They were young and happy boys and girls, but their lives came to a tragic early end. On Sept. 26, six students died and 31 were injured in a stampede(踩踏) at Mingtong Primary School in Kunming, Yunnan.
The accident happened when a two-metre long cotton cushion(垫子) for gym class fell over and blocked a stairway hall. Several children were covered by it and their classmates rushed out and stepped on them without realizing.
This is not the first tragedy in recent times. Last year, four children died in a stampede at a school in Xiangyang, Hubei, when pupils left their dormitory on the fourth floor and tried to get out. The ground floor gate was closed, resulting in the crush.
According to a survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Center, about 1,600 elementary and middle school students in China were killed every year in accidents. The main causes come from stampedes, earthquakes, fires and sports injuries.
A stampede is possible anywhere. The larger a crowd, the more likely a stampede becomes. On March 31, the National Day of Education on the Safety of primary and Middle School Students, the Ministry of Education gave out instructions: If students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs.

Too many people want to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendship don't last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feeling. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and helping with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity, and understanding.

For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I'm worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice?
Sue, Miami Posted,

It's a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don't be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it's common in the USA.

Americans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they
do.
Kathryn, New York Posted,

In Korea and Japan, it's the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don't take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!
Lee, Korea Posted,

Many Americans are very informal(非正式的) at home. One time I went to an American business partner's home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man's wife and children.
Andrew, Washington Posted,

I agree with Lee. You probably won't speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. But you'd better not question about age.

Stranger Safety Tips for Children
Your feelings tell you that you are safe with some people like your mom or dad, brothers or sisters; your grandparents; teachers at school.
People that you do not know very well can mean danger. You may meet these people anywhere, in the streets, stores, theaters, or on the playgrounds. These people are strangers. Simply, a stranger is someone that you do not know.
Not all strangers are bad, but it is very difficult to tell bad strangers from good strangers. Strangers can come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages. Even a teenager could be considered a stranger to you.
If a "stranger" comes towards you, you should:
● Never talk to a stranger.
● Never go near a stranger.
● Never accept gifts or rides from a stranger.
● Never go anywhere with a stranger.
Report strangers to your parents, teachers, bus drivers, or an adult that you know well.
The main rule to remember: "Stay away from strangers".
When you are alone at home, always lock the door. Do not answer the door if someone knocks. Never let strangers into the house. If the telephone rings, answer it. Do not tell anyone that you are alone. You can tell them your parent cannot come to the phone right now. Ask who is calling, and offer to take a message.

Do you need to "edit your friends"? Is your mobile phone directory full of phone numbers of people you don't really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real friends? Do you say yes to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, then perhaps you need to "edit your friends".
Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school. The result is that we don't have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier, it becomes more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.
Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary possessions(物品). It said you should ask yourself about each thing you have: Is it useful? Do I really like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is no to any one of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we should ask similar questions about our friends.
What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it's an old friend. Somebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now, you have very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a
meeting, think "Do I really want to see this person?", and if the answer is no, say no, and make an excuse. That way you'll have more time to spend with your real friends.
1. People need to edit their friends when .
A. they have moved to a different area
B. they have no time with their real friends
C. some of their friends don't talk very much
D. their friends are people from work or school
2. People don't need to edit their .
A. real friends
B. young friends
C. old friends
D. new friends
3. What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. We should often throw some possessions.
B. Most of our friends are not necessary at all.
C. We shouldn't treat our friends as possessions.
D. We should ask ourselves who our real friends are.

When people go to England, they must learn something about transportation there.
In England, cars, buses and bikes must keep to the left side of the street. If a person wishes to cross a street, he must stop and either look at the traffic lights or look both ways down the street. And instead of looking left first, as we do in China, they look right first.
To get about in London, visitors should learn to use buses and the subways. First of all they must know which direction (方向) they are going to and which bus and which subway they must take. At the bus stop they wait for buses to come. As soon as they get on the bus, they must pay for their tickets.

CCTV reported that every year Chinese people throw away a lot of food which can feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Programme, there were 900 million hungry people all over the world in 2013. About six million children die of hunger every year.
So think about it. We should say no to people who waste food every day. An old saying goes, "Every grain on the plate comes from hard work." It tells us everybody must save food.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Jiangsu, once lost her job because she took some leftover(剩余的) food home for her son. But many people were by her side and criticized(批评) the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily life to stop wasting food? We can do many things to prevent it from happening. Here are some tips:
● Don't order too much food in a restaurant. Only order as much as you can eat. If you can't eat all the food you order, take the rest of it home.

Wang Xu, 44, is from Henan, and Liu Gang, 29, is from Heilongjiang. They are among the millions of farmers who have gone to the cities to work.

They have beautiful houses and they will put flowers in their houses. If I can grow good flowers here, I can make money, too." So he did. And soon his piece of ground was covered with beautiful flowers. Later he was able to buy more fields until he owned all the ground near the river.
