1、 A letter written by Charles Darwin in 1875 has been returned to the S mithsonian Institution Archives(档案馆) by the FBI after being stolen twic e。

"We realized in the mid-1970s that it was missing, " says Effie, hea d of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. "It was noted as missing and li kely taken by an intern (实习生), from what the FBI is telling us. Word go
t out that it was missing when someone asked to see the letter for resea rch purposes. "and the intern put the letter back. “The intern likely too k the letter again once nobody was watching it.”
Decades passed. Finally, the FBI received a tip that the stolen docu ment was located very close to Washington, D. C. Their art crime team r ecovered the letter but were unable to press charges because the time o f limitations had ended. The FBI worked closely with the archives to dete rmine that the letter was both authentic and definitely Smithsonian’s pr operty.
The letter was written by Darwin to thank an American geologist, D r. Ferdinand Hayden or sending him copies of his research into the geol ogy of the region that would become Yellowstone National Park.
The letter is in fairly good condition, in spite of being out of the car e of trained museum staff for so long. "It was luckily in good shape, "say s. "and we just have to do some minor things in order to be able to unf old it. It has some glue on it that has colored it slightly, but nothing tha t will prevent us from using it. After it is repaired, we will take digital ph otos of it and that will be available online. One of our goals is to get ite ms of high research value or interest to the public online.
It would now be difficult for an intern, visitor or a thief to steal a do cument like this. ""Archiving practices have changed greatly since the 19 70s, "says, "and we keep our high value documents in a safe that i don'

2、 You probably know about the Titanic, but it was actually just one of t hree state-of-the-art(最先进的)ocean ships back in the day. The Olympi c class ships were built by the Wolff ship makers in Northern Ireland fo r the White Star Line company. The Olympic class included the Olympi c, the Britannic and the Titanic. What you may not know is that the Titan ic wasn’t even the flagship of this class .All in all, the Olympic class ship s were marvels of sea engineering, but they seemed cursed to suffer dis astrous fates.
The Olympic launched first in 1910. followed by the Titanic in 191
1. and lastly the Britannic in 1914. The ships had nine decks, and Whit
e Star Line decided to focus on making them the most luxurious ships o n the water.
Stretching 269. 13 meters, the Olympic class ships were wonders o f naval technology, and everyone thought that they would continue to b e so for quite some time. However, all suffered terrible accidents on th e open seas. The Olympic got wrecked before the Titanic did, but it wa s the only one to survive and maintain a successful career of 24 years. T
he Titanic was the first to sink after famously hitting a huge iceberg in 1 912. Following this disaster. (he Britannic hit a naval mine in 1916 and su bsequently sank as well.
Each ship was coal-powered by several boilers constantly kept runni ng by exhausted crews below deck. Most recognizable of the ship desig ns are the ships smoke stacks, but the fourth stack was actually just artis tic in nature and served no functional purpose. While two of these ship s sank, they were all designed with double hulls (船体) believed to mak e them"unsinkable", perhaps a mistaken idea that led to the Titanic’s a nd the Britannic's tragic end.
The Olympic suffered two crashes with other ships and went on to s erve as a hospital ship and troop transport in World War I. Eventually, sh e was taken out of service in 1935, ending the era of the luxurious Olym pic class ocean liners.

3、 For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to und erstand a concept is to explain it to someone else. While we teach, we le arn ,"said Roman philosopher Seneca. Now scientists are bringing this a
ncient wisdom up-to-date. They’re documenting why teaching is suc h a fruitful way to learn, and designing innovative ways for young peopl e to engage in instruction.
Researchers have found that students who sign up to tutor others w ork harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and appl y it more effectively. Student teachers score higher on tests than pupil s who re learning only for their own sake. But how can children, still lear ning themselves teach others? One answer: They can tutor younger kid s. Some studies have found that first-born children are more intelligent t han their later-born siblings (兄弟姐妹) .This suggests their higher resul t from the time they spend teaching their siblings. Now educators are e xperimenting with ways to apply this model to academic subjects. The y engage college undergraduates to teach computer science to high sch ool students, who in turn instruct middle school students on the topic. But the most cutting-edge tool under development is the"teachable age nt"-a computerized character who learns, tries, makes mistakes and ask s questions just like a real-world pupil. Computer scientists have create d an animated (动画的) figure called Betty's Brain, who has been"taught" about environmental science by hundreds of middle school students. St udent teachers are motivated to help Betty master certain materials. Wh ile preparing to teach. they organize their knowledge and improve thei r own understanding. And as they explain the information to it, they ide
ntify problems in their own thinking.
Feedback from the teachable agents further enhances the tutors 'le arning. The agents' questions compel student tutors to think and explai n the materials in different ways, and watching the agent solve problem s allows them to see their knowledge put into action.
Above all, it's the emotions one experiences in teaching that facilitat e learning. Student tutors feel upset when their teachable agents fail, bu t happy when these virtual pupils succeed as they derive pride and satis faction from someone accomplishment.
1. What are researchers rediscovering through their studies? ()
A)Seneca's thinking is still applicable today
B)Better learners will become better teachers
C)Human intelligence tends to grow with age
D)Philosophical thinking improves instruction

A)It is a character in a popular animation
B)It is a teaching tool under development
C)It is a cutting-edge app in digital games
D)It is a tutor for computer science students
3. How does teaching others benefit student tutors? ()
A)It makes them aware of what they are strong at
B)It motivates them to try novel ways of teaching
C)It helps them learn their academic subjects better
D)It enables them to better understand their teachers
4. What do students do to teach their teachable agents?()
A)They motivate them to think independently
B)They ask them to design their own questions
C)They encourage them to give prompt feedback
D)They use various ways to explain the materials
5. What is the key factor that eases student tutors' learning? ()
A)Their sense of responsibility

4、 Nobody really knows how big Lagos is. What's indisputable is that i t s growing very quickly.
Between now and 2050, the urban population of Africa could tripl e. Yet cities in sub-Saharan Africa are not getting richer the way cities i n the rest of the world have Most urban Africans live in slums(贫民窟); m igrants are often not much better off than they were in the countryside. Why?
The immediate problem is poverty. Most of Africa is at a lower leve l of income than other regions of the world did. That means there s littl e money around for investment that would make cities liveable and mor
e productive. Without upgrades and new capacity, bridges, roads and p ower systems are unable to cope with expanding populations. With th e exception o
f South Africa, the only light rail metro system in sub-Saha ran Africa, Ethiopia. Traffic jam leads to expense and unpredictability, thi ngs that keep investors away.
In other parts of the world, increasing agricultural productivity an d went together More productive farmers meant there was a surplus tha t could feed cities in turn, that created a pool of labour for factories. Bu t African cities are different. They are too often built around consumin g natural ernment is concentrated in capitals, so is the mo ney. Most urban Africans work for a small minority of the rich, who ten d to be involved in either businesses politics. Since African agriculture i s still broadly unproductive, food is imported, consuming a portion of re venue.
So what can be done? Through African countries are poor, not all Af rican cities are In Lagos, foreign oil workers can pay as much as $65, 00 0 per year in rent for a modest apartment in a safe part of town. If that i ncome were better taxed, it might provide the revenue for better infrast ructure. If city leaders were more accountable to their residents, they mi ght favour projects designed to help them more. Yet even as new road s are built, new people arrive. When a city s population grows by 5% a y ear iris.
