高中英语复习资料 Book 6 Unit 1 综合训练

Book 6 Unit 1 综合训练A卷——主题阅读专攻练AWhen the Apollo astronauts (宇航员) landed on the Moon in 1969, millions of people were rather sad. The person to blame (责备) for this was an artist named Chesley Bonestell. For many years, Bonestell had been creating beautifully detailed paintings of the Moon and planets. Viewers of his artwork were unhappy because the real Moon did not look like Bonestell's pictures of it.As a space artist, Bonestell tried to make his drawings look exciting and as true as the Moon is. He worked closely with astronomers and scientists to get the most up-to-date scientific information available. But in the 1940s and 1950s, no one had ever seen another planet up close. Yet Bonestell's paintings looked so real that some people thought they were photographs.Even though Bonestell was interested in astronomy, he did not start out as a space artist. As a young man he studied architecture —the art and science of designing and making buildings. In 1938 Bonestell became a special effects artist in Hollywood. It was here that he learned he could improve his paintings by following the methods used in the movies. In 1944, a popular magazine published a series of Bonestell's paintings of the planet Saturn. He drew Saturn as if it were seen by someone standing on each of the planet's moons. The results were dazzling. Within a few years, Bonestell's artwork was appearing regularly in magazines and books on astronomy and space flight. Many of Bonestell's artworks had been right all along. But the biggest surprise was the Moon.Someone asked Bonestell what he was thinking when he saw the first pictures from the Moon. “I thought how wrong I was!” he said. “My mountains were sharp (陡峭的), and they aren't on the Moon.”But he shouldn't have felt bad. No space artist had ever before taken so many people to so many faraway worlds. In the years just before the first manned space flights, Bonestell's artworks prepared people for the amazing space adventure to come.

ANot all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares(噩梦).Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce,or possibly wipe out the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing(释放)chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out.The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldier s’troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.“Some m emories can ruin pe ople’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” sai d Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.“This could reliev e a lot of that suffering.”But those who are against the research say that maybe the pill can change people’s memories and that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure whether we want to wipe those memories out, ”sa id Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.1. The passage is mainly about .A.a new medical inventionB.a new research on the pillC.a way of wiping out painful memoriesD.an argument about the research on the pill2. The drug tested on people can .A.cause the brain to fix memoriesB.stop people remembering bad experiencesC.stop the body producing certain chemicalsD.wipe out the emotional effects of memories3. You may probably read the passage in .A.a guidebook B.a medical magazineC.a textbook D.science fictionBFew of us hav en’t read Cinderella, the story of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it,but there is a hidden Cinderella in everyone’s heart—we all wish we could achieve recognition or success after a period of obscurity (默默无闻)or neglect.Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenage pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.Joey is everything the rest of the boys in her class are not—kind, handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey’s paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked (邪恶的)stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn’t get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.“The movie takes the Cinderella fairytale as its jumping off point,”writes movie critic Amber Wilkinson.“The focus is firmly on following your dream.”4. The first paragraph is mainly to .A.build interest and lead us to Mary’s secret dreamB.remind us why Cinderella is so popular all the yearsC.inform us of the main topic of the whole passageD.tell us how interesting the fairy tale Cinderella is5. What can we infer from the passage?A.Joey is just like other boys in Mary’s class.B.Mary’s mother influences her a lot in singing.C.Not many people have a dream to be realized.D.The MP3 player helps Joey in finding Mary.6.The passage is mainly .A.an introduction to a filmB.a review about a filmC.an essay about dreamsD.an advertisement of Cinderella7.According to the passage,Another Cinderella Story .A.follows Cinderella with nothing newB.pays more attention to the looks of the actorsC.encourages young people to follow their dreamsD.focuses more on materialism than other filmsCA year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused.“Wait a minute,” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare,a period I spent searching for briefcase(公文包) and standing before my full length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr.Davis.”Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came,my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there.I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12yearold boy.I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves.I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.“All right then,” I said.“Okay, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell.“Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions,I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.8.The author took the job to teach writing because .A.he wanted to be respectedB.he had written some storiesC.he wanted to please his fatherD.he had dreamed of being a teacher9.