文章主要讲述了Jim Spear 因为对中国感兴趣,来到中国生活,并在长城下改造传统乡村的事迹。
13. While climbing the Great Wall is a once-in-a-lifetime dream for many, Jim Spear has taken it a step further, spending the last 18 years as a villager residing beneath this ancient wonder.
“Never did I dream I would have the chance to visit the Great Wall, let alone live under it,” said 68-year-old Spear, a self-taught architect from the United States.
Spear’s interest in China began during his college days. It deepened when he met Tang, a Chinese girl, in 1980, and they got married two years later. In 1986, he decided to drop out of his doctoral studies in Chinese politics at the University of California and moved to China “to get to the heart of things”. “I realized that if I became a scholar of China, based overseas, I wouldn’t be able to experience what was happening in China,” Spear said.
In 1995, the couple secured a long-term rent of a traditional village farmhouse in Mutianyu and decided to make it their full-time home ten years later. Shortly after possessing full-time village life, he rented an abandoned schoolhouse and transformed it into a restaurant and art glass factory for a sustainable tourism business. He also turned a former factory into a hotel and helped renovate (翻新) over 20 households into restaurants. Besides, he explored other ways to support those residents in rural areas. “I want to do something for them,” Spear said.
Spear’s designs reflect his natural talent for fusing (融合) traditional and modern elements, adopting the Great Wall style. However, Spear emphasized his approach involves creating designs and views “that echo (呼应) the Great Wall, not copy it”. In 2014, Spear received the Great Wall Friendship Award from the Beijing government.
Talking about the future, Spear sees abundant possibilities in China, driven by significant domestic demand and a growing emphasis on preserving historic structures.
1. What do we know about Spear from the first two paragraphs?
A.He likes to climb the Great Wall.B.He came to China when he was 18.
C.He once dreamed of becoming a villager.D.He has lived beneath the Great Wall for years.
2. What’s Spear’s purpose of moving to China when he was in college?
A.To see a real China.B.To marry a Chinese girl.
C.To work as an architect.D.To study Chinese politics.
3. What is special about Spear’s designs?
A.They are inspired by rural residents.B.They copy the style of the Great Wall.
C.They have received a world-wide prize.D.They connect the past with the present.
4. What will Spear possibly plan to do in the future?
A.Continue to engage in cultural exchange.B.Work for another award in structure preserving.
C.Find more ways to support the rural residents.D.Conduct further study in Chinese historic structures.
14. The bristlecone pine is the longest-living thing on the earth. These trees, with their strangely-shaped, wind-beaten limbs(枝干), can live up to 5,000 years. But experts worry that a warming climate in some areas may threaten its future.
Researchers say warmer weather is permitting a similar kind of tree, the limber pine, to take over good growing places from the ancient bristlecone. They say the tree is being crowded out of mountainous areas where it grows.
“The bristlecone pine is the oldest individually growing organism,” researchers say. They grow in high mountain forests in eastern California, Nevada and Utah. In those mountains, the trees face high winds and extreme temperatures, which leave them with twisted limbs and shapes. “Even in such tough conditions,” Brian Smithers, a researcher at the University of California, said, “the limber pine is taking all the good spots.”
The limber pine is the bristlecone’s distant relative and competitor. It can also live a long time——up to 2,000 years. And it is usually found at lower altitudes, where temperatures are warmer. However, according to a three-year study which centered on trees that have started growing in the last 50 years in California’s White Mountains, most of the trees growing at higher altitudes were limber pines.
Scientists compared the competing species to two o1d men in a very slow race up a mountainside. This race between such slow-growing trees takes thousands of years. They say climate change is causing the competition.
Smithers said the bristlecone pines are not in danger of disappearing. But he assumes they could be crowded out of some places where they have grown for thousands of years.
The researchers say the findings show how climate change can affect the two kinds of trees. The information, they say, can help scientists understand more complex forests.
1. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a topic.B.To summarize the whole passage.
C.To describe the appearance of a tree.D.To praise the hard work of the experts.
2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.There will be older trees sent out of those mountains.
