对一本书的评价英文
对一本书的评价英文对一本书的评价英文篇一Hamlet was written by the famous writer William Shakespeare in 1603, and became popular at the Renaissance Time. It’s said that the story is based on the Prince Amleth, which can be date back to 12th century. But the first history drama is Tomas Kyds’ writing. Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, and Othello are the four tragedies. Hamlet describes the following story:The prince Hamlets’ father dead abruptly, and the Queen Gertrude married with the new King Claudius within two months. Some people suspected that Claudius usurped the throne by marrying his sister-in-law, it’s he murdered the Ex-King.Absolutely, it’s a big attack for Prince Hamlet. He felt the marriage is illegal and unduly. Meanwhile he always wear black clothes in order to express his mourn, and he was puzzled until the day he heard of the Ghost. His close friend Horatio told Hamlet that he met the ghost of the King before the daybreak, so Hamlet decided to keep watch at night with the guard in hopes of seeing the ghost of his father. As expected, they met the ghost at midnight. Though the guard tried to stop the prince following the ghost, Hamlet came along with the ghost to a quiet place. The ghost told the fact that Claudius killed him by pouring mercury into his eyes and ears. Hamlet sworn to revenge, but on condition that not to hurt his mother. Then the ghost fades away.Because of the harassment, Hamlets’ health became worse and worse. Fearing that Claudius would perceive his plan of revenge, he pretended mad. So that he can not only conceal his anxiety butalso keep watch on Claudius. From then on, Hamlet performed strange behavior. Even be parted with his beloved girl Ophelia. But he didn’t have any chance to approach the King, for there’re so many guards around the King all the time.By chance, there is a theatrical troupe in the palace. Hamlet ordered them to perform the scene of murder. The reaction of Claudius and the Queen is too erratic tocontinue watching the play. That let Hamlet make sure they are the murderer. Later, the Queen met Hamlet secretly, but Hamlet killed Polonius mistakenly, the ghost appeared again. Hamlet persuaded his mother to help him take revenge on Claudius. But Claudius drove Hamlet out of the country. On the way to exile, Hamlet came across the pirates. Fortunately, the pirates let him go.Finally, Hamlet returned to his country. Claudius arranged a fencing game between Hamlet and Laertes, and prepared a cup of poison wine for the winner. Sure enough, Hamlet won. But the Queen drank the wine unwittingly. Unluckily, Hamlet was hurt by Laertes with the poison sword. When Hamlet was at the last gasp, he killed Claudius. The story comes to the end. There will be one thousand different Hamlets in one thousand different readers. After reading the book, I am touched by the spirit of Hamlet. At the end of the story, almost all the central figures were dead. They are the pioneer who tried to confront their fate, but they failed at last. They want to redeem the past time, but they obtain nothing. Like them, we always feel sorry about the past, but we can change nothing but accept. We need to think more about the future but not the past, nobody can live in the memoryof the past. The words “to be or not to be, that is a question” reflects the truth of choice. Hamlet chose the revenge, and give up his love, friendship, even his high position and great wealth. So many times we are hesitated and irresolute. When we are faced with the choice, it means give up something, like delicious food or new clothes or other valuable stuff. Although the choices are zillion, they are limited. If we want live a happy and substantial life, we need to grasp every chance of the choice. Positive choice for our fade is the shortcut to life peak. The sentence is also suit the Queen. After the King dead, she was at a crossroads. That is morality or lust, while she chose the later one. No matter which one she chose, she was choosing adversity. The ending is in accordance with expectation. A choice even can change one’s whole life, so we should be careful about every decision we made. The story is a vivid reflection of the social reality in the 16th century. Many people have the rights of choose, but they don’t know how to decided. Their futures are manipulated by the fade, and they want resist the God’s will. However, the reality doesn’t allow any change. Hamlet is an anguished sage rather than a brave hero. The book has another name The Revenge of Prince Hamlet. Actually, the Prince didn’t succeed in revenge, because he was dead at last. Life is the most precious thing we possess, so weshould cherish our lives at every moment. For me, Hamlet was impetuous. He can not change the world or fade, but he can change himself to adapt the world. One may be not successful in doing everything, but he must can do something well. This is the second time I read this book, and my felling is more intense than before. Every one of us is Hamlet, who fights against the trouble in our daily life. Beyond any doubt, we should not give in to the straits.I hope everyone could read the story more than one time, because it not only tell you the story about Hamlet but also teach you something in your life time.对一本书的评价英文篇二Recently,I read a famous novelThe Old Man and the Sea,I learn many things from it.Santiago -- a strong, not afraid of difficulties are not afraid of failure. When talk to Mark Twain, “humor” is an inevitable word to be discussed, as for Twain, the goals of humor often go beyond entertainment and can be aimed at satirizing and debunking and it also embodies his wit and wisdom.Twain used contemporary language in his books to bring his characters to life. This realistic prose style influenced numerous American writers. Ironically, for his time Twain was liberal on racial and many social issues. Mark Twain was an incredibly prolific American author who lived through the times that played an important role in shaping American culture. Mark Twain is called “the father of American L iterature”. 汤姆索亚历险记 作者故事梗概 英文
