My First Volunteer Experience
Last summer, I had the most amazing experience volunteering at the local animal shelter. It all started when my mom saw a flyer at the grocery store saying the shelter needed helpers to take care of the dogs and cats. She asked me if I wanted to volunteer there over the summer break, and I said yes right away! I love animals so much, and I had never volunteered before, so I was really excited.
On my first day, I was pretty nervous. The shelter seemed so big, with lots of barking dogs and meowing cats. But the staff members were really nice. A lady named Mrs. Garcia showed me around and explained all the different jobs volunteers could do. We started in the dog kennels, where I got to help feed the dogs their breakfast. I carefully followed the instructions on how much food to give each one based on their size. Some were pretty energetic and jumped up towards the food, while others were more shy. I tried to stay calm so I wouldn't scare them.
After feeding time, it was playtime! Mrs. Garcia took me out to the dog run area, which had a fenced-in yard for the dogs to exercise. My job was to play fetch and give them attention and belly rubs. At first the dogs were a bit rambunctious, running around like crazy. But once I sat down, a few came over and let me pet them. A fluffy golden retriever named Buddy was especially friendly - he rolled onto his back right away so I could rub his belly. I spent a long time just sitting there petting Buddy while he happily wagged his tail. Getting dog kisses from him was the best!
In the afternoon, we moved over to the cat areas. I got to go into the room where the cats could roam around and play. There were lots of fun cat toys like feather wands and laser pointers that I got to use. The cats loved chasing after the toys! A little orange tabby kitten named Pumpkin was particularly energetic. She would leap up in the air trying to catch the feather wand. When she finally did, she would kick it with her hind legs, acting all feisty. Pumpkin made me laugh so hard!
Another one of my jobs with the cats was cleaning out their litter boxes. I have to admit, that part wasn't too fun and it smelled pretty bad. But it was an important chore to keep the cat areas clean. I was proud of myself for sticking with it and doing
my best. After all, caring for animals means taking care of the not-so-glamorous stuff too.
By the end of that first day, I was exhausted from all the walking around, bending over, and playing with the animals. My arms were sore from holding the dogs' leashes when we took them out for bathroom breaks. But it was totally worth it to spend time with all those cute furry friends.
Over the rest of the summer, I went back to the shelter twice a week. With the dogs, my favorite activity was taking them for walks around the outdoor trail behind the building. I loved seeing how excited they got when I came into the kennel area ready to walk them. Their little tail wags and doggy dances always melted my heart. On the walks, I practiced giving them commands like "sit", "stay", and "heel" so they could work on their training. Not all of them were great at listening, but I could tell they really enjoyed the outdoor time and attention.
With the cats, I got to do even more fun things as I learned the ropes. Sometimes I went into the small rooms and just sat on the floor, letting the cats come up and snuggle with me if they wanted. Reading out loud to them was surprisingly relaxing and sweet. One time, I even got to bottle feed some tiny orphaned kittens who didn't have a mom. It was a little tricky because they
squirmed around so much, but I felt so proud to help take care of them.
The hardest part of volunteering was when animals got adopted and left the shelter. On one hand, I was overjoyed for them to go to their new forever homes after seeing how loving and sweet they could be. But I also felt sad to see them go, especially if they were ones I had grown close to over the weeks. Like Pumpkin the feisty kitten - I cried bitter tears the day a nice family took her home. Or Rusty, an older dog with the grayest muzzle who loved cuddling during our reading times. Saying goodbye was incredibly difficult, but I knew they were off to live their best lives.
By the end of the summer, I had made so many fond memories at the shelter. I felt a huge sense of accomplishment, knowing I had helped provide care, food, exercise, and love for all those deserving animals as they awaited adoption into permanent homes. It made me realize how fulfilling it can be to volunteer and give back to your community, even as a kid. I am forever grateful to the staff there who taught me so much about animal care and welfare.