B.There will be more places covered with bristlecone pines.
C.There will be better limber pines replacing the ancient ones.
D.There will be fewer bristlecone pines growing in those areas.
3. According to the passage, the reason why limber pines can grow at higher altitudes is_________.
A.the high winds B.the difficult conditions
C.the changing climate D.the extreme temperatures
4. What is the researchers’ attitude towards the future of the bristlecone pine?
A.Positive.B.Concerned.
C.Enthusiastic.D.Indifferent.

15. A new study shows that rising levels of planet-warming gasses may reduce important nutrients in food crops.
Other studies have shown that higher temperatures from climate change and weather extremes will reduce food production. But scientists are finding that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other planet-warming gasses threaten food quality.
Researchers studied the effects of one such gas—carbon dioxide—on rice. They grew 18 kinds of rice in fields in China and Japan in a controlled environment. They set carbon dioxide levels to what scientists are predicting for our planet by the end of the century. They found that the resulting rice crops had lower than normal levels of vitamins, minerals and protein.
Rice grown under high carbon dioxide conditions had, on average, 13 to 30 percent lower levels of four B vitamins and 10 percent less protein. The crops also had 8 percent less iron and 5 percent less zinc (锌) than rice grown under normal conditions.
The researchers said the effects of planet-warming gasses would be most severe for the poorest citizens in some of the least developed countries. These people generally eat the most rice and have the least complex diets, they noted. Scientists estimated that almost 150 million people might be at risk of having too little protein or zinc in their diet by 2050.
One scientist, Sam Myers of Harvard University of Massachusetts, US, said that findings like this are an example of the surprises climate change creates. “My concern is, there are many more surprises to come,” he said.
Myers noted that pollution, loss of some species, destruction of forests, and other human activities are likely to produce unexpected problems. He said that you cannot completely change all the natural systems that living organisms have grown to depend on over millions of years without having effects come back to affect our own health.
The new study suggests a way to lower the nutritional harm of climate change—to grow different forms of rice that have shown to be more resistant to higher carbon dioxide levels.
1. According to the latest study, how do higher temperatures affect crops?
A.They remove the nutrition.B.They worsen the quality.
C.They lower the production.D.They decrease the species.
2. What can be inferred from the text?
A.Asian crops contain more nutrients.B.Rice is grown in restricted conditions.
C.Crops grown with lower CO2 are healthier.D.Poor people suffer a lot from food shortage.
3. What does Sam Myers agree with?
A.Natural systems damage our health.B.The nutritional harm should be lowered.
C.More effects are caused by climate changes.D.Human activities result in health problems.
4. What does the writer intend to do?
A.To introduce a study.B.To clarify a fact.
C.To make a suggestion.D.To show a concern.

文章介绍了提高英语阅读能力的方法。
17. Many people who are learning English want to know how to improve their reading skills. 1 The effective way to improve your reading
skills is to love reading and practice more.
Reading is one of the most important language skills because we use it to expand our vocabulary and improve the way we speak, write and listen.
2 Seeing new ways to say things can help your understanding of English and improve not only your reading, but also your other language skills.
3 If we do not understand something, we can go over it again and even look up the words we do not know the meanings of. This means
that we have a much greater chance of understanding information that we read than information that we hear.
So how do we practice reading so that our skill level improves? When we read a passage, we need to understand it. We must understand what the important words mean in each sentence. This does not mean that we need to know the meaning of every word. In many cases, we can find out what words mean from the words around them. 4 To do this, we must understand how words work together. In many cases, we must “see” part of the message that has not been written, or we must form an opinion ourselves.
Reading is an essential part of your study of the English language. It can help you understand and learn more. It can also become a satisfying hobby. 5
A.Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this.
B.Unlike listening, reading allows us to take our time.
C.Among the four skills, listening is the most important one.
D.It is hoped that you will love reading and improve your reading skills.
E.When we read, we can see how things are said, from sentence structure to expression.
F.If we do not, we will not be able to understand what the entire article or story is about.
G.Once we understand what the words mean, we need to figure out what the message is.
