"My grandmothers didn,t do anything but keep house and serve everybody.ey Th were programmed to do that," said Emily Cornette, head of a chapter of the7-year-old Red Hat Society. While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers 生育高峰期出生的人),and the same people who refused their parents, way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old. If you take into consideration feminism 女权主义),a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable必燃的).In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple 紫色的)clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing. "The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: ,When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn,t go,'" said Ellen Cooper, who founded the RedHat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention. "The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else," Cooper said. "Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves." The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car. if you want the car back, pay up then. The car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off. There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind one that avoids (避免)not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has played a double trick, he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an ac启(示)in the newspaper asking for help. The theory is supported bythe fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded -under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars-seems too little for a car worth many times more. Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. "We have more important things to do,“ he said. 1小题〉After the car owner received a phone call, he.A went to a certain pigeon and put some money in the bag it carriedB gave the money to the thief and had his car back in a parkC sent some money to the thief by mailD told the press about it答案解析:2小题〉The "lazier and more inventive" criminal refers to.A the car thief who stays at homeB one of those who put the ads in the paperC one of the policemen in ChangwaD the owner of the pigeons答案解析:3小题〉The writer mentions the fact that "none of the stolen cars have been returned" to show.A how easily people get fooled by criminalsB what Chen thinks might be correctC the thief is extremely cleverD the money paid is too little答案解析:4小题〉The underlined word "they" in the last paragraph refers to.A criminalsB pigeonsC the stolen carsD demands for money答案解析:5小题〉We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners becauseA he reads the ads in the newspaperB he lives in the same neighborhoodC he has seen the car owners in the parkD he has trained the pigeons to follow them答案解析:第20 题:Reading Comprehension:Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family lookedaround the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager,s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe. "The safety issue is a big one,“ says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn,t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked, what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer—"That,s not a problem here," Mahoney began to feel uneasy. "No crime whatsoever?" comments Mahoney today."I just don,t buy it." Nor should he. in 1999 the U.S. Department of Educatiohad reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. "Parentts need to understand that times have changed since they went to college," says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. "Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation." But getting accurate information isn,t easy. Colleges must report crim statistics by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. "The truth may not always be obvious," warns S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation,s leading campus safety watchdog group. To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions.1小题〉The Mahoneys visited quite a few colleges last August.A to express the opinions of many parentsB to choose a right one for their daughterC to check the cost of college educationD to find a right one near a large city答案解析:2小题〉It is often difficult to get correct information on campus crime because some collegesA receive too many visitorsB mirror the rest of the nationC hide the truth of campus crimeD have too many watchdog groups答案解析:3小题〉The underlined word "buy" in the third paragraph re, cansA mindB admitC believeD expect答案解析:4小题〉We learn from the text that "the honest ones" in the fourth paragraph most probably refers to collegesA that are protected by campus securityB that report campus crime by lawC that are free from campus crimeD that enjoy very good publicity答案解析:5小题〉What is the text mainly about?A Exact campus crime statistics.B Crimes on or around campuses.C Effective solutions to campus crime.D Concerns about kids'campus safety. 答案解析:第21 题:Reading Comprehension:The house was quiet at 5 am and Tim,s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He,d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring of the freezer had been the sea. Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples intohis schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He,d eat after he,d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the seaHe wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? The sandhills still breathed heat from yesterday's sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves. The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world. Over the first rocks, along to the point, Tim glanced back. The beac was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky. He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. The schools and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re not training kids to work any more,” says Klompus. “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying ‘go look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but i t’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.26. The main idea of the passage is that ________.A) parents should leave their children aloneB) kids should have more activities at schoolC) it’s time to be stricter with our kidsD) parents should always set a good example to their kidsQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:Manners are very important in every country, but the trouble is that different countries have different ideas about what counts as polite behavior. What is good manners in one country may not be appropriate behavior in another. Chinese people may be shocked at what counts as good manners in England. When an Englishman passes a friend in the street he does not always stop to talk. He may just nod, say "hello" and pass on. If two friends do stop to talk, they do not shake hands. It is only at parties for young people (students, for instance) that a person could go up to someone he does not know and introduce himself. On more formal occasions or at parties run by older people a guest always waits to be introduced to someone he does not know by the host, hostess or another guest who he already knows. At even a formal dinner an Englishman does not wait for a toast before he has a drink. The English reserve toasts for very formal or very special occasions. In these cases the toast will usually be accompanied by a short speech, for example, at a wedding reception or at a party for somebody who is retiring. After a private dinner in someone's house an Englishman will only shake hands with the host and hostess if it is a fairly formal occasion, like a business dinner, and he will