Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival as it is often called, has always been a time of great joy and celebration. The thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month, known as Chu Xi, is a significant part of this festive season. It is the day before the first day
of the new year, and it is filled with a variety of customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
On this day, my family and I would wake up early in the morning to the aroma of freshly prepared dishes. The kitchen would be bustling with activity as my mother and grandmother would be busy cooking a feast for the family. The menu would typically include a variety of dishes, each with its own symbolic meaning. For example, fish is a musthave dish, as the Chinese word for fish, yu, sounds like the word for surplus or abundance, symbolizing a wish for a prosperous year ahead.
One of the most memorable aspects of Chu Xi is the family reunion dinner. It is a time when family members, no matter how far away they may be, make an effort to come home and be together. The dinner table would be filled with laughter and conversation as we catch up on each others lives and share our hopes and dreams for the coming year. This meal is not just about the food, but also about the love and bond that we share as a family.
Another important custom on Chu Xi is the cleaning of the house. It is believed that cleaning the house on this day will sweep away any bad luck and make way for good fortune in the new year. My family and I would spend the afternoon tidying up, dusting, and sweeping every corner of the house. This task, while laborious, is also a time for bonding and teamwork
as we work together to prepare our home for the new year.
As the day progresses, the excitement in the air becomes palpable. Children would be seen running around, playing with firecrackers and fireworks. The loud pops and flashes of light fill the night sky, adding to the festive atmosphere. Firecrackers are believed to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck, making them an essential part of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
One of the most cherished traditions of Chu Xi is the giving of red envelopes, or hongbao, filled with money. This is a symbol of transferring good luck and blessings from one generation to another. As a child, I would eagerly await this moment, feeling a sense of joy and gratitude as I received my red envelope from my parents and grandparents.
As the night comes to an end, we would gather around the television to watch the Spring Festival Gala, a variety show that is broadcasted live on the eve of the new year. The show features performances of song, dance, and comedy, and it is a tradition that has been followed by Chinese families for decades. It is a time for us to relax, enjoy the entertainment, and reflect on the year that has passed.
In conclusion, the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month is a day filled with rich traditions and customs that bring our family closer together. It is a time for reunion, reflection, and preparation for the new year. As I grow older, I realize the importance of these traditions and the role they play in preserving our culture and strengthening our family bonds. The Lunar New
Year is not just a celebration of the past year, but also a hopeful look towards the future, and the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month is the perfect way to start this journey.。