The Book Report of Tom SawyerTom Sawyer is one of the representative masterpieces of American reputable humorist writer Mark Twain who is renowned for his writing skills—black humor, sarcasm, colloquial language and language of local color. Its publication and circulation has gained great success, which can be attested by the fact that it remains in print and the translations are still read all over the world. The story centers on a boy named Tom Sawyer, whose incredible adventurous experience and the way leading to his success permeating throughout the whole story. Although the protagonist Tom is a mischievous and naughty boy, he also has the good quality of daring, ingenuity and innocence which deserves us to learn from. This interesting and attractive tale is not only to commemorate our valuable childhood in the past, but also refracts deeper social situation—criticizing the hypocritical society, religious rites and stereotyped schooling.Tom Sawyer is in essence a sort of autobiography of Mark Twain himself.Chapter one fully shows Tom is a troublemaker. Tom ate Aunt Polly’s jam stealthily without permission and got away from punishment by playing tricks. Later, out of his dissatisfaction with the way the Negro was, he fought with him. Naturally, he came back home with dirty garments, which made Aunt Polly resolved to punish Tom. Thus, Tom sacrificed his play time on Saturday for what he’d done. The witty characteristics of Tom found the ultimate expression in Chapter two——the impressive fragment of whitewashing the fence. Tom sawyer pretended to be immersed in painting the fence to captivate his fellow Ben’s attention and stimulated his curiosity. After a hard persuasion made by Ben, he showed reluctant to give up the brush, though he was alacrity in fact. Tom, taking full advantage of human’s psychology, lured more children to send him presents to exchange the opportunity to whitewash the fence. In these two excerpts, we can trace Mark Twain’s exceptional writing skills. First and foremost, Mark Twain is excelling in black humor which combines humor and sarcasm pretty well. His interesting stories entertain the readers, while actually they disclose the ridiculous reality. As Mark Twain he himself says: Only the humor based on the reality can it perpetuate. For example, the sentence of ‘in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain’——to the effect that anything most difficult to attain is the best and people are pursuing for it furiously. Only if you capture this vulnerability can you achieve what you want. Another example is the definition given by Mark Twain of ‘work and play’ precisely helps us to distinguish and understand them——work is something you’re obliged to do, while play goes the opposite way. Mark Twain goes deep into human’s internal heart and comprehends the human beings well. On one hand, his humorous remarks make you jovial, but on the other hand they make youcontemplate and reflect ourselves and the surroundings. Moreover, the language Mark Twain uses is very colloquial related to our daily life, which is easily to understand. Furthermore, Mark Twain uses many rhetorical devices to make his language more wonderful and imaginative. For example, the sentence depicts that the voice is loud enough for the furniture to hear, which exaggerates Aunt Polly’s voice volume and personifies the furniture. The last but not the least, the local color is also an essential writing skill of Mark Twain. We can find some words seem written mistakenly, but in fact they are the mirror of local color. He uses the local dialect to better convey the regional style. In conclusion, Tom Sawyer is a book which is necessary for us to read which reflects the society in 1960’s of America. What’s more, the writing skills also deserve us all to learn.。

儿子与情人 book report
Sons and loversAt first sight of this book, the name, sons and lovers, give me a deep impression. Its name draws my attention so deep that I want to known what happens in the story. Before I read it, I guess it‟s a story about mother and son‟s lover, as it were, Oedipus Complex. Just as I guess, the story is about heroine Mrs. Morel and hero Paul‟s love, they are mother and son, but their feelings beyond their relationship, they love each of them just like husband and wife‟s feelings. Why does writer write this story? There have some guess, one is that this story is based on writer D.H. Lawrence‟ li ves. His mother‟s strong and abnormal motherhood smother his normal love toward other women, this story has details about his painful lives. The first part of story is about the early married life of the Morels and the child of Morels family. Mrs. Morel is the second girl of a good old family, and she is a rather proud, unyielding and delicate girl. Before married, she is a girl who all man likes her and she has vision of future life. At 23 years old, she meets a young, Morel, who is well set-up, erect, and very smart, at a Christmas party. The miner seems melted away before her. They fall into love and the next Christmas they are married. For three months she is perfectly happy, for six months she is very happy. But in the seventh month, she found she is cheated by Morel through an unpaid bill. They have debt and even the house they live need paying rent, which she did not known before. The