Let me start by sharing a story of Richard Rochester, one of the most successful businessmen in Britain. ⑰Years ago, I was given a task of organizing a conference in the south of England. I chose a five-star hotel owned by Rochester as the venue. Susan, the receptionist, helped me arrange everything perfectly. Once when we were chatting, I asked Susan if she’d ever met Mr. Rochester. She said “Yes.” Shortly after Mr. Rochester b ought the hotel, he made an appointment to see the hotel manager, when he arrived, the first person he met was Susan who was cleaning thecarpet. He chatted with Susan for 30 minutes before keeping his appointment with the manager. ⑱He spent all day at the hotel talking with each member of the staff from the top guy to the lady who cleaned the toilets. Six months later, ⑲Mr. Rochester paid another visit. Susan had been promoted to receptionist, but he recognized her immediately and addressed her by name. He even remembered that she had a little girl and what her name was. Now I don’t believe that Richard Rochester has that good memory. He must have written a lot of notes after his first visit and read them over again before that second visit. ⑳It’s time-consuming, but it shows the importance he places on human relationships. I think that’s one of the secrets of his success.。

Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.“You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.”Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit?Trost thinks so.“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says. And you’ll never be without something to read.4.Why did BART start the kiosk program?A.To promote the local culture.B.To discourage phone use.C.To meet passengers’ needs.D.To reduce its running costs.5.How are the stories categorized in the kiosk?A.By popularity.B.By length.C.By theme.D.By language.6.What has Trost been doing recently?A.Organizing a story contest.B.Doing a survey of customers.C.Choosing a print publisher.D.Conducting interviews with artists.7.What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future?A.It will close down.B.Its profits will decline.C.It will expand nationwide.D.Its ridership will increase. We all know fresh is best when it comes to food. However, most produce at the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before reaching the table. While farmer’s markets are a solid choice to reduce the journey, Babylon Micro-Farm (BMF) shortens it even more.BMF is an indoor garden system. It can be set up for a family. Additionally, it could serve a larger audience such as a hospital, restaurant or school. The innovative design requires little effort to achieve a reliable weekly supply of fresh greens.Specifically, it’s a farm that relies on new technology. By connecting through the Cloud, BMF is remotely monitored. Also, there is a convenient app that provides growing data in real time. Because the system is automated, it significantly reduces the amount of water needed to grow plants. Rather than watering rows of soil, the system provides just the right amount to each plant. After harvest, users simply replace the plants with a new pre-seeded pod (容器) to get the next growth cycle started. Moreover, having a system in the same building where it’s eaten means zero emissions (排放) from transporting plants from soil to salad. In addition, there’s no need for pesticides and other chemicals that pollute traditional farms and the surrounding environment.BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives. About half of them walk or bike to work. Inside the office, they encourage recycling and waste reduction by limiting garbage cans and avoiding single-use plastic. “We are passionate about reducing waste, carbon and chemicals in our environment,” said a BMF employee.8.What can be learned about BMF from paragraph 1?A.It guarantees the variety of food.B.It requires day-to-day care.C.It cuts the farm-to-table distance.D.It relies on farmer’s markets.9.What information does the convenient app offer?A.Real-time weather changes.B.Current condition of the plants.C.Chemical pollutants in the soil.D.Availability of pre-seeded pods.10.What can be concluded about BMF employees?A.They have a great passion for sports.B.They are devoted to community service.C.They are fond of sharing daily experiences.D.They have a strong environmental awareness.11.What does the text mainly talk about?A.BMF’s major strengths.B.BMF’s general management.C.BMF’s global influence.D.BMF’s technical standards.Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book byCatriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革).In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now-several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI-the technology companies and world leaders-so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with Al to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.12.What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean?A.If read by someone poorly educated.B.If reviewed by someone ill-intentioned.C.If written by someone less competent.D.If translated by someone unacademic.13.What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text?A.It is packed with complex codes.B.It adopts a down-to-earth writing style.C.It provides step-by-step instructions.D.It is intended for AI professionals.14.What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development?A.Observe existing regulations on it.B.Reconsider expert opinions about it.C.Make joint efforts to keep it under control.D.Learn from prior experience to slow it down.15.