Charles St-OngeAsh WednesdayFebruary 25, 2004The 10 CommandmentsIntroductionMartin Luther wrote the following as the reason why he wrote his Small Catechism, or “Little Instruction Book”:The deplorable, miserable conditions which I recently observed when visiting the parishes have constrained and pressed me to put this catechism of Christian doctrine into this brief, plain and simple form. How pitiable, so help me God, were the things I saw: the common man knows practically nothing of Christian doctrine, and many of the pastors are almost entirely incompetent and unable to teach. Yet all the people are supposed to be Christians, have been baptized, and receive the Holy Sacrament, even though they don’t know the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed or the 10 Commandments, and live like poor animals of the barnyard or pigpen.Those who refuse to learn are to be told that they are denying Christ and do not belong to him.They are not to be admitted to the Sacrament, accepted as sponsors at baptism, or allowed to exercise Christian liberty in any way.The more things change, the more things stay the same. The Church in North America has, sadly, forgotten its calling and stopped “teaching sound doctrine,” as Paul kept admonishing his congregations and pastors to do, over and over again. Dear brothers and sisters – friends – let it NOT be so among us! I want it to be said of St. Mark’s, not only in our community, but throughout the city and throughout the Synod, “Behold, how seriously they take their faith and their Christ!” To that end, tonight we start a series of sermons on the six parts of the Small Catechism.The first part might seem like an obvious thing to everyone: the 10 Commandments. Who doesn’t know the 10 Commandments, right? Well, do you? In polls conducted throughout North America it was discovered that very few people can give more than 1 or 2 of the commandments. What used to be common knowledge has become a lost or hidden treasure.Let’s start by putting the commandments in context. You’ll find them in the 20th chapter of the Second Book of Moses, Exodus. The commandments are given AFTER the Lord has rescued the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. Why is that important? Because the commandments are given AFTER God has taken the initiative to save his people, not before. The rescue from Egypt was undeserved. The slaves weren’t rescued because they OBEYED the commandments. They were given the commandments by a God who had already powerfully displayed his love for them.NumberingNow, we say “10” commandments. In fact, the Hebrew simply says “10” words or phrases, and they aren’t numbered. Modern Jews number them one way, the Church up until a few centuries ago numbered them another way, and modern Protestants number them yet another away. Lutherans stick with the traditional church numbering – why fix it if it ain’t broken? That means that the word not to make idols is considered part of the 1st commandment to have no other gods. So “You Shall Not Murder” is the 5th Commandment.Curb, Mirror and GuideAs Lutherans, we see the 10 Commandments as serving three purposes. The first is to create law and order in society. The commandments are a “curb.” The last seven commandments in particular serve thatpurpose – obeying father and mother, not murdering, not stealing, etc. Every culture on the face of the earth has those commandments written on their hearts, without ever having seen Judge Moore’s monument in Alabama. No culture on the earth permits wanton murder or theft.The second purpose is the one I want to focus on tonight. The commandments are a “mirror.” Stare into a mirror long enough, and you’ll get a good idea what you look like. Stare at the 10 commandments honestly, and you’ll discover what YOU really are like. A non-Christian, looking honestly at the 10 commandments, will realize they have not kept them. A Christian looking honestly at them will see that they are constantly tempted to break them, and occasionally they actually do. The Commandments, when acting like a mirror, reveal that we no longer have the perfection and holiness of God.You see, it’s not enough to “keep” the commandments outwardly. We have to keep them inwardly to, in all our thoughts and desires. Consider the story of Jesus and the Rich Young Man:(Luke 18:18-26) And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”…And Jesus said to him, “…You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ” The ruler said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;and come, follow me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. Jesus, looking at him with sadness, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”That’s Jesus using the 10 Commandments as a mirror. The ruler thought he’d kept the commandments well enough. He had waited till marriage to have sex. He hadn’t killed anyone or even been in a fight. He hadn’t stolen from anyone, except maybe downloading some music off Kazaa or Grokster. “Oh,” Jesus said, “That’s not enough. You haven’t even BEGUN to fulfill the commandments!” Consider how Jesus interpreted the commandments:9 and 10: You Shall Not Covet, or DesireFirst, there’s what NOT to do: NO SCHEMING. No trying to get what is someone else’s, whether that be girlfriend, wife, car, house, job, whatever. Okay maybe you haven’t ACTIVELY schemed. But then, there’s what TO do. The 9th and 10th commandment entail helping your neighbor KEEP their job, their house, and their spouse. How ‘bout now? Have you sought out ways to help your neighbor keep what is their? Then there’s what to THINK. To keep these commandments, you can’t even THINK about coveting something.8: You Shall Not Give False TestimonyWhat not to do: Don’t lie, betray, slander, or hurt someone’s reputation. What