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 2?A.He would be aggressive in his first class.B.He was wellprepared for his first class.C.He got nervous upon the arrival of his first class.D.He waited long for the arrival of his first class.10.Before he started his class, the author asked the students to . A.write down their suggestions on the paper cardsB.cut maple leaves out of the construction paperC.cut some cards out of the construction paperD.write down their names on the paper cards11.What did the students do when the author started his class?A.They began to talk.B.They stayed silent.C.They raised their hands.D.They shouted to be heard.DI have a cousin who’s a farmer. If you saw him on market day with his old boots and worn hat, you might think he was a tramp(流浪汉).But he’s either buying or selling cattle for thousands of pounds. He does n’t have a l uxurious lifestyle, but the farmhouse, dozens of acres of land, machinery, cattle, chickens and crops must be worth a fortune. You might describe him as a wealthy man, but he doesn’t look it.My father owned a shop selling newspapers, cigarettes, birthday cards, toys, books and magazines. The shop provided a comfortable life for us,but we weren’t rich. The only luxury was that my father owned a car when most people in our town couldn’t afford one, apart from professionals such as doctors and lawyers. My point is that appearances can be deceptive. You often can’t tell the rich from the way they look. I once met Richard Branson, the Virgin Airlines tycoon(巨头). He’d flown a balloon across the Atlantic and landed in the Irish sea. When he was rescued,he was wearing jeans,a Tshirt and a sneaker. You’d never have guessed he was a multimillionaire.Andrew Bruce, the 11th Earl(伯爵) of Elgin, invited a group of press people to his luxurious home in Fife,Scotland. His forefather, the 7th Earl of Elgin was famous for removing and transporting to Britain priceless sculptures from the Parthenon,a very famous temple in Greece. The socalled Elgin Marbles can be seen in the British Museum. The Ea rl’s c astle was freezing cold, despite a fire burning in the hearth(壁炉).He explained to us,“I’m sorry it’s so cold, but you should know that a gentleman’s house is always cold.”There you have it:wealth doesn’t always bring comfort.12.People might think the writer’s co usin was a tramp because .A.he was always wandering on the marketB.he was poorly dressedC.he begged foods in a small townD.he sold cattle for nothing13.Which of the following is true of the writer’s father?A.He smoked cigarettes.B.He was a professional.C.He lived a luxurious life.D.He had a car.14.What does the underlined word “deceptive” p robably mean?A.Misleading. Others come and stay forever. Think about your closest friends. How long have you known each other? Some people say that their spouse (husband or wife) or family member is their best friend. Others say they have known their closest friends for many years. And some great friends haven’t known each other all that long, but know right away that there is a connection, or bond(结合力,联结), between them. Could it be that there is a twin spirit (someone very similar to you) out there for each of us?What turns a stranger into a friend? Do you know right away if you are going to like someone? Some people think that any stranger can become a friend if they spend enough time together. That may be true for some people. But one thing most of us agree on is that true friendships seem to happen when people have something in common. Perhaps we see a part of ourselves in our friends.Maybe seeing the good in them helps us to see the good in us as well.根据短文判断正(T)误(F)。

A★★☆☆☆September 30, 2011Skunk Scooters100 Caldwell StreetOmaha, NE 68102To Whom It May Concern:On August 27, 2011, I ordered a Skunk Scooter from your website. I was very excited when the motorcycle arrived because I bought it with the money I saved from doing part-time jobs over the summer vacation. Unfortunately, I have experienced several problems with my Skunk Scooter.First of all, the front wheel always shakes from side to side, making the scooter difficult to control. Also, it makes an unpleasant sound as the wheel works. The sound is much louder than a car engine. The instructions say we should tighten the screws (螺丝). My mom and I did that. However, it did not help at all.In addition, something is wrong with the handlebars (手把). According to your website, they can be easily raised to a height of thirty-six inches. This does not seem to be true of the Skunk Scooter I received. The handlebars are set at thirty inches, and they cannot be raised or lowered. It appears that the knob (球形把手) that is used to change the height is pushed into the handlebars, which makes it impossible to turn in either direction. It is extremely uncomfortable to ride the motorbike with itshandlebars in such a low position.Although you advertised the Skunk Scooter as “the quickest, coolest scooter on the planet,” it makes me feel very disg runtled. I am expecting that the repair of the scooter would be done at the earliest or else I want my money back. I know that you would not want customers to keep broken products. Therefore, I would like to thank you in advance for taking the trouble to solve the problem.Sincerely,Natasha Greene21. The text is probably written by a _____.A. repairmanB. shopkeeperC. studentD. salesgirl22. What’s wrong with the front wheel of the scooter?A. Several screws on it are missing.B. It is not as big as the website says.C. It keeps shaking and makes a noise.D. It cannot turn as fast as the back one.23. The underlined word “disgruntled” in the text probably means “_____”.A. excitedB. confusedC. proudD. dissatisfied24. Natasha