The boat arrived at a small town, and Legree and his slaves (奴隶) got off. He put the women and the luggage on a wagon (马车), and chained the men to the back of it. So Tom and the other men walked all the way to the plantation, which was far from the river.
The wagon stopped in front of a house. It was large, but it looked sad, empty and uncomfortable; the glass of some windows was broken and there were bits of wood
and boxes on the ground. Two slaves, Sambo and Quimbo, were Legree’s two main helpers on the plantation, and they arrived with four ferocious-looking dogs.
“Don’t try to run away,” said Legree to Tom and the others, “or the dogs will follow you. ”
“Sambo”, said Legree, “take these new slaves down to the cabins. ”

Oliver set off in the direction of London. “No one will find me in London,” he thought. He walked for twenty miles, and then he lay down in a field and fell asleep. He walked for seven more days, begging for food and water. Then on the seventh day he walked slowly into a small town and sat down to rest. His feet were bleeding and he was covered in dirt. A boy saw him and came to talk to him.
“Hello, where have you been?” asked the boy.
The boy was about the same age as Oliver, but he was a strange-looking boy. He had a large hat and he wore a man’s coat which came nearly to his feet. He was just a dirty little boy but he acted and talked like an adult. “I’ve walked for seven days,” said Oliver. “I’m very tired and hungry.” “Well,” said the boy, “come with me and I’ll get you something to eat.”
The boy bought Oliver some food. Then, as Oliver ate hungrily, they talked.

Oliver looked around. They were in a large room. The walls and the ceiling were black with age and dirt. A man was cooking some food in a frying pan over a fire. The man had an ugly face and dirty red hair. There were beds on the floors. Four or five boys, about the same age as the Dodger, sat around a table.

When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand? These days, buying secondhand items is becoming more popular.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2024, the quality of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. So it’s a better choice to reuse old things.
People can even find some“extinct”(绝版的) items, or items that are no longer made. For example, some people like to buy vintage items, including clothes and accessories (配饰). These items often go back 30 years or even more. But as long as they’re in good condition, people can still use them.
Second-hand items connect people. In this way, they sometimes pass on history and stories. Here are two examples.
Zhao Kaiqi, 22, a college student, Harbin, Heilongjiang
I love buying books on Deja Vu, an online second-hand trading site. It’s a good choice for students like me. I can save a lot of money. It also brings me interesting
experiences that I don’t have when I buy new books. One time, I found a note in a second-hand book. Its previous (之前的) owner left the note, hoping that I would enjoy the book. It was heart-warming to read. I want to do something like that in the future.
Kate, 25, a writer, London, the UK
I am a big fan of vintage items. They are special. I like items from the 1950s and 1960s. Vintage items carry stories from the past. Once I bought a bracelet (手镯) with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason” inscribed on it. It made me wonder about ▲.
I think looking for vintage items is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, but whether you can find an item that fits you. It’s an interesting connection.

B. the material of the bracelet
C. the designer of the bracelet
D. the happiness of finding vintage items
( )45. Which of the following is TRUE?

六、范文:
Dear friends,
As we know, our city is working hard to win the title of China’s National Civilized City. So now it is a good opportunity for us to make our own contributions.
Firstly, more changes in our daily life, such as sorting out the rubbish and
traveling in a greener way, can be made to protect the environment. What’s more, to make our city a loving city, we are also supposed to help those in need by doing some voluntary work or raising donations. Last but not least, get along with others in an honest and friendly way. We’d better avoid talking about others’ privacy if we want to show our respect.
I strongly believe that we will make our city a more civilized and beautiful city with our joint efforts. All in all, it’s time to take action.

May 20, 2024 作文点评:这篇习作运用了“三步”法进行写作。

第一步开篇点题, 引出话题;
第二步从三个方面介绍“创文”的具体事项;第三步表达愿望。

文中such as, in a greener way, be made to do sth., by doing sth., last but not least, avoid doing sth., take action 等短语的运用, 使文章行文流畅的同时, 也体现了作者的基本功;I strongly believe that..., It’s time to do sth. 等句型的使用, 也丰富了文章的句式结构。

添彩点:文中画线部分为本文添彩点。
