New research has shown that loneliness may affect ants to a greater extent than many other living creatures.
It has long been known that loneliness can lead to a shorter life. In humans, it has even been found to be a driver of high blood pressure, sleep disorder, and depression that’s independent of factors like age, race, gender, weight and economic status.
However, loneliness has never been identified as a factor that can cut human lifespan by more than a small part of the average. Ants, on the other hand, appear to be far more sensitive to this stress, with loneliness leading to a surprising 91 percent reduction in lifespan.
That’s at least according to a study that details how “lonely” ants only live up to six days on average. Ants living in a community, on the other hand, were found to live up to about 66 days.
In a series of experiments where ants were picked from their colonies (群体) and separated, they were found to continuously walk without rest, consuming far more energy than they could ever.
The reason for the behavior is that an isolated ant is simple trying to get back to its colony at all costs, and doesn’t know what to do without its nest mates. After all, many entomologists (昆虫学家) would argue that an ant colony is far more a single living entity (实体) than its members.
If you were to take a single part from a clock, it would simply move aimlessly as well, running without a purpose. However, while there is a difference between aimlessness and loneliness, the researchers found that the latter affects lonely ants more directly.
The study indicated that ants can’t even eat alone, as they normally collect some of the food they gather in the field in a specialized organ called a crop. This crop is normally shared with other ants back at a nest, but as for a single ant, it simply just sits there, undigested and useless.
4. How does loneliness influence a person?
A. It can make him very tired of himself.
B. It can leave him in conflict with others.
C. It can lead to him being very independent.
D. It can cause him to suffer from poor health
5. What can be learned from the experiments?
A. Most ants can live about 6 days on average.
B. Lonely ants can become very restless.
C. Human beings are similar to ants in some way.
D. Lonely ants seem to be violent and impatient.
6. Why does an isolated ant walk non-stop?
A. It attempts to return to its colony.
B. It wants to attract other ants to form a colony.
C. It hopes to make signals to its mates.
D. It has to find more food to survive.
7. The author mentioned a clock in the passage_________.
A. to show ants have a biological clock in the head.
B. to prove ants are a well-regulated community.
C. to stress ants are really highly social animals.
D. to compare aimlessness with loneliness.

There are 195 countries in the world today but almost none of them have purple on their national flag. So what’s wrong with purple? It’s such a popular color1 today. Why would no country use it in their flag? The answer is really quite simple. Purple was just for too expensive.
The color1 purple has been associated with royalty power and wealth for centuries. Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple’s high status comes from the rarity and cost of the dye (染料)originally used to produce it. Fabric traders got the dye from a small sea snail (海螺)that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean. More than 10,000 snails were needed to create just one gram of purple; not to mention a lot of work went into producing the dye, which made purple dye so expensive.
Since only wealthy rulers could afford to buy and wear the color1 , it became associated with the royal family. Sometimes, however, the dye was too expensive even for royalty. Third century Roman Emperor Aurelio famously wouldn’t allow his wife to buy a scarf made from purple silk because it cost three times its weight in gold. A single pound of dye cost three pounds of gold, which equals 56,000 dollars today. Therefore, even the richest countries couldn’t spend that much having purple on their flags.
The dye became more accessible to lower-class about a century and a half ago. In 1856, 18-year-old English
chemist William Henry Perkin accidentally created a man-made purple compound (化合物)while attemptingto produce an anti-malaria drug. He noticed that the compound could be used to dye fabrics, so he patented the dye, manufactured it and got rich. Purple dye was then mass-produced so everybody could afford it.
Till now, a handful of new national flags have been designed and a few of them have chosen to use purple in their flag. So don’t be making any bets just yet.
8. Why was color1 purple expensive in the past?
A. Because only royal families were allowed to wear purple.
B. Because it took a long time to get purple dye from gold.
C. Because purple was worth as much as its weight in gold.
D. Because purple dye used to be rare and hard to produce.
9. Why did Roman Emperor Aurelio forbid his wife to buy a purple scarf?
A. Because of poor quality.
B. Because of long tradition.
C. Because of bad taste.
D. Because of high price.
10. What is purple's situation now?
A. Purple has been widely used on national flags.
B. Purple dye is now affordable to ordinary people.
C. Royal family stop using purple because it’s toocommon.
D. Fewer snails are used to produce purple dye than before.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. No Purple Flags?
B. Purple vs Gold
C. How to Produce Purple Dye?
D. The Birth of Purple Color

Many of us were delighted to learn that a high school senior Kwasi Enin was accepted to all eight Ivy League universities. To our surprise, he wasn't excited as expected, but appeared extra calm. He announced that he would revisit the universities to find the best suitable in music or medicine. He also wanted to compare their financial aid packages.
Kwasi's success story is rare, but his reaction is not. After the admission letters arrive at home, students have 30 days to really think about what kind of school would help them grow as a person, which school would best prepare them for the future, and at which school they would be happiest. But how to answer the questions about which school is the best suitable university? Some young people are attracted to large universities with great school spirit and a list of offerings. But besides those advantages, many of these universities focus on graduate work and research, with undergraduates taught mostly by part-time instructors. Others are attracted to smaller boarding schools with discussion-based classes. But some of these schools will have much limitation for students who want a high-energy city life experience.
Many students today seem to think they should pick the university where they will get the diploma that will help them get the most highly paid job. This is a sad misunderstanding of what a college education should provide.
A good college education should prepare them to overcome any difficulty andthrivein society. A. He was from a very poor family.
B. He would choose the top university.

13. What can you infer from paragraph 2?
A. Few students can be admitted to university.

C. Top universities are the first choice for most students.
D. American students can afford their university by themselves.
14. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 4?
A. Fail
B. Succeed
C. Research
D. Work
15. What should the best university be like according to the text?
A. Very large and have good instructors.
B. Small boarding schools with discussion-based classes.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
续写的词数应为150左右。
I’m going to tell you a story. It’s a tale about love, heartbreak and great shame. And it’s my story. This is a story I’ve told every February since I started teaching in 1999. Its power lies, I think, in how it changes the way my students see me. Their super teacher is gone temporarily. Left behind is an 11-year-old girl whose feelings are hurt — and each of my students is very angry about the cruelty of the one who did the mean thing.
In my sixth grade, I fell madly in love. His name was David. He was tall, cute, kind of a bad boy — which I found attractive. He had no interest in me at all, but I wrote down his name all over my diary: xx loves xx in giant hearts.
So it was Valentine’s Day, elementary school style - construction paper mailboxes. Someone’s mom brought in cupcakes. Our parents bought us those variety-pack cards to send to everyone in class, with words like “Be My Honey” or “My Darling, Happy Valentine’s Day.”
It was party day. I spilled my cards onto my desk, and in many small envelopes, I saw a large one, shining like diamonds. My mind raced: "Wow-someone likes me enough to buy me this giant card. Who could it be from?” With trembling hands I tore open the envelope and drew out a sparkly image of a queen seated on her throne (宝座). The heading read, “To a Queen of a Valentine.” I was overcome with excitement. Slowly, I turned the card over, and at the bottom I saw the signature and almost fainted: David. It was all too perfect to be real. Then my eyes traveled up to the writing above his signature. In large, uneven (参差不齐的) letters, he had written me a special message.
Paragraph 1:
It read, “To the Ugliest Girl in Our Class.”, and I completely froze, tears rolling down my face.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2:
It was Valentine’s Day again and I held a party for my students, a party that celebrated kindness instead of cruelty.
