第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Pollution’s disastrous effects on the environment have become more obvious in recent years, leading to a movement to promote energy efficiency (效率), less reliance on fossil (化石的) fuels and a reduction in air and water pollution. Most scientists agree that such changes are necessary to protect our environment from further harm.
The construction industry consumes a large quantity of energy and resources and creates a huge amount of pollution. In the United States, building and development account for 39 percent of the country’s total energy use, 12 percent of total water consumption, 68 percent of total electricity consumption and 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions (排放), according to the Environment Protection Agency.
Green buildings use less energy, water, create less waste and are healthier to live, work and go to school in than standard buildings. Builders of green buildings use techniques that use resources more efficiently during the entire building cycle —construction, restoration, operation, maintenance (维护) and demolition (拆毁) — than those who construct more regular buildings.
The environmental benefits of building green include the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity, improved air and water quality, less waste flowing into streams and the conservation of natural resources. Green buildings can also result in lower operating costs because they typically use less energy and fewer materials and improve indoor air quality, improving the health of people who live there.
The process of building green includes technical and artistic planning with nature conservation in mind. Building designs often reflect the surrounding environment and natural resources and use renewable building materials such as bamboo and straw. In addition, recycled resources found locally are used for green buildings, reducing the cost
and air pollution associated with transporting materials long distances.
Careful site selection is important to minimize (最小化) human impact on the surrounding environment. For example, placing a structure in an area that allows it to take advantage of cool breezes (微风) and sunlight can reduce energy use and expenses. More energy and expense are needed for larger buildings as well, so it is important to build small.
Green roofs are another feature of green houses that reduce energy use and cost. These roofs are partially or completely covered with plants, which helps to keep heating and cooling costs low, prevent water running off and deal with pollutants.
Other features of green buildings often include energy and water conservation, recycling and waste reduction. In addition, renewable energy sources such as solar power, hydropower (水能) and wind power are used for heat and electricity, which greatly reduces costs and decreases the impact on the environment.
1、What is the text mainly about?
A.The necessity of promoting energy efficiency.
B.The process of building green buildings.
C.The benefits and features of green buildings.
D.Green buil dings’ effects on the environment.
2、According to the text, green buildings refer to the buildings that . A.produce no waste
B.only use clean energy
C.are made of recycled materials
D.use energy and resources more efficiently
3、Which of the following statements is TRUE about green buildings?
A.They rely on fossil fuels and solar power for heat and electricity.
B.Small buildings are less efficient in energy use than larger ones.
C.The ecosystem has to be considered when building a green building.
D.They are difficult to maintain and thus need more operating costs.
4、Green roofs are used because .
A.they fit the surrounding environment well
B.they are cheaper than other kinds of roofs
C.they can keep natural water for use in everyday life
D.they can help to control the temperature in the building well
22.(8分)Many people wrongly think that cities don’t have farms and fruits and vegetables are only grown in the country. Believe it or not, there are more urban farms popping up in cities all over the world.
Alexandra Sullivan, a food systems researcher in New York, studies urban agriculture. Urban agriculture is another name for farming and gardening in a city environment. Ms. Sullivan studies everything from tiny gardens in empty lots between buildings to bigger fields that have been planted and grown. According to Ms. Sullivan, “Urban agriculture has existed since cities have, across the world.”
The number of humans living in urban areas, or cities, is increasing. The amount of people who wanted to gard en in urban areas is also rising. Ms. Sullivan says, “In small gardens, on rooftops and indoors, city residents grow fruits, vegetables, grains, and herbs, and raise animals to produce milk, eggs, honey, and meat. City residents use these foods as suppleme nts to food produced by rural agriculture.” Even though some people who live in urban areas grow crops, urban residents still need to rely on food grown in rural areas. This is because a city doesn’t have enough space to grow enough food for everyone living in it.
In New York City, urban farmers have come up with many different ways to grow their own produce, even though there isn’t a lot of room. For example, Brooklyn Grange is a farming operation that has two rooftop vegetable farms in New Y ork City. All together, the farms are made up of 2.5 acres of rooftop space. This makes Brooklyn Grange one of the largest rooftop farming operations in the world.