usually put his coat on and say goodbye as he leaves the house.Luckily, like Chinese people, the English usually excuse foreign students over matters of etiquette. But even so, perhaps the safest advice for the overseasstudent, no matter what country he is visiting, is to follow the old proverb: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.31. When an Englishman meets a friend in the street, he may ____________.A. stop to talk to his friendB. just nod and say “hello”C. shake hands with his friendD. just say goodbye32. What will a person do when he attends a party run by older people?A. Go up to a stranger and introduce himself.B. Ask his friend to introduce him to others.C. Give a speech in front of others to introduce himself.D. Wait to be introduced by the host / hostess.33. On which occasion will the English toast?A. A wedding reception.B. A dinner party.C. A speech.D. A meeting.34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Different countries have similar ideas about what good manners are.B. Chinese people seem to be more polite than English people.C. An Englishman will shake hands with the host after a private business dinner.D. The English usually can’t understand foreign students, impolite behaviors.35. Which of the following best explains the proverb: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.A. If you go to Rome, you must do things like the Romans.B. When you go to a foreign country, you should learn something about their manners.C. Romans always do the right thing, so you should follow them.D. Manners in Roman are as easy to follow as in other countries. Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:The news of the escape first got around on Sunday’s night. It threw the oldest son into anxiety, almost panic, possibly because he was old enough to know what it meant. The youngest didn’t seem to care: he was too young. Mrs. Birnam—an unimaginative mother, easy-going, busy with family matters—seemed to take theattitude that if danger was involved, it was danger to somebody else besides themselves. Don’s reaction, the middle son, was romantic; what a pity that it had happened forty miles away, and thus the consequent exciting danger or threat would never reach as far as their town of Arcadia. He was twelve at the time. There had been a break at the state prison in Auburn. Six dangerous criminals had shot their way out and were even now –so everybody said – terrorizing the countryside, though no one had seen them since their rush to freedom after a wounded guard, at gun point, had raised the outer gate for their escape. They might equally have vanished off the face of the earth or hidden in somebody’s abandoned barn, too frightened to stir form their hiding places for weeks to come. The news came to the Birnams inevitably (必然) form one of their neighbors over the telephone. There was no radio in those days but Mrs. Kirtle was just as good. By some mysterious gift she always managed to hear things before anybody else and immediately got on the phone or rushed across the back yards, ducking under clotheslines and knocking at kitchen door. “Pauline Revere,” the boys called her, and their mother suppressed (抑制) a smile and scolded them for disrespect.36. How far was the prison from Arcadia?A) Forty miles. B) Six miles.C) Twelve miles. D)The selection doesn’t tell us.37. Mrs. Birnam’s family learned of the news of the escape ________.A) through Mrs. Kirtle B) over the radioC) form the wounded guard D) by some mysterious gift38. The boy’s attitude toward Mrs. Kirtle was one of ________.A) tolerance B) impoliteness C) doubt D) kindness39. He had worked up a first class business, married a charming woman and built himself a good house in the London suburbs, that was neither so modern, nor so conventional . He had good taste. His son, Bob, 19, was doing well at Oxford; his daughter, April, aged 16, who was at a good school, had no wish to use make-up or wear low dresses. She still considered herself too young for these things. Yet she was happy, affectionate and thoroughly enjoyed life. All the same, for some time, Tom had been aware that he was working hard for very little. His wife gave hima quick kiss in the morning when he left for the office and, if she was notat a party, a quick kiss in the evening when he came home. It was obvious her life was completely filled with the children, her clothes, with keeping her figure slim, with keeping the house clean and smart, with her charities, her tennis and her friends, and parties. The children were even busier –the boy with his work, and with his own friends, the girl with hers. They were polite to Tom but if he came into the room when they were entertaining a friend there was at once a feeling of constraint. Even if they were alone together, he saw that when he came upon them they were slightly embarrassed and changed the subject of their conversation. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for 15 weeks: while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous number of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activities. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.71) Normally a student would at least attend __________ classes each week.A. 36B. 20C. 12D. 1572) According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed________ .A. to live in a different universityB. to take a particular course in a different universityC. to live at home and drive to classesD. to get two degrees from two different universities73) American university students are usually under pressure of workBecause __________.A. their academic performance will affect their future careersB. they are heavily involved in student affairsC. they want to observe university disciplineD. they want to run for positions of authority74) Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizationsProbably because ________.A.they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studiesB.they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC.such positions help them get better jobsD.such positions are usually well paid75) The student organizations seem to be effective in __________.A. dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB. ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC. evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD. keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesKey71) B. 1272) B. to take a particular course in a different university73) A. their academic performance will affect their future careers74) C. such positions help them get better jobs75) B. ensuring that the students observe university regulationsPassage 3We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-abilityteaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experiences are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in grading pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic abilities. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.76) In the passage the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching”is ___________.A. criticalB. questioningC. approvingD. objective77) By “held back” ( line 1) the author means “___________”.A. made to remain in the same classesB. forced to study in the lower classesC. drawn to their studiesD. prevented from advancing78) The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern should be thedevelopment of the student’s ___________.A. personal qualities and social skillsB. total personalityC. learning ability and communicative skillsD. intellectual ability79) Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A.