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To recommend a book on AI.B.To give a brief account of AI history.C.To clarify the definition of AI.D.To honor an outstanding AI expert.Overtourism Is For Real: How Can Y ou Help?Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 16 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today’s world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions tominimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they’re special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 17●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it’s actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. 18 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination’s lesser-known sights?● 19 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You’ll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 20 You may be amazed how much closer you’ll feel to the people there.A.Visit during off-peak times.B.So, should we stop traveling?C.Travel for you and no one else.D.Can overtourism be avoided then?E.You can still find relatively undiscovered places.F.You’ll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.G.Consider giving back to the communities you’re visiting.二、完形填空When I decided to buy a house in Europe ten years ago, I didn't think too long. 2023高考新高考2卷英语听力全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Super Duper Listening Test for Big KidsHiya, friends! It's me, your pal Billy. Today, I wanna tell you all about this super cool listening test that the big kids have to take. You know how us little kiddos have to take tests at school sometimes? Well, the big kids who are almost done with their last year of high school have to take a really important test called the Gaokao. Now, the Gaokao has been around for a really long time, but this year, they added a brand new section that's all about listening! Isn't that exciting? The big kids have to listen to people talking in English and then answer questions about what they heard. Whoa, that sounds kinda tricky, doesn't it?But you know what? I think it's awesome that they get to practice their listening skills. After all, listening is a super important part of learning a language. If you can't understand what people are saying, how are you gonna communicate withthem? That's like trying to play a game without knowing the rules!Okay, so here's the really cool part: the listening section has two parts! Part one is all about conversations. The big kids will hear people chatting about all sorts of stuff, like making plans, ordering food, or even talking about their hobbies. Then, they have to answer questions about the conversations they just heard.Part two is where things get even more interesting. It's all about listening to longer passages, like news reports, lectures, or even radio shows! The big kids have to listen closely and answer questions about the main ideas, details, and even the speaker's opinions or attitudes. Wow, that sounds like a lot of work, doesn't it?But you know what? I bet the big kids are gonna do great! After all, they've been studying English for years and years. And practicing their listening skills is gonna help them so much when they go off to college or start working.Imagine being able to understand people from all over the world, or watching movies and TV shows without needing subtitles. How awesome would that be? And who knows, maybeone day they'll even be able to travel to different countries and chat with people in English like it's no big deal! So, let's all give a big cheer for the big kids taking the listening section of the Gaokao this year. They're working super hard, and I know they're gonna rock it! And who knows, maybe in a few years, we'll be the ones taking that cool listening test. But for now, let's just keep practicing our listening skills by singing along to our favorite songs or playing fun listening games.Listening is the key to unlocking all sorts of adventures and making new friends from all over the world. So, let's all give it our best shot, okay? Alright, my friends, that's all for now. Time for me to go play with my toys. But remember, keep those ears wide open and ready to listen!篇2The 2023 Gaokao English Listening TestHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th grade. I wanted to tell you all about the big English listening test that high school seniors had to take this year called the Gaokao. It was a really important test that helped decide what colleges they could go to.My big sister Lily was one of the students who took the English listening part of the Gaokao this year. She studied so hard for months! Whenever I would go into her room, she had her headphones on listening to English recordings over and over again. Sometimes she would make me listen too and ask me questions to practice. At first I thought it was boring, but then I started to get better at understanding what they were saying. The exam had four different sections – Interviews, Passages, Compound Dictation, and Listening Comprehension. Lily said the Interviews part was kind of strange. They played recordings of people being interviewed and asked questions about details like their job, opinions, and experiences. The speakers had different accents from all over the world which made it really difficult sometimes. The Passages section was similar, but instead of interviews there were just people giving speeches or lectures on different topics like science, culture, and current events. Lily had to answer comprehension questions about the main ideas and important details. She told me some of the topics were really obscure and used advanced vocabulary that even she didn't know! Then there was something called Compound Dictation where they read out a short passage line by line