That is his way of saying that he lovesyou. And, if you pay attention, you will see that he uses his tail to say so many things. Every move-ment of the tail means a different thing. If the dog iswagging its tail, it is a sign of friendliness ; if histail is straight, it means he is getting ready for a fight ; and if his tail is tucked (塞) behind his legs, itmeans he is giving up the fight.Unlike dogs, cats' tail language is not so expressive. When a cat feels threatened, he puffs him-self up to appear big and his tail shakes with tension. And when he is displeased with something, helashes out(甩动) his tail. The tail language of dogs and cats has a little story behind it. Earlier, when dogs and cats hadnot become friends with human beings, they were predators. They used to hunt other animals for theirfood. When dogs went out hunting with their friends, tail language came handy. When they were closeto each other, dogs could use facial expressions to talk. But, for long-distance c,o~mmunication, theyused their tails. Unlike dogs, cats liked to hunt alone. So, they did not need to use tail language toooften. As a result, their vocabulary in tail language is much smaller than that of dogs'.(本题12分)1(单选题)What does it mean when a dog's tail is straight?(本题3分)A It has a lot to say to you.B It wants to stop fighting.C It is going to fight.D It likes to be patted.标准答案: C2(单选题)A cat tries to appear big when it is __________ .(本题3分)A facing a dangerB unhappyC ready to huntD hungry标准答案: A3(单选题)Which of the following does the author intend to say?(本题3分)A Dogs and cats are not good friends.B Dogs are much friendlier than cats.C Dogs and cats are usually good pets.D Dogs use tail language more than cats.标准答案: D4(单选题)In the last paragraph, the underlined word "predato.rs" refers to __________ .(本题3分)A animals that follow and obey other animalsB animals that kill and eat other animalsC animals that live in the wildD animals kept by people标准答案: B24(阅读理解题)根据下面内容,回答问题:Like any teenagers, the face of One Teen Story is changing fast. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1I strongly believe that understanding is more important than love, especially when it comes to parenting and intimate relationships. As a psychologist for more than twenty years I can tell you that I have never had an adult looking back at her childhood and complaining that her parents were too understanding. And similarly, I have met many divorced people who still love each other but yet they never really understood each other. The painful reality is love is just not enough. I’ll admit that there are people who I love and who I still need to b etter understand. I hope I’ll continue my work to understand them. The willingness to understand is very important. It is not always easy, but healthy love is strengthened by the willingness to understand. Love without understanding will wilt like flowers without water. Our egos are what seem to get in the way of understanding those who we love and care about. Often it is our need to be right that makes what others think and feel so wrong for us. I have certainly been quite guilty of this in some of my relationships. As I have written repeatedly in my books, empathy, is truly the emotional glue that holds all close relationships together. Empathy allows us to slow down and try to walk in the shoes of those we love. The deeper our empathy, the deeper—and healthier— our love. Not all relationships are meant to be. Yet all relationships that are meant to flourish in a healthy way, must stress understanding just as much, if not more, than love.61. From the passage we know that________.A. the author complains about her parents ‘being too understandingB. the author has been studying marriages for more than 20 yearsC. people divorced mainly because they didn’t love each otherD. some people divorced because they couldn’t understand each other62. Why are we unable to understand the others sometimes?A. Because we are caring the others too much.B. Because it is quite difficult to understand the others.C. Because we believe we are always right.D. Because the others have done something wrong.63. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Understanding is more important to parenting relationship than to other intimaterelationships.B. Understanding is less important than love as far as marriage is concerned.C. Understanding is more important than love to some degree.D. Understanding is more often neglected in parenting relationship.64. If we are to understand our partners, we should ________firstly .A. have willingness to do soB. have love for themC. get into connection with themD. care about them65. In this passage, the expression “walk in the shoes of” is similar in meaning to________ .A. befriendB. understandC. loveD. care aboutPassage 2Finally, the Christmas season is over. We can take a long breath, put up our feet, sip from a cup of good tea and relax. The frenzy, starting from Black Friday right after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve, of gift shopping, buying, wrapping, giving, receiving, opening, returning…is exhaustive and time consuming, but it takes place every year. There is considerable difference between the cultures in China and western countries when it comes to gift giving. In China, it is not polite to open a gift in front of the gift giver, and gift is only looked at after the guest has left. Here in America, gift givers