13、I remembered Julie coming to the front of the classroom after class one autumn day in September 193. While most of the other students hurriedly left to enjoy the pleasant weather or to relax at the student union, Julie remained to ask me questions about the next week’s exam. She had clearly already done some serious studying.
Julie never made it to the exam. The day after our conversation, she was hit by a large truck as she rode a bike through a crossroads. I was sad to hear that Julie lay unconscious (昏迷的) in a hospital across town from our university. Nurses silently came and went from Julie’s room. Her parents stood nearby quietly. Then the doctor entered the room and said to Julie’s parents and two brothers, “Your Julie has only a few hours to live.” He continued to ask, “Would you think about donating some of Julie’s organs (器官)?”
At the same time in a neighboring city, a woman called Mary was trying to see better in her small living room. Her eyes followed every movement of her lively two-year-old baby. This mother was storing up memories when she could no longer see her child. Several cities away, a young father called John was reading to his two sons in the hospital. However, he was told to have only weeks to live. His only hope was a kidney transplant (肾脏移植).
The two parents looked at each other, the doctor could see tears in their eyes. “Y es. Julie had once said she wanted to
donate her organs in the event of her death. Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would like to give in death.”
Within twenty-four hours, Mary was told that she would receive one of Julie’s eyes, and John was told to start preparing for a kidney transplant. Julie’s other organs would give life to other waiting patients.
“Julie died right after her twentieth birthday. Nothing could possibly be as heartbreaking as the death of your child,” says Julie’s mother. She continues, “But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing that in her death, she gave the gift of life and sight to others iscomforting to us. ”

Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings, such as battles lost and won, kings or rulers (统治者) overthrown (推翻) or killed, took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by words of mouth. Today we can read in our newspapers of important things that happen in faraway countries at the same time.
Besides giving news from all over the world, newspapers tell us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, as well as radio, television and film guides. There are also book reviews, stories, and of course, advertisements (广告). There are all kinds of advertisements. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space (广告版面), but it is worth the money because news of what they make in factories goes into almost every home in the country. For those who make newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit (利润).

16、For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the word “fashionable” in the same way: “She was wearing a fashionable coat. His shirt was
really a fashionable colour.”
But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in
f ilms and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs… and in languages.
Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.
Today fashions change quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspapers, radios, telephones and televisions send information from one country to another in a few hours.

18、Searching for parking spaces has long been a headache for many office workers in many big cities of China, especially for those working in central business districts. Parking near their companies for five days a week could cost them a lot of money. At the same time, even with prices for parking lots in residential areas(居民区) rising, most of their spaces remain idle during workdays. Now a new form of sharing economy has appeared in China—the shared parking space. It has become a huge market in some big cities.
In Qingdao, a coastal(海岸的) city in Shangdong, up to 10,000 personal parking spaces have been turned into shared ones with the help of “Airparking”, an online shared parking platform developed by a network company from Guangzhou.
Through a special app, users can either share or order a parking place. Owners who have idle parking spaces can share some information, including the parking position, license number and time limit(限制) on the platform. With the information, users can easily find the nearest place to park. The average (平均的) parking cost for shared parking is 4 yuan each hour, almost the same as the service cost in traditional parking spaces.
Qingdao is one of the Chinese cities that encourage shared parking. Some other big cites, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hefei, have also begun to try this idea. The Shanghai government, for example, has set up more than
