1. Have you ever watched a comedy from the East? Let me tell you, it's a whole different experience! Eastern comedies are known for their slapstick humor and exaggerated facial expressions. They rely heavily on physical comedy, with actors performing acrobatic stunts and hilarious pranks. It's a laugh riot from start tofinish!2. Now, let's talk about Western comedies. They are all about witty one-liners and clever wordplay. The humor is often sarcastic and satirical, poking fun at social norms and conventions. Western comedies also excel in observational humor, highlighting the absurdities of everyday life. You'll find yourself chuckling at the clever writing and sharp comedic timing.3. In Eastern comedies, you'll often see comedic duos who play off each other's strengths and weaknesses. One character might be the fool, always getting into trouble, while the other is the straight man, trying to keep things under control. Their chemistry and comedic timing are what make these films so entertaining. You can't help but rootfor them and laugh at their misadventures.4. On the other hand, Western comedies often focus on individual characters who find themselves in hilarious situations. These characters are often flawed and relatable, making their comedic journey all the more enjoyable. Whether it's a bumbling detective or a clumsy romantic lead, you'll find yourself invested in their story and laughing along with their mishaps.5. Another key difference between Eastern and Western comedies is the cultural context. Eastern comedies often incorporate elements of traditional culture, such asfolklore or historical references, which adds an extralayer of humor for those familiar with the culture. Western comedies, on the other hand, rely more on universal themes and relatable situations that can be understood by a global audience.6. Finally, let's not forget about the physicality of Eastern comedies. From elaborate fight scenes to over-the-top dance numbers, these films are a visual treat. The actors' expressions and body language are exaggerated for comedic effect, creating moments that will have you rolling on the floor laughing. It's a perfect blend of comedy and spectacle.7. In contrast, Western comedies focus more on the verbal humor and clever dialogue. The jokes are oftenquick-witted and require some level of cultural orlinguistic understanding to fully appreciate. It's all about the delivery and timing, with actors delivering their lines with impeccable comedic precision. In conclusion, Eastern and Western comedies offer unique and distinct forms of humor. Whether you prefer the physicality and slapstick of Eastern comedies or the clever wordplay and observational humor of Western comedies, there's something for everyone. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and get ready to laugh your heart out, no matter which side of the world you're in!。

