I walked into my daughter's room as she was working on a science project. Normally, I would have been pleased about such a sight. But this time, her project involved much sand. While she'd put sheets of plastic under her work area, the sand was spreading all over our new floor.
My daughter felt my displeasure and began to defend herself. “1 used sheets of plastic!” she responded irritably. I responded more angrily, “But the sand is getting all over!”
“Where else am I supposed to do it?” she shouted.
“Why didn't she admit that she had done something wrong?” I thought to myself. I felt my fear, thinking of what her life would be like in the future if she couldn't realize her mistakes?
My fear was translated into more anger, this time about how important it was to admit mistakes. We had a quarrel. She said something disrespectful to me and raised her voice.
I wished this had never happened before. But my daughter and I were in embarrassment and felt terrible.
So I thought that I needed a good way to respond to my daughter. So I went to my wife and asked how I should have handled it.
“Sweetie,” she said, role-playing in the conversation with my daughter, “there's a lot of sand here and we need to clean it up before it destroys the floor. How can I help you?”
That's really a great way to deal with it: first identify the problem, next state what needs to be done and then offer to help. It's simple, right?

In recent years, Ethiopia has become a regional leader in solid waste management. Last year, the country transformed the landfill (垃圾填埋场) in Addis Ababa into a new waste-to-energy plant, the first such project on the continent. The plant incinerates up to 1,400 tonnes of waste every day, about 80 percent of the city's rubbish, supplying the capital with 25 percent of its household electricity needs.
However, despite these important steps, challenges remain in Ethiopia, Although the country has permitted the Basal, Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions, laws and policies for environmentally sound management of hazardous (有害的) wastes are still not effective in preventing littering waste illegally.
To help Ethiopia meet these challenges, the Chemicals and Waste Management Program is supporting the country with a three-year project to enhance its capacity for sound management of hazardous wastes.
In the initial stages, a project management unit will be formed. This unit will be responsible for reviewing and assessing Ethiopia's current legal system, which, despite numerous advances in recent years, does not specifically target the recycling of hazardous waste. Once legal gaps are identified, the project will seek to update existing policies and strategies.
Many people in Ethiopia are not aware of the possible effect of environmental damage and the need to report such crimes to the police. To solve this pressing issue, Ethiopia will be conducting a series of capacity-building activities, including creating awareness-raising programs, training trainers and providing equipment.
Ethiopia will also work to establish a national mechanism for chemicals and waste management by engaging government departments and civil society groups. Authorities will also make budgetary provisions (预算拨款) in national, regional and institutional planning to ensure funding for these activities is sustainable even after the project's completion.
28. Which can replace the underlined word “incinerates” in paragraph 1?
A. Burns.
B. Produces.
C. Gathers.
D. Absorbs.
29. What's the main problem of Ethiopia in waste management?
A. The funds are not sufficient.
B. The pollution level is too high.
C. The relevant laws are not sound.
D. The shortage of workers is severe.
30. What will Ethiopia do to help the natives protect the environment?
A. Restrict their environmental moment.
B. Raise their environmental awareness.
C. Call on them to start some programs.
D. Reward them with budgetary provisions.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ethiopia is putting efforts into waste management.
B. Ethiopia is facing serious environmental problems.
C. Ethiopia has achieved success in waste management.
D. Ethiopia has reduced environmental pollution levels.

Folk tales have saddled (使承担) the moon with major responsibilities: moods, increases in crime and even mental disorders are blamed on the moon. But could the “lunar effect” disturb sleep?
Scientists have long understood that human activity is affected by light, including sunlight, moonlight and artificial light. But a recent study suggests our ability to sleep is clearly affected by the lunar cycle, even when considering artificial sources of light.
Using wrist monitors, researchers tracked sleep patterns in 98 individuals living in three local communities in Argentina over the course of two months. One rural community had no electricity access, a second rural community had limited access to electricity, while a third community was located in an urban setting and had full access to electricity.
In each community, the peak(峰值) of participants sleeping less and staying up later occurred three to five days before full moon nights, and the opposite occurred on the nights before the new moon, the authors found.
Unsurprisingly, data showed the “'lunar phase effect” on sleep appeared to be stronger the more limited access to electricity was.
“The result strongly suggests that human sleep is synchronized (同步) with lunar phase,” the researchers wrote in the journal ScienceAdoances.
De la Iglesia added: “We humans tend to believe that we managed to control nature, and the use of artificial light is a great example of that. But it turns out that there are some forces of nature that we cannot get away from.”
Derk-Jan Dijk, a professor of sleep and physiology and the director of a sleep research centre at the University of Surrey, described the study as exciting but noted that the researchers had not deal with internal influences such as body clocks that could affect sleep patterns.
32. What is the recent study mainly about?
A. The harm of lunar effect.
B. The reliability of folk tales.
C. The function of artificial light.
D. The effect of the lunar cycle on sleep.
33. When did the participants in the experiment sleep least?
A. On the full moon night.
B. On the new moo night.
C. On the night after the new moon.
D. On the night before the full moon.
34. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph but one refer to?
A. Controlling nature.
B. The level of urbanisation.
C. The escape from forces of nature.
D. Synchronizing with lunar phases.
35. What did Derk-Jan Dijk think of the research findings?
A. Groundless.
B. Persuasive.
C. Incomplete.
D. Impressive.

“Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.
“Make a wish,” my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I'm a straight A student, confident and popular, but that's not what I was a year ago. It was my mom's love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.
I wish...
Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.
My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they'd laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “Whussup?”
Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier. Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don't worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You'll fit right in.”
And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn't afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.
But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don't know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

Dear John,
I'm sorry I can't go to the Nanhu Park with you this Saturday morning. My uncle phoned and asked me to pick him up at the airport at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. I have tried to find an alternative person to do it, but no other person is available.
Shall we walk in the park on Sunday morning? Please let me know whether the time is suitable for you and I am open to suggestions as well.
Looking forward to your reply.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
One day the school teacher called my mom and the truth came out. I was so depressed-I was sure I had lost my moms trust and love. “I'm sorry.” I cried. It was not until then that I realized how much she loved me. “It's okay, honey. Everything will be okay. I know it is hard, but we'll work it out together.” My mom didn't change how she viewed me despite everything I had done. I stopped seeing Caroline and devoted myself to study. Gradually, I had true friends who saw the beauty in me. My life was back on track My mom's voice awakened me from my thoughts, “have you made your birthday wish yet, sweetie?” I looked at her, tears of love and gratitude welling up in my eyes. “Yes, mom.” Then I hugged her very, very tightly. And now, staring at the yellow candles on my birthday cake, I only have one wish: That someday, somehow, I can repay my mom for raising me the way she did and for loving me no matter what.
听力原文
Text 1
W: Oh, my! Do you have my passport and glasses? I can't find them in my bag.
M: I have all of our travel documents here, but I haven't seen your glasses for hours.
W: I must have left them on the plane! I'm going to run and get them.
Text 2
W: The Statue of Liberty was the first tourist spot I visited when I arrived in New York. What about you? M: I went to Central Park, then the Museum of Modern Art.
W: Even locals go to Central Park when the weather is nice. I wouldn't exactly call it a tourist spot.
Text 3
W: Do you ever look up and wonder how amazing it is? We can see thousands of stars. All that space—there must be something like the earth out there.
M: Another thing amazes me. Those stars we see in the sky are actually dead, but their light is still traveling. Text 4
M: How about starting the club meeting at 8:00 tomorrow morning?
W: Well, 8:00 is no good for me, but why don't you guys get started and I'll come at around 8:45 or so?
Text 5
W: Could you make me something in the shape of a key?
M: For a birthday, I suppose?
W: Yes, for my daughter. I would like it to be made of red and yellow roses, with a card attached.
Text 6
W: Let's finally enter our new beach house.
M: I can't believe it's ours. The views and the ocean sounds—imagine our kids playing here someday.
W: I really love it. We've got work to do, though. You can take care of the internal pipes, design planning and painting, while I manage all of the gardening and landscaping.
M: We've got to watch our tight budget; we've already sold off most of our belongings to buy this house. W: It's an investment in our future. Besides, at least now we don't owe any home-loan money to the bank. Text 7
W: Come here, Jack! I need help taking off my snowboard. I just hurt my leg when I fell down.
M: Oh, no! Are you OK?
W: I'll just walk it off and then we can have a rest. Give me a minute, please.
M: No worries. I'd rather be relaxing at the bottom of the mountain instead. Let's go down slowly.
W: OK, I'm ready. Do you want to eat in a restaurant?
M: Yes. When we're finished with dinner and drinks, we can walk home.
W: Oh, let's take a taxi or bus home instead. It's too late at that time.
M: OK, here we go.
Text 8
M: They don't make movies like this anymore. It's from 1950s, part of Hollywood's golden age.
W: It's really great. What makes it special though?
M: The writing is better, and many of the directors have a fine style. In the 1980s, the comic book movies and action movies became popular, and you start to see the quality go down and it's only gotten worse.
W: Why aren't there good movies being made today?
M: Without considering artistic quality, studios just want to make more money. People fill up movie theaters just like this one, and also go to screenings in parks and bars, because they want to see classic movies.
W: I have heard that some new movie directors are also having very good ideas, but I have to say they are not my style.
Text 9
M: The most important thing is to always keep your head up, look ahead and stay relaxed. You got your license to operate a car three years ago, so you must know some rules about traffic.
W: As you know, I moved away six months after getting my license. And I have only taken the bus around since then. I feel I'm completely new now.
M: So do you still remember the rules of the road here?
W: Well, I have a good memory and a good sense of direction, but are all the rules the same for motorbikes and cars?
M: Mostly, but let's not worry about that. I take you to the parking lot first, so you can just master the basic skills—you don't have to worry about cars here until the stores start opening up.
W: To be honest, I think there won't be enough time. Could we also practice here on Sunday?
M: OK. We can meet tomorrow—since there won't be any cars until the afternoon. Now, it's time to go home. Mom must be worried about us.
Text 10
Dear residents, to ensure everybody's safety during this difficult time, we have decided to temporarily close the south gate and the west gate of the community from tomorrow morning. The north gate will remain open and serve as the main entry and exit point for the whole community, while the east gate will be used by garbage collection trucks only. Small adjustments have been made to the garbage collecting hours, too. Starting from next Monday, morning collection hours will start an hour later at 8:00 a.m. and last until 10:00 a.m., while evening collection hours will be between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., which is half an hour shorter than the normal schedule. In addition, please note that starting from tomorrow, delivery people will no longer be allowed to enter the community. Please pick up your goods at the north gate. Lastly, visitors such as relatives and friends will be required to register their information at the gate before entering the community. We apologize for the inconveniences that these new rules may bring you. Thanks for your cooperation.。