Volunteering at the animal shelter was honestly one of the highlights of my entire childhood. The snuggles, playtimes, and
animal kisses brought me such pure joy. Yes, there was some hard work involved like the litter boxes and early morning feedings. But witnessing those cute furry faces brighten up when I arrived made every minute worth it. I created lasting bonds and memories with the most adorable dogs and cats. It's an experience I will cherish forever, and I know it helped me grow into an even bigger animal lover than I already was. I can't wait to do it again next summer!

My First Volunteer Experience
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I just had the most amazing experience volunteering and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
It all started a few weeks ago when my teacher, Mrs. Thompson, told our class that we would be doing a volunteer project to help out at a local animal shelter. I love animals so much, so I was really excited! Mrs. Thompson said we'd be playing with the cats and dogs, brushing them, walking them, and helping to take care of them.
When the day finally came, we all piled onto the big yellow school bus bright and early. The animal shelter wasn't too far
away, maybe a 15 minute drive. As we got closer, I could feel my heart racing with anticipation. I just couldn't wait to meet all the furry friends!
When we arrived, a few of the workers came out to greet us. They seemed really nice and welcomed us warmly. The first thing I noticed was the sound of all the barking dogs! It was pretty loud but also kind of fun and exciting. The worker named Karen told us we'd start off in the cat area first.
We went into this big room that had tons of cats roaming around. There were little climbers and toys everywhere for them. Karen showed us how to carefully approach the cats and pet them gently. She also taught us the right way to pick them up under their front legs. I was a little nervous to pick one up at first, but then this orange tabby cat came right up to me and let me hold him. He was so soft and cuddly!
After some playtime with the cats, it was time to go see the dogs. This time the barking was even louder! The worker John told us we'd get to take some of the calmer dogs for walks around the outdoor trail area. I was paired up with this cute little beagle mix named Riley. As soon as I attached her leash, she was ready to go! We walked around the trail and I practiced giving her little treats when she behaved well.
During our lunch break, the workers told us all about how the shelter takes in stray, abandoned, or surrendered pets. They have volunteers like us come help out, but they also need lots of donations of food, toys, and supplies. They also need families to foster or adopt the animals that don't have homes. Hearing about all the pets that need help made me feel really sad but also grateful that I could do a little bit to help them.
After lunch, we got to go back and spend more time with the animals. I played fetch with some of the dogs and used a special brush to groom a few of the long-haired cats. My favorite was this big fluffy main coon cat named Smokey. He loved getting brushed and would roll over for belly rubs!
By the end of the day, I was exhausted from all the playing and walking. But I also felt so happy and proud that I got to help take care of those sweet animals, even if just for a few hours. I gave lots of hugs and kisses goodbye to my new furry friends.
On the bus ride back to school, Mrs. Thompson had us all go around and share our favorite part of the day. So many of my classmates talked about feeling happy and wanting to do more volunteering. When it was my turn, I told everyone how great it felt to make a difference, even if it was just a small one. I knew
those animals felt loved and cared for because of us visiting them that day.
After that experience, I decided that I really want to do more volunteering and more to help animals. My mom and I are actually going to start fostering a dog soon until we can find it a forever home. I'm going to take such good care of that pup!
I also decided that when I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian so I can help animals every single day. Or maybe I'll work at an amazing place like that shelter. Either way, I know I want my life to be about taking care of animals and making sure they feel safe, healthy, and loved.
This volunteer day might have just been one afternoon, but it made a huge impact on me. Not only did I get to have fun playing with the cats and dogs, but I also learned about being compassionate and using my time to help others (or other animals!). I can't wait for my next opportunity to volunteer again. Hopefully I've inspired you to want to volunteer too! Just imagine all those pets with their tails wagging, so happy to have you giving them some love and attention. That's what it's all about!