A Master of Nonverbal Humor课文
A Master of Nonverbal Humor(1) As Victor Hugo once said, "Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face", and up to now nobody has been able to do this better than Charlie Chaplin. He brightened the lives of Americans and British through two world wars and the hard years in between. He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed, so they could feel more content with their lives.(2) Not that Charlie's own life was easy! He was born in a poor family in 1889. His parents were both poor music hall performer s. You may find it astonishing that Charlie was taught to sing as soon as he could speak and dance as soon as he could walk. Such training was common in acting families at this time, especially when the family income was often uncertain. Unfortunately his father died, leaving the family even worse off, so Charlie spent his childhood looking after his sick mother and his brother. By his teens, Charlie had, through his humor, become one of the most popular child actors in England. He could mime and act the fool doing ordinary everyday tasks. No one was ever bored watching him —his subtle acting made everything entertaining.(3) As time went by, he began making films. He grew more and more popular as his charming character, the little tramp, became known throughout the world. The tramp, a poor, homeless man with a moustache, wore large trousers, worn-out shoes and a small round black hat. Hewalked around stiffly carrying a walking stick. This character was a social failure but was loved for his optimism and determination to overcome all difficulties. He was the underdog who was kind even when others were unkind to him.(4) How did the little tramp make a sad situation entertaining? Here is an example from one of his most famous films, The Gold Rush. It is the mid-nineteenth century and gold has just been discovered in California. Like so many others, the little tramp and his friend have rushed there in search of gold, but without success. Instead they are hiding in a small hut on the edge of a mountain during a snowstorm with nothing to eat. They are so hungry that they try boiling a pair of leather shoes for their dinner. Charlie first picks out the laces and eats them as if they were spaghetti. Then he cuts off the leather top of the shoe as if it were the finest steak. Finally he tries cutting and chewing the bottom of the shoe. He eats each mouthful with great enjoyment. The acting is so convincing that it makes you believe that it is one of the best meals he has ever tasted!(5) Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed and produced the films he starred in. In 1972 he was given a special Oscar for his outstanding work in films. He lived in England and the USA but spent his last years in Switzerland, where he was buried in 1977. He is loved and remembered as a great actor who could inspire people with great confidence.Slide Vt. 杰出的;显著的;未解决的;未偿付的At times 有时候Be content with 以…为满足Badly off 穷的;缺少的Pick up 拿起;捡起;拾起Star in 担任主角;主演Knock into 撞上;撞见;偶然遇见Deal with对付;应付;处理;安排。
Mr. Bean, a character portrayed by the talented actor Rowan Atkinson, has been a source of laughter and joy for audiences around the world. His unique brand of humor, which often relies on physical comedy and clever facial expressions, transcends language barriers and cultural differences. Inthis essay, we will explore the character of Mr. Bean, his impact on comedy, and why he remains a beloved figure in the world of entertainment.Firstly, the character of Mr. Bean is a masterclass in non-verbal humor. Rarely speaking, Mr. Bean communicates his thoughts and intentions through a series of gestures, grimaces, and exaggerated movements. This silent approach to comedy allows viewers to focus on the visual gags and the universal language of humor, making Mr. Bean accessible to a global audience.Secondly, Mr. Bean's adventures often involve everyday situations that are relatable to many people. Whether it's a trip to the beach, a visit to the dentist, or a simple attempt to enjoy a meal, Mr. Bean finds himself in scenarios that are familiar to us all. His mishaps and the chaos that ensues are a humorous reminder of the unexpected challenges we sometimes face in our own lives. Moreover, the character's childlike innocence and obliviousness to social norms add a layer of charm to hisantics. Mr. Bean is not malicious; his intentions are always pure, even if his actions lead to comedic disaster. This innocence endears him to the audience, who can laugh at his predicaments without feeling any animosity towards the character. The impact of Mr. Bean on comedy is significant. He has inspired countless comedians and has shown that humor can be conveyed without the need for dialogue. His influence can be seen in the rise of slapstick and physical comedy in television shows and films, proving that sometimes, a well-timed pratfall can be just as effective as a punchline. In conclusion, Mr. Bean is more than just a character in a television series; he is a cultural phenomenon. His ability to make people laugh through the simplest of means is a testament to the universal appeal of humor. As we continue to navigate the complexities of life, Mr. Bean serves as a delightful reminder that sometimes, all we need is a silly face or a well-executed pratfall to bring a smile to our faces.。

The Power of Humor: The Mechanics of Making People Laugh.Humor is an intriguing aspect of human communicationthat has the remarkable ability to bring joy, relief, and even a sense of unity among people. The art of makingothers laugh is not merely a talent but a skill that can be honed through understanding the psychology and mechanics behind it. This essay delves into the complexities of humor, exploring the various elements that contribute to its effectiveness and the impact it has on our social interactions. The Psychology of Laughter. Before delving into the specifics of what makes people laugh, it's crucial to understand the psychological underpinnings of humor. Laughter, often considered a reflex response, is actually a complex psychological response thatinvolves multiple brain regions. When we encounter something humorous, the brain's reward system is activated, releasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with pleasure and reward. This response is not just physiological; it is also deeply cultural and social. Humor often relies on shared cultural references, language patterns, and social norms to resonate with an audience.Types of Humor.Humor takes many forms, each with its unique appeal and effectiveness. Here are some of the most common types of humor and how they work:1. Slapstick Humor: This type of humor relies on physical comedy, such as falling, bumping into things, or otherwise engaging in comic antics. Slapstick humor is often visual and relies on timing and exaggeration to evoke laughter.2. Verbal Humor: Verbal humor encompasses jokes, puns, and wordplay. It plays with language, manipulating wordsand meanings to create unexpected outcomes that surprise and delight the listener. Verbal humor often requires a higher level of cognitive processing and language comprehension.3. Satirical Humor: Satire uses humor to criticize or mock social institutions, behaviors, or individuals. It often takes the form of parody or exaggeration to highlight flaws or inconsistencies, provoking thought and laughter in equal measure.4. Black Humor: Also known as gallows humor or dark humor, this type of humor deals with serious or tabootopics in a light-hearted or ironic manner. It can be controversial and often walks a fine line between offensive and amusing. The Ingredients of Humor. While there are various types of humor, they all share certain common ingredients that contribute to their effectiveness:1. Surprise: Humor often involves an element of surprise, whether it's a twist in a story, an unexpected outcome, or a reversal of expectations. This surprise triggers a cognitive response in the brain that leads to laughter.2. Incongruity: Humor often plays with our expectations and norms, presenting situations or characters that are out of the ordinary or unexpected. This incongruity between what we expect and what we see creates a disconnect that is amusing.3. Timing: Timing is crucial in humor. The delivery ofa joke or comic moment needs to be precise to evoke the desired response. A well-timed punchline can make all the difference between a funny joke and a flop.4. Cultural Relevance: Humor is often deeply rooted in culture, and understanding cultural references and norms is key to appreciating certain types of humor. Humor that resonates with an audience's cultural background is morelikely to evoke laughter. The Social Impact of Humor.Humor plays a significant role in social interactions. It can break down barriers, create bonds, and foster asense of community. Laughter has the power to diffuse tension, relieve stress, and even improve mood. Humor canbe used as a tool for social commentary, criticism, andeven activism. By using humor, people can communicate complex ideas or messages in a more accessible and engaging manner.Conclusion.The art of making people laugh is a complex and multifaceted endeavor that involves understanding the psychology of humor, the various types of humor, and the ingredients that make it effective. Humor is not just a means of entertainment; it is a powerful tool that can be used to connect with others, communicate important messages, and create positive social change. As we continue toexplore the mysteries of humor, we discover more about ourselves, our society, and the remarkable power of laughter.。
本课的教学难点为:use the proper forms of modal verbs to express guesses about what happened and what is happening now.

