13、What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practising grammar rules and learning long lists of words. That’s wrong! Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely.
Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those th at Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it’s no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.
People not only make history, but also they make languages. But they can only make their own language. They can’t create another language. So Chinese students should pay attention to the grammar, but they shouldn't overdo it. They should put communication first.
1.What is language for?
A.For practising grammar rules. B.For learning lists of words.
C.For the exchange of ideas and information. D.All above.
2.Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he ________.

B.foreigners speak incorrect English

A.what they use will become right B.they are against the law
C.they should say sorry to others D.they will become heroes
5.What is best title for the passage?
A.Making languages B.Grammar and Vocabulary
C.Communication first D.Native speakers’ mistakes

14、Using iPads to Make Learning Fun
Paper, pencil, whiteboard, textbook are the tools you need if you want to go to school. But recently, you can add another one to the list: an iPad.
Because the popular Apple tablet is not only useful for searching the Internet and watching videos, but it is also being used to make learning fun.
Scientists now know that we learn better when we are enjoying ourselves, so recently software developers have made iPad applications(应用程序) that look like video games, but have strong educational content. One of the best examples of this new form of teaching application is Futaba, a game in which up to four children try to recognize a spinning(旋转的) object, and then identify what it is. The game can be used to teach English, math, foreign languages, or just about anything, and students love it. Teachers can even make their own questions. The important thing is that children enjoy the game, and don't even realize how much they are learning!
So the next time you have to choose between making your child study or letting them play a game, just remember…they could do both at the same time!

15、Do you like to eat sushi(寿司)? Many people are afraid to eat it, because they think the bacteria(细菌) in it might make them sick. However, a new study shows that sea bacteria are good for people. The study finds that a special enzyme(酶) from sea bacteria is helpful to humans. It helps people to get more energy from food.
To people’s surprise, the enzyme is present only in the Japanese. The Japanese traditionally like to eat food rich in seaweed(海藻). And the seaweed is rich in this kind of enzyme.
However, the enzyme isn’t present in all the Japanese. During the study, just 5 out of 14 Japanese had the enzyme. All the Americans studied didn’t have the enzyme.
“The number is small,” said researcher Mirjam Czjzek. “But we can say that this enzyme is p resent only in the Japanese and not in the North Americans.”
Then some people think that maybe other people are able to get the enzyme if they eat a lot of seaweed. The study suggests that they collect uncooked seaweed to make their sushi.
Restaurant sushi is often cooked, which will destroy the enzyme. So, if you want to get that enzyme, you can travel to Japan to have a taste of the real sushi.

16、Every year in early April, thousands of people in China visit the tombs(墓) of their parents, grandparents and ancestors. It is Tomb Sweeping Day, the traditional Chinese festival to remember the dead.
Tomb Sweeping Day falls on April 4 this year. On the day, Chinese families will clean away the grass around the tombs. Then they burn paper money and put flowers and fruit in front of the tombs. They hope the dead can enjoy them and bring the family good luck.
However, it is not only the Chinese who remember the dead, people in other countries also have festivals for the dead. In Japan, O-Bon festival is one of the most important festivals. On the last day of O-bon, they put paper lanterns in a river to say goodbye to the spirits.
In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing(欣喜). It’s usually in late April or early May. The name of this festival means birth and happiness. Russians believe that people shouldn’t feel sad for the dead because death means birth in another world. On the day, Russian people draw beautiful pictures on eggs and put them in front of tombs. 17、Lin Hanxing is a 30-year-old who lives in Beijing. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of trousers, four pairs of shoes, three books and a few other things. It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, Lin was one of those people who couldn’t stop buying things. Back then, she had more than 400 pieces of clothes and handbags. But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014, introduced by Joshua Becker, a writer in the US who was promoting (推动) a minimalist lifestyle. He encouraged people to reduce the number of their belongings (财物) to fewer than 100. Lin decided to give it a try. She threw away 90 percent of her belongings. She also cleared 120 people she never spoke to from her QQ and Wechat. After doing all that, Lin said she felt ‘lighter’.
We used to think owning more was the way to lead a rich life. But now many people believe that owning less is rich, perhaps richer.
According to US writer Joel Stillerman, people who are educated and wealthy are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. These people are saying, ‘I can afford to have less.’
But leading a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t only mean owning or spending less. Adam Lucacias from a UK research company Euromonitor found young people spend less on belongings, but more on short holidays and visits to the movies.
‘They are looking for a life that is all about culture.’ Alison Angus, the manager of Euromonitor, said.
So perhaps it all comes down to how we define (定义) ‘wealth’. Is wealth in life about buying more and owning more, or is it about learning more and experiencing more?
1.Which of the following leads a minimalist lifestyle?
A.Alison Angus. B.Adam Lucacias.
C.Joe Stillerman. D.Joshua Becker.
2.What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.I can live a good life with no more education and money.
B.I can live a good life by experiencing less and learning more.
C.I can live a good life with necessary belongings and friends.
D.I can live a good life with less money and fewer belongings.
3.Lin Hanxing’s definition of ‘wealth’ may probably cover __________.
A.Owning fewer friends B.doing more learning
C.Having more holidays D.Chatting less often with peopl