young wife says nothing and her manner changes toward her husband. When the third Christmas comes, she will bear him a first child. She does not feel good when the child born though Morel is good to her, as good as gold. She feels lonely with him. At last, Mrs. Morel despises her husband, she puts her heart into the beautiful child, and Morel has begun to neglect her, the novelty of his own home is gone. The battle between husband and wife starts, bloody battle that ends only with the death of one. Morel…s temper has become so irritable that the man begin to bully when the child has a little noise. They always have quarrel on how to treat child, and at last he is an outsider to her, her life only has child, William. Morel spends royally, and money all goes in drink. Before Paul comes, the husband begins to realize his wife‟s hard housework and life. The husband treats his wife better, he help her do clean and prepare dinner by himself. When Paul is born, at that time she feels, in some far inner place of her soul, that she and her husband are guilty. She no longer loves her husband and she does not wants this baby before, but mow the boy come and pulls at heart. The mother wants to love the boy with all her force, with all her soul she would make up for it for having brought it into the world unlovely. Morel‟s temper is worse and all hate him.During Morel‟s illness, their relationship has a little better; Mrs. Morel has more tolerant because she leaves him away in heart, that Morel does not know. The last child has come, William grows up and shape up. Everything of children goes well, but their father is more incur odium. William is away home for goodfuture, but latter dead because of ill and his love girl, at that time Paul has a just-so-so job.The second part of this story is about love between Paul and Miriam and Clara and his mother. Now, Mrs. Morel has clung to Paul, Paul has helped sustain home. Paul has been many times up to Willey Farm and knows Miriam. Miriam is a romantic girl and her heart is filled with treasure religion and she pursues a soul life. But she does not like her position as a farm girl, she want to learn in order to gain respect and change her position. She admires Paul because Paul can draw picture and speak French, and algebra meant.Paul feels under Miriam‟s mother and Miriam emulates Paul, in which situation the love between Paul and Miriam starts. They are usually going out and talk for a long time, and then Paul found Miriam always has strong emotion, and he suffers because of her extreme emotion. He think his mother…s reserve is better than Miriam and proud of it by heart. Miriam wants to be a man because men have everything, she want to be independence like men. From then on, Paul teaches Miriam algebra, which has talked to his mother and gets approval. He gives lessons so fast that Miriam can not keep up with and can not understand, but says nothing, which makes Paul angry. At that time, Paul starts to draw picture. He enjoys the night with his mother that he keeps printing and his mother do some needlework or do some reading. He feels very happy when he sees his mother radiant cheek. In contact with Miriam he gains insight; his vision goes deeper. From his mother he draws the life-warmth, the strength to produce; Miriam urges this warmth into intensity like white light. They are all developing latter not only mind but also sex mind. He and Miriam, both of them do not acknowledge that they love each other. He thinks he is rational and she thinks she is lofty. However, as the matter of fact, Miriam burns with jealous when she sees Paul talk with her sister friendly, there has a big problem that she does not known Paul in what position in her heart. She thinks love gives her shame. She found his family doesn‟t like and welcome she through tiny things and she no longer go to his home. And then they do not go to library. But Mrs. Morel realizes this arrangement is good and contented.Morels have two week holidays with Miriam, Paul often stay with his mother, they go seaside and cross field together. During this holiday, Miriam has no chance to be with Paul because of his mother, on the whole he keeps close to his mother as if he is her man. One night, Paul and Miriam walks, suddenly, Paul looks at Miriam lovingly, he want to neck her, he want to kiss her, but they do nothing because of their sensitive and shrink. They come back to quarters, his mother angry his later to dinner, in essence, his mother angry on their walk outside. That night, Paul, Mrs. Morel and Miriam say nothing and not neglect each. Mrs. Morel hates Miriam because of Miriam‟s love toward her son. All people dislike Miriam because of Mrs. Morel, so does Paul.Paul and Miriam get together again, but the same as before, not intimate. When Paul goes home later, his mother knows her son still be with Miriam, it make her angry. Her son asks why, and the mother doesn‟t know else. Paulstruggles for his love to Miriam; he knows she wants his soul out of his body. Then they break up. But Paul still helps Miriam to teach French, it let his mother ill and badly. They have quarrel and her son know he is the life to his mother, he realizes his mother is the chief thing to him, the only supreme thing. At that night, his mother talks him that “I have never had a husband, not really.”And then, her son strolls his mother‟s hair, kisses his mother like her man and gently strolls her face. “Grace under pressure”——A book report of The old man and the sea Hemingway, a famous modern novelist of America, once said “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” It is his positive attitude to life that endows the novel’ s protagonist — Santiago