龙舟(或称龙船)是指中国、越南、日本、琉球的龙形舟,也是中国和琉球端午节竞赛活动时使用的人力船只。

龙舟上画着龙的形状或把舟做成龙的形状。

龙舟不单是传统中华文化的一部分,从其引伸发展出来的龙舟竞赛现已发展为体育活动。

由于龙舟竞赛被推广成为端午节龙舟赛、元宵节舞龙(也称舞龙灯、耍龙灯)及二月二龙头节是大东亚龙文化区重要的民间活动,因为中华文化的传播,也因为东南亚华人多,如新加坡、马来西亚等华人区流行。

提起龙舟的起源,人们自然就会想起纪念屈原,又盛传龙船源于湖南西北部沅陵之说。

在反映中华龙舟文化的博大精深和沅陵龙船历史渊源的《沅陵千年龙船》一书里,收编了104篇作家、学者对沅陵龙船的精辟论述。

这些文章科学、系统地论证了沅陵传统龙舟的起源,记录了沅陵龙舟活动的参赛规模、船建等情况。

沅陵龙舟起源于5000年前,所以比纪念屈原的说法要早3000多年。
