What’s the furthest you have ever cycled?
Perhaps you cycle to school or to work, or maybe at most a short cycling trip with friends? How would you feel about spending months on the road travelling on your own from the UK to China, by bike?
For the British cyclist Pete Jones, camping in the wild and cycling long distances through inhospitable terrain(无人区) are his second nature.
An experienced explorer through places such as the Tianshan Mountains and the Tibetan Plateau, Mr. Jones is currently taking a great journey across the Eurasian continent from Britain to China.
Having lived on and off(断断续续地) in Xinjiang for three years, and having visited the country many times since 1992, Pete Jones is no stranger to China. But he says many people there are puzzled by his strong love for cycling, asking why he would choose to cycle when he can afford a car. Indeed, while there are about 400 million bicycles in China, where it has long been the preferred means of transport, rapid economic growth has caused a rapid development in car ownership. Edward Genochio, another British cyclist who completed a 41,000km trip to China and back, said one of his goals was to “tell people cycling is a safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly means of getting about.”
In the UK, the last few years have seen a rise in the number of people choosing two wheels over four, with some estimates saying the number of people cycling to work has almost doubled in the last five years. Politicians also see cycling as a way to prove that they are concerned about the environment, with people such as London mayor Boris Johnson often riding to work under his own steam. But we may have to wait some time before we see him emulating(效仿) Pete Jones in attempting to cycle all the way to China.

B. to vote for the mayor of London
C. to call for more people to protect the environment
D. to raise money to buy a car
59.According to the passage, what doesn’t help Pete Jones make the great trip?
A. Being unable to afford a car
B. Having visited China many times
C. Having lived in China for some time
D. Being quite experienced in such trip
60.The author is _________ the intention of Boris Johnson’s cycling
A. supportive to

Videodisc(视频,视盘) holds great promise of helping to meet the needs of American schoolchildren who have problems seeing, hearing, speaking, or socializing.
Almost eleven percent of the students aged 3~21 in this country have an impairment that affects their ability to benefit from a regular education program. Handicapped students require special education because they are often different from most children in one or more of the following ways: mentally retarded (发展迟缓的), learning-disabled, emotionally disturbed, visually handicapped, physically handicapped, or other health impairments. The education of these handicapped children is rewarding but challenging.
A special education student usually needs a longer period of time to acquire information. Repetitive teaching techniques are often beneficial, and indefatigable(孜孜不倦的) consistency on the part of the teacher is frequently necessary. Interactive videodisc courseware has characteristics that can be made use of to meet the challenges that special education poses. A videodisc program is patient. Repetition of any videodisc lesson can continue endlessly, and designers can assure absolute consistency within a program. Most important, according to special educator William Healey of the University of Arizona, is that videodisc “adds an extra aspect of realism for children who need graphic(图样的,生动的)representations”.
Healey explained that deaf and mentally retarded children especially have difficulty grasping figurative ( 比喻的) language and higher-order language concepts. He believes that for special education, the power of videodisc lies in the ability of the technology to visually represent language concepts normally taken for granted by non-handicapped persons. Complex figurative language forms such as idioms come most readily to mind as being difficult for handicapped learners.
66. The underlined word “impairment” probably means ________.
A. habit
B. disability
C. misconception
D. belief
67. A videodisc courseware is beneficial to those who have study difficulties because ________.
A. its fancy design is very attractive
B. it allows the user to go back to where he wants to restudy
C. the content of it is healthy and promising
D. it is developed by university professors
68. According to Professor Healey, we may infer that mentally retarded children perhaps ______.
A. need graphic representations in order to understand higher-order language concepts
B. are good at studying English idioms but often fail to grasp higher-order language concepts
C. are not very patient with videodisc which helps them to understand the world concepts
D. tend to be deaf as well and have difficulty learning the simple concept "before and after"
69. The best phrase that summarizes the main idea of the text is ________.
A. handicapped students and their problems
B. computer assisted teaching programs
C. videodisc and special education
D. normal children and handicapped kids
70. The special education mentioned in the text is mainly concerned with ______.
A.genius students from day-care centers to colleges
B.students who are fond of computer video games
C.students who are either mentally or physically disabled
D.teachers of language in the University of Arizona
D
“Welcome to the U.S.A.! Major credit cards are accepted!”
By the millions they are coming no longer the tired, the poor masses longing for a better living. These are the wealthy. “We don't have a budget,” says a tourist from Brazil, as she walks with two companions through New York City's South Street. “We just use our credit cards.”
The US has long been one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, but this year has been more impressive. First, there was the World Cup, which drew thousands from every corner of the globe; then came the weakening of the US dollar. Now the US, still the world’s superpower, can also claim to be the world's bargain basement. Nobody undersells America these days on just about everything, from consumer electronics to fashion clothes. Bottom retail prices anywhere from 30 % to 70% lower than those in Europe and Asia have attracted some 47 million visitors, who are expected to leave behind $ 79 billio n in 1994. That’s up from $74 billion the year before.
True, not everyone comes just for bargains. There remains a fascination in the rest of the world with all things American, made known widely by Hollywood films and US television series. Shopping in the USA is proving attractive. Every week thousands arrive with empty suitcases ready to be filled. The buying binge(无节制)has become as important as sunbathing on a beach in Florida.
The US has come at last to appreciate what other countries learned long ago: the pouring in of foreign tourists may not always be convenient, but it does put money in the bank. And with a trade deficit(赤字) at about $130 billion and growing for the past 12 months, the US needs all the money it can get. Compared with American tourists abroad, visitors to the US stay longer and spend more money at each stop; an average of 12.2 night and $ 1624 a traveler versus the Americans’ four nights and $298.
71. From what the Brazilian tourist says, we know that tourists like her ____.
A. are unwilling to carry cash with them
B. are not good at planning their costs
C. simply don’t care how much they spend
D. often spend more money than they can afford
72. The reason why 1994 was impressive is that ____.
A. it witnessed a drop in the number of tourists to the US
B. it saw an unusually large number of tourists to the US
C. tourism was hardly affected by the weakening of the US dollar that year
D. Tourists came to the US for sightseeing rather than for bargains that year
73. By saying “nobody undersells America” (Underlined), the author means that ____.
A. no other country underestimates the competitiveness of American products
B. nobody expects the Americans to cut the prices of their commodities
C. nobody prevents the selling of American goods
D. no other country sells at a lower price than America
74. Why does the author insists that all things American are fascinating to foreigners?
A. Because they have gained much publicity through the American media
B. Because they represent th e world’s latest fashions
C. Because they reflect the most advanced technology
D. Because they are available at all tourist destinations
75. From the passage we can conclude that the US has come to realize____.
A. the weakening of the US dollar can result in trade deficits
B. tourism can make great contributions to its economy
C. the lower the retail prices, the greater in profits
D. visitors to the US are wealthier than US tourists abroad
第四部分写作(共三节, 满分35分)
第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文, 并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could
produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there
is far too deep for even the tallest windmills (see picture) to touch bottom. An
experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them
anywhere.
The project, called Hywind, is the world's first large-scale deepwater wind
turbine (涡轮发电机). It represents totally new technology. The turbine will be
fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar (空心铁杆), a technology
Hywind's creator, the Norwegian company Statoil Hydro , has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cable (缆索); these will keep the spar 79________ and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability (稳定性) in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September.
To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it's difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar's centre of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean's surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades (see picture).
Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet's surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.
