Generally speaking, waiting rooms are always filled with a lot of impatient people. However, a project carried out by The Observer suggests that people regard these spaces as a place of refuge (避难), a window in their tightly scheduled lives.
Ella Doroudy, Margate Station
We were at the beach for the day, and now are on our way home. We don't have to wait very long, because we checked the timetable so we got here in time for the train. I just chat with my mates, really, and listen to music until the train comes. Waiting with other people is easier because you can kill time when you're talking about stuff.
Caroline Lacey, Streatham Dental Center
I don't really get nervous about seeing the dentist, but since these two filings (补牙的材料) came out I've been in sharp pain. It's very bright and airy here, so it's quite calming. Usually I kill time by reading magazines. I've been coming to the dentist as and when I need to, but now it's got to be regualr.
Katie Hawkins, Model Casting
I was a bit late today, which I'm quite pleased about because some of these girls have been waiting ages. You can't help but look at everyone else a bit — you look at the other girls and think: "I wonder if they'll like her better than they like me." While I'm waiting, I'm thinking: "Oh come on.
I do have a life!"
Paul Thomas, Royal London Hospital
I feel pretty indifferent (满不在乎的) while I'm waiting here, to be honest. It's something I've got very used to since my motorbike accident seven years ago. I've had about 32 operations so far. It's no good rushing in thinking you're going to escape in five minutes, so I just sit back and people-watch, really.
21. What is Ella doing at Margate Station?
A. Checking the timetable.
B. Catching the train to the beach.
C. Meeting and picking her mates up.

life!"?
A. Impatience.
B. Satisfaction.
C. Amazement.
D. Confidence
24. Who enjoys looking at the people around him or her while waiting?
A. Paul Thomas.
B. Ella Doroudy
C. Katie Hawkins.

Dear Mr. Whiteman,
I'm writing to thank you for allowing Maria and me to use your office as a workspace as well as to praise your wonderful organizational skills.
Maria and I , as you know, have been in your office many times in the past few days writing letters to raise money for our community service trip to Pucallpa, Peru, where we will work with poor children. Not only did you allow us to use your office space, but also you helped us greatly
by providing us with a list of possible contributors. Without your assistance, I don't think we would have been able to raise enough money for such a trip.
We recognize that accepting our request for office space required flexibility on your part, but because of your excellent organizational skills and assistance we were able to accomplish our objectives without disturbing your daily routine. Every time we needed office supplies, such as pens, highlighters, envelops, or paper, we were able to find them with ease. Your donations of the materials and postage(邮费) needed to send over one hundred letters are most appreciated. We could not have done this without you.
You have helped us greatly this past week. Your generosity will not only provide us with this opportunity to make this trip possible, but will also be a great benefit both to the children in Pucallpa and us. Again, we thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Amy Fynmore

Did you know that Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old, and could not read until he was seven? His parents and teachers worried about his mental ability.
Beethoven's music teacher said about him, "As a composer(作曲家) he is hopeless." What if this young boy had believed it?
When Thomas Edison was a young boy, his teachers said he was so stupid that he could never learn anything. He once said, "I remember I used to never be able to get along at school. I was always at the foot of my class... My father thought I was stupid, and I almost decided that I was a stupid person." What if young Thomas had believed what they said about him?
When the sculptor (雕刻家) Auguste Robin was young, he had difficulty learning to read and write. Today, we may say he had a learning disability. His father said of him, "I have an idiot (白痴) for a son." His uncle agreed." He is uneducable." he said. What if Robin had doubted his ability?
Walt Disney was once fired by a newspaper editor because he was thought to have no "good ideas". Enrico Caruso was told by one music teacher, "You can't sing. You have no voice at all." And an editor told Louisa May Alcott that she was unable to write anything that would have popular appeal.
What if these people had listened and become discouraged? Where would our world be without the music of Beethoven, the art of Robin or the ideas of Albert Einstein and Walt Disney? As Oscar Levant once said," It's not what you are but what you don't become that hurts."
You have great potential. When you believe in all you can be, rather than all you cannot become, you will find your place on earth.
28. How many successful people are mentioned as examples in the passage?
A. Six.
B. Seven.
C. Eight.
D. Nine.

