Module 6 War and Peace
On June 6,1944, allied (联盟的) troops from different countries invaded Normandy, France to Nazi Germany in World War Ⅱ. This is considered one of the most important events in the world. Here are some facts about DDay that you should know, the first day of the invasion of Normandy during World War Ⅱ.
The invasion of northwest Europe was called Operation Overlord. The landing operations were called Operation Neptune and the actual day of the landings was referred to as DDay. In prepara tion for the invasion, the actual day of the landings was not known in advance because it depended on the weather conditions. In fact, DDay was originally scheduled for June 5 at that time, but the weather conditions were unsuitable for a landing. Thus the operation was pushed back to June 6,1944.
Over 150,000 soldiers were involved. They mainly came from the United States, the UK, France, Norway and Canada. The landing operation had two parts. First, more than 20,000 soldiers would be parachuted (伞降) into Normandy, and then would land from ships. About 5,000 ships and more than 10,000 planes were used.
Surprise was key to the success of the attack. The weather helped hide the invasion, as did missions called Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to make the Germans believe that the landing was going to take place at different beaches.
Operation Neptune began on June 6, 1944 (DDay) and ended on June 30, 1944. It was a success. There were five key beaches along the Normandy's coastline. The troops gave these beaches names: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The forces took control of the five key beaches, allowing major invasion force to be landed. Paris was freed from Nazi control on August 25,1944. The fighting on Omaha beach was the fiercest and many troops lost their lives as they tried to occupy the beaches.

Two people, father and son, who had lived in total isolation (隔绝) from society for 40 years in a remote jungle in central Vietnam have been brought back to normal life. To survive, they ate fruits, corn and only had cloths made of tree barks. They even built a tree house.
They are Ho Van Thanh, 86, and his son, Ho Van Lang, 45, who were found by some local people while they were travelling in a deep forest.
Being very surprised by abnormal appearances, gestures and manners of the “jungle men”, these people reported their finding to the local government, who set up a team to look for them, and after five hours of search in the forest, caught the father and son staying in a small hut built on some branches of a large tree.
Due to being isolated from social contact for a long time, both the father and the son could only speak a little of the language of the local place.
After carrying out an investigation (调查) into the men's identity, they found that Thanh once lived a normal life with his family at a local village 40 years ago. But one day at that time, a bombing happened in the village, killing Thanh's mother and three of his four children on the spot. It is suspected that due to the shock, Thanh took his remaining son, 2 years old at the time, and ran away into this jungle. He and the son, now Ho Van Lang, had since lived their lonely life, without contact with anyone. Their daily foods were fruits and manioc they found in the forest. Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be humans is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you
do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical thinking (批判性思维). When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes. Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.
The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen — beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers and the faulty reasoning.
Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.
Activities of the mind and higherorder reasoning(推理) are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world: fast foods, instant coffee, and selfdeveloping film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence (智力), you may learn something_new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffmann, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffmann was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffmann at ease by saying, “Please go slowly. I don't understand things quickly.”
________.
A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fast
B.we might be influenced by other people's ideas
C.it will be easy for us to do something wrong
D.we might be fooled by other people's ideas
解析:选B 细节理解题。

故选B。
10.If you are a critical thinker, you will ________.
A.think deeply about different ideas
B.trust the reports in the newspapers
C.take one view against another view
D.criticize other people for their mistakes
解析:选A 细节理解题。
根据第三段中的“If you find pleasure in deep thinking ...
a critical thinker.”可知,批判性思考者会更深刻地思考不同的想法。
故选A。
11.In the last paragraph, the underlined part “something new” suggests that ________.
A.the smarter you are, the faster you do things
B.the faster you do things, the smarter you become
C.speed can improve intelligence
D.intelligence is not decided by speed
解析:选D 推理判断题。
根据最后一段中的“If you are among the people ... from a story about Albert Einstein.”和“Please go slowly. I don't understand things quickly.”可知,“something new”指的是“智力不是由速度决定的”。
故选D。
12.What will be the best title for the passage?
A.Thinking and Critical Thinking
B.Understanding Critical Thinking
C.Thinking Is Natural
D.Thinking Fast Means Intelligence
解析:选 B 标题归纳题。
根据全篇文章尤其是第一段中的“Thinking about thinking is the key ... take control of your thinking processes.”可知,这篇文章是对批判性思维的理解。
故选B项为文章最佳标题。