My First Volunteer Experience
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I just had the most amazing experience volunteering for the first time and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
It all started a few months ago when my teacher, Mrs. Robinson, told our class that we would be doing a volunteer project to help out at a local animal shelter. I was so excited because I just love animals of all kinds - dogs, cats, bunnies, you name it! My family hasn't been able to have a pet since my little brother Timmy is allergic, so I don't get to be around animals as much as I'd like.
Mrs. Robinson said we'd be splitting into small groups and each group would visit the shelter one Saturday to help feed the animals, clean their cages or kennels, and most importantly, play with them and give them some love and attention. She explained that animal shelters do such great work taking care of lost pets or animals who don't have homes, but they rely a lot on volunteers to help out.
When the day finally came for my group's turn to go volunteer, I could barely sleep the night before from excitement! We met at the school bright and early on Saturday morning to take the bus over to the shelter. There were five other kids in my
group - my friends Emma and Zack, plus three other classmates named Ava, Jayden, and Luis.
As soon as we arrived at the shelter, a friendly worker named Kelly gave us instructions and split us into two teams - a dog team and a cat team. I was on the dog team with Emma and Luis. We got unified dog volunteer t-shirts and baseball caps to wear, which was so cool! Kelly said wearing them would help the animals feel more comfortable around us since we'd have a familiar uniform and scent.
First up, we had to help get the dog kennels all clean and fresh. I have to admit, some of them were pretty stinky and messy! But we worked together as a team to scoop out the old bedding and waste, then we sprayed and wiped down all the kennel surfaces. Seeing the dogs wag their tails at us while we worked made the yucky job worth it. Next, we filled up fresh water bowls and food dishes for all the pups. They were so happy at mealtimes, I could tell they were really hungry!
After all that work was done, it was finally time for the fun part - playing with the dogs! Luis and I took two of the smaller ones out to a fenced-in outdoor run area first. Their names were Buddy and Daisy. At first they were a little shy around us, but after a few minutes of gently petting them and giving them
treats, they started to warm up. Soon they were running around, playing chase with us, and even letting us rub their bellies. Buddy loved to play fetch and Daisy just wanted to snuggle up in our laps. I didn't want that hour to end!
Next, Emma and I took a couple bigger dogs for a walk around the shelter's trails. I was a little nervous handling such big dogs on the leash at first, but Emma had done this before and showed me what to do. My dog's name was Zeus - he was an older German Shepherd who just loved to sniff everything! Emma's dog was a black lab mix named Luna who was very energetic and loved to run and jump. We had to be very careful with Zeus since his doggy manners weren't the best, but Luna was a model pooch the whole time. I wished I could have taken them both home with me!
After our group finished with the dogs, we switched over to help Zack, Ava and Jayden's cat team for a while. We got to go into the cat room where all the kitties stayed in fancy multi-level cat condos. It was so much fun playing with the laser pointer and watching them jump and climb all over trying to catch it! We also brushed some of the cats and gave them treats. There were some really cute kittens too that just wanted to snuggle up and nap in our laps. I definitely wanted to take one of those home!
When our volunteer shift was over, I was honestly kind of sad to leave. We all had such an amazing time hanging out with the animals. Kelly told us the shelter gets a lot of their pets adopted when kids come and volunteer because we played with the animals so much they started showing their friendlier, lovable sides that families look for when adopting. She said we did a great job!
On the bus ride back to the school, my group was still buzzing with excitement about the day. We all agreed we wanted to come back again soon. Zack's mom had actually just been saying they were thinking of getting a cat, so he was crossing his fingers one of the kittens would still be there next time! Even though it was hard work at times, getting to play with the dogs and cats definitely made it worth it.
Emma put it really well when she said volunteering at the shelter was fun because "you get cuddles and you get to feel like you're helping out." I definitely felt that way! I hope every kid gets the chance to do an awesome volunteer project like this one day. Not only was it tons of fun, but it felt so good to spend time with those lovable animals and make their day a little brighter. I can't wait for my next volunteer experience!。
