- Handout: "Narrative Essay Prompt"
- Writing paper
- Pencils/pens
- Timer
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of a narrative essay to the students. Explain that a narrative essay is a type of writing that tells a story, usually in the first person. Discuss the key elements of a narrative essay, such as setting, characters, plot, and theme. Show the students a sample narrative essay to provide them with a visual example.
2. Brainstorming (15 minutes):
Hand out the "Narrative Essay Prompt" and have the students spend 5 minutes independently brainstorming ideas for their essay. Encourage them to think about memorable experiences, events, or moments in their lives that they would like to write about. After the timer goes off, have the students share their ideas with a partner.
3. Planning (15 minutes):
Have the students use their brainstormed ideas to develop a plan for their narrative essay. They should outline the main events of their story, the characters involved, and the setting. Encourage them to think about the theme of their essay and how they will develop this through their narrative.
4. Writing (20 minutes):
Have the students begin writing their narrative essay using the outline they have developed. Encourage them to use descriptive language and vivid details to create a engaging story. Remind them to use proper grammar and punctuation. Provide support and assistance to students who may need help during this time.
5. Revision (10 minutes):
After the writing time is complete, have the students spend time revising and editing their essays. Encourage them to check for clarity, coherence, and grammar errors. Provide feedback and guidance to students as they revise their work.
6. Sharing (10 minutes):
Have the students volunteer to share their completed narrative essays with the class. Encourage them to read their essays aloud and provide positive feedback and constructive criticism to their peers.
Assessment:
The assessment for this lesson will be based on the students' completed narrative essays. Evaluate the essays based on their organization, development of characters and setting, use of descriptive language, and grammar and punctuation. Provide written feedback to students on their essays, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement.
Extensions:
For students who need additional challenge, have them write a narrative essay from the perspective of a different person or object involved in the story. For students who need additional support, provide them with sentence frames and vocabulary lists to help them with their writing.。