TO do: defend your neighbor, speak up for him or her, explain everything in the kindest way. Do we always do this? How often have you thought of the WORST case scenario, instead of the BEST case scenario? Someone misses and appointment or a date, or the car you’ve just bought dies on you, or your hear some gossip about someone. Do you think, “well, maybe they got stuck in traffic” or “maybe the car salesman forgot to check the engine” or “all gossip isn’t true.” If you’ve ever thought the worst instead of the best, you’ve broken this commandment.7. You Shall Not StealWhat not to do: don’t take your neighbor’s money or possessions. What TO do: help your neighbor improve and protect his possessions and income. Our neighbors aren’t always visible. Our neighbors are actors and musicians whose music and movies we steal when we don’t buy them legitimately. They arefriends and neighbors who depend upon society to help them out, but can’t get help because we’ve fudged on our taxes. There are all sorts of ways to break this commandment.6. You Shall Not Commit AdulteryWhat TO do: comes first with this commandment. Keep your marriage strong, and help keep other marriages strong. What not to do: don’t sleep with someone else’s husband or wife. Simple right? I mean, this is really an easy commandment to keep, right? I wish it were so. I’m going to be honest with you from God’s word: if you are living together with someone who hasn’t made a lifelong commitment to you – we usually call it marriage – you’re sleeping with someone else’s husband or wife. Jesus REALLY upped the anti on this commandment too – he said anyone who even THINKS of sleeping with someone else has broken it. Pretty high standard.5. You Shall Not MurderWhat not to do: don’t kill hurt or harm your neighbor. It’s not enough not to kill them. Don’t fight with them, don’t punch their lights out. God has instituted authorities to look after that – police, armies, and executioners. What TO do: help your neighbor stay healthy. Help them stay out of trouble. That’s a tough one. Jesus upped the standard on this one too – anyone who even HATES his neighbor and tells him off has broken this commandment.4. Honor Your Father and Your MotherWhat not to do: don’t make life miserable for your father, mother, teachers, pastor, police, firefighters, even politicians. Respect them, because their position has been given to them by God. Even insulted a politician? Just broke the 4th commandment.Now we transition from the commands that have to do with our neighbors, to the commands that have to do with God. The first three commandments are really the more serious ones, if we consider the commandments as a mirror. Secular society doesn’t care about the first three.3. Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holyHere’s a biggy. To understand this commandment you need to remember that Jesus declared himself to be the Lord of the Sabbath. He IS the Sabbath. So anytime you spend with him – in worship with the Body of Christ, receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord – you are obeying this commandment. Stay away from worship, and you’ve broken the commandment, no matter what time or day the service is.2. You Shall Not Misuse the Name of the Lord Your GodWhat NOT to do: don’t lie by God’s name or in God’s name. Don’t do in the name of God what you know is wrong or false. Don’t say God said something is okay when it’s most clearly not.1. You Shall Have No Other GodsNO other gods. Which means we better be sure what God we are worshipping. We aren’t free to say “God is God is God,” or “a god by any other name would be just as good.” Be sure who you’re worshipping.If you’re honest – if – this list will have left you utterly depressed. You may have kept the commandments as far as what NOT to do, maybe even as far as WHAT to do. But NO ONE has kept them where it really counts – up here (head) and in here (heart). So is that the point of these commandments? To show how holy God is and how useless we are? Yes and no. Listen to one of the late theologians of our Synod, Franz Pieper (paraphrased):The judgment [of God] strikes at what lies deepest in the heart of man, the spiritual self-conceit, which in poverty, disgrace and misfortune…regards itself as the first. [By givingyou these commandments] God takes all the arrogance out of you and forbids you to setyourself above [the worst sinner], even if you meet Abraham, David, Sarah or Mary’sstandard. But at the same time, God will not leave you in despair. In Christ, he will notlet you set yourself below any saint, even if you are Pilate, Herod, Sodom andGomorroah.When the 10 Commandments work, we turn to Christ for forgiveness. We realize we are not first; we deserve to be last. So like a woman fleeing from a burning house we rush, we push our way into the arms of Christ to be forgiven. To be pronounced clean. That’s why the church exists. It’s the ONLY reason the Church exists – to condemn where necessary, but at all times to be ready with the forgiveness of God for those who recognize their sin and treat it seriously. For the haughty and arrogant the Church will always be a place of condemnation. But for those seeking mercy, here they will find it at all times. Here they will find a God ready and willing to forgive sins for the sake of his Son.Next week we will look at the Apostles’ Creed, and how the Lord still provides us with all our needs, has forgiven us our sins, equipped us for the living of the Christian life in this world.Amen.。

The market share rate of multi-functional and compound UFD raised up. The second price reduction storm broken out. The UFD market became an oligarch monopoly industrial market. Some marketing experts considered that the UFD market was closing to the end of its life cycle.