with pauses tolet the students write down what they heard. I can't imagine how hard it must be to get every single word right while listening and writing at the same time. Lily's hand was so sore after that part! But I think the Listening Comprehension questions were probably the hardest of all. The passages were super long –around 5 minutes each! And the questions got increasingly difficult, asking about things like the speaker's attitude, implied meanings, and relating different parts of the passage together. Lily had to concentrate so intensely and take meticulous notes while listening. After the test was over, Lily looked completely drained. But she was proud of herself for pushing through and doing her best.I have so much respect for her and all the Gaokao students after seeing how grueling and challenging the English listening exam was. I don't know if I'll be able to manage it when it's my turn in a few years!I really hope Lily gets a good score and is able to get into her dream university. Watching her work so diligently has motivated me to start practicing my English listening more too. Who knows, maybe I'll get to brag aboutacing the Gaokao English test when I'm in high school! But I've got a long way to go before then. Fornow, I'll just keep watching English movies and shows to get that listening practice in.Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm always happy to chat about the exciting world of standardized English exams. Just kidding...unless?篇3The Big Test for Big KidsWow, you won't believe what I heard about the Gaokao this year! The Gaokao is this huge test that all the old kids have to take to get into a university after high school. My big brother Xiao Ming is going to take it soon and he's been studying like crazy. He told me they made some big changes to the English listening part this year. In the past, they just had dialogues and passages that played over speakers, and you had to answer multiple choice questions about what you heard. Sounds pretty boring if you ask me!But now, they've made it way more interesting and interactive. There are different tasks you have to complete by listening carefully. My brother said one section has videos withpeople giving instructions, and you have to follow the instructions by doing things on your computer screen. How cool is that?Another part has phone conversations between two people, and you have to take notes on key details as you listen. Xiao Ming practiced this with our parents by calling them and pretending to make a reservation or schedule an appointment. I got to listen in a few times - it was like being a spy!The best new part has to be the virtual scenarios though. Xiao Ming described it as being like a video game, but without any graphics. You just hear the sounds and have to imagine what's happening. Then you get questions testing if you understood the situation correctly. He did one practice scenario that took place at a summer camp. You could hear kids running around, counselors blowing whistles, people splashing in the lake. At one point there was a thunderstorm and you had to identify the different sounds. Another time, there was an argument between some boys about a game of basketball. I'd love to try that myself! The really tough part is that everything is only played once. You can't replay the audio like we sometimes do in English classat school. So you have to concentrate super hard and use all your listening skills.I know it sounds incredibly difficult, but Xiao Ming says the new format is way more engaging than just sitting there answering questions. He thinks it will help students practice for actually using English in the real world when they get to university.Part of me is a tiny bit jealous that the English listening looks so fun and interactive now. But another part of me is glad I'm still young and don't have to worry about the Gaokao for many more years! It seems like a lot of pressure.Xiao Ming has been working so hard to prepare. He listens to English podcasts, watches movies and shows with English audio, and even reads children's books out loud to practice his listening comprehension. I try to help out by deliberately mumbling and speaking quickly when I talk to him. Then he has to say "Pardon?" and I repeat myself more clearly, just like in those dialogues they'll have on the test. Our parents are so proud of how diligently he's getting ready. They keep telling him that his score on that English listening section could make or break his chances of getting into his dream school. No pressure, right?I'm going to be cheering Xiao Ming on louder than anyone when he finally takes the Gaokao in a few weeks. Fingers crossed that all his practice with the new listening activities pays off! Maybe if he does really well, he can teach me some of the virtual scenario games. Those sound like a total blast. For now, I'll just have篇4The 2023 Gaokao Listening Exam Was So Cool!Hi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th grade. I just had to tell you all about the 2023 Gaokao English listening exam that I got to sit in on. It was so awesome! My cousin Jingjing is in her last year of high school, so she had to take the big Gaokao exam to try to get into a good university. I've always thought English was a really neat language, with funny words and those squiggly letters. I never imagined I'd get to experience a real English exam though!A few weeks ago, Jingjing asked me if I wanted to come watch her take the listening part of the English Gaokao exam as practice. She said it would be good experience for me to see what it's like. I was so excited! On exam day, I got up super early and my mom made me a big breakfast