2017年考研英语阅读理解模拟题(四)及答案:法学类
2017年考研英语阅读理解模拟题(四)及答案:法学类 The Norwegian Government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have been laid down (though these have already been raised); and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems , and few people believe that the Government will be able to hold things back for long. As on Norwegian politician said last week : “We will soon be changed beyond all recognition.”Ever since the war , the Government has been carrying out a programme of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few years this programme has had a great deal of success : Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university , a large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people south , and within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins. The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north , however. With nearly 100 percent employment , everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose more of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad. The real argument over oil is its threat to the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the population , but they are an important part of it , because Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as essentially Norwegian. And it is the farmers and the fishermen who are most critical of the oil industry because of the damage that it might cause to the countryside and to the sea.1.The Norwegian Government would prefer the oil industry to[A] provide more jobs for foreign workers.[B] slow down the rate of its development.[C] sell the oil it is producing abroad.[D] develop more quickly than at present.2.The Norwegian Government has tried to[A] encourage the oil companies to discover new oil sources.[B] prevent oil companies employing people from northern Norway.[C] help the oil companies solve many of their problems.[D] keep the oil industry to something near its present size.3.According to the passage , the oil industry might lead northern Norway to[A] the development of industry.[B] a growth in population.[C] the failure of the development programme.[D] the development of new towns.4.In the south , one effect to the development of the oil industry might be[A] a large reduction on unemployment.[B] a growth in the tourist industry.[C] a reduction in the number of existing industries.[D] the development of a number of service industries.5.Norwegian farmers and fishermen have an important influence because[A] they form such a large part of Norwegian ideal.[B] their lives and values represent the Norwegian ideal.[C] their work is so useful to the rest of Norwegian society.[D] they regard oil as a threat to the Norwegian way of life.Vocabulary1.Norwegian 挪威的;挪威人2.coastline 海岸线3.recognition 承认;认识;赞赏4.countryside 乡下;乡民难句译注1.A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have been laid down (though these have already been raised); and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers.【结构简析】用两个分号连接三句句子。

section. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C andD . You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. It‘s very interesting to note where the debate about diversity(多样化)is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund,we have a lot of contact with top corporate(公司的) leaders;none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilledAmericans means we have to expand the pool of potential employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing andat where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promotingpolicies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants.Corporate leaders know that if that does not occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers,or the business managers they will need.Likewise,I don‘t hear people in the academy saying.“Let’s go backward.Let‘s go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy(不拘一格选人才)” (which was never true-we never had a meritocracy, although we’ve come closer to it in the last 30 years.) I recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus has doubled its minority population in the last six years.I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now,all of us feel the university is betterbecause corporate board rooms or on college campuses.Choose correct answers to the question:46.The w ord“imperative”(Line5,Para.1) most probably refers to something _____A.SuperficialB.remarkableC.debatableD.essential47.Which of the following groups of people still differ in their views on diversity?A.Minorities.B.Politicians.C.Professors.D.Managers.48.High corporate leaders seem to be in favor of promoting diversity so as to ______A.lower the rate of unemploymentB.win equal political rights for minoritiesC.be competitive in the world marketD.satisfy the demands of a growing population49.It can be inferred from the passage that _____A.meritocracy can never be realized without diversityB.American political circles will not accept diversityC.it is unlikely that diversity will occur in the U.S. MediaD.minorities can only enter the fields were no debate is heard about diversity50.According to the passage diversity can be achieved in American society by ____A.expanding the pool of potential employeesB.promoting policies that provide skills to employeesC.training more engineers, scientists lawyers and business managersD.providing education for all regardless of race or sexPassage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not all will be saved, andperhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quality schools just as there are low-quality business. We have no obligation to save them simply because they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue arethreatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial squeeze, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenuessignificantly.Raising tuition doesn‘t bring in more revenue, for each time tuition goes up,the enrollment goes down,or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up.Schools are bad businesses, whether public or private, not usually because of mismanagement but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students.Even a very good college is a very bad business. It is such colleges, thriving but threatened,I worry about.Low enrollment is not their chief problem.Even with full enrollments, they may go under.Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are inherently (固有地)better than public schools.Examples to the contrary abound.Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity.Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Enthusiastic supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher education.Choose correct answers to the question:51.According to the author‘s opinion, schools are bad businesses because of _______.A.mismanagementB.too few studentsC.financial squeezeD.their characteristics52.The author used the phrase “go under” in Para. 3 to mean “_______”。

Part I Reading Comprehension (共20⼩题,每⼩题2分,共40分)Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Why don’t birds get lost on their long migratory (迁徙的) flight? Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now they are beginning to fill in the blanks. Not long ago, experiments showed that birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds that fly mainly by night? Tests with artificial (⼈造的) stars have proved conclusively that certain night-flying birds are able to follow stars in their long-distance flights. One such bird – a warbler – had spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use stars for guidance. The bird’s cage was laced under an artificial star-filled sky at migration time. The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the artificial stars caused a change in the direction of his flight.Scientists think that warblers, when flying in daylight, use the sun for guidance. But stars are apparently their main means of directed flight in the night. What do they do when stars are hidden by clouds? Apparently, they find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coast lines and river courses. But when it is too dark to see these, the warblers circle helplessly, unable to find their way.1. Which of the following is NOT true about migratory bird’s flight?A、Some birds fly mainly by day.B、Some birds fly mainly by night.C、Birds like to fly during daylight hours.D、Birds depend on the sun or stars to guide them.2. What do we know about the experimental warbler?A、It was set free for the experiment.B、It had never flown freely outdoors.C、It had never been placed under the sun.D、It had lost its way in its daylight flight.3. What do we know about warblers as a whole?A、They do not have intelligence.D、They cannot sense changes in the position of the moon.4. What does the passage say about warblers’ sense of direction?A、They get lost under star-filled sky.B、They lose their way when it is too dark.C、They are not able to see clearly at night.D、They usually depend on clouds for direction.5. What does “fill in the blanks” in the first paragraph mean?A、“to do the exercise”B、“to take the test”C、“to know the right words”D、“to know the answer”Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:How men first learned to invent words is unknown. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations – the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the happy and sad events of our past; the more we read and learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to out minds and feelings. This attractive use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a masterof words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and, by their position and association, can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech dull and silly.6. Which of the following did men invent first?A、WordsB、SoundsC、SignsD、Letters7. Why did men invent language?A、To be different form animals.B、To make their ideas known to others.C、To make nice sounds for others to hear.D、To have something to write down with.8. Which of the following is true of words according to the passage?A、Their power is beyond imagination.D、They enable people to live longer and read more.9. Why does the author mention “poet” in the last paragraph?A、A poet is full of great thoughts and feelings.B、A poet is an example of good language users.C、A poet tells of the glad and sad events of his past.D、A poet knows more sounds and words than others.10. What is the best title of the passage?A、Language and Its Use.B、Language and Human Experience.C、Poet: A Master of Words.D、How Language Came into Being.Passage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:In the 1800s, trains roared into stations. They were symbols of progress and expansion. They played as much of a role in America’s history as presidents and generals. The first American railroads were built in the late 1820’s. The early railroads provided cheap transportation for shippers and travelers. To encourage the railroads to expand into unsettled land, President Millard Fillmore signed a series of landgrant acts (⼟地拨赠法案) in the 1850’s. These acts gave the railroad companies ownership of land that ran along the railways. In return for the land, the railroads carried government traffic at reduced rates. The railroad companies sold much of their land to farmers and cattlemen, who then shipped their goods on the trains. The importance of the railroads became clear during the Civil War. During the war, trains carried troops, arms, and supplies. One reason that the North won the war is that it had more use of the railroads.Between 1865 and 1900, railroads grew rapidly. The first transcontinental (跨越全洲的) route was completed in 1869. This track made easier for pioneers to cross the Rocky Mountains and settle the West. And the railroads brought new people to the West even before the trains started running. Thousands of Chinese and Irish laborers helped to lay down the tracks.11. When were the first American railroads built according to the passage?A、Around 1800.B、Around 1830.C、Around 1860.D、Around 1890.12. Which of the following is NOT a result of the landgrant acts of the 1850’s?A、The railroads expanded into unsettled lands.B、Farmer and settlers received land for free.C、The government could pay less for its railroad use.D、Farmers and cattlemen bought land form the railroads.13. What was one of the reasons that the South was defeated in the Civil War?A、The South was short of military supplies.D、The North used railroads to attack the Southern army.14. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?A、Railroads grew rapidly between 1865 and 1900.B、Railroad construction created a lot of jobs.C、Trains carried Chinese and Irish laborers to the West.D、The first railroad that reached the West was completed in 1866’s.15. These subjects were all studied, whenever possible, in the original classical texts. The humanities curriculum conflicted directly with more traditional education that was based on scholasticism (经院哲学). A scholastic education concentrated on the study of logic, natural philosophy, and metaphysics, or the nature of reality. Scholars oftenclashed sharply over these two systems of education.Underlying the differences between these two philosophies was the humanists'deep conviction that society had outgrown older ways of thought. According to the humanists, these ways of thought emphasized abstract speculation and relied too heavily on Christian teachings. Many of the humanists were townspeople who were not directly associated with the church. These urban residents tended to object to an educational system that was largely monopolized by the clergy and oriented to clerical needs. Humanists were accustomed to the ever changing, concrete activities of city life and found the rigid and closed systems of abstract thought to be both useless and irrelevant. In sum, humanism reflected the new environment of the Renaissance(⽂艺复兴). Its essential contribution to the modern world was not its concern with antiquity, but its flexibility and openness to all the possibilities of life.Renaissance humanism was complex, with few unifying features beyond a common belief that humanity and society could be improved through a new kind of education based on a study of the classics. Humanists varied widely in the ways they applied these ideas to areas that interested them. Some humanists were mainly interested in rhetoric and Latin prose style, while others analyzed ancient texts to determine exact meanings. One group focused on ways to improve society in general, while Christian humanism applied the techniques of humanist scholarship to the study of church documents, particularly the Bible.16. Why were the humanities subjects required to be studied in the original classical text?A The humanists believed that those texts were the best ones.B Humanism took its origin in classical works in many fields.C The humanists disliked their contemporary works.D The humanists wanted to be different from scholasticism.17. For each blank there are four choices. Choose the one that best fits into the passage and then marks your answer on the Answer Sheet. There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born 61 . Human brains differ considerably, 62 being more capable than others. 63 no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence 64 he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what 65 to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought 66 . If an individual is handicapped (受阻碍) 67 , it is likely that his brain will 68 to develop and he will 69 attain the level of intelligence of which he is 70 . The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be 71 by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and John. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they are placed in 72 foster (寄养) homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an 73 community with poor educational 74 . John, 75 , was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who has been to college. This environmental 76 continued until the twins were 77 their late teens, 78 they were given tests to 79 their intelligence. John’s I.Q. (智商) was 125, twenty-five points higher than the 80 and fully forty points higher than his identical brother.61. A. for B. by C. with D. in62. A. most B. some C. many D. few63. A. But B. For C. 以下是店铺为大家搜索整理的2017年英语四级考试阅读模拟考试题及答案,希望能给大家带来帮助!Women’s Positions in the 17th CenturySocial circumstances in Early Modern England mostly served to repress women’s voices. Patriarchal culture and institutions constructed them as chaste, silent, obedient, and subordinate. At the beginning of the 17th century, the ideology of patriarchy, political absolutism, and gender hierarchy were reaffirmed powerfully by King James in The Trew Law of Free Monarchie and the Basilikon Doron; by that ideology the absolute power of God the supreme patriarch was seen to be imaged in the absolute monarch of the state and in the husband and father of a family. Accordingly, a woman’s subjection, first to her father and then to her husband, imaged the subjection of English people to their monarch, and of all Christians to God. Also, the period saw an outpouring of repressive or overtly misogynist sermons, tracts, and plays, detailing women’s physical and mental defects, spiritual evils, rebelliousness, shrewish ness, and natural inferiority to men.Yet some social and cultural conditions served to empower women. During the Elizabethan era (1558—1603) the