Do you think his poor childhood helped him in his work? 和What can we learn from him?

Modern Times is a 1936 comedy film by Charles Chaplin that has his iconic Little Tramp character, in his final silentfilm appearance, struggling to survive in the modern, industrialized world. The film is a comment on the desperate employment and fiscal conditions many people faced during the Great Depression, conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization. The movie stars Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Stanley Sandford and Chester Conklin, and was written and directed by Chaplin.

A Study on Verbal Humor
Recently, I have read some books about pragmatics. I find that Chinese can not totally understand the American humor. That is to say, Chinese can not get the pleasant surprise. How to avoid it ?
In linguist field, researchers have already studied humor from the cooperative principle, ambiguity and figures of speech respectively.
There is no standard definition of humor, while something in common:humor, as an important part of language and a common phenomenon, contains linguistic and non-linguistic human behavior; humor is the capability to make people think about something. In a word, things that are laughable, amusing, funny can be called humor.
Many people have views of ughter arises primarily in response to weakness, ugliness and the inadequacy of the laughable people. This can be seen as superiority theory. Incongruity theory mainly concerns the surprising, illogical or unexpected juxtaposition of ideas or situations. Relief theory considers humor as an outlet for mental, nervous, and psychic energy after a strain, struggle or tension as well as a rebellion against the moral, ethical, and logical constraints of everyday life. It is about effects of humor perception on human emotional life and its interaction with psychological architecture.
Humor is generated through violating the principles, which leads to the inconsistency between speaker and hearer’s utterances.Leech proposed pp as a supplement of Grice’s Cooperative Principle which formed Gricean Theory. He holds that people flout the CP because they want to observe the PP, which is crucial in the maintenance of social relations. That is to say some maxims are intentionally flouted for the sake of being polite.
Relevance theory holds that verbal communication involves not only encoding and decoding, but also, more crucially, the drawing of inferences, in which contextual assumptions play a predominant role.
The process of interpreting conversational humor usually involves indirectness in expressions. Indirectness reduces the degree of relevance, and thus calls for extra processing effort on the part pf the hearer. To interpret the utterance as consistent with the principle of relevance, he has to expand the context to incorporate what is going on in the immediate environment or encyclopedia knowledge until he has enough effects to make the utterance optimally relevant as the speaker might manifestly have foreseen. The humor is created.
Humor is indispensable to any language. Humor is closely related to culture. Humor study is beneficial to cross-culture communication. Humor can reflect different cognitive styles.
In order to develop students’ communicative and linguistic competence,it is necessary for us to blend both language teaching and culture teaching together in a foreign language class.。