Brooklyn Grange grows all kinds of things. The farming company sells its vegetables to local residents and restaurants. And because the farms are on rooftops, they are specially adapted to their urban location. They use available space that is not needed for anything else. As more urban farmers find ways to grow food in cities, urban residents will be better able to get fresher materials for their meals.
1、Which of the following is Ms. Sullivan’s opinion about urban agriculture? A.Urban agriculture has developed recently.
B.Urban agriculture takes too much city space.
C.Urban agriculture has a history as long as cities.
D.Urban agriculture can take the place of rural agriculture.
2、For traditional agriculture, urban agriculture is a(n) ________.
A.model B.addition
C.competitor D.replacement
3、What can we learn about Brooklyn Grange in New York City from the text?
A.It has large farming areas.
B.It can only grow single products.
C.It produces enough food for citizens.
D.It makes use of rooftop space to grow vegetables.
4、What is the author’s opinion on the urban farms?
A.Critical. B.Positive.
C.Worried. D.Confused.
23.(8分)When he was young, Louis Armstrong was taking what was called “Creole jazz”, which was also called dance music, and combining it with trumpeter(小号手) Buddy Bolden, to create what would eventually become today’s jazz.
Armstrong accomplished this with almost no formal training. He received little training before he was placed in the New Orleans Colored Waif’s Home at the age of 12, after a run-in(小争执) with the police. The punishment turned out to be a mixed blessing, for he also had the opportunity to play in a real band.
While at the Waif’s, Armstrong also got the chance to hear some of the city’s finest musicians. Cornetist Freddie Keppard performed in a nearby club. So did trumpeter and bandleader King Joe Oliver, who took the boy under his wing and taught him how to read music and work on his playing technique.
When Oliver left for Chicago, Armstrong chose to stay in New Orleans and work with some of the other top musicians of the day. In Chicago, King Oliver offered him a place in his band in 1922. It became Armstrong’s biggest chal lenge yet — the band had no parts written for trumpet, so he was forced to listen to King Oliver and improvise(即兴创作).
Soon, Armstrong’s undeniable talent was getting noticed. Even classically trained musicians would come to hear the incredible sounds this young man created.
Lil Hardin, the band’s piano player and the future Mrs. Armstrong, explained that Oliver kept Armstrong in the second trumpet-chair so that Oliver would still be “King”. Hardin convinced him to leave the band.
Armstrong moved to New York City in 1924 to join Fletcher Henderson’s band and then flew solo. In 1925, Armstrong put together the Hot Five, expanding his popularity even more. Armstrong recorded his first composition, Cornet Chop Suey, one of the most copied jazz solos of all time. This monumental 1928 recording blends(混合) artistry, endurance and showmanship that has rarely, if ever, been matched in jazz.
1、What does the underlined word “this” refer to in the second paragraph?
A.To play dance music. B.To work with Buddy Bolden.
C.To play a jazz instrument well. D.To create modern jazz music.
2、Who taught Louis Armstrong how to play music in the early time?
A.Buddy Bolden. B.Lil Hardin.
C.King Joe Oliver. D.Cornetist Freddie Keppard.
3、Why did Louis Armstrong Leave King Ol iver’s band?
A.Because he wanted to get married in New York.
B.Because his talent could not develop completely.
C.Because he got a better opportunity in New York.
D.Because the man forced him to leave the band.
4、What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.It asks readers to know more about modern jazz.
B.It introduces one of the greatest jazz musicians.
C.It introduces the development of jazz.
D.It describes the importance of talent in playing jazz.
24.(8分)A few years ago, Darla Hoff painted a pumpkin face onto a round straw bale(捆)at A1 and Karen Goldman's farm in Idaho Palls to advertise her U-pick pumpkin field. While Darla has stopped growing pumpkins, the annual tradition of straw bale art lives on at the farm and has drawn friends and neighbors to participate in it. Past creations have included an owl, Minions, tractors and a teddy bear.
To make the tractors, A1 baled round straw bales in two different sizes smaller ones for the tractor's front tires and larger ones for the rear(尾部). Large square bales made up the bodies. Jerry Kienlen used his farming equipment to arrange the bales in the shape of two tractors. Then it was time to bring the tractors to life. Karen and her daughter. Lana Hedrick, secured some green paint, and A1 got some red paint. Darla's husband, James, sprayed the creation with a paint gun. For the finishing touches, Steven
donated two shiny exhaust stacks (排气管),and A1 and Karen donated two steering wheels from their farm parts.
