Procedures
■Warming up by talking about things and people
Good morning, class. Look! W hat’s this in English? It’s a photo. What color is it? It’s black and white. What’s my name? M y name’s XXX. Is this my sister on my right? This is my sister. Where’s my b rother? Do I have an uncle? Do you like my photo? How much is this photo? It is ten yuan. When is my birthday? My birthday is May 4. Do you want to look at my photo? Can you see my pen in my photo? What time do I come to school every morning?
I come to school around seven thirty. What is my favorite subject at school? My favorite subject is English. Where’s my English teacher from? She is from America. Where’s my home? My home is in the east part of the city. Do you like my photo? Why do you like it? I

1a Looking and matching
Look at the picture on page 41 in your book. What can you see in the picture? Yes, there are many people in the subway.
Read after me these three groups of words.
Now please look at the picture and match the words with the people in the picture. Write each letter next to a numbered word. You can use some letters more than once.
1b Listening and filling
Now let’s go on to listen to a conversation between Amy and her friend. Who do they look for? Look at the picture and find the boy Amy is talking about. I’ll play the recording twice. Please listen carefully and fill in the blanks in the speech babbles.

Procedures
■Warming up by studying the grammar focus
Hello, what do I look like? Am I tall? Am I strong? Now go to page 42. Let’s read and translate the questions and answers into Chinese.
2a Listening and circling
We are going to listen to three conversations. People in the conversations are talking about their friends. Listen carefully and circle “is” or “has”.
2b Listening and filling
Look at the sample answers in the chart in 2b. David is tall and he has curly hair. Listen to the recording again. This time please write down the other description words about David, Sally and Pete.
Now go to page 86 to read the conversations. While reading, try to find all the sentences with “look like ”where and words for describing people. . And also cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study
all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions. That’s grammar study, indeed.
Now read the conversations again to turn them into a text.
2c Pairing and speaking
Just now we heard something about David, Sally and Pete, and got to know what they look like. Look at the picture of a girl on page 42. She is a new friend of Lily ’s. She is lovely, isn ’t she? Now look at the dialogue in the box and complete the dialogue with words to describe her look.
Let’s invite some pairs to act out the dialogue to the class.
Now work in pairs to describe your friend.
Period 3: Reading and Speaking (Page 43)

Procedures
■Warming up by making a list of adjective words used for description
Hello, class. What do I look like? Can you make a list of adjective words and make some sentences to describe me? Have a try.
3a Reading and matching
Now look at the 4 pictures in 3a. What does each of them look like?
Now go on to read the four paragraphs. Match them with the pictures.
While reading try to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions. That’s grammar study, indeed.

Now read the text again and copy all the useful expressions in your notebook.
Now read the texts again to turn them into a conversation.
3b Pairing and speaking
Let’s look at the pictures in 3b. What does each of the people look like?
Make conversations in pairs, please. Later, I’ll ask several pairs to present their dialogues to the class.
4 Game ——Mystery Student
Now let’s play a game: Mystery Student. Please describe someone in the class. Let others guess who he /she is.

■Warming up by looking and saying
In our last class, we learned how to describe people’s appearance. Look at these pictures. What does the girl look like? Yes, she has long black hair, and she’s beautiful. She wears a nice cap. She is of medium height.
The man in the other picture is well known to you. He’s Zhao Benshan. He has short black hair and he is of medium build. He is now heavy. Good! He smiles at you!
Now let’s go on to look and match.
1a Looking and match
Now look at the pictures and read the words aloud. Then ask and answer about the people’s looks in each picture.
OK. Now please match the words with one of the pictures. Write the letters next to the picture. (Keys: 1. d 2 .b 3.c 4.a)
1b Reading and making sentences
Please write down the descriptions about the pictures in 1a.
The person in Picture a has short blonde hair. The person in Picture b is bald with glasses. The person in Picture c has short curly black hair. The person in Picture d has a beard.
Well done!
Now look at the incomplete sentences in 1b and read the completed sample sentence aloud. Please work alone or in pairs to write the names of a famous person. Then I’ll ask some students to read the sentences completed. You can have your own answers.
2a Listening and writing
Now we are going to hear a conversation between Maria and Danny. They are talking about the actors on TV. Look at the pictures in 2a. Try to describe their looks first in pairs.
OK. Now listen to the tape carefully and write down Johnny Dean’s and Tina Brown’s job. (Keys: See 2b.)

Procedures
■Warming up by looking and saying
Hello, class. Look at this picture. Do you know who it is? It is Johnny Dean. What is he? He is a pop singer. What does he look like? What are his famous songs? To know more about him, go to page 45.
3a Reading and filling
The two pictures on page 45 are of the same person in different periods.
Now read the magazine article about the pictures and fill in the blanks in the chart. Under “Before” write words that describe Johnny before was changed. Under “Now” write words that describe Johnny after he was changed.
Now go on to page the text again. While reading, try to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions. That’s grammar study, indeed.
OK, now please read aloud the article as the recorder goes. When you read, you should pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. Try to imitate the native reader.

3b Looking and filling
Please look at the 2 pictures in 3b. The girl in the pictures is Gloria Green. The passage tells us how Gloria’s look has changed. Read the article individually and fill in the chart.
Please read the article again and change it into a dialogue in pairs.
3c Thinking and writing
Now write a short description of one of your family members, using the words and phrases learned in this unit. Then let’s read some of the completed descriptions to the class.

1 Checking the words
Please open your book at page 46 and look at part 1.
Check all the words you know and find out the meanings of any words you don’t know. Please divide the words into 3 groups.
Verbs: wear
Nouns:short hair, curly hair, long hair, brown hair, straight hair, blonde hair, medium height, medium build, beard, glasses
Adjectives: short, tall, heavy, thin
2 Writing new words
Now write five new words in your notebook and share your lists with other students.
3 Saying and writing
Look at the picture in P art 3 and talk about the 5 people’s looks with your partner. Then work alone and write down the answers to the 5 questions on their books.。