to get me ready. We met Jingjing at the exam hall, and I gave her a big high five for good luck. The teachers allowed me to sit in the back and watch. The exam started off kind of boring to be honest. They gave everyone instructions on filling out answer sheets and test procedure stuff like that. But then the listening tracks began! The first section had a bunch of short conversations between two people. After each one, there was a question about something they said or what the situation was. This helped test if you understood the key details.I tried reallyyyy hard to pay attention, but some of the conversations used slangs or idioms I didn't know. Like when they said "hit the hay", I thought they were talking about actually hitting hay, which didn't make sense! Grown-up English is tricky. The next part was my favorite though - it was a longer story about a girl and her pet hamster! The narrator spoke slowly and clearly, which made it easier for me to follow along. There were questions about the main events and details after every few paragraphs. The story was hilarious! Basically this girl's hamster kept escaping from its cage and causing all kinds of chaos around the house. I was cracking up picturing this tiny hamster outwitting the whole family. What a naughty little thing! After the mid-exam break, we moved onto passages about different topics like science, culture, and global issues. These were pretty difficult for me since they used more academic vocabulary. But I liked learning new things! One passage discussed environmental activism, which I thought was really cool. It talked about how young people were leading the charge to tackle climate change and protect nature. I decided then and there that I wanted to be an eco-warrior when I grow up!By the end, my brain was pretty fried from concentrating so hard. I had a whole new appreciation for how challenging English listening can be at that level. Jingjing looked tired but relieved when it was finally over.On the way home, I peppered her with questions about what certain words or phrases meant. I can't wait until I'm old enough to take the real Gaokao so I can put my English skills to the test!Even though a lot of the content was confusing for a kid like me, I had an awesome time witnessing the 2023 Gaokao listening exam. It really opened my eyes to the different varieties of English out there beyond what I learn at school.I'll never forget how incredible it felt being surrounded by so many students diligently working towards their academic dreams. Their determination inspired me to study hard too, so I can one day become a future English master! Who knows, maybe I'll even get to help write the Gaokao exams when I'm older. For now though, I'm just going to keep practicing my English skills through watching movies, reading books, and bugging Jingjing with millions of questions. Getting that first-hand Gaokao experience has me more motivated than ever before. Thanks for letting me share my little adventure! I hope you all continue working hard too towards your own dreams, whatever they may be. Study study study! Haha okay, I'll stop being cheesy now. Bai bai!篇5The Big Listening Test for Big KidsHi there! My name is Lily, and I'm a little girl in primary school. I'm really excited to tell you all about the big listening test that my older brother took this year. It's called the Gaokao English Listening Comprehension, and it's a super important test for all the big kids who want to go to university. My brother is in his last year of high school, and he's been studying really hard for the Gaokao. It's like the biggest exam ever! He has to take tests in all kinds of subjects, like math, Chinese, and English. The English part has a listening section, and that's what I'm going to talk about today. You see, in the listening test, they play lots of different recordings, and the big kids have to listen very carefully and answer questions about what they hear. It's kind of like when our teacher reads us a story and then asks us questions about it, but way harder! From what my brother told me, the recordings in the Gaokao English Listening Comprehension are all in English, and they can be about all sorts of different topics. Some of them are conversations between people, like two friends chatting or a teacher talking to a student. Others are lectures or talks, like a professor giving a speech or a news report. The big kids have to listen super carefully because the recordings can be pretty long and have lots of information. They need to understand not just the words but also the tone of voice, the emotions, and even the accents of the speakers. It's like a big game of "Who can listen the best?"My brother said that some of the questions are just about understanding the main idea or the key details of the recording. But others are trickier, like figuring out the speaker's attitude or opinion, or making inferences based on what's said (and what's not said!).It all sounds so complicated and grown-up to me. But my brother has been practicing a lot by listening to English podcasts, watching movies and TV shows in English, and doing practice tests. He even has a special app on his phone that helps him practice listening comprehension.I asked him if he was nervous about the big listening test, and he said he was a little bit, but also really excited to show off how much English he's learned over the years. He's been studying English since he was a little kid, just like me!I think it's so cool that the big kids get to take a test that's all about listening. In my opinion, listening is one of the mostimportant skills for learning a language. If you can't understand what people are saying, how can you communicate with them?I hope my brother does really well on the Gaokao English Listening Comprehension. I know he's worked so hard, and I'm super proud of him. Maybe one day, when I'm a big kid too, I'll get to take the same test and show off my amazing listening skills!Well, that's all I have to say about the big listening test for now. It's time for me to go practice my own English listening by watching my favorite cartoon in English. Wish me luck, and wish my brother luck too! We're both on our way to becoming English listening champions!