with the character of courage, confidence, dignity and never giving up. He is still strong and unyielding and goes forward in the face of the strike of tremendous pressure and misfortune from the external world. Santiago maintains dignity and courage with a grace of winner though eventually he fails. In the article, the big marlin was a victim of the elderly, the old fisherman was a victim of a shark, but the shark eventually became a victim of nature. This is a reflection of Hemingway's stubborn pessimism complex. If life means losing everything that humans can do nothing. The book created a classic old fisherman image. A Cuban fisherman named Santiago, he fishing alone. He caught a very huge marlin in the 84 days after have gained nothing. But this time he have met a shark, the elderly and the Sharks were desperate struggle, the result is the big marlin eaten by sharks, old fisherman finally dragged home only a bare skeleton fish. Although the old fisherman failed, but his performance during the fight with the fish in an extraordinary perseverance and courage, the performance can not be conquered by a moral victory, he can be a real man of indomitable spirit. The book by the old fisherman with sharks wits scene, describing the delicate, fascinating. Authors from various angles depict vicious cunning sharks. Pushed hard for the elderly to keep their hard-won catch of a giant marlin. Fully reflects the old fearless spirit. Although the final old fisherman failed, big marlin or be eaten by sharks, old fisherman finally dragged home only a bare skeleton fish. It already does not matter, because the value of a person's life has been adequately reflected in the hunt for marlin in the process. Who strive for their ideals, fought, He is not a winner? The old fisherman was an winner for his courage to challenge his own weakness and confidence. Because he never compromises and surrender to the big marlin and the shark.“A man can be destroyed but not defeated”the old fisherman's last words are rich in philosophy. As musicians Beethoven said,“I can be destroyed, but I can n’t be conquered. ”As long as people are flawed. When a person is admitted to the defect and try to overcome it rather than succumb to it, this is human nature. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit. It 's a long road, difficult and full of ups and downs, but as long as they meet the challenge, he will always be a real winner! In real life, we will encounter various difficulties frustration, because there are people like the elderly, they dared to face difficulties and challenges, they insist in the end, never say die, regardless of the result is success or failure, they are worthy to be respect forever. Because he brought us the noblest self-confidence!。

A Book Report on Sons and Lovers 儿子与情人——劳伦斯Sons and Lovers is a novel written by David Herbert Lawrence and it was first published in 1913 in London by Wyman & Sons. D. H. Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Notts, on September 11, 1885, the fourth child of a miner who had been employed at Brinsley Colliery since he was 7 years old. In 1911, his first novel The White Peacock was published. Sons and Lovers is divided into two parts and is composed of 15 chapters altogether. The story, set in England, can be interpreted as an autobiographical novel of Lawrence. The hero of the book, Paul Morel, is the second son of a miner's family. His mother, Mrs. Morel, is a daughter of a mid-class family. Because of the differences in family background and education, a shadow is soon cast upon the married life of Mrs. Morel. And this shadow is darkened by Mr. Morel's laziness and alcoholism. By misfortune or bad luck, Mr. Morel has an accident and becomes a cripple, which changes him into a man of bad temper. As a result, the couple shares less and less the things in common and is driven farther and farther apart from each other. Little by little, Mrs. Morel transports her attention and love to her children, especially her two sons, William and Paul. She encourages them to leave the small mining region for a big city to find opportunities for a better life. After the death of her first son, William, because of hard work and pneumonia, Mrs. Morel's divided attention and love is poured completely upon Paul. The mother's abnormal love robs Paul of his normal love for his girl friend. Sons and Lovers has always been claimed since its publication to be another version of Oedipus complex. But D. H. Lawrence is in no sense an imitator. Sons and Lovers is truly an autobiographical novel. It describes an ordinary life of a coal miner's family. The abnormal love from the mother deprives Paul of his independent personality and mental health. It is perhaps because of this true picture of life that the novel has won Lawrence everlasting reputation.劳伦斯的经典之作女主角:莫瑞尔男主角:保罗没有人会否认母爱的伟大,但母爱是单方面的。