always wrap their gifts, large or small, priceless or valueless, carefully and decorate them with colorful ribbons and little pretty paper flowers; and the lucky receiver is expected to open the gift right away in front of the giver, with great eagerness and curiosity, and should always express appreciation with the all time truthful comment, “this is just exactly what I wanted!” Well, as a matter of fact, most people would take their “always wanted” gi fts back to the store to exchange for something they reallywanted.Finding a gift for somebody, even a close family member, you’ll have to know what the person likes and shop for days before you can locate the perfect gift. But, still the person may not like the gift from you. Nowadays, stores would provide two copies of the receipts for anything they sell as a gift, one of which is included in the gift package so that the receiver can come back for an exchange. I know, it was unthinkable to cash out gift you get, but, times are different. Another good way to avoid all that shopping hassle is to purchase a gift card from one of the stores and send it to your niece, nephews, or a family member, so that they can get whatever they want or even keep the money.66. Finding a gift for somebody is a(n)________.A. easy jobB. tough taskC. Must be jobD. arranged task67. It is quite ________ for Chinese people to open the gift in front of the givers.A. usualB. normalC.abnormalD. unusual68. Gift giving is the same thing in China and America in that ________.A. people spend a lot of time preparing a giftB. people would cash out the gift immediatelyC. people are eager to get a gift from a friendD. people are less willing to give gifts69. Which of the following is the author’s suggestion?A. Open the gift immediately in front of the giver.B. Wrap the gift carefully.C. Express the appreciation for the gift you receive.D. Buying a present card to avoid the trouble in shopping.70. The author’s attitude towards gift giving is________ .A. indifferentB. protestingC.objectiveD. supportivePassage 3They already guide blind and disabled people;now dogs are to be trained to help people with dementia(痴呆). The duti es of these “guide dogs for the mind” will include reminding their owners to take medication, as well as encouraging them to eat, drink and sleep at regular intervals. The dementia dogs will be trained to respond to sound triggers in the home that prompt them to perform tasks. These could include delivering a bite proof bag of medicine with a note inside reminding the patient to take it, or waking them up in the morning. The idea was developed by design students at the Glasgow School of Art and will now be put into practice by Alzheimer’s Scotland and Dogs for the disabled.Joyce Gray of Alzheimer’s Scotland said: “People in the early stages of dementia are still able to live a relatively normal life, and dogs help to maintain routine.”The other advantage of using the pets as companions is that conversation can be increasingly confusing for people with Alzheimer’s, but dogs can give them a sense of silent support and companionship. People light up when they see animals. They don’t need to communicate ver bally but they can still interact. You can have a speechless bond. The dog would also encourage the owner to take them out for walks, ensuring they keep exercising and interacting with other people.71. As is mentioned in the passage, the guide dogs will do the following except for________.A. helping ensure the owner doing some exercisesB. reminding the owner to take medicineC. communicating with the owner in a non verbal wayD. helping the owner recover from the illness72. Who will train the dogs to perform such tasks?A. The students who developed the idea.B. The owners of the dogs.C. The experts in Alzheimer’s Scotland.D. It is not mentioned in the passage.73. What is true about the people suffering from dementia?A. They would like to stay with other people.B. They can maintain routine.C. They will gradually lose the ability to live a normal life.D. They would like to talk in a different way.74. The guide dogs helping the people with dementia will________.A. respond to t he owners’ orderB. respond to a sound deviceC. act on the owners’ instructionsD. act on the trainers’ order75. Having a conversation with people with dementia will be________.A. difficultB. interestingC. confusingD. encouragingPassage 4It seems obvious that you don’t give away your product for free but this is exactly what indie rock group The Crimea did earlier this year. The band’s reasoning goes like this: more people will download the free album than would pay for it. Therefore more people will hear The Crimea’s music. These people will then pay money for concerts by the band and perhaps buy a T-shirt or other merchandise. If the band play regular concerts to crowds of 200 or 300 people they can make more money than they would from sales of a CD. There will always be some people who want something they can hold in their hands so they will release the CD into the shops too—but making money through sales of their music isn’t the top priority. The story illustrates the creative thinking going on in the music business in response to dramatic changes over the last few years in the way that people buy music. Sales of music digitally—to computer, phones and MP3 players rose to$2 billion in 2006—an increase of almost 100 percent on the previous year—yet overall