AMicrowaves may be great at warming up food, but what about warming people?Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe, according to Charles R. Burlier of the Microwave Research Center in Marlborough, New Hampshire. Low-power microwaves only penetrate (贯穿) the skin (low-power microwave penetration in a ham is about 0.2 inches, for example) and with no negative effects. To test this idea, Buffler subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard 500-watt, 2459 MHz magnetron (磁控管). He found that a person will start to feel warmth at about 20 milliwatts per square centimeter (mw. / sq. cm. ) ; a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and 50mw. / sq. cm. By comparison, a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85 mw. / sq. cm. And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1000 mw. / sq. cm.In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron, says Buffler. When you stepped into the living room, for example, a motion detector (运动感应器)would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a mic rowave oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on, you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the temperature of your coffee table. (You could, however, make your favorite easy chair even more comfortable by treating it with a radiation-absorbing chemical.)While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up whole-body microwave heaters in houses, Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock(家畜) farmers. Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold. Microwaves could warm the lambs safely and quickly.26. Which of the following can tell the main idea of the passage?A. A new heating system.B. A new microwave oven.C. A popular technique.D. The magnetron.27. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following does not describe the characteristics of amicrowave heater?A. It directly heats people in a room.B. It heats walls and furniture in a room.C. It is safe.D. It saves energy.28. The test conducted by Buffler shows that when a person feels comfortable warmth, he receivesabout ________________.A. 20 mw. / sq. cm.B. 40 mw. / sq. cm.C. 60 mw. / sq. cm.D. 85 mw. / sq. cm.29. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following fills the room with low-power microwaves?A. The magnetron.B. The motion detector.C. The microwave oven.D. The radiation-absorbing chemical.30. Which of the following statements about microwave heaters would Buffler most probablyagree with?A. Microwave heaters will soon be widely used by homeowners.B. Microwave heaters sometimes make people feel uncomfortable.C. Perhaps microwave heaters will be first used by livestock farmers, who wish to protect theirlambs in winter.D. Microwave heaters cannot be accepted by the public because they are somewhat unsafe.BI can’t remember a winter being as cold as this in Pennsylvania, but I’m surethere were colder days.Even though the daylight hours are growing longer minute by minute, it’s easy to find an excuse not to go out unless you absolutely must, but then again I often have to push myself to accomplish things.People I speak to have been in all kinds of nasty moods. They say they’re ―under the weather,‖ not feeling good about this time of year.As I stood outside with my two dogs yesterday, it was so cold that my nose and face felt frozen and my ears were stinging.Of course, that doesn’t matter to Ricky and Lucy. They have a routine they must go through to find just the fighting spot no matter how cold or hot it is.So I wait. But this time it was different. As cold as it was, I suddenly was excited thinking about how wonderful this extreme cold really was. Then the sun broke through the clouds and memories of summer’s extremely hot days flashed through my mind. I could remember standing in the heat of the afternoon, with sweat pouring down my brow and the hot, burning sun against my face. I reminded myself then and there that in the cold of the winter I would wish I had this heat.I was grateful for the extremes. Without the extremes in my life, I would never appreciate the days when things were just right. Without the extremes, life would be boring. It’s being pushed to one of the extremes that makes us appreciate the middle more. Health challenges remind us that we need to pay more attention to how we live. Financial extremes remind us that when things go smoothly it’s also time to save for raining days.I’ve come to the conclusion that all too often I find a reason not to be happy with where I amat that moment.Whether it’s hot or cold, good health or bad, in the money or out of it, I alwayswant it to be different.I’m tired of being ―Under the Weather!‖31. At last the author drew a conclusion that ______.A. happiness cannot be gained by complaintsB. things will be different whatever the situation isC. happiness will fail to come to you if you can find a reasonD. he is disappointed with his present situation35. What is the best title for this passage?A. Follow the RoutineB. Two Extremes in LifeC. Changes should be ExpectedD. Weather InformationCAround 200 people who thought their only experience of the London 2012 Olympic Games would be minor heats of synchronized swimming (花样游泳)have received an unexpected change to the men's 100m final because of an embarrassing ticketing mistake. The London 2012 Organizing Committee (Locog)confirmed on Wednesday that an error in its ticket selling had led to four synchronized swimming competitions being oversold by 10, 000 tickets.Locog and its ticket agent spent the Christmas period contacting ticket holders and offering them alternatives that included the tickets they had applied for but unsuccessful. The changes need no additional cost. It has also offered to return any discrepancy (差额)if the new tickets cost less than the originals. Locog said the replacement tickets would come from a number of unsold seats across the Olympic Games and that it was doing all it could to make up the error to the fans who bought tickets.Locog said the error occurred in the summer, between the first and second round of ticket sales, when a member of staff made a mistake, entering ―20,000‖ into the computer rather than the correct figure of 10,000 remaining tickets. The error was discovered when Locog checked the number of tickets that had been sold against the final seating numbers, and began contacting ticket holders before Christmas.Thousands of ticket holders have already struck lucky, changing to tickets for major events including swimming and athletics finals, and in around 200 cases the hottest of all, the men’s 100m final. Locog said the decision to award 100m final tickets was made because one of thesynchronized swimming competitions was on the same afternoon as the event, August 5.36. As a result of the ticketing mistake, about 200 people ____.A. will luckily be able to watch the men’s 100m finalB. will not enjoy the synchronized swimming eventsC. will have to change their tickets to other gamesD. have applie d for tickets to the men’s 100m final37. In order to solve the problem, the Locog ____.A. required the holders to return the ticketsB. allowed the holders to apply for another ticketC. would charge the discrepancy for changing the ticketsD. offered to change the tickets without any extra cost38. The underlined word ―it‖ (Paragraph 3 ) refers to ____.A. LocogB. the ticketing mistakeC. the Olympic GamesD. the additional cost39. How many ticket holders will have to change their tickets?A. 200.B. 10,000.C. 20,000.D. 30,000.40. Which of the following is true according to the text?A. The synchronized swimming is the hottest of the Olympics.B. Thousands of ticket holders refused to change their tickets.C. The men’s 100m final will take place on August 5, 2012.D. The number of tickets for synchronized swimming is 10,000.DIn the more and more competitive service industry, it is no longer enough to promise customer sa tisfaction. Today, customer ―delight‖ is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share. It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number of researchers, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly tell tales of worse to up to 20 people. Interestingly, 80 percent of people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal.New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the ―phone rage‖— caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off in mid-conversation or left waiting for long periods.―Many people do not like talking to machines,‖ says Dr, Storey, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at City University Business School. ―Banks, for example, encourage staff at call c enters to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with them. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust them —the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branc h manager.‖Recommended ways of creating customer delight include: under-promising and over-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two); replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in a gift coupon as an unexpected ―thank you‖ to regular customers; and always returning calls, even when they are complaints.Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them that delighting passengers is an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems. For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about bookings and flight times. The Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service.Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used slogans such as ―we do as we please‖. On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk of disappointment.41. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that _______.A. complaining customers are hard to satisfyB. unsatisfied customers receive better serviceC. satisfied customers catch more attentionD. well-treated customers promote business42.