A Book Report of The Old Man and the SeaThe Old Man and the Sea is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway, an American novelist. The story is set in the 20th century after World War II, which is based on the novel written true story Hemingway himself has experienced.Exactly, it’s a story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. Leading character Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed. At first 84 days, he did not even fish one fish. He did not have enough food, and many locals to doubt his fishing technique. Some even laugh at him. So, He decided to go to the sea to fish food and proved that he is a skilled fisherman. On the eight-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does as promised, sailing his skiff far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and venturing into the Gulf Stream. At noon, a big fish, marlin, take the bait that Santiago has placed before. Although the old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in. Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat. He knows perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up. Since then, they began their three-day fighting. The entire time, Santiago, endures constant pain from the fishing line. Eventually, the third day, the fish tires, and Santiago manages to pull the marlin in close enough to kill it with a harpoon thrust. However, things do not go smoothly as he expected. On his way home, he is attacked buy several crowds of shark. Although he kills the sharks in the end, they have devoured the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only skeleton. The old man arrives home before daybreak, and sleeps very deeply. Later on, the old man wakes up and finds the little boy Mandolin staying with him, and decides to go to sea to fish again. In fact, the story contains many different symbols and themes .By reading this book, I was deeply impressed by the old man and what he said “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Santiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. But the struggle somehow enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. The old man sets a good example for us. He teachers us that we should fight and never lose faith, never give up. No matter how hard the life is, it’s possible for us to overcome the difficulties.。

Reading ReportofThe Old Man and the SeaRecently I have read The Old Man and the Sea, I was deeply moved by the old man and his spirit. The author of the book Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous American novelist, short-story writer and essayist. The Old Man and the Sea was written in 1951 in Cuba, and published in 1952 and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1953 and he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. The book was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works. It’s a story about a old man struggling with nature, though he was defeated at last, in some extent, he has already challenged himself and nature.Santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back.At first,a boy named Manolion had been with him,but Santiagocatch even one fish. The boy had goneat his parents’orders in a lucky boat which caught three good f ish the first week. Santiago is a very old Cuban fisherman, even he had been unable to catch a single fish for totally eight-fourdays. He didn’t give up. he made his decision that he should fish again to get over the unlucky time. And he held the belief that he could do it and he would be lucky enough to fish, but meanwhile, he should go to deeper waters. On the 85th day, he caught a massive marlin. But after two days and nights'fierc e and tough fighting, the old man was only to bring back a large c olossal marlin skeleton,a worn-out boat, and his exhausted body. But he still be appreciated.I believe everybody who has read the book must admire Santiago’sperseverance. When I read“the senior fisherman think:Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fi sh in a farther place...”I extremely admire this senior fisher man, because he by now already projected on some fish, but he ha d not settled to the present situation, but was approaches the bigger goal advance. When I read“the big marlin start fast to g ather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on th e mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fish's life,it was static floats on the water surface...My heart also liked together the big stone falls.I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread,t he relentless spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficult ly above. There is no doubt that he is great, because he never gave up in the face of difficulties that he showed great endurance in his battle against the sea. “But a man is not made for defeat ,”he said, “A man can be destroyed but not defeated .”Santiago was old just as Hemingway said “Everything about him was old except hia eyes and they were the same color as the sae and were cheerful and undefeated .”He think every day is a new day, no matter how old he was. He said “It’s better to be lucky, but I would rather be exact. Then when l are luck comes you are ready.”Santiago was poor, he had nothing except a little boat and harpoon. But he said “Now I not time to think what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.” Somebody said Santiago was a failure. Because at last he wishes that it had been a dream and the boy cried for him can really approve it. In this way I think Santiago was a lucky person. Because he still had Mandolin. The boy loved him and pitied him. If Mandolin had no money his own, he begged or stole to make sure that Santiago had enough to eat and fresh baits for his lines. The old man accepts his kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride .I think Santiago is a hero, not a failure. The value of his life was completely reflected in the way which he caught fish. He is the real winner in his own world. We can learn from him that no matter what difficulties we meet, we must hold our honor. We may lost this game, but we should never give ourselves up as hopeless. I am willing to live as the old man, to face any challenges in the future and never give up.“Vessel crossed the end of the world, into the unknown sea, hanging on the side of the bow while and rain erosion-stricken still incomparably beautiful flag, banner, brandishing a Yunlong general words glittering-beyond the limit”This is the author Hemingway’s evaluation of his work “The Old Man and the Sea”.Life itself is an endless pursuit. It’s a long road, difficulty and full of bumpy, but as long as their indomitable courage and self-confidence to a heart to meet the challenge, he will always be a real winner!。