wrote the letter mainly to _____.A. demand after-sales serviceB. send her congratulationsC. express thankfulnessD. make an apologyB★★★☆☆Recently, a painting of actress Elizabeth Taylor, which was drawn by American artist and filmmaker Andy Warhol, sold for US $63 million. Another simple black-and-white image of a Coca-Cola bottle sold for US $35 million. But the all-timerecord for a Warhol painting is $100 million for a piece tit led “Eight Elvises”. What’s amazing is not that the pieces sold for so much, but the fact that they are not what you would call traditional art. They are “pop art”, art based on simple images of things and people from advertising, movies, music and day-to-day life.Born in the 1920s, Warhol grew up mostly separated from other children due to (由于) health problems. He spent a lot of his time alone drawing and then went on to study art in college. He began his career as a commercial (商业的) artist, creating pictures for magazine articles and newspaper ads. That inspired him to experiment with pop art and he hosted America’s first pop art exhibition in the 1960s. The show met with a lot of discussion with some people saying that what he was doing was not art.Warhol followed his first works with a series we are all familiar with —paintings of Coca-Cola bottles, Brillo soap pad boxes, and portraits (肖像) of famous people. Soon after, Warhol stopped creating his own artwork. Instead, he had assistants and other artists create them at his studio called “The Factory”. Warhol wanted to show the world that art doesn’t have to be complex or original; it can be created by anyone using ordinary things.Today, Warhol’s work is unmistakable in its uniqu eness. No matter how you may feel about his work, one thing cannot be argued. He introduced the world to a whole new art form, inspiring future generations of artists, and eventually becoming one of the most famous and successful pop art artists in the world.25. Which of the following pictures sold for $100 million?26. During his childhood, Warhol _____.A. drew pictures for magazinesB. always lived a lonely lifeC. showed no interest in artD. liked to paint and dance27. Calling his studio “The Factory”, Warhol tried to show _____.A. his studio was as big as a factoryB. pop art is different from traditional artC. artists prefer to work in a factoryD. art should be simple and easy to produce28. What would be the best title for the text?A. Andy Warhol’s world of pop artB. Women in the pop art movementC. A fun pop-art self-portrait for kidsD. Popular paintings by Andy WarholC★★★☆☆John was part of my childhood growing up in the 1970s and a link to sunny, fun-filled days spent on the beach at Bangor in Northern Ireland where we went forour summer holidays. To many, he was a mystery. Every afternoon John would wander to the end of the pier (码头) where he fed the seagulls and delighted in the sound of their excited cries as they flew around his head.Often I asked my family questions regarding John. Eventually I gave up as no one could tell me anything about him. As I grew up, my visits to the beach became less frequent, and my memories of John buried in a child’s imagination.Last year memories came flooding back as I walked along the coastline, where I noticed a lady feeding the seagulls on the pier, and I decided to introduce myself. Then I came to know that the lady was John’s daughter, and after John left this world she carried out the ritual (惯例), which had held such importance for her father. In some strange way I felt we shared a bond, each needing to remember. In return, Lucy told me of John’s life, his days in the British Navy (海军) during World War I and how he almost lost hope when his ship was attacked by a German U-boat in the North Sea and he found himself in a lifeboat with five others.Close to death, he thought he heard the sound of wings. He put up his hands, only to catch a seagull that had landed on the side of the boat. The seagull saved the lives of the six men as it was used to catch fish, which kept them alive until they re ached land. This period of John’s life was one he never talked about. But the ritual he first performed as a young man remained a part of him until he died. Now I visit Lucy as often as I can, just to chat or very often walk along the beach to the pier end. We enjoy the comfortable silence, each lost in special memories.29. Seeing John feeding the seagulls, the author might feel _____.A. proudB. worriedC. curiousD. guilty30. Why did the author introduce herself to the lady?A. She wanted to make more friends.B. She was also fond of feeding seagulls.C. She was told the lady was John’s daughter.D. She was attracted by what the lady was doing.31. We can infer from the text that John _____.A. once served in both World WarsB. was a man with a grateful heartC. spent his childhood in BangorD. joined the navy in the 1970s32. What does the author mainly tell us in the text?A. She expressed her thanks to a seagull that saved her life.B. She told us the story of how she made friends with a lady.C. She shared with us her memories of a man who fed seagulls.D. She talked about her childhood spent on the beach at Bangor.D★★★★☆A man pulls into the parking lot, turns off the engine, and sits for a minute feeling anxious about the next two hours. An important client (客户) has invited him to an open house in celebration of their new downtown office. He hates these things. He doesn’t know what to say, he doesn’t know anyone except the client, and he alw ays feels like he’s trying not to look lost. He sinks deeper into the seat, making a tough decision about when to leave.Casual (随意的) conversation happens at least a dozen times a day. Yet for some of us, many occasions that involve small talk don’t ever get any easier, and may even increase anxiety and cause some people