Last year Danny moved from Kentucky to our school. I was his painting teacher. Danny’s dad was a truck driver, and he seldom went home; his mom was busy with her work. Born into a poor family, his parents couldn’t provide him with a well-off living condition.
Last month our school had a program that provided gloves for poor children. I put Danny’s name on the list of the program. He was so happy when he received the gloves. He wore them almost everywhere and carefully
put them in his desk when he came into the classroom. One day, after school, I was tidying the desks and suddenly a glove fell out of Danny’s desk.
I opened his desk and found the other glove. The next day, when I asked him, he explained that the gloves were easily lost at home, so he didn’t take them home.
Danny studied hard. His best subject was painting. I knew he didn’t have supplies for the painting class. So every time when he needed paper, I would give him. He was really a good artist, and I showed his several works to other students to improve his sense of worth.
When the time for the Christmas gift exchange came, Danny was shy in the corn er, so I was pretty sure he couldn’t bring anything to me. The day of the Christmas party was always exciting. Danny asked me if he could have a piece of red paper. I gave it to him gladly. Later when I went back to my desk, I found a folded piece of red paper. I opened it up and read it. The note said, “To my favorite teacher Mr. Miller. You have always been here for me,and I really enjoy it. I can’t afford to get you anything, so I am giving you everything I have. Merry Christmas! Love,Danny.” I was too happy to say anything.

When I was 20, I first came to London seeking shelter on my own. After three weeks in London, the Home Office moved me to Leicester. There, I had to live with about 200 people in a small hotel. I knew nobody there, so it was very important for me to establish some friendships. Luckily, I made many good friends there.
I needed those friends more than ever when I received refugee status (难民身份)and could legally stay in the UK. I should have been happy, but I found myself homeless and broke. At that time, the Home Office kicked me out of my living place, because my financial support stopped. Fortunately, my new friends helped me out. Not only did they offer a couch
to sleep on at times, they also pointed me towards the British Red Cross. The Red Cross helped me with food and clothing. They guided me through the process, so I could get back on my feet.
With the help of the Red Cross, my situation improved slowly and I went on to study law and human limits at university. Then I decided to do something to thank the Red Cross, so I started volunteering for it. I helped with everything from fundraising (筹款)to finding people in wheelchairs. I also gave out food parcels and other supplies during the 2007 floods in Gloucestershire.
After leaving university, I was offered a job by the Red Cross because of what I had done for it at university. Now I no longer need to look for shelter. I have got married and have a happy family of three. The Red Cross helped me out. And now as a member of it, every day I can’t wait to help those who need help.

When we first gave our daughters (then 13 and 15 years old) cell phones for emergencies, we made them sign an agreement in which we strictly ruled where and when they could use their phones and even we could check their every text message. However, in less than a year, we lost control of the situation.
There is a terrible fact that almost every teenager sends 50 to 100 messages a day—some as many as 300, and that 70% of teenagers admit hiding their online behavior from parents. According to a study, teenagers need as much or more sleep than they get as children, which is between 9 and 10 hours of sleep a night, but only 20% of them are getting it. When they don’t get enough sleep, they perform poorly in school, feel very hungry, are more likely to have flu and are very emotional.
Recently, we adopted a “check in at tuck in”(盖被子时交手机)rule at our house, an idea I learnt from a parenting expert. It is very simple. At bedtime, when we “tuck in” our children for the night, they must “check in” their phones. We will probab ly bargain like this:
“But I use it for my alarm clock.”
“I’ll wake you up.”
“My friends might need me.” “If there is an emergency, they can call the fixed phone and I’ll wake you up.”
A few weeks ago, when I drove my younger daughter to a friend’s house for a sleepover, she handed me her phone. “I guess I should check this in now, since you won’t be there to tuck me in tonight .I’ll call you from Ellie’s phone if I need you.”

D. keeping in touch if something urgent happened 20. Which of the following is NOT caused by sleeping less?
A. Being very emotional.
B. Feeling very hungry.
C. Being easy to have flu.
D. Putting on more weight.
21. From the last paragraph, we can learn that____ .
A. the writer’s daughters no longer use phones
B. the writer won the “battle” with hi s / her daughters
C. the writer gave up his / her “check in at tuck in” rule
D. the writer's daughters decide to move out of home

Do you want to have a body that can support you well into your old age? Here are three things that you should do. Physical activity is essential to healthy living. The body was meant to move, and when it does not, it will become ill.
Physical activity improves circulation (循环)to our heart and lungs. It increases the "mobility in our muscles and joints. Physical activity also releases endorphins (内啡肽)----- the feel-good hormones that create a sense of general well-being. Physical activity is good for body and mind. Therefore, you should spend more time exercising.
Have you ever heard of the saying “You are what you eat” or “Garbage in garbage out”? Well,it is true. What you put into your body directly affects how you feel physically, your mood, and even your skin. Eating healthily does not mean eating expensive foods with little taste. As a
matter of fact, there are some fantastic health recipes (食谱)online and in cookbooks that are very healthy. Basically, you want to aim for a diet that is low in salt, fat and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and omega-3 fatty acids. It is also good to take vitamins to ensure that you are meeting your nutrient requirements.
We have to get rid of all the stress. Stress happens when your life becomes out of balance physically, mentally or emotionally. This imbalance can be caused by internal stress like worrying too much, environmental stress like pressure from work, family or friends, or by stress from being tired. Being stressed out has the potential to affect your health in a variety of ways. You can become tired, sick, tense, and unable to think clearly. If you want to live a healthy life, you will need to manage the stress in your life so that it cannot overtake you.
22. It can be learned that endorphins released in your body can
________.
A. improve your mood
B. build up your muscles
C. increase the mobility in your joints
D. slow down circulation to your heart
23. According to the sayings in Paragraph 3, the author wants to show that ________.
A. they are full of wisdom
B. it’s important to eat healthily
C. people are careful about their diets
D. there is healthy and unhealthy food
24. In the last paragraph, the author suggests that we should ________.
A. learn to reduce stress
B. try our best to think clearly
C. spend time with family and friends
D. avoid everything that can overtake us
25. What will the author most probably write about next?

Sunday Sunny
Today, I felt very happy to participate in the social practice in the countryside. The practice was organized by Students’ Union and it left me a deep impression.
We gathered at the school gate in the morning and then we went to the suburbs by school bus. On reaching our destination, we were warmly welcomed by the farmers. Firstly, the farmers introduced the great changes in their hometown in the past few years. What surprised and delighted us most was that their living conditions were very good. In the afternoon we were arranged to help the farmers pick fruits and vegetables, experiencing the pleasure of the harvest.
The practice left a permanent memory in my mind. I feel proud of the achievement which the farmers have made.。