读后感1500字英文
读后感1500字英文篇一:老人与海英文读后感1500字Impression of “The Old Man and the Sea”When I was a middle school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.At least, for my part, that is true.Firstly,I would like to review some information about this book.Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.[1] The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway’s literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers’ confidence in Hemingway’s capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner’s, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a “new classic,” and many critics favorably compared it with suc h works as William Faulkner’s “The Bear” and Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. This book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the man’s braveness and persistence. In this book, in order to suggest the profundity of the old man’s sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, Hemingway purposefully likens Santiago to Christ, who, according to Christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. Crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which Hemingway creates the symbolic parallel betweenSantiago and Christ. When Santiago’s palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of Christ suffering his stigmata. Later, when the sharks arrive, Hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls Christ’s march toward Calvary. Even the position in whichSantiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life. The major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.Santiago ,the old man of the novella’s title, Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. Despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance. The marlin ,Santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at the end of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. Manolin ,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he playsa significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ,Perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in Santiago’s village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.Martin, like Perico, Martin, a café owner in Santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiago’s supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid. From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. Almost as a reminder of Santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat.” But the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless. Because Santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tale as a chronicle of man’s battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of man’s place within nature. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitablestruggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own observation: “man is not made for de feat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch. The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of Cienfuegos” worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. While it is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend thedestructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.Santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of Africa three times. The first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. In fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported by the final image of the lions. Because Santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces—life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration—of nature. This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .篇二:爱丽丝梦游仙境英文读后感1500字“Alice?s Adventures In Wonderland” was improvised by the writer more than one hundred years ago when he was taking an outing near a river, with three little girls ,one of them named Alice .“One summer afternoon,” the story began,“Alice had a dream?” Alice and her sister were sitting under a tree when she saw a white rabbit with watch in it?s jacket. She ran after the rabbit and fell into a largerabbit-hole. She found a beautiful garden at the bottom of the hole, but she couldn?t go into it. Alice tried to use the bottle of drinks and some cakes to help her to be bigger or smaller. But she couldnt go into the garden either. She went out side and met the white rabbit. He asked Alice to get the hat for him. Alice found the hat but she got more bigger. She ate some cakes to get smaller and went away. She met Cheshire Cat which could smile. She visited the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. She went to the beautiful garden and met a strange Queen which wanted to cut off everybody?s head. She went to a stupid trial .The Queen was angry with Alice and wanted to cut off her head. A lice fought them and then she waked up. She just made a dream. In the dream Alice saw different animals doing strange thing in a wonderland .Full of full ,humor and satire ,the stories have entertained the children a lot ,but at the same time ,they also suggest in a mild irony to the adults ,especially the royal family who rule the country ,that injustice in a society must be redressed .After hearing the story ,many people ,even Queen Victoria, were greatly inspired. The story is funny and excited. It has an interesting end---Alice just had a dream. Maybe someone would think that it?s not only a dream, but also a true story. But I think it is only a dream. Alice is a strange girl whohas many interesting things. I like