to feel on edge about social events, business lunches, and chance meetings with neighbors. Unfortunately, as we are suffering our own discomfort, our neighbors, friends, and workmates generally consider us distant, cold, and proud. If your conversations disappear almost as soon as they’ve begun, or if you’re an unwilling participant at social and business get-togethers, you’ll need some skills. Just get involved in a meaningful dialogue, try your best to introduce an interesting topic when there’s a silence, and develop business friendships whenever and wherever possible.Small talk isn’t the lowly stepchild of real conversation. Without it, you rarely get to the real conversation. Small talk is the icebreaker that clears the way for adeeper conversation. People who excel at small talk are experts at making others feel included, valued, and comfortable. And that goes a long way toward furthering a business relationship, or making a friend.Don’t be fooled into thinking that all those other people you see who are smiling and happily chatting come by it naturally. Sure, some are natural-born talkers, but most have had to work at it. They’ve practiced, attended cour ses and read books. You don’t think so? Believe me, I know. I used to be a single-minded, unsociable engineer — no one has worse skills than I once did. I have become an expert by learning some skills and then practicing them. It’s that simple.33. According to Paragraph 2, those who are poor at casual conversation _____.A. are sometimes considered unfriendlyB. believe small talk is a waste of timeC. have few chances to meet strangersD. feel comfortable when they are with neighbors34. What does the author stress in Paragraph 4?A. The important functions of small talk.B. The difficulties of starting a deep conversation.C. The advantages of small talk over real conversation.D. The differences between small talk and real conversation.35. In the last paragraph, the author mentions his own experience to _____.A. show a good method of improving social skillsB. prove some people are born brilliant speakersC. show his achievements in social activitiesD. prove conversation skills can be acquired第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Unit1 同步检测Ⅰ.阅读理解Anyone who’s heard the story of the three little pigs might have some reservations about the use of wood as a building material. But architects and engineers are reusing wood as a quick and eco-friendly solution to modern construction—and not just for pioneer-style log cabins. The recent completion of an eightstorey wooden office block in Austria and a ninestorey housing block in London shows how the “wooden building” is fast becomin g a reality. The LCT One building is a building made from both wood and concrete and designed by Austrian architectural firm Cree.Cree claims that building the glulam (胶合层木)elements of the building off-site in advance cuts construction time by half, guarantees quality and reduces the buildings carbon footprint.Concrete gives off nearly its own weight in carbon dioxide as it’s produced;the raw material for wooden skyscrapers,by contrast, literally grows on trees and absorbs carbon from the air as it does so.Nabih Tahan,an architect, said: “ We want to make buildings like car companies make cars,or computer companies make computers, using an industrial process and a system’s approach. To get good performance out of buildings, you can’t keep making them wildly piece by piece on site, cutting things in the rain. You need to design them right and have a stepbystep organized process.”British architects Waugh Thistleton calculated that they avoided producing nearly 125 tons of c arbon dioxide in building what is so far the world’s tallest modern wood structure, the ninestorey Stadthaus building.Architects are now competing to build everhigher, evergreener wooden buildings.Already construction has begun on a 10floor residential block made from LCT in Melbourne,Australia. However, building regulations threaten to nip the growth of wooden structures in the bud. Many countries restrict the maximum height of wooden buildings. In Russia the limit is just four floors,in Canada i t’s six, while in the U.S.and China it’s a mere five.【文章大意】这是一篇说明文,主要介绍了建筑师们现在重新利用木头来建造房屋的情况,并说明了该种房屋节省原料以及具有环保的作用等。

Well, maybe it’s time that you learn more about the Mayan Calendar2018.rGfoFmVdNKWhat exactly is the Mayan Calendar 2018 and who are the Mayans? The Mayans were a group of people who lived thousands of years ago in what is now Mexico. They knew so much about the world and the universe that they invented the Long Count Calendar. The Mayan Calendar 2018 is actuallyjust part of the calendar. The most interesting thing about this calendar is that it seems to predict a great catastrophe that will happen in the year 2018. According to it, there will be an end to the existing era and a new one will begin. rGfoFmVdNKOne misunderstanding about the Mayan Calendar 2018 is that it points to an end of the world. While the calendar ends in2018, it doesn’t actually indicate that the world will not exist in the year 2018. In fact, instead of referring to a real disaster that will occur, it refers to the birth of a new period, the beginning of another circle of the calendar. rGfoFmVdNKWhether you believe that the Mayan Calendar 2018 points to a real global disaster or not, it would be best if you will keep yourself informed. Troubles may arise when body language is misunderstood. rGfoFmVdNKGood listening skills clear the way to a clear message while bad listening skills create barriers (障碍> which can confuse or stop the message. Good listeners can use body language by nodding occasionally to show interest and understanding, make eye contact with the speaker, repeat some of the words and feelings, and summarize what they have heard.