篇6The 2023 Gaokao Was Really Hard!Hi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grader here in Beijing. A few weeks ago, my big sister Jingjing took the infamous gaokao - that's the huge test that all high school students in China have to take to get into university. She studied sooooo hard for months leading up to the exam. I felt really bad for her having to work that much! The gaokao has four main sections - Chinese, math, a combined test with things like politics and history, and English. Jingjing said the English listening part on the second test day was absolutely brutal this year! She's going to tell me all about how difficult it was. I'll share what she told me so you can get an idea of just how challenging the 2023 gaokao English listening was.First off, the passages they had to listen to were super long this year, like way longer than in previous years from what I've heard. There were multiple passages that were 5-6 minutes long of just straight listening with no breaks! Jingjing said it was really mentally exhausting having to focus so intensely on understanding the English for that long without any chances to rest her ears and brain. A couple of the longest passages were about some scientific research studies too, with lots of technical vocabulary that was hard to catch. On top of the crazy long passages, Jingjing mentioned that the accents used in the recordings were very diverse andnon-standard this year. In past years, it was usually easy to understand American or British English speakers. But in 2023, there were thick regional accents from places like Scotland, Australia, India and Singapore! Those accents made it superchallenging to accurately comprehend what was being said, especially when combined with the length and complexity of the material.Another thing that really threw Jingjing for a loop was that the topics covered on the listening exam were super random and all over the place this year. Like one passage was about the history of the bagpipe instrument, which is just such an obscure and odd subject for a high stakes test like the gaokao. Then another passage gave instructions for changing a car's oil and filter, which is basically an adult task that high schoolers wouldn't know much about. Jingjing felt it was really unfair to include such weirdly specific and unrealistic topics that were far beyond the usual academic subject areas students are used to being tested on.As if all that wasn't enough, Jingjing also told me that the actual questions and tasks students had to complete were extremely convoluted and Byzantine on the 2023 English listening section. It wasn't just straightforward multiple choice questions about the key details and facts from the passages like usual. Instead, there were all these torturous types of questions like:Putting events or steps into the correct chronological sequence from the listeningIdentifying the speaker's tone, attitude or underlying implications about certain thingsSummarizing the main idea or key arguments made in a conceptual or abstract wayApplying or transferring information from the listening to new contexts to solve problemsJingjing said questions like those which required such deep inferencing, critical thinking and cognitive skills rather than just basic comprehension were brutal for a timed exam like the gaokao listening section. She ran out of time on quite a few passages because she had to spend so long analyzing and puzzling over what the convoluted questions were even asking for.I could go on with more examples of why Jingjing felt the 2023。

Do you have a minute?W: Hi, Richard. Come in, please.M: I’ve been trying to get hold of you all afternoon.W: I was at the weekly managers’ meeting. How are things?M: Oh, splendid. I have some news.W: Good news?M: Wonderful news…to me, anyway! I’ve been offered a job for three years as an assistant to Prof.Hayes from Birmingham University. I’ll join him in Mexico City. What do you think about that?W: Wonderful, Richard! Just what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? Does it mean that you’ll leave soon?M: Next week. Let me explain a little about it. As you may know already, it’s a required meeting once a week. I expect you to do all the experiments and keep the results in your lab notebook. I’ll collect the notebooks every two weeks. You’ll be graded on lab notebooks and quizzes. But the most important information I want to give you now is about safety. First of all, you must wear shoes that cover your feet in the lab. Tennis shoes are OK. Also, don’t wear loose clothes, long scarves, big necklaces, or loose belts — they get caught in something or fall into liquid. Another thing to do for safety is cleaning up. Be sure to put the waste in the correct containers. We can’t mix liquid with paper. Thi s is extremely important. I don’t want any fires in this room. You are responsible for washing out your own lab equipment and putting it away. If you don’t do this, I will take away points from your grade. Nobody’s going to clean up after you. OK, any ques tions?参考答案:1-5 BCACB 6-10 ACCBA 11-15 ABCAB 16-20 BACAB。
