sleeping as lazy,” says Jennifer Vriend, a clinical psychologist in Ottawa, Canada, and the leading author of the study with children. “We put so much emphasis on diet, nutrition and exercise. Sleep is in the back seat.” In fact, she adds, no matter how much we work ou t, no matter how well we eat, we can’t be in top physical shape unless we also get plenty of sleep.
32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. To wake up the sleepers.
B. To serve as a morning call.
C. To draw peopl e’s attention.
D. To declare the special day.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Being healthier is one of the advantages for us.
B. Enough sleep is the guarantee of the appealing things.
C. Sleeping has nothing to do with one’s exp ectations.
D. Spending more time on sleeping is a waste of time.
34. What is implied from Jennifer Vriend said in the last paragraph?
A. Sleeping is only part of our life.
B. Sleeping is an image problem.
C. Lazy people tend to sleep long.
D. People care little about sleeping.
35. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To talk about people’s sleeping problems.
B. To provide an investigation result of sleeping.
C. To arouse the awareness of enough sleeping.
D. To stress the function of sleeping at night.

W:Around the world, the weather has been getting warmer and warmer.Global warming’s having many effects on the world. One of these effects is a higher sea level. Many big cities are close to the sea.If the sea level gets too high, water will flood these cities and people will need to move.Another effect will be much more rain in some places and less in others. This could cause many floods in some areas because of the extra rain. However, this warm weather is making some areas much drier. With less water, these people find it more difficult to grow food. They also have less water to drink and clean with. And these water problems are only going to get worse as the temperature keeps going up.Global warming is also changing Antarctica.Warmer temperatures may be killing animal and birds that live in Antarctica.Animal and birds have been used to the cold and icy temperatures of Antarctica. However,as the temperature around Antarctica gets warmer, they are having trouble surviving. For example, penguins may be slowly dying off because some tiny sea animals which they eat are being killed by the warmer temperatures。