record company sales are down. People are simply not buying CDs in record shops in anything like the numbers they used to.This trend looks set to continue so the big question for the music industry is whether they can successfully manage the move to being primarily a digital industry without profits falling to unacceptable levels. There are both positive and negative signs. On the plus side, more and more people are buying music on mobile phones, which allows people to make impulse purchases—they can buy a song as soon as they hear it. Research by the UK mobile operator 3 suggested that 75 percent of 16 to 24year olds wanted to buy a track they liked as soon as they heard it. With so much competition for people’s disposable income, a product that you can sell immediately is a big advantage. The bad news for record companies, however, is the amount of music that is downloaded illegally.Piracy—usually in the form of cheaply copied CD—has long been an issue for the music business but the Internet means music can be copied and distributed freely through file-sharing sites on a large scale than ever before. It is this situation that leads bands to start giving away their music for free and promises to make the next few years a very interesting time in the music business.76. What is unusual about the Crimea’s business plan?A. Their business was given away free on the Internet.B. They gave CDs away free in shops.C. They played free concerts.D. They charged more for their CDs77. The Crimea hope to make money________ .A. through CD salesB. by giving concerts and selling T-shirts and other merchandiseC. by selling merchandise on the InternetD. through sales of merchandise in shops78. The Crimea also released CDs for sale in shops because________ .A. people who attend their concerts need themB. they want to make extra moneyC. there are still people who prefer CDs to other formatsD. people who fail to attend their concerts need them79. What is true about sales of music over the last year?A. Overall, sales are up last year.B. Overall, sales are down last year.C. There is no change compared to previous sales.D. 2014年成人英语三级(学士学位英语)真题及答案解析

北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试2014.05.10Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You shoulddecide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter m the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The first year of school in America, known as kindergarten, usually begins between the ages offive and six. Among rich countries such a late start is very strange. President Obama believes it isan economic and social problem; his education secretary goes as far as to say that it is "morallywrong". This statement has some support, as it is clear from research into vocabulary thatyoungsters from poor families enter kindergarten well behind those from rich families—adisadvantage that usually lasts a lifetime. Children from households on welfare knew 525 words bythe age of three, while the children of professionals had mastered 1,116.(76) Pre.school can help close this gap. So in a speech last month, Mr, Obama called for apartnership between the federal government and the states to expand it to every American child. Itlater became known that "every" meant those who come from families with incomes of up to 200% abovethe poverty line—equal to an income of $47,000 for a family of four.(77) Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not work. Theevidence suggests otherwise. For example, on March 20th new results were announced from a study of9.to.l 1.year.olds in New Jersey. This report found that disadvantaged children who had attendedpre.school had better literacy (读写能力), language, maths and science skills. And two years ofpre.kindergarten were better than one. Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimes, such as its effect oncrime rates and other factors that may eventually burden society. In additon to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars.“It’s even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, withall the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and of providing for theirown resources for a long stay on Mars," said Adam Baker. senior lecturer in space engineering atKingston University in London. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. Choose the correct answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage OneHow much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essential for human survival?51. This passage is mainly about ______.A) living space and behaviorB) population and living conditionsC) interesting experiments on ratsD) a natural law for human society52. What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?A) To determine how much living space a rat needs.B) To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.C) To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.D) To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.53. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded?A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others.B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully.C) They eat little but sleep soundly.D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like.54. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions ______.A) are directly related with populationB) may cause an increase in violenceC) may lead to high birth rateD) may bring about pollution problemsPassage TwoMany people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Over the Years, people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto ( 世界语) , was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof, a doctor in Warsaw. He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible. Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary language. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______.A) all people will be able to speak a common languageB) people will learn a foreign language betterC) people can understand each other betterD) people will be able to speak several languages56. Zamenhof made the language as simple as possible because ______.A) he wanted people to learn it quicklyB) he hoped more and more people would be willing to learn itC) he wanted everyone to speak it without any difficultyD) he hoped it would be accepted as an official world language57. Which of the following is NOT true of English?A) It is widely taught in schools.B) It has become a second language for many millions of people.C) Many books have been written in English.D) It is less popular than Esperanto.58. What is the best title of the passage?A) The language made by one man.B) A talk about the world language.C) English as a second language for everyone.D) Esperanto—a better language than English.Passage ThreeAfter the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse. More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 ,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a. m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city ’ s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake - resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake - resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that ______.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______.A) counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake’ s vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused byearthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of this passage is mostly to______.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake - resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake - resistant buildingSection BDirections; Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line throughDirections: Put the following sentences into Chinese. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. The first year of school in America, known as kindergarten, usually begins between the ages of five and six. Among rich countries such a late start is very strange. President Obama believes it is an economic and social problem; his education secretary goes as far as to say that it is "morally wrong" This statement has some support, as it is clear from research into vocabulary that youngsters from poor families enter kindergarten well behind those from rich families—a disadvantage that usually lasts a lifetime. Children from households on welfare knew 525 words by the age of three, while the children of professionals had mastered 1,116.Pre-school can help close this gap. So in a speech last month, Mr. Obama called for a partnership between the federal government and the states to expand it to every American child. It later became known that "every" meant those who come from families with incomes of up to 200% above the poverty line—equal to an income of $47,000 for a family of four. Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not work. The evidence suggests otherwise. For example, on March 20th new results were announced from a study of 9-to-11-year-olds in New Jersey. This report found that disadvantaged children who had attended pre-school had better literacy (读写能力), language, maths and science skills. And two years of pre-kindergarten were better than one. Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimes, such as its effect on crime rates and other factors that may eventually burden society. Critics have singled out a government scheme called Head Start, created in 1965, which provides poor households with a range of services ices including school-based early education.第1题Kindergarten in rich countries other than America usually begins at the age of ______.A.eightB.sevenC.sixD.four第2题According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Poor pre-school kids have a larger vocabulary than rich kids.B.President Obama believes that early education can solve all economic and social problems.C.Rich pre-school kids have a richer vocabulary than poor kids.D.President Obama´s education secretary thinks it is morally wrong to let kids start kindergarten early.第3题Which of the following about the New Jersey study is TRUE?A.There is no evidence to support the New Jersey study.B.New Jersey has created a new Head Start to help disadvantaged kids.C.Sending children to school at the age of four is not going to help.D.Two years of pre-kindergarten were better than one.