culture was dominated by a powerful Queen, who provided an impressive female example though she left scant cultural space for other women. Elizabethan women writers began to produce original texts but were occupied chiefly with translation. In the 17th century, however, various circumstances enabled women to writeoriginal texts in some numbers. For one thing, some counterweight to patriarchy was provided by female communities—mothers and daughters, extended kinship networks, close female friends, the separate court of Queen Anne (King James’ consort) and her often oppositional masques and political activities. For another, most of these women had a reasonably good education (modern languages, history, literature, religion, music, occasionally Latin) and some apparently found in romances and histories more expansive terms for imagining women’s lives. Also, representation of vigorous and rebellious female characters in literature and especially on the stage no doubt helped to undermine any monolithic social construct of women’s mature and role. Most important, perhaps, was the radical potential inherent in the Protestant insistence on every Christian’s immediate relationship with God and primary responsibility to follow his or her individual conscience. Ther e is plenty of support in St Paul’s epistles and elsewhere in the Bible for patriarchy and a wife’s subjection to her husband, but some texts (notably Galatians 3:28) inscribe a very different politics, promoting women’s spiritual equality: “There is neith er Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Jesus Christ.” Such texts encouraged some women to claim the support of God the supreme patriarch against the various earthly patriarchs who claimed to stand toward them in his stead. There is also the gap or slippage between ideology and common experience. English women throughout the 17th century exercised a good deal of accrual power: as managers of estates in their husbands’ absences at court or on military and diplomatic missions; as members of guilds; as wives and motherswho apex during the English Civil War and Interregnum (1640-60) as the execution of the King and the attendant disruption of social hierarchies led many women to seize new roles—as preachers, as prophetesses, as deputies for exiled royalist husbands, as writers of religious and political tracts.1. What is the best title for this passage?[A]. Women’s Position in the 17th Century.[B]. Women’s Subjection to Patriarchy.[C]. Social Circumstances in the 17th Century.[D]. Women’s objection in the 17th Century.2. What did the Queen Elizabeth do for the women in culture?[A]. She set an impressive female example to follow.[B]. She dominated the culture.[C]. Which of the following is Not mention as a reason to enable women to originaltexts?[A].Female communities provided some counterweight to patriarchy.[B]. Queen Anne’s political activities.[C]. Most women had a good education.[D]. Queen Elizabeth’s political activities.4. What did the religion so for the women?[A]. It did nothing.[B]. It too asked women to be obedient except some texts.[C]. It supported women.。

Thomson,People s Square,Christmas,mid1970s,the ratio of,figure(%)等,以及被标注的超纲词汇,譬如coinage(造币),这类词非常便于大家将题干和对应文章联系起来。
2. 研究、报告、刊物名称等。
如:China Daily,report in 2011,New York Times等。
一般来说,领域专家、研究报告、刊物名称等经常出现在特定的段落中,定位起来非常容易。
3.形容词的最高级和一些副词,如best,worst,most,almost等。
4.承载主要信息的名词、形容词、动词(短语)等。
如:diploma, reforms,shortage,immigration,beneficial,incline to等。
5.人名和地名这一类信息,会在许多选项和段落中出现,大家对于这些信息一定要注意,不要轻易作为关键依据。
二、同义转换这种情况就是对文段中心句的同义转述,有些本身就是段落中心句,只是替换了个别词。

Information in long-term memory can be remembered at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, and native-speaking students. To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered, each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in theirshort-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.6. The history of industrial development abounds with examples. In 1870, horses and mules were the prime source of power on U.S. farms. One horse or mule was required to support four human beings a ratio that remained almost constant for many decades. At that time, had a national commission been asked to forecast the population for 1970, its answer probably would have depended on whether its consultants were of an economic or technological turn of mind. Had they been “economists”, they would probably have projected the 1970 horses or mulepopulation to be more than 50 million. Had they been “technologists”, they would have recognized that the power of steam had already been harnessed to industry and to learn and ocean transport. They would have recognized further that it would be the prime source of power on the farm. It would have been difficult for them to avoid the conclusion that the horse and mule population would decline rapidly.16. According to the passage, what supplied most of the power on U.S. farms in 1870?A. AnimalsB. HumansC. EnginesD. Water17. Which of the following is NOT mentioned by the author as a consequence of new technological developments?A. Older technologies die away.B. The quality of life is Improved.C. In the second paragraph, the author suggests that “economists” would .A. plan the economy through yearly forecastsB. fail to consider the influence of technological innovationC. value the economic contribution of farm animalsD. consult the national commission on the economy20. What is the author’s attitude toward changes brought on by technological innovations?A. He is excited about them.B. He accept them as natural.C. He is disturbed by them.D. He questions their usefulness.Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:This semester I began to have a series of teacher nightmares, something that had not happened to me for years, not since my first year of teaching when I was in a perpetual state of dread. I would be rushing to get to class on time, trying to gather up notes from a maelstrom of papers on my desk, not certain what subject we were covering today, indeed not even certain what course I was teaching. My heart was pounding. I was late. I would not find my notes. A hundred people were waiting for me in the classroom, their pens poised to take down my every syllable, and I had nothing to say. Them Mr. Winthrop’s big blonde face with those dark eyes would loom at the door of my office, and with that mocking grin, he would say, “Professor, the class is waiting for you,” and I would faint dead onto the floor. Or sometimes in my dream I would make it to the podium (讲台), start to lecture on some aspect of criminal law or causation, only to have Mr. Winthrop raise his hand, and without even waiting to be called upon, presumably ask a question. Presumably because I could not make out his words. I could see his mouth moving underneath his baseball cap, and muffled sounds resounded in my ears, but I could not understand him. All eyes in the classroom were on me, and my students began to laugh, but not Mr. Winthrop. He continued to move his mouth, and I felt as if I was watching TV with the sound off except that my head was all a buzz with the laughter and the shuffling of feet as my students exited in disgust. Again, I ended the nightmare by fainting dead away onto the floor, and then I would wake up, my sheets damp from desperation. It was enough to make a man get out of bed and mix a drink at four in the morning even if he had the eighto’clock class.16. 南京大学外语-四级密卷.
南京大学外语Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blam e them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that th ey are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems -and thatthey have no sense of humour, at least in parent-child relationships.I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairsty les, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from th e adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create aculture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or enterta iners or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents, this gives the m additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a smallway, and that they are leaders in style and taste.Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to appr ove of what you do. If they approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own agegroup. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog; you cannot win but at least you keep your honour. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under you r parents’ control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be respo nsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that theywill give you the authority to do what you want to do.21. The author is primarily addressing ____.A) parents of teenagersB) newspaper readersC) those who give advice to teenagersD) teenagers22. The first paragraph is mainly about ____.A) the teenagers’ criticism of their parentsB) misunderstandings between teenagers and their parentsC) the dominance of the parents over their childrenD) the teenagers’ ability to deal with crises23.Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles mainly because they ____.A) want to show their existence by creating a culture of their ownB) have a strong desire to be leaders in style and tasteC) have no other way to enjoy themselves betterD) want to irritate their parents24. Teenagers do not want their parents to approve of whatever they do because they ____.A) have already been accepted into the adult worldB) feel that they are superior in a small way to the adultsC) are not likely to win over the adultsD) have a desire to be independent25. To improve parent-child relationships, teenagers are advised to be____.A) obedientB) responsibleC) cooperativeD) independentPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. He was a funny looking man with a cheerful face, good natured and a great talker. H e was described by his student, the great philosopher Plato, as “the best andmost just and wisest man”. Yet this same man was condemned to death for his belief s. The man was the Greek philosopher, Socrates, and he was condemned for not beli eving in the recognized gods and for corrupting young people. The second charge ste mmed from his association with numerous young men who came to Athens from all over the civilized world to study under him.Socrates method of teaching was to ask questions and, by pretending not to knowthe answers, to press his students into thinking for themselves. His teachings had unsurpassed influence on all the great Greek and Roman schools of philosophy.Yet, for all his fame and influence, Socrates himself never wrote a word.Socrates encouraged new ideas and free thinking in the young, and this was frighten ing to the conservative people. They wanted him silenced. Yet, many were probably s urprised that he accepted death so readily.Socrates had the right to ask for a lesser penalty, and he probably could have won over enough of the people who had previously condemned him. But Socrates, asa firm believer in law, reasoned that it was proper to submit to the death sentence. So, he calmly accepted his fate and drank a cup of poison hemlock in the presence of his grief-stricken friends and students.26. We must remember how differently men have thought and acted in different times. We must always keep an open mind, ready to receive and weigh new evidence. If we grasp this idea, we will never think that a historian issomeone who can remember dates. That childish idea is like calling a man a statesma n because he can remember the names of voters in his district. A waiter could remember more names and a telephone operator more numbers than