The clock struck twelve. "Oh, dear!" I cried. "Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!" We pupils are the most wretched creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy.
The clock struck one. I was quite desperate now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. I prayed, "Oh, God, please help me pass the exam tomorrow. I do promise to work hard afterwards, Amen." My eyes were so heavy that I could hardly open them.

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This
means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientists just need to find the wrong gene and correct it and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture (produce) human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep; therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.
63. What does “these two killers” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. Gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.
B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby
C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease
D. Hereditary diseases and cancer
64. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.
B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.
C. Gene technology can help people to give birth to a baby.
D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out
65. What is the main purpose of writing this passage?
A. Expressing the wri ter’s idea that gene technology will benefit people
B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology
C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people
D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity
66. Which of the following worries people by using this technology?
A. Scientists have already successfully cloned sheep.
B. Most couple will normally give birth to babies.
C. A good number of babies will be cloned
D. The government will take action to control it.

Forget Miami, Los Angeles and New York. The next big Latin music explosion is on its way in secondary markets across the United States, and the numbers are there to back it up. Among all kinds, Latin music was the only one registering growth in 2005. From tiny Vero Beach in northern Florida to Des Moines, Iowa, in the heart of the Midwest, from Charlotte, N.C.to Salt Lake City, Latin music sales are skyrocketing.
Wilson says there are two major reasons for the increase. One is simply the Hispanic(来自说西班牙语国家的) population’s increase in specific areas, which encourages shops to carry Latin product for the first time. Second, and perhaps more important, is the fact that major companies-whether dealing in music or not-are addressing the Latin consumer at a corporate(公司的) level, creating Latin departments and hiring Latin ad agencies. One of Handleman’s suburban Detro it shops, for example, has expanded (扩张) its Latin section four times in the last two years. Cities like Milwaukee and Des Moines are now stocking Latin product.
Besides, it also results from economic development. It goes something like this: more often
than not, a city or country with a seemingly important Hispanic population will suddenly expand its construction or offer affordable housing to those working in larger, neighboring cities. This attracts lower-income workers, many of whom are Latin. Small shops and groceries begin to stock a small selection of music. When the Latin population numbers reach a critical mass, the local mass merchant, if there is one, begins stocking the product. Sooner or later, a local radio station follows; first AM, then FM. S ometimes it’s a cable TV show or a small TV station.
Of course, there are other driving forces that should not be forgotten, for example, regional Mexican music.
67. The passage mainly tells readers _______.
A.that more and more Americans like Latin music
B.what makes Latin music develop fast in American market
C.why Latin music becomes Americans’ favorite music
D.that Latin music is bringing in more benefits for Americans
68. The underlined word “skyrocketing” in the first paragraph means “_______”.
A.changing very quickly B.disappearing slowly
C.recovering slowly D.increasing very quickly
69. According to the third paragraph, which shows the right relations among the following things?
①economic development ②more Latin workers
③shops’ stock o f Latin music ④local radio station
⑤small TV station ⑥the development of Latin music
A.①B.①C.①D.①↓↘↙↓
②⑤②②②
↙↓↘↑↓↙↘
③④⑤⑥③③④⑤③④⑤⑥
↘↓↙↖↙↖↑↗
⑥④⑥
70. Suppose that the passage doesn’t finish, which of the following may be discussed next?
A.The variety of Latin music in America.
B.The economic development in Hispanic area.
C.The historic development of regional Mexican music.
D.The driving forces of regional Mexican music.

短文写作:
Dear friends,
As we all know, we are what we eat. Therefore, it's very important for us to form healthy eating habits.
However, bad eating habits are still very common among us students. Some of us often go to school without breakfast; some like to have snacks; some others are particular about food; and still
some eat or drink too much. All these bad habits will surely do harm to our health.
To keep fit, we should have various healthy diets, which generally include proper amounts of fish, meat, vegetables, fruit as well as main food. Besides, we'd better have meals regularly.
In my opinion, we should try to develop healthy eating habits to build up a strong body. Only in this way can we have enough energy to study better.
That’s all. Thank yo u!

M: Madam, do you hear that there are four things you are absolutely supposed to do while in Beijing?
W: What are they?
M: One is climbing the Great Wall, one is visiting the Summer Palace, the others are eating Beijing Roast Duck and shopping in Xiushui Market. Yesterday the US former president George Bush with his family went shopping in Xiushui Market, and bought seven silk shirts. W: Oh, Xiushui Market is well-known. It’s also called Silk Street. I want to order a silk dress. How soon will it be sent to me?
M: Wang Zili, general manager of the Xiushui Market said, at least eight hours after taking an order. So it is efficient.
W: Okay. Good. And where is the famous Peking Duck restaurant?
M: You mean the Quanjude Restaurant?
W: Yes. That’s the one. Is it easy to find?
M: Yes, very easy. It’s on Qianmen Street.
W: It’s just south of Tian’anmen Square, isn’t it? Okay, I will go there tomorrow.

M: No, that’s all right. I haven’t got any. I wasn’t intending to stay for the night in town, but I missed my plane. By the way, do you happen to have a store? I need a toothbrush and some envelopes.
W: We have one on the left of the hall, but it is already closed.
M: I really need these things. Is there a store anywhere that’s open at this hour?
W: Certainly, that’s not too difficult. Just a ten minutes’ walk. There is one open 24 hours. Turn right when you leave the hotel. Go to the second stoplight and turn left. You’ll see the store on the right-hand side of the road.
