Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Richard Parry and I'm the school director.I do hope you've all had a good journey, although I'm sure you must be feeling rather tired. No doubt you are looking forward to meeting the families you're going to be staying with during the next month. Now,please listen carefully to the following arrangements as the various families are waiting in groups to meet you.
If your surname—your family name that is—begins with the letter A to F,your host family will be waiting for you in this hall.At the end of the meeting, you should wait behind in here. Now,for those of you whose name begins with G to L—you should go downstairs, not upstairs, but downstairs to the dining room. When you get there, make sure you go to the far end of the room by the drinks machine. That's important as people whose names begin with a letter from M to R should also go downstairs and wait at the opposite end of the dining room near the doors into the garden. And the final group—those of you with names from S to Z,must go out of this hall, past the office to the car park—where the bus stopped when you arrive all right?—out to where the cars are parked by the main gate and your families will be waiting there.
18Who is the speaker most probably speaking to?
A.Football players ready for a match.

Ⅳ.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
British scientists have done something that many people thought was impossible:they created the first clone of an adult mammal(哺乳动物).The clone, named Dolly,
is a sevenmonthold sheep, grown from a cell of an adult female sheep.
What is a clone?A clone is a copy—a genetic copy.Genes are the instructions for life. They tell a cell what to do and how to do it.Genes make each individual plant or animal different and unique. But a clone has the same genes as the original organism(生物体).
Cloning is not new.Plants have been cloned for centuries.New plants are often grown from cutting from another plant. Also, plants like pineapples, strawberries and carnations(康乃馨)are sometimes cloned. One benefit of cloning is that we can make many copies of the best and healthiest plants.
It has been much more difficult to clone animals.Frogs have been cloned, but they died as tadpoles, never living long enough to become adult frogs.Mice, sheep and cattle have been cloned from embryos(胚胎).But Dolly is the first healthy clone of an adult mammal. How did they do it?
(1) An unfertilized egg was taken from a sheep.
(2) The egg nucleus(细胞核)was removed.
(3) A cell was taken from the udder(乳房) of a pregnant(怀孕的)sheep. It was “starved”,so that it stopped growing.
(4) The two cells were combined into one and then implanted in a third sheep, where it grew normally.
(5) The clone was born.It was genetically identical to the pregnant sheep in step (3).
This sounds much easier than it actually was.To end up with one clone, the scientists started with 277 udder cells. And they needed in a way to make the egg cell accept a new nucleus. They did that by starving the cell in step (3).It may soon be possible to clone many types of animals. Will we also be able to clone human organs,or even whole human beings? We have only begun to think about the morality of cloning technology.Maybe the question to ask is not whether we can clone humans, but instead, should we clone humans?
56Dolly is a sheep ______because she is grown from a cell of an adult female sheep.
A.that has not her father B.that has not her mother
C.that has no parents D.that has not any tail
57Tell which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Only plants can be cloned.
B.Only strawberries and carnations can sometimes be cloned.
C.Animals and plants have quite a long history of cloning.
D.Genes can tell a cell what to do and how to do it during cloning.
58From the fourth paragraph we can know that ______.
A.a tadpole is the early stage of a grownup frog
B.a tadpole is a frog without a tail
C.a tadpole is a kind of animal
D.a tadpole is a clone of an adult mammal
59Which is the right order in the process of the clone of Dolly?
a.Taking an unfertilized egg from an adult female sheep.
b.Removing the egg's nucleus.
c.Combining the two cells into one and then implanting it in a third sheep.
d.Taking a cell from the udder of a pregnant sheep.

Although the use of cloning to produce copies of humans has been suggested, many people would judge this to be morally wrong. In addition, the prospect of cloning humans raises false expectations, since human personality is only partly determined by genes.Cloning a sick or dying relative would provide a genetically identical copy of that person, but this new individual would likely develop a quite different personality.Similarly,a copy of an athlete, movie star,or scientist might_well choose another career because of chance events during his or her lifetime. One hypothetical scenario involves a childless couple who wish to make a copy of one or the other partner rather than having a child by artificial insemination. The social concern is that the parents would not be able to treat naturally a child who was a copy of one of them.
The impetus behind the research that led to Dolly was not to find a way to clone humans but rather to develop genetically engineered animals that would serve a variety of purposes. As there are great genetic differences in cattle herds and sheep flocks, breeding copies of selected livestock would increase the efficiency of agricultural productivity and help improve/boost the quality of such commercial products as milk, beef, and wool.
As in the management of other breeding schemes,it will be important for scientists to maintain the balance between intense selection of livestock and the maintenance of genetic variability.Preservation of frozen cells from a large number of representatives of different breeds would allow nuclei from those donor cells to be used as required. The ethical issues in animal cloning are perhaps less controversial than with humans;nevertheless, some people worry that producing large number of animal clones only increase the likelihood that these animals will be mistreated.
Genetic modification of livestock will also provide new opportunities in medicine and research.Today many patients in need of transplants die before organs become available from suitable donors.Cloning pigs has been suggested as a means of rapidly achieving transplantation, the use of animal organs to replace organs in human ans transplanted between species are in danger of being destroyed within minutes by the acute immune response of the body receiving the transplant;however, strategies are being developed to modify pigs genetically so that rejection by the immune system may be effectively prevented.
60According to the passage people object to the use of cloning to produce copies of humans mainly because______.
A.its technique is not good enough
B.it is immoral and leads to wrong expectations
C.it may lead to parents' unnatural behavior to the copy of them
D.it may lead to many people's unemployment
61In breeding copies of selected livestock, scientists should take consideration of all the following aspects EXCEPT ______.
A.the balance between extreme selection of livestock and continuation of genetic variability
B.illtreatment of the copied animals
C.preservation of frozen cells
D.intense opposition to animal cloning

