Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. "It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone." Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, it is challenging with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. "The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person," said the 30-year-old man.
Richardson describes traveling alone like "a shot in the arm", which "makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything". He said, "The feeling of having overcome something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside t hat nothing is impossible if you try."
The great 19th century explorer Jhon Muir once said, "Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness."

A. you have to make things on your own

A. He started traveling alone at an early age.
B. He was once shot in the arm.
C. He used to work as a salesman.
D. His website inspires others a lot.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Travel Abroad

Parents do need to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money is earned. Still, many child-development experts agree that tying a child’s pocket money to chores(琐事)can be a slippery slope. Here’s why.
Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and pocket money totally separate. “Pocket money is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities---that’s a whole different thing.” says Walton.
Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘well, there goes your pocket money.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We are a team. We are a family. We’ve got to have them done.’”
Besides, by paying children for chores with pocket money, you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it.
There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for chores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that it’s a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs
that are outside their normal set of chores, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to clean out the garage—especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even develop an entrepreneurial(企业家)spirit to think outside of the box to earn money.
For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the pocket money isn’t tied to household chores, notes that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Depending on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for their own toys of snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their pocket money towards savings.
“I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9 “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson on learn at 9 years old.
No matter which pocket money route you take in parenthood, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money.
28. According to Susie Walton, if kids don’t do chores, parents should _______.
A. teach them the entrepreneurial spirit
B. talk to them about family responsibilities
C. give them a smaller pocket money than usual
D. order them to give reasonable explanation
29. In Paragraph 6, “a straight allowance” probably means “________”.
A. money given by charity organizations
B. money earned by doing part-time jobs
C. money earned by doing everyday household chores
D. money given by parents and not dependent on chores
30. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action?
A. Worried
B. Doubtful
C. supportive
D. Unfavorable
31. The text is mainly about _________.
A. the importance of kids doing chores
B. whether parents should pay kids for chores
C. whether it is good or bad to give kids pocket money
D. whether parents should give kids regular pocket money
D
Teaching can be one of the most satisfying jobs in the United States. Yet many American teachers say they feel overworked, undervalued, and underpaid. This has led to what education experts call ‘teacher burnout,’ a feeling of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion.
In all, nearly 50 percent of American teachers leave the profession before their fifth year. That information comes from a 2010 study by the advisory service McKinsey & Company.
And, a 2016 study from Penn State University found that 46 percent of teachers report high daily stress. Teachers say the stress affects their sleep, health, teaching performance, and quality of life. The study identified mindfulness training as one promising solution for improving teacher well-being.
The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California —Berkeley studies the science and practice of well-being. It defines mi ndfulness as keeping “a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment.”
A person can reach this emotional state by spending time in quiet thought, without judging these thoughts and feelings. A number of people also meditate —they take slow, deep breaths to become calm.
Many organizations around the country have designed mindfulness training programs for schools. Some of them are designed for teachers. The programs seek to reduce teacher stress while helping them be more effective in the classroom.
Maureen Naughton is a seventh grade science teacher at a public middle school in the Bronx section of New York City. As a highly active teacher, Naughton would sometimes forget to take time to herself. But after the programs she shared the methods such as mindful walking and mindful eating — ways of enjoying those activities fully instead of being distracted by worries or responsibilities.
Naughton also said the deep breathing methods help her to maintain calm when faced with the stress of trying to “meet everyone’s needs.”
32. What does ‘teacher burnout’ in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. A condition of happiness and sorrow
B. A situation of physical
exercise
C. A feeling of mental, physical, and emotional tiredness
D. A feeling of mental, physical, and emotional relaxation
33. What do we know from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Nearly half of American teachers leave the profession before their tenth year.
B. A 2010 stud y was conducted by a college.
C. Forty-six percent o f teachers report high daily stress in last year’s study.
D. Daily stress affects their sleep, health, teaching performance, and quality of teaching.
34. What do mindfulness training programs designed for teachers try to do?
A. They try to make teachers take slow, deep breaths to become calm
B. They try to reduce teacher stress to help teachers be more effective when teaching
C. They try to make teachers enjoy those activities fully
D. They try to make teachers spend time in quiet thought, without judging these thoughts and
feelings
35. What can we infer from Naughton`s words?
A. The deep breathing methods are a good way to let her keep calm when faced with stress.
B. The deep breathing methods help her to maintain calm when faced with the stress of
try ing to “meet everyone’s needs.”
C. Don’t be distracted by worries or possibilities.
D. Enjoy all kinds of activities carefully.
