阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A
We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. My teenage daughter Holly wanted to practice her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said: "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last."
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: "Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck." My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved?
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van . In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was unhurt physically, but when I reached her, she was crying a nd saying: "Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck." I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes became wet and she said: "That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me." Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of that night.
I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly thinks back on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of property.
I repaired the van,but the dent(凹痕) in my truck is still there today. Every day it reminds me of what really matters in my life.

We live in a judgment world where people are quick to point out the faults and imperfections of others yet seem unaware of their own. Some misguided souls believe they have a civil duty to help you to be a better person by telling you what a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve.
So what is the solution to criticism ? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, STOP. Make a conscious decision that rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes, you’ll offer helpful suggestions from the get-go . If I’m painting our living room and making a mess in do ing so , I would like my husband to say to me , “This is a tough job. Can I offer a suggestion that might make it easier for you ? ” rather than having him point out what a sloppy painter I am and tell me how I should be doing it .
If you are on the receiv ing end of criticism, the “OK ” response is a perfect solution. What someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue, a natural response is to defend and attack. However , this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK ”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it .
It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. There is much that one can learn from a negative review . You can ask yourself : Did I make a mistake ? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand ? If so , how can I improve ? As for chronic (习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundaries with them . Remove yourself from their presence when
necessary .
In any event, one can learn to be “OK ” with criticism and not allow it to nega tively impact their life or relationship with the other party . Examine it for any potential truths , and then let it go and just be “OK ”.
25.What does the underlined word “sloppy” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Lazy
B. Careless
C. Creative
D. Energetic
26.What does the author want to show by using the example of painting ?
A. Nobody is perfect.
B. The value of suggestions.
C. The art of criticizing.
D. Her husband cared about her.
27. What is the best way to respond when you are criticized by a person?
A. Just say “OK ”.
B. Defend yourself.
C. Ignore the comment.
D. Engage in a debate about it .
28.You are told to ask yourself some questions in Paragraph 4 so as to _________,
A. l earn from others’ mistakes
B. take criticism objectively
C. better present negative reviews
D. have more confidence in yourself
C
Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.
Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as £172,000 a year.
The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.
By analyzing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week, 40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7 am and finished at around 11 pm.
To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £48,98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jobs”, with psychologist a close second.
It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional demand the hardest thing about motherhood. Over a third of mums felt they needed more
training and around half said they missed going out with friends.
The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother’s Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing(投人) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.
29. What can we conclude from the study?
舒中高一统考英语第5页 (共10页)

30. The biggest challenge for most mothers is from_____________.
A. emotional demand
B. low pay for work
C. heavy workload
D. lack of training
31. What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A. Mother s’ importance shows in family all year long.
B. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.
C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.
D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.

Gorillas are on the edge of extinction. They’re calling on YOU to donate your phone today!
You can now help save gorillas in Africa simply by donating your mobile phone! Coltan is a metallic ore (金属矿石) that is mined both in and out of Africa and can be found within many electronic devices such as mobile phones. The mining of coltan within the Congo River Basin is contributing to forest loss there, and is speeding up the loss of mountain gorillas at a shockingly fast rate. While efforts are being made to deal with this issue, the mining of coltan within gorilla habitat continues. It is very difficult to know which phones contain coltan mined from Africa; however, every phone can help save gorillas when donated to They’re Calling on You.
By donating your phone through the They’re Calling on You mobile phone recycling program you are: ●Preventing your phone from going to the landfill.
●Helping Melbourne Zoo raise money to support the Jane Goodall Institutes monkey conservation work in Africa through the sale of refurbished (翻新) phones.
●Lessening the demand for coltan mining.
To support the They’re Calling on You mobi le phones recycling program you can:
1. Visit Melbourne Zoo to collect a postage paid recycling bag, and post your mobile phone to the Aussie Recycling Program. Your phone will be resold to poor community groups.
2. Register your support simply by emailing the registration form to zvfoundation@.au or fax it to (03)9285-9377.
Schools can get involved too! Please contact Kate McCabe at Melbourne Zoo by email or phones (03)9285-9471. Discuss adding this program to your course while inspiring students to take action for wildlife.
For further information please contact: Rachel Lowry
Ph: (03) 9285-9377
Fax: (03) 9285-9340
Next time your mobile phone rings, let that be a reminder that “they’re calling on you”!
32. Why do you save gorillas by donating your mobile phone?
A. Gorillas won’t be troubled by the ringing of cellphones.
B. Africans will protect gorillas easily by using phones.
C. Africans won’t kill gorillas to exchange for phones.
D. Gorillas’ habitat won’t be destroyed due to less coltan mining.

Giant Panda Is No Longer Endangered
A leading international group has taken the giant panda off its endangered list thanks to decades of conservation efforts, but China’s government is unwilling to accept the change, saying it did not view the sta tus of the country’s beloved symbol as any less serious.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said in a report that the panda is now classified as a “vulnerable” instead of “endangered” species, reflecting its growing numbers in the wild in southern China. __36__ That is the result of work by Chinese agencies to carry out
hunting bans and expand forest reserves.
In a statement, China’s State Forestry Administration said that it doubted the classification change because pandas’ natural habitats have been mainly separated by human causes. The animals live in small, isolated groups of as few as 10 pandas that struggle to reproduce and face
