Definition:This entry provides the distribution of the population
according to age. Information is included by sex and age group (0-14 years,15-64 years,65 years and over). The age structure of a population
affects a nation's key socioeconomic issues. Countries with young populations (high percentage under age 15) need to invest more in schools, while countries with older populations (high percentage ages 65 and over) need to invest more in the health sector. The age structure can also be used to help predict potential political issues. For example, the rapid growth of a young adult population unable to find employment can lead to unrest.

There was a cut in the real value of pay, however, as inflation was higher during the same period, at 3.5%.
In just five years since April 2007, prices have risen by 18%, while average annual earnings have gone up by just 10%.
That has left wages and salary increases lagging behind inflation by 8% in just five years.
The pay gap between men and women shrank in the year to April 2012, from 10.5% of men's full-time hourly earnings to 9.6%.
Full-time male workers earned on average £28,700 in the year, while women earned £23,100, a difference of £5,600.
Average education:17% of people in the UK have a degree, but most people have passed their A-Levels. The latter would therefore be the
average education level for the UK.
The qualifications gap between the most and least educated areas in Britain is growing wider
Richmond Park in south-west London has the highest proportion of graduates, 64%, compared with the lowest, 10% in Hodge Hill, Birmingham.
The lowest-achieving areas are found in industrial cities of England's North and Midlands, and parts of East Anglia.
Size of immigrant:7.5% of people living in Britain were born abroad.
Where do people born abroad live in Britain? As the maps on the right show, it is mainly London, the South East and other major cities。
