Chapter One Introduction
1.1Introduction to the thesis
At present,we are on the threshold of a new century of the boom of the intercultural communication.Among our magnificent ancient cultures,the Chinese classical poems,with their unique beauties,strongly attract more and more eyes of the east and west.To introduce this gem of our literature to the western world is a very significant way to promote the international communication.Out of this common expectation,even since the sixteenth century,a large number of master translators of at home and abroad have made their great efforts in providing the English versions of Chinese classical poems(CCPs).
However,due to the great differences between Chinese and English,the poetic translation from Chinese to English is not all easy matter.“Translated verses of poor quality not only severely
affect the spread of Chinese ancient culture,but also affect the rea ders’understanding of the Chinese classical poems”(Mu Shixiong,2004:1).Thus the translators have much heavy responsibility on their shoulders for presenting better translated works to their readers.
Mr.Xu Yuanchong,the representative of modern Chinese translators,has translated a lot of Chinese classical poems,and devotes himself to transmit Chinese culture and enhance the status of Chinese literature in the world.According to his own practice,he has established his series of translation theory,which should be summarized as“Art of Beautification,Creative Translation Being Like Competition”,in Chinese means“美化之艺术,创优似竞赛”,every Chinese character has its implied meaning,which can be explained in the following chapters.The theory of“three beauties”is the ontology and destination in his poetry translation,which can be also used in the translation of prose and fiction.
Mr.Xu Yuanchong argues that the beauties of the sound,form and meaning of the original poems should be transmitted in translating poems.The most important is the