D.Another potential medical application of cloning.
63What is the author's attitude towards the technique of cloning?
A.In favor of cloning both animals and humans.

A 10monthold baby boy died last year and his sad parents have vowed to give him a second chance at life. They've paid $500 000 to have a company called Clonaid make a clone of their son.“We will do all that is possible to bring the twin of this boy back to life,” said Brigitte Boisselier, director of Clonaid.
Boisselier is not alone in her desire to duplicate(复制) a human.Another team of scientists recently announced that they, too, have begun a similar experiment. If either team is successful in copying a human being,it will be a truly earthshaking event.
In 1997,Sottish researcher Ian Wilmut created the world's first animal clone:a sheep named Dolly.First,he removed an egg cell from an adult female sheep. Then he used a fine needle to suck out the egg's nucleus(核子).Next,Wilmut removed a skin cell from another sheep—the sheep he wished to copy.He combined the two cells with a charge of electricity and got an egg from one animal that contained the DNA of another. The new egg cell divided and developed into an embryo (the first stage of a baby).Wilmut then implanted the embryo in the mother sheep. In time, the embryo developed into a lamb—Dolly.
Four years later, sheep, mice, cows, and goats, have been “produced” in laboratories around the globe. Now,the race is on to produce the first human clone. Two scientific teams are publicly competing for the first place.Human cloning is “just around the corner,” said Zavos,a scientist of a team.“The genie (妖怪) is out of the bottle.” Clonaid's lab may be moved to another country because the U.S.Food and Drug Administration(FDA) has forbidden the lab's research.
64Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Ian Wilmut will help to clone the first human in the world.
B.Ian Wilmut cloned the first animal with the help of electricity.
C.The two teams are working hard to realize the parents' dream.
D.The parents paid $500 000 to have their son come back to life.

With only about 1000 pandas left in the world,China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species. That's a more similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”.
Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct,Dr Duane Kraemer,a professor in Texas A & M'S College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China,is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week,Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes.“They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk,so it is worth the effort.” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M,the firstever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah's Ark.We're both trying to save animals that face extinction.I certainly appreciate their effort and there's a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do.It's a research that is very much needed.”
68The aim of “Noah's Ark” project is to ______.
A.make efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B.save endangered animals from dying out
C.collect DNA of endangered animals to study
D.transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
69According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of ______.
A.available panda eggs B.host animals
C.qualified researchers D.enough money
70The best title for the passage may be ______.
A.China's Success in Pandas Cloning
B.The First Cloned Panda in the World
C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas
D.China—the Native Place of Pandas Forever
71From the passage we know that ______.
A.Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B.scientists try to implant a panda's egg into a rabbit
C.Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches
D.about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century

Scientists say they have developed pigs that produce omegathree fatty acids
(欧米加3脂肪酸).These fatty acids are believed to help fight heart disease. But it could be some time before these experimental pigs go to market.
The animals are clones, genetic copies of each other. The Food and Drug Administration has never approved a cloned animal for use as food.Still, some people believe Americans might someday buy the new pork if they see it as hearthealthy.
Professor Jing Kang at Harvard Medical School took the first step in the work that led to the cloned pigs. His research suggests that no mammal (哺乳动物) naturally produces omegathree fatty acids. So Doctor Kang genetically produced mice with a gene that can create them from another fatty acid.
He took the gene from a kind of small worm that scientists had studied for years.Doctor Kang published his findings with two other researchers in 2004.
This research led the way for Randall Prather at the University of Missouri to clone pigs that can do_the_same_thing.Pigs have been cloned before, but not for a purpose like st month,Nature Biotechnology published a report describing how the experiment was done.Seventeen scientists took part in the study.
Fatty acids are the building materials of fat.Omegathree fatty acids are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease. They are also thought to reduce levels of harmful cholesterol (胆固醇) in the blood.
The human body can make most kinds of fat by itself out of sugars. But it cannot make omegathree or omegasix fatty acids. These must come from foods or dietary supplements.
But it is still not clear how soon genetically engineered animals might be approved for Americans to eat.
72If the new cloned pigs are received by American people, that are probably because______.
A.they can make most kinds of fat by themselves
B.they are more delicious than the common pork
C.they are hearthealthy and can reduce levels of harmful cholesterol D.they are supported by scientists who clone pigs
73What do the underlined words “do the same thing” (in Paragraph 5) refer to?
A.Clone a pig.
B.Clone a mouse.
C.Make omegathree fatty acids.
D.Take the gene from a kind of small worm.。