her.Alice has a bright fairy tales, lively and innocent, like fantasy, love brains, full of curiosity. No ghost of a trace of her a kind of innocence. It is this innocence, before starting to read this story in another interesting, very exciting. This book everything is so strange interesting. The people there speak unpredictable, those enable Alice ate or drank the water can change into small, small cakes and large mushrooms. Paper fantasy adventure, cutecharacters, vivid language brings us to the beautiful world of fantasy, adventure, which making us together with Alice.May be we could think this story was so fanny and ridiculous after reading .But I think Alice really made a good example for me .Every time life and things get hard on me ,I will try to struggle and flight . But I found it is hard to conquer .Look at Alice ,she was so strong ,brave nd seemed didn?t afraid of anything .She had a long dream we?d never have a chance to experience ,but I actually learned much from her .And ow ,I would like to be a girl like Alice ,brave ,powerful and confidence.篇三:老人与海1000字英文读后感The Old Man and the SeaThe >is a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by pe ople “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers. In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to have symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong butcouldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton ofthe fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He behaved like a real man, a tough man. It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudd er···Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to have no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never gave in. The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. Thespirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, buteven an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one c ould be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony”, in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”. They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bravely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. What’s important in this story is not win but the value of a life. The old man dares to challenge the extremity and over the limit time and time again. What he brought to human is not only an attitude of confidence, but also a powerful strength of spirit. The >gives me a lot of revelation. What is failure? Failure is the bravery to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? Herois the people who dare to face the frustration, dare to challenge the frustration and defeat the frustration and overcome oneself, they have the courage to achieve their dream, even they have failed many times. What scary us is not the failure, but the weakness and giving in to the failure. Once you have surrendered, all your dreams will never come true. This thought also has a significant meaning to our realistic life. Life is like the old man’s fishing, even you are failed, but you will not leave regret for life, because you have struggled and faced to the challenges bravely. We’ll be the winner of our life, and our life will be splendid because we have struggled with our dreams.。

The book report of The old man and the sea
By Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. During his later life, Hemingway suffered from increasing physical and mental problems. In July 1961, he committed suicide by shooting, himself. Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement and had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing.
The Old Man and the Sea is based on the novel written true story. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, met old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway by a ship in the storm victims, Fuentes and Hemingway rescued. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes developed a profound friendship. In 1936, Fuentes was far out to sea to catch a big fish. Fishing is one of the most dangerous work in the word. They must face up to the dangerous environment. Also they must face the loneliness. The story is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman. At first 84 days, he did not fish one fish. He did not have enough food, and many locals doubt his fishing technique. So, he decided to go to the sea to fish food and proved that he is a skilled fishermen. Finally, he found there is a big fish but he
didn't pull. He fought with the big fish for several days, and discovered that it was a big marlin. Eventually, he defeated the fish. However, the fish's blood smell brought in several crowds of sharks. These fierce sharks snatched the marlin's meat. The exhausted old man returned himself to fight with these sharks. At that moment, although he knew utterly it was difficult for him to win, the old man did not give up.
Usually, when people finished this masterpiece, they always are fully convinced by the great old man’s determination, courage, and toughness. I have already heard of this masterpiece for many years. People love it, prise it, and respect it. But when I finished it, at the first moment, I just wonder: Actually, our human-beings don’t know what we really want, what we dream for, and what we fight for. The problems are always produced by ourselves continuously. Then, we try our best to defeat it and even, destroy it. But to the essence, who on earth was defeated till the end? And what’s more, after the conquest, what are we going to do and what can we do? The essence of our Chinese traditional culture is the affinity while for the American culture it emphasizes the conquest, that’s really totally different and it’s what we should think ove r.
