Keeping friendship for a long time is not an easy thing. Making a good friend is almost like adding a new family member. It comes with risk and responsibility.
“Friends are kind of scary sometimes,” said Mary, 14, who has believed some friends with secrets and regretted it. “Not them in person, but the thought of them in general. It’s almost like you are investing(投资)in this person, whoever it may be.”
Sometimes what a good friend needs from you is just honesty, not a cheerleader. Gretchen, 15, said. “A true friend is a person who would really tell you how bad you look in that bright pink dress, even though you really like it.”
Angelica told the story of a friendship that began in the kindergarten. She remembers how close they were back in the days when she helped her friend. But her friend moved away recently and hasn’t returned her calls. Angelica has heard that her friend now hangs out with the young men who drink and take drugs. “I know what these things can do to her,” Angelica said, “and I could help her again. But I feel too far away.”
Distance can make things difficult. Many teens told of friendships that soured(恶化)after their friend began seeing someone else.
“I think the nicest thing a friend ever did for me was to decide that she would still be my friend this school year even after I became angry at her hanging out with other people,”14-year-old Darilynn said. “I love her for that… I’ve learned my lesson.”

What animal spends almost half of its day cleaning its fur? What animal eats while lying on its back? It’s the sea otter(水獭), of course.
The sea otter is a mammal that has thick, soft, brown-black fur with a bit of gray in it. On a large sea otter, there are about 650,000 hairs for each square inch of fur. The sea otter needs this thick fur to keep warm because it doesn’t have blubber(海兽脂)like other sea mammals do. Air gets trapped in the sea otter’s fur coat. This helps the sea otter keep warm and prevents it from sinking in the water.
The sea otter is about four feet long. The males weigh 70-90 pounds, and the females weigh 40-60 pounds. Sea otters have s strong sense of smell, sharp eyesight, and excellent hearing. They also have strong, sharp teeth to help them tear their food apart.
The sea otter lives in only a few places in the world. One place is in the shallow waters off Alaska. Other places are the Commander Islands, the Aleutian Islands, and the coast of northern Japan. Another place is in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
The sea otter has one unusual feeding habit. It lies on its back with a rock on its stomach and knocks open its food on the rock with its paws. It’s one of only a few animals that use tools. The sea otter likes to eat crabs, shrimp, snails, shellfish, and rock oysters.
The sea otter has some other unusual characteristics too. For example, it eats one quarter its size in seafood each day. It also spends almost half of its day cleaning its fur. When sea otters sleep, they often wrap themselves in a kind of seaweed.
64 The underlined word “This” in the second paragraph refers to ___________.
A. the air in the fur coat
B. the fur coat
C. the hairs for each square inch of fur
D. the blubber
65. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a strong sense of sea otters?
A. Smell
B. Taste
C. Sight
D. Hearing
66. We can learn from the passage that ____________.
A. a large sea otter has about 650,000 hairs on it
B. a female sea otter is far stronger than a male one
C. the sea otter eats very little seafood every day
D. the sea otter likes sleeping in a kind of seaweed

The next time you take a bath, watch what happens when you pull the plug from the drain (排水口)in the bathtub. You will see the water swirl quickly down the drain. The water will spin(旋转)fast enough to create a whirlpool(漩涡). That is similar to how black holes work.
How Do Black Holes Work?
Black holes use the power of gravity. Gravity is the force that draws everything toward the center of a planet or a star. For example, the pull of Earth’s gravity keeps us on the ground. We would float off into space if there were no gravity.
Now imagine this. The pull of a black hole is many times more powerful than the pull of the sun. It is so powerful that even light cannot escape its pull. That is why it is called a black hole.
How Do Black Holes Form(形成)?
Black holes are formed when giant stars die. Young stars burn gases that give off heat. Finally stars get old and run out of gas and heat. When this happens, they shrink. As they get smaller and smaller, the pull of their gravity grows stronger and stronger. In time they get so small that they cannot be seen.
How Do We Know Black Holes Are There?
Scientists first predicted the existence of black holes more than 200 years ago. However, they did not have any way to prove their idea.
In 1900 the United States sent a special spacecraft to space. This spacecraft carried a very powerful telescope called Hubble Space Telescope. Scientists couldn’t see a black hole directly; however, they could see circling gases in outer space. The circling gases looked like the whirlpool that water makes when it rushes down a bathtub drain. These whirlpools proved that black holes really exist.
67. What do black holes use to pull things in?
A. Whirlpool
B. Wind
C. Gravity
D. Light
68. The underlined word “swirl” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ___________.
A. take
B. spin
C. pull
D. see
69. The black hole got its name because ___________.
A. it causes young stars to die
B. it keeps light from escaping
C. it keeps people from floating into space
D. it pulls water down a drain
70. The author begins the passage with the description about the bathtub drains to _________.
A. gives a simple example of how black holes work
B. tell us how the sun’s gravity keeps the planets in place
C. explain why scientists began to believe that black holes exist
D. show what happens when a star gets old and loses its energy
