I liked adventure. Once I decided to climb a mountain and asked my uncle for advice. He said, “Unfortunately, I am so busy these days. But if no one leads, you are likely to be lost. 〞
I said, “What am I afraid of? If lost, I will call you for help. 〞He said with a smile, “Well, I hope you will not get lost. Good luck. 〞I confidently said, “I think I’ll certainly be able to return safely.〞
I finally set off by myself. Everything was very smooth at first. When I came close to the top, a sudden strong wind burst. I had to find a shelter to hide my sleeping bag inside. The sight of a tailor-shop gave me a strong wish to throw off my old clothes and get a new suit. Could I afford it?
No, I had nothing in the world but a million-pound note. So I forced myself to go on by. But soon I was drawing back again.
The temptation troubled me cruelly. I must have passed that shop six times during that struggle. At last I gave in; I had to. I asked if they had a cheap suit. The fellow I spoke to made no answer at first, looked me up and down, noticed that I was almost in rags 〔衣衫褴褛〕, then said, “Just a minute.〞
I waited till he had finished his work. Then he took me into a back room to choose a cheapest suit for me. I put it on. It didn’t fit, but
it was new and I was anxious to have it, so I said shyly:“Could you wait a few days for the money? I haven’t any small change on me.〞
The fellow looked at me coldly and said, “Oh, you haven’t? Well, of course, I know that gentlemen like you carry only large notes.〞
I was angry, and said, “My friend, you shouldn't judge a stranger always by the clothes he wears. I am quite able to pay for this suit;
I simply didn't wish to put you to the trouble of changing a large note. 〞“Why do you think we can’t change your note? Instead, we can.〞
I handed the note to him and said: “Oh, very well, I apologize.〞
He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.
Realizing what was going on, the owner of the shop gave a low whistle and talked excitedly, as if to himself.
“To sell such a suit as that to a millionaire! Tod’s a fool. Ple ase get those clothes off, sir. Wait till you see what we’ll make for you to your own measure.〞
Before I could get in a word he had measured me, and was giving orders for evening suits, morning suits, shirts and all sorts of things. 32. The underlined word “temptation〞 in paragraph 1 has the same meaning with ________.
A. attraction
B. happiness

C. The note the author carried was too large to change.
D. The shop owner recognized the author was a millionaire at the first sight..
34. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The author liked the suit very much and decided to have it.
B. Both Tod and the owner of the shop welcomed the author warmly.
C. The author was looked down upon because of the clothes he wore.
D. The author couldn’t have any new suit because he had no small change.
35. What does the passage mainly tell us?

Nowadays people can see dinosaurs only in the films. As time goes
by, more and more wild animals are becoming out of sight. 1 To our great comfort, scientists are taking the first step. All around the world, teams of scientists are racing against time to collect DNA material from endangered animals before they disappear. They hope that if it is frozen and stored, it could help them to one day bring an extinct (灭绝的) animal back to life with cloning (克隆) technology.
2 It was created by the Zoological Society of London, the UK’s National History Museum and the University of Nottingham. Scientists collect DNA material from animals in zoos and those in the wild and freeze and store them at the University of Nottingham.
Frozen Ark says that it could provide a back-up plan if all other conservation〔保护〕efforts fail.
3 “Like Dolly the sheep, although scientists do not like to talk too much about this, there is a very real possibility that we might be able to one day bring back an extinct animal. It will come true.〞 said Ann Clark from Frozen Ark.
While bringing extinct animals back from the dead sound like science fiction, thanks to recent developments in cloning technology, it is much closer to reality than you might think. 4 The animal died short after birth, but it marked the beginning of this new conservation biology. 5
But as long as action is taken by scientists, I’m sure our future generations will still be able to see those lovely animals.A. There is a long way to go.
B. This program was called Frozen Ark.
C. It’s really hard to froze and store animals.
D. Many extinct animals have been brought back.
E. Nothing in the world is that easy at the beginning.
F. So it’s high time that we did something to protect them.
G. In 2021, a Spanish team made a clone of the extinct Pyrenean ibex.第三:英语知识运用〔共两节,总分值45分〕