the greatest histori an.The true historian is not content to take all his facts from other historians. Toda y he makes sure that his statements are based on sound “documents” or “sources”which go back to the time of the facts themselves. But the historian needs always to be in his guard not to be misled by his sources.A document may not be a real one. Its author may be lying on purpose forsome reasons. He may be so greatly influenced by national, religious, party or pers onal backgrounds as to be totally unfair to the other side. If honest, he maybe misinformed as to the facts and mistaken in his inferences.Anyone who reads the accounts published in the different countries concerning the c auses and results of wars will realize that the historian needs caution and trainin g in handling these sources. The trained historian asks first: “Did this writer mean to tell the truth?” and second; “Was he in a position or frame of mind to tell the truth even if he wants to?” Every statement must be patiently weighed and tested and combined with all other available information in order to get at the truth.3l.A “historica1ly minded” researcher ____.A) always keeps an open mind to historyB) looks at one historical event without relating it to anotherC) sees things from a single point of viewD) refuses to accept new evidence32.In Paragraph l the author means to illustrate that ____.A) different men think and act differentlyB) the study of history is not merely a matter of remembering datesC) a statesman can remember the names of voters in his districtD) a waiter can remember more names than the great historians33.The true historian should base his statements on ____.A) findings of other historiansB) documents created at the present timeC) his own inferencesD) sound historical materials34.Which of the following is the topic of Paragraph 3?A) Some historical documents may not be real.B) Some authors may not be honest.C) Historians should be careful about their sources.D) Historians may be influenced by their own backgrounds.35. It is emphasized in the last paragraph that ____.A) wars are accounted for differently in different countriesB) the historian needs caution and training in dealing with his sourcesC) some writers may not be telling the truthD) some writers may not be in a position or frame of mind to tell the truthPassage FourQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Friedrich Dobl, a Yugoslav working in Germany, was fed up with traffic jams. An old ambulance was for sale. The red cross had been removed. But not the flashing light, and the siren. He tried the light. It flashed magnificently. He tried the siren. That too sounded impressive. He bought the ambulance and opened up for himself a dre am world of motoring. It began early in the morning, all his luggage in the back of the ambulance and motorway in Germany looking reasonably clear. Other cars stopped and drivers waved him ahead to an open road all his own. In record time he crossed the border into Austr ia. The big bluff was working. Police even waved him through the confusion caused b y an accident. But then the Yugoslav made his beg mistake. Until then he had only stopped for petr ol. During television’s fir st 20 years, deaf people missed most of the fun. They could not hear what was being said and had to guess.Deaf people who watched television liked sports and action shows, but they were disappointed with other programs. If there was a lot of dialogue, deaf viewers coul dn’t follow the plot. Even the most skilled lip-readers could only catch partof the talking. This frustrated many deaf people. In the late 1960s, a man started experimenting. Malcom Norwood thought that deafpeople could enjoy television programs, too. He wanted to develop captions forthe programs. Norwood worked for the federal government’s Media Services and Capti oned Films Division at the Bureau of Education of the Handicapped.Norwood surveyed many hearing Americans. He wanted to see how they felt about seein g captions on the television screen. Too many people were against the idea. Norwood realized he had to develop another way of captioning - one that would notbother hearing people. In October of 1971, Norwood’s office signed a contract with WGBH-TV, a public tele vision station in Boston. WGBH was hired to experiment with captions. They agreed t o make a captioned television program for Norwood. That program was made. It was sh own on television and at a special convention. The type of captions made by WGBH could be seen on any television. No special equip ment was needed. These were called “open captions”.Later, a new machine was invented. This device was made to send signals on a specia l part of the television picture. The signals could be captions. If a familyhad another kind of machine in their home or in their TV set, then the captions (or signals) would appear on their television screen. Without the machine, no capti ons would be seen. That special machine is called a decoder. It receives the signals transmitted from the television station. Captions that require a decoder are called “closed captions”.S1 During television’s first 20 years, deaf people missed most of the funbecause they ____.S2 Deaf people who watched television did not like programs other than sports and a ction shows because ____.S3 In the late 1960s, Malcom Norwood thought that deaf people could enjoytelevision programs with the help of ____.S4 According to the survey conducted by Norwood, hearing people’s attitude toward captions was ____.S5 A decoder is a machine to ____.S6 “Open captions” are captions that ____.S7 “Closed captions” are captions that ____.S8 The advantage of the way of closed captions may be the fact that ____ .Part ⅤWriting (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a letter to the president of your university.