第4题The phrase "single out" in the last paragraph means ______.A.chooseB.think aboutC.countD.depend on第5题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Secondary EducationB.Pre-school EducationC.Poor Kids´ EducationD.Rich Kids´ Education下一题(6~10/共15题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. This project, called Mars One, aims to send a small group of people to Mars in 2022 and eventually establish a permanent colony on the planet."Everything we need to go to Mars exists," said Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp in March 2014. "We have the rockets to send people to Mars, the equipment to land on Mars, the robots to prepare the settlement for humans. For a one-way mission, all the technology exists. " Yet the four astronauts (宇航员) chosen for the trip will be stuck on Mars—forever. And despite Mars One´s thorough planning, there are a number of challenges that may prevent the mission from ever taking place. The biggest road block could be the mission´s huge cost ($6 billion). However, Lansdorp is confident that Mars One will be able to fund the project by selling the broadcast rights for the mission and subsequent experiences living on the planet. Those broadcast rights will also play a part in helping to select the people who will be sent to Mars. Lansdorp said the company will hold a selection process similar to a reality show. Lansdorp is expecting at least 1 million applications from people around the world. In addition to the cost, several other potential problems could inhibit (阻止) the mission to Mars."It´s even more challenging to send people there with life support, with food, with air, with all the other things like books, entertainment, means of communication and means of providing for their own resources for a long stay on Mars," said Adam Baker, senior lecturer in space engineering at Kingston University in London. "The sheer size of the rockets you´d need to do this would be absolutely colossal."第6题According to Project Mars One, humans could send four people to Mars within the next ______ years.A.sevenB.eightC.tenD.six第7题According to Bas Lansdorp, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.For a one-way trip to Mars, all the technology exists.B.He could not come up with the fund for Mars One.C.We humans have the rockets to send people to Mars.D.We humans have the equipment to land on Mars.第8题According to the passage, all the following statements are TRUE EXCEPT that ______.A.a competition process will be held to select the four astronautsB.the cost of Mars One could go as much as $6 billionC.if it goes as planned, we could expect to watch Mars One on TVD.the four astronauts could return to Earth after a few years´ stay on Mars第9题The word "colossal" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.A.very largeB.very smallC.mediumD.average第10题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Ready for a Round Trip to MarsB.Ready for a Short Visit to MarsC.Ready for a One-way Trip to MarsD.Ready for a Walk on Mars上一题下一题(11~15/共15题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. When the United States Congress created Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the goal was to set aside a place where Americans could enjoy the beauty of nature for years to come. Now, 142 years later, there are hundreds of national parks across the country, and technology is changing the way people experience them. Should park visitors be able to use cell phones, or should their use be restricted?"Connectivity presents a real challenge to all of us." A1 Nash says. He is a public affairs officer at Yellowstone National Park. He says cell phone service at Yellowstone is available in parts of the park with stores and campgrounds. This makes it easy for visitors to share photos of their trip on social networking sites and to stay in touch with friends and family members. If a park visitor is hurt or in danger, cell phones make it easier to get help. Some say the ability to download applications that provide information about plants and animals in the park can enrich avisitor´s experience.Others say cell phones disturb people´s enjoyment of our national parks. In their view, cell phone towers are an eyesore, and they´d rather hear the sound of birds than the ring of an incoming call. Can you imagine looking out a peaceful lake or field of grass only to be disturbed by a person shouting into their phone, "Can you hear me now?"Nash says Yellowstone tries to strike a balance. "Ultimately, our job is to let visitors understand and enjoy nature better while protecting what people find special about Yellowstone, and one of those things that´s special is the ability to get away from the hustle and bustle (喧嚣) of one´s daily life."第11题Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Which U.S. National Park Has the Most Visitors?B.Should National Parks Allow the Use of Cell Phones?C.What Did Yellowstone Do to Enrich Park Visitors´ Experience?D.Can Technology Transform the Way People Experience Nature?第12题National parks were established ______.A.to show respect to former presidentsB.to raise public awareness about climate changeC.to preserve areas of natural beautyD.to create job opportunities第13题According to the passage, which of the following statements about the cell phone service at Yellowstone is TRUE?A.It is limited to certain areas in the park.B.It is available everywhere in the park.C.It is not available in the park.D.It is available to visitors at a fee.第14题The word "eyesore" in the third paragraph probably meansA.something unpleasant to look atB.something harmful to healthC.beautiful sceneD.serious threat第15题What´s the position of Yellowstone on cell phone use?A.Supportive.B.Neutral.C.Negative.D.Doubtful.