A. He can't be taught.
B. He is very clever.
C. He is different.
D. he is a late success.
31. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Working hard for success.
B. Having dreams.
C. Believing in Yourself.
D. Self-challenging.

It was Friday night at Ella's house in New Jersey, and each member of her family is enjoying a favorite show. Ella, 13, is downstairs studying YouTube baking (烘焙) videos on her iPhone. Her 10-year-old brother, Elijah, is in his room on his laptop, watching a sports match. Their parents are upstairs watching a movie on Netflix. Only one set of eyes in the house is not staring at a screen: those of Snowy, the family cat.
Not so long ago, when Ella's parents were at her age, such a scene would have been unimaginable. Back then, computers sat on desks and were mainly for doing work, and phones were just for talking. If you wanted to watch a show, you had to watch it on a TV set at the time it was aired. Plus, there were a limited number of shows to choose from.
Today, we can choose from thousands of shows, videos, and movies whenever we want. And we can watch our favorite programs on a variety of devices (设备) from just about any place we want. The number of quality shows is higher than ever. Families no longer have to fight over what to watch because every family member can watch what they want on their own devices.
But what do these changes mean for our culture? Decades ago, people of different backgrounds and beliefs would come together through their shared love of a particular show. Families spent their evenings together watching "must-see" shows.
Studies have found that today, few shows are popular everywhere. While people in rural (乡村的) areas are watching The V oice and Duck Dynasty, people in cities are watching The Simpsons and Modern Family. And there are dozens of news shows on TV and online, each with a different point of view.
Could all these choices be making our nation and our families more divided?
Ella isn't sure. But she admits that her family is worried about their habits. They made a once-a-month family movie night. They take turns choosing what to watch.
32. What can we infer from the scene in Ella's house?
A. Quality shows are badly needed in the US.
B. TV shows are no longer popular these days.
C. Pets are becoming more and more unimportant.
D. Technology has changed how we watch TV shows.
33. According to paragraph 2, we know that _____.
A. There were limited shows on TV in the past.
B. People could watch many wonderful shows on computers
C. People could enjoy movies on phones.
D. People could watch their favorite shows on TV whenever they were free
34. What is it about America culture that worries the author?
A. It may become divided.
B. It may have fewer lovers.
C. It may lack quality shows.
D. It may become out of date.
35. Why did Ella's family make a monthly family movie night?
A. To develop a good habit.
B. To strengthen family ties.
C. To explore excellent movies.
D. To develop their interest in movies.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

选项中有两项为多余选项。
Tips to stay safe and make smart choices
Even if you're a genius (天才) at school, you still might be lost when it comes to getting from point A to point B. Don't get caught in a strange place without these basic safety tips.
* Know where you're going.
Before you set out in an unfamiliar area, go to Google Maps to plan your journey and print it out.
36 Make sure that the location services are turned on on your phone, just in case you get lost.
* Know where your stuff is.
Never leave your backpack or shopping bags out of your sight. Carry your wallet in your front pocket or keep it close to your body. 37 A fun day out can turn into the worst headache ever if you realize you've left something behind.
* 38
If you have the choice between a busy street and a deserted(偏僻的) one, always pick the busy one. You are more likely to be attacked on dark, empty sidewalks than on ones with a crowd.
* Travel in packs.
Don't go anywhere — especially an unfamiliar place — without a friend or two. 39
* Don' t let your music drown you out.
There is nothing wrong with listening to your iPod as you walk around town, but keep it at a low
enough volume (音量) so you can still hear passing cars. Losing concentration puts you at risk from accidents, attacks and getting lost. 40 Don't do it. Keep your head up and pay attention to the people and things going on around you.

Text 4

W: Paul, I’m nervous.
M: Why?
W: I’m always nervous whenever I put on the headphones.
M: But you can enjoy some music first. The music is very nice.
W: Yes, it is. But when the conversation begins, I can’t catch a word.
M: You don’t have to catch every word. Try to get the keywords.
W: But how can I identify the keywords?
M: Those words that tell the main idea of the conversation or are repeated several times in it.
W: Well, probably I should get what is the main idea first.
