On the night of October 16th, near ten o'clock, my mother prepared what would be my Dad's last meal ...bacon and eggs.
That week he worked night shift in a Potash mine. He started at midnight.
Just after 2 am, the group that Dad was in charge of went for coffee. There was a machine that always had to be operated and he said, “It's okay. You guys all go and I'll work it.”
The machine would move quickly, periodically (周期性地) and for one moment Dad made a mistake —he didn't pay attention, and it struck him in the head. The workers rushed and cut the base of the machine and transported it with him in the ambulance but father died on the way.
In the middle of this ordeal (苦难), a spokesperson for the hospital asked my mother if they could take one of my father's eyes — that they had a person waiting for it. To my surprise, my mother nodded.
Years later, in the late summer of 2008, I was at the Woodlawn Cemetery (公墓) where my father's body rests. As I finished praying and stood, a man from behind me said,“How are you now, Frank?”
I quickly thought, knowing only the family, and his friends and coworkers called him “Frank”, that this man must have known him.
As I turned to face him, I replied, “He's my father.”
This man, Frank Bazylak, as I would learn later, replied confidently, “I worked with your father for a short time — just over a year — but he made an impact on my life. He was so passionate, so demanding and yet so giving.”
“You know, he wasn't meant to be there that day. But that w as Frank,” he said.
I'd heard wonderful stories about father from family and from friends, but four decades later and from a stranger, there in the cemetery, this ...after all of that time ... and there ... beautiful!

The way we do things round here
Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decid ed to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “We're kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don't just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface — dress, food and hours of work — while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate (气候), while getting on with business.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality (准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and sometime in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.

Jason Detzel was bored with his work as a psychologist, and he was tired of spending all day in an office. Dr. Detzel felt that in the city he was losing touch with something important, so he quit his job and started a farm.
He and his business partner found 80 acres of land in a small town and signed a 10year lease (租约). While some farms used a lot of machinery, they decided they wanted to do as much as possible with their own hands. They built a corral (畜栏) for the cows, pig shelters and a house for the chickens.
“I'm definitely happier being out in the fields with my animals. Even if there are bad days, I'm still happy,” Dr. Detzel said. “When you're inside all day, you don't get to see nat ure working.”
“The job is different every day on the farm. It's amazing,” he said. “You're a farmer. You're an animal doctor. You're a pipe fitter. You're definitely a carpenter
a lot. You're a jack of all trades (万事通), master of none. That's what I like about it.”
Learning how to manage the animals had been one of the biggest challenges of starting the farm, Dr. Detzel said. He learned that it was important to stick to a routine. That's why he rang the same bell and called to the cows in the same way each day. The routine helped keep the cows calm and cooperative.
It wasn't easy for Dr. Detzel to be accepted by the other farmers in his community. With all his tattoos (文身), he looked very different. When he started the farm he was in his early 30s, while most other farmers were older. There weren't many young people starting farms, because it had become harder and harder for small family farms to make much income.
Dr. Detzel said that began to change when more people became locavores. A locavore is someone who tries to eat food grown and raised nearby. By shopping at their local farmers' market, many locavores hope to reduce the amount of energy used to ship food long distances. Many locavores like knowing where their food comes from and being able to talk to the farmers about what chemicals were used and how the animals were treated.

With ecotourism on the rise, ecohotels_are_fast_becoming_the_darling_of_the_ travel_industry. These days, however, staying at an ecohotel doesn't necessarily mean vacationing in a tree house in the Costa Rican jungle, although that is certainly a choice. The majority of ecohotels fall into one of several categories: hotels and resorts that conserve ecologically important habitats; “green” hotels that reduce, recycle, minimize waste, and protect water; sustainable hotels that harvest food from gardens on the hotel property or get part or all of their power from renewable energy; hotels that encourage community involvement such as guests taking part in trail clearing; and hotels that offer some form of environmental education to their guests.
As such, ecohotels are a various group. Stylish urban hotels like the Willard InterContinental Washington focus on energy conservation whereas the Rosario Resort & Spa on Orcas Island in Washi ngton State offers a wildly popular “green” vacation package where guests can “take a hike, clear a trail”.
No matter what you call them, ecohotel, ecolodge, ecoresort, or green hotel, they're all part of the “greening” of the tourism industry.
Part of what drives this greening of the hotel industry is no doubt competition. Going green is yet another way to distinguish a hotel from the mass of other excellent
hotels that consumers have to choose from. But for many hotels, it's also part of their philosop hy. With the concept of “going green” firmly rooted in consumers' minds, ecohotels have taken it to the next level, and whether or not money is the driving factor behind the greening of the hotel industry doesn't matter so much as it's good for the planet.

A Place to Visit
There is a place of interest in my hometown. It is extremely beautiful. Every year, many visitors pour in to see its beauty.
The first wonder that interests you is a smart lake surrounded by mountains on its three sides, dotted with small boats. You can see fish moving freely in its clean water. Also, on the top of one mountain stand some ancient buildings, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Surprisingly, they are still in good condition despite their old age. At the foot of the mountain another natural wonder must amaze you. It is the famous underground cave where it is warm in winter and cool in summer.
Interested? You are welcome to come for a visit.。