上一题下一题(1/30)Part ⅡVocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part, there are 30 incomplete sentences. But as societies became more complex and division of labor more common, it was impossible for family members to teach the information and skills young people needed to become useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teaching came into being in our county, and teaching as a job has been of increasing importance over the past hundred years.Today, we have strict rules for teachers. We hope all children can attend schools. Many things tell us that teaching is indeed an "important" job.In recent years, there has been an increasing need for teachers to be " responsible ". This means that the public expects teachers to succeed in teaching important information to the young.Teachers' salaries today, while not much, certainly are much higher than they were in past years. These increases have come about because people have realized that without enough salaries, people who have abilities will not beco~ne teachers.Today almost no one says that "anybody will do" for a teacher. The public expects "quality people" to teach the young, and progress is being made to give salaries that will make people who have abilities become teachers.21.Before the job of teaching came into being ( ).A.family members had been responsible for the education of the youngB.specialists had been in charge of teaching young peopleC.young people had had to be self-educatedD.the society had played an important role in educating young people22.The job of teaching came into being mainly because of ( ).A.the development of the societyB.the explosion of informationC.the need for specialistsD.the civilization of human beings23.Teachers' salaries are raised today in order to ( ).A.show the importance of teaching as a jobB.attract more qualified people to become teachersC.make teachers "responsible" in their teachingD.improve the quality of public teaching24." There are over 100 microblogging services in operation, with some of the better-known services being Twitter, Plurk and Tumblr.52. The original use for microblogging was to allow people to broadcast what they were doing at any point in time, for example "Having coffee with Jane" or" Caught in traffic on my way to work". Although this is still a major use for microblogging, it has developed into a much more complex array of communications. People use microblogging platforms to share and seek information but in 140- 200 characters.53. This may be in the form of broadcasting what they are thinking; asking for support or advice;sharing resources;or discussion with others.54. Her right leg wasespecially damaged, and doctors cut it off above the knee. When she was 14,she got a high-tech leg made for sportsand put it to the test right away in a race for disabled athletes. “I remember being terrified because this was my firsttime,’’ she says. “But my doctor said,‘You have to start somewhere. ’ ”Scout was waiting nervously for the race to start when athlete Sarah Reinertsen came up and said,“I’ve beendoing this for a while. There is nothing new about people losing their patience while stuckin traffic or waiting in line. But some experts believe that people are less patient today than in the past. Some analysts suggest that in recent years many people are less patient because of technology. They suggest that"digital technology, from cellphones to e-mails to iPads, is changing our lives. The instant results we get from thistechnology have in turn increased our appetite for instant satisfaction in other aspects of our lives."Psychologist Jennifer Hartstein makes some observations. She explains that “we have become animmediate satisfaction culture, and we expect things to move quickly, efficiently and in the way we want. When thatdoesn7t happen, we tend to become increasingly frustrated and unsatisfied. “Some believe that e-mail is losing popularity and could soon become outdated. Why? Because many people whosend messages do not have the patience to wait hours, or even minutes, for a response. Also, with e-mails, as withletter writing, introductory and concluding greetings are often expected. But many people consider suchformalities(客套)to be boring and time-consuming. They prefer instant messaging. Many people do not take the timeto proofread what they put in writing. As a result, letters and e-mails contain numerous grammatical andtypographical errors. The thirst for immediate results is not limited to the realm of digital communications. People seem to be losingtheir ability to wait in other areas of life. For instance, do you ever find yourself talking too fast, eating too fast, driving too fast, or spending money too fast? The few moments it takes to wait for an elevator to come, for a trafficlight to change, or for a computer to start may seem like too long a time.21. According to the first paragraph,people______ .A. were more patient in the pastB. have been patient for a long timeC. used to be patient while stuck in trafficD. used to be patient while waiting in line22. Nowadays people lose their patience because .