The farm's annual straw bale art projects have now become a way for everyone to celebrate the end of another growing season. It's just something fun to do together after harvest. This neighborhood has always been close. Generations of these families have grown crops in this soil. Raised on the farms where they live now, they grew up together as their elders did before. A1 and Karen are truly super neighbors. Every year they also grow about two acres of corn to give away. Anyone can pick some, or A1 and Karen will even deliver. And during long Idaho winters, everyone gathers at the farm to enjoy fresh coffee and cookies.
This year's straw hale creation theme is Straw Wars. And all eyes will be on A1 and Karen's farm as their creation takes shape.
1、Why did Darla paint a pumpkin face onto a straw bale?
A.To recycle straw bales.
B.To please his neighbors.
C.To create a new tradition.
D.To make an advertisement.
2、What does the underlined phrase “the creation" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The straw bale tires.
B.The square straw bales.
C.The straw bale tractors.
D.The farming equipment.
3、What do local people think of the straw bale art show?
A.It needs something fun.
B.It’s a good way to celebrate harvest.
C.It makes A1 and Karen famous in the town.
D.It stands for the beginning of a new season.
4、What kind of neighbors are A1 and Karen according to Paragraph 3? A.Generous. B.Creative.
C.Funny. D.Determined.☞文章内容To make the tractors, Al baled round straw bales in two different sizes- smaller ones for the tractor's front tires and larger ones for the rear(尾部).得知他们都在制作
25.(10分)When somebody gets sick or is hurt in an accident, there are several
different ways that doctors can try to help them. One of these is to give medicine that fights the sickness or helps the sick person’s body to fight it. However, if some parts of a body are very sick or damaged, then doctors might need to remove them. Another way doctors can help is to grow new tissue to replace what is sick or damaged. This is called regenerative medicine (再生医学). Regenerative medicine sounds like something from a science fiction movie but it is not a new idea. Inside our bones, we have something called ‘marrow’, which makes our blood and keeps us healthy. Doctors have been giving sick people the ‘bone marrow’ from other healthy people for the last 30 or 40 years, and this is a kind of regenerative medicine.
Newer developments in regenerative medicine include growing new skin in a laboratory and using it to help people who have been hurt in fires or accidents. Another example of regenerative medicine is a technique developed from studying frogs and mice. When cells are old, like in adults, they can’t change what they do in our bodies. For example, a skin cell can’t change into an eye cell. But when cells are very young, they can become any cell type. These young cells are called stem cells, and doctors can use them to grow any type of tissue, such as skin, heart or eye. John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka won the 2012 Nobel Prize for their studies in this area.
Professor Fiona Watt, from the Cent re for Regenerative Medicine at King’s College London, believes that regenerative medicine is so exciting because many different kinds of experts need to work together. New bones may be printed by expert 3D printers, who need to work closely with university scientists and the surgeons who do the operations in hospitals.
We cannot yet grow new arms or legs for people, but the science fiction dream of regenerative medicine may be closer than we think. Perhaps in the future, doctors will be able to grow whole new bodies for us.
1、Why is ‘marrow’ in bones very important in regenerative medicine?
A.It can grow into new skin for those who have been hurt in fires.
B.It can be used to grow new tissue.
C.It makes blood for our body.
D.It has been used for 40 years.
2、Which of the following is right according to this passage?
A.Regenerative medicine is a new science in medicine.
B.Fiona Watt and Shinya Yamanaka won the 2012 Nobel Prize for medicine. C.Stem cells, very young cells, can be used to grow any type of tissue.
D.Doctors and scientists now cooperate to grow new skin for frogs and mice.
3、What’s the writer’s attitude to the development in regenerative medicine? A.Pessimistic. B.Optimistic.
C.Doubtful. D.Subjective.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Lessie,
Hearing that you will come to China as an exchange student, I want to express a warm welcome to you. I’m very glad that you wi sh to have a Chinese name. There is no
doubt that it will help you better fit in with the Chinese culture.
A Chinese name usually consists of two or three characters, which often contain some special meanings, expectations or blessings. However, unlike an English name, the family name of Chinese is usually put first and then a given name follows. In addition, I have come up with several Chinese names, which are added to the E-mail attachment.
I hope you will like one of them and have a good time in China.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
