Unit 1 Women of achievement / a student of African wildlife
教材分析:
本文主要介绍的是英国伦敦的珍.古道尔,被美国20时代成为世界上最杰出野生动物学家,。

文章开篇写了我们跟随珍去参观黑猩猩的过程,珍是如何一步一步地走入丛林生活以及她的工作成果。

通过这篇课文的学习,我们不仅可以深入的了解这位伟大的动物学家的工作以及思想,同时可以激发自己去实现梦想,不论性别,女人照样可以有自己的成功事业。

Objects:
1. Improve the Ss‟ reading abilities, especially their skimming and scanning ability.
2. Use the new words and expressions right and freely. eg. rise/ arise/ raise, mean doing sth / mean to do sth, worth / worthy/worthwhile, the –ing form as the subject , argue, behaviour, move off

Step 1 Lead-in
Last class we had discussed some great women in history around the world. All of them had made great contributions to the society which can never be forgot in our minds.
Who can tell me who are they?
Do you remember the great British woman who went to Africa and studied chimps? Yes, she is Jane Goodall. We mentioned that she devoted all her life in the forest. Today, we‟ll learn a new passage about this great woman: Jane Goodall. Through this passage, we can learn her life in detail
.
Step 2 Listening
Ask the stuents listen the tape carefully and try to find out the answer of the following questions.
What animals were observed?
What was her job?
Step 3 Fast reading
Ask the students read the passage as quickly as they can to find out the main idea and answer the following questions.
Why do you think Jane is called a student of African wildlife?
What did Jane have to give up when she went to live in the forest?

Paragraph 1
1. rise/ arise/ raise
rise 为不及物动词表示“上升”后面不能直接接宾语。

give rise to=lead to 引起The food shortage gave rise to the serious problems.
arise 为及物动词,表示“发生,起源于”
Problems arose from the beginning.
Accidents always arise from the carelessness.
raise 及物动词表示“举起,提出” raise one‟s hand raise u p a question
另外也可以表示“抚养”
2. mean doing sth / mean to do sth
前者意为:“意味着” ,后者意为“打算;想要去做某事”
To help them means helping yourself.
They mean to make everything clear to you.
3. move off : to leave 离去
6. worthwhile: something worthwhile deserves the time, effort, or money you give to it. 值得(花时间,精力,金钱)的
The effort seemed worthwhile.
worth / worthy/worthwhile
worth 只能在句中充当表语成分。

This second-hand car is worth 2000 dollars now.
The exhibition is worth a visit/visiting.
It‟s not worth getting angry with him.
worthy 可以在句中充当表语成分,也可以充当定语成分。

其后可以接of sth, 也可以接to do sht.
This phenomenon is worthy of being studied.
This is a worthy article.
worthwhile :与worthy 一样,既可以充当表语,也可以充当定语。

用作表语时,可以接动词不定式或动名词形式。

The Summer Palace is worthwhile going/to go to have a visit.
Helping old people is a worthwhile activity.
Thank you for your worthwhile suggestion.
Grammar
1.Subject-verb agreement
Our group are all going to visit them in the forest.
Our group is going to be tired.
In the two sentences, the projects are the same, but the predicates are different.
Why?
Because the former …group‟ means all of us, it presents many people. The later …group‟ means the group as a whole. It is just one group.
2. the –ing form as the subject
Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day。

Paragraph 2
New words
1. behaviour :the way that someone behaves 举止,行为
good/ bad behaviour The headmaster will not tolerate bad behaviour in class. behaviour towards Her father‟s behaviour towards him was irrationa l.
2. observe : to see and notice something; to watch sb or sth carefully观察
The car I had observed earlier was no longer there.
3.childhood : the period of time when you are a child 童年;幼年时代
Grammar
Inversion: Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project.
正确语序:She was allowed to begin her project after her mother came to help her for the first few months.
为了与语气上的需要或者是为了强调状语,可以把状语提到句首,这时后面的句子需采用倒装。

Only then did I understand what she meant.
In comes the teacher!
当表示否定意义的副词或短语,如never、seldom 、rarely 、hardly 、scarcely、not until 、by no mean 、in no time、in no way等位于句首时要倒装。

Eg: Never have I seen such a strange person.
Not until I began to work did I realize how much time I had wasted. Paragraph 3
New words
1. the rest of 后面既可以接可数名词,也可以接不可数名词,根据其含义来决定后面动词的单复数形式。

The rest of the money was given to his son.
The rest of the sailors were missing.
2. argue : to disagree with someone in words, often in an angry way 争论,争吵
argue with sb argue over/about/against sth argue for sb
I am not going to argue with you.
They are arguing about how to spend the money.
3. lead a + adj + life 过着…的生活
4. crowd in (想法,问题等)涌上心头
crowd : noun a large group of people in a public place 人群a crowd of 一群verb to gather together in large numbers, filling a particular place 聚集,塞满
A great number of confused thoughts crowded my brain.
Step 4 Homework