______A. their desire for satisfaction has increasedB. they are bored with what they haveC. they have more things to do than beforeD. their life has been changed by technology23. Some believe that e-mail could soon become outdated because_______ .A. it takes a long time to start the computerB. people value formalities between friendsC. people can hardly wait for a responseD. cellphones are more popular nowadays24. The pursuit of instant results causes people to __.A. become more impoliteB. have more errors in their writingsC. use voice messages instead of emailsD. lose many of their abilities in life25. The best title for the passage might be “”A. What Are the Problems Caused by Impatience?B. Are We Less Patient Today?C. What Happened to Technology?D. Has Digital Technology Changed Our Lives?Passage ThreeScientists measured the impact that people have on the environment using a term called carbon “footprint. ” Thatfootprint reflects the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted(排放)into the atmosphere as a result of someone’sdaily activities. Carbon footprints tend to be low for city dwellers(城镇居民). Living in a suburb outside a city, however, can turn that footprint into a bootprint.Energy researchers Christopher Jones and Daniel Kammen calculated carbon footprints for people in every zipcode across the United States. People living in city centers had small footprints, the researchers found. ,lIt is mucheasier to have a low carbon impact if your home is close to where you work, shop and play,” explains Jones. Livingwithin walking or biking distance cuts back on the amount of carbon dioxide associated with moving people by cars. And cities with extensive bus and subway networks allow people to travel great distances while keeping releases ofclimate-altering greenhouse gases low.Not everyone can afford to live in the city, however. And not everyone wants to. Rings of suburbs have popped uparound major cities across the world. Suburbs offer more space, allowing people to build larger homes. Suburbs mayoffer better schools for a family?s kids. But those homes are typically well beyond walking distance from where theirowners work, play or learn. So people who live in suburbs often drive long distances. The new findings are an important contribution to climate research, says Matthew Kahn,an environmentaleconomist at the University of California, who was not involved with the study. Kahn would like to see the analysisapplied to other parts of the world—Europe, India and China, for instance. That would give scientists a better feel forhow culture might mix with location to influence our carbon footprints.26. “Footprint” refers to the amount of carbon dioxide released by.A. an industryB. an individualC. a regionD. a country27. What is the new finding concerning the footprints of people living in cities and those living in suburbs?A. The two are not at all comparable.B. The former are higher than the latter.C. The latter are higher than the former.D. The former are similar to the latter.28. What is the key factor mentioned to explain the new "findings?A. Distance travelled by cars.B. Spending habits.C. Size of families.D. Attitude towards energy saving.29. What does Matthew Kahn think of the new findings?A. He is confused by the mixed messages.B. He thinks highly of them.C. He can easily understand them.D. He doubts their validity.30. What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?A. To call on people to reduce carbon footprints.B. To offer tips on how to live a low-carbon life.C. To clear up misunderstandings about carbon emission.D. To introduce the research on carbon footprints.Passage FourIt was a chilly November evening in New York City, and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway. Recent studies haveshown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions ______.A) are directly related with populationB) may cause an increase in violenceC) may lead to high birth rateD) may bring about pollution problems Passage TwoMany people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Today Esperanto isspoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role. 55. Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______. A) all people will be able to speak a common languageB) people will learn a foreign language betterC) people can understand each other betterD) people will be able to speak several languages56. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 ,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a. m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years havestrengthened the city ’ s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that ______.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways 60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______. A) counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake’ s vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of this passage is mostly to______.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B) encourage civil engineers to makeextensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake - resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake - resistant building Section BDirections; Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single linePart IV Translation Section A Directions: Put the following sentences into Chinese. We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed—ability teaching. On the contrary , both their knowledge and expensive are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按智力划分) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not—so—bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of t he top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade pupils just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality (76) We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full , not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co—operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.
