Dear Mr. George,
I ’m writing to ask for your help. Our school will hold an English Poetry Reading Contest next weekend. I am eager to have a try. It is required that the theme should be about nature. Each contestant is given up to five minutes to read the poem. So would you please be so kind to give me some recommendations on which poem to choose? Besides, what I need are the skills of recitation, including pronunciation and intonation, which will perfect my performance.
I ’d appreciate it if you could give me some guidance. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours, Li Hua

When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I ’d had lunch. I told her I hadn ’t had lunch because I ’d been waiting here for help for nearly three hours. The girl said they didn ’t have lunch either. She suggested to her parents that we have lunch together. Their truck happened to have some food and some things for the picnic. So we ate together in a vacant lot by the side of the road. During that time, I told about what had happened to me and how I felt. They shared interesting stories about their lives in Mexico and on fruit farms. After lunch, the girl ’s mother put a paper bag of fruit in my jeep. I showed my gratitude again and we said goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. There are some delicate fruits in the
paper bag. I was surprised to find the money I had quietly left them. At the same time, there was a note written by a girl, which read “We are very happy to be able to help you. We have encountered many difficulties and been disappointed. But we met a lot of helpful people, which made us feel very warm. To help others with one ’s own ability is also a kind of lifting a finger. The beauty of life comes from these lifting a finger. I hope you have a good life and a happy mood.” This made me very moved, and I would try my best to help more people in the future to make our world more beautiful and warmer. Version 2:
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I ’d had lunch. I shook my head and said no, wondering why she asked such a question----was she going to treat me to lunch or something else? “Wait a minute,” said the girl, and then she went back to the truck. After a few minutes she came back with a paper bag. “Here are some Mexican snacks and you can have some when you are hungry,”the girl smiled. I was so surprised and touched that words almost failed me. I just said a “WOW!”instead of a “Thank you!”when I took the bag.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. When I saw what was in the bag, I was overcome with a mixture of respect and gratefulness. In addition to the snacks, there was the $20 bill. What a kind and respectable family! They are a perfect example of what kindness really means. And I ’m sure I will pay it forward.(145 words) Version 3:
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I ’d had lunch. Of course not,for I had been trapped there for quite a few hours. She then had a word with her parents and went back to their truck. A few minutes later she came back with a paper bag. “That ’s Mommy ’s hand-made taco,”explained the girl. “It ’s so yummy that you must love it.”I was starving to death after all that exhausting work so I took the Mexico-originated food, grateful and deeply moved. Then we waved goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. Inside the bag was a chicken taco. The next few minutes saw my wolfing down the delicious food.Tears welled up as I was chewing. It was awesome to know that while many people tend to ignore those in need, there are some kind-hearted ones who go out of their way to lend a hand. The good deed the foreign family did will never escape me. I am going to pass it down to create a much friendlier world.(163 words) Version 4:
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I ’d had lunch. Thinking the trouble I had brought to this family, I hesitated. “Please come and have lunch with us.We won ’t let a friend leave without enjoying some Mexican food.”the girl smiled at me. I was invited to their truck. The mother brought out the lunch which was delicious, so was their laughter and passion towards life,When we finished lunch, the girl handed me a paper bag, telling me inside was some fruit for me to eat when I was on my way.Again, I thanked them for their generosity and kindness.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. To my surprise, a note was right into my eyes.Under the note was a $20 bill, the exact one I gave to the mother.I took up the note, which read “We feel happy when we see the smile on your face!”Deeply touched by these words, I looked at the direction they left. What a wonderful family,They helped me not for the money, but for the happiness they brought to those who were in need of help.I started my car and hit the road, with a smile on my face, a smile the family brought to me.。
