高中英语 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Warming Up Reading
England, Scotland, Wales, Great Britain refer to different parts of the UK. The British Isles include many islands not even part of the UK.
The diverse (多种多样的) history of England, Scotland and Wales has led to very different cultural traditions. The Scots and Welsh have right to feel aggrieved (受侵害的) whenever the term “England” is used wrongly to mean all three.

Unit 2
The United Kingdom
英格兰还是联合王国?
England or the United Kingdom? When people say England, they sometimes mean Great Britain, sometimes the United Kingdom, sometimes the British Isles—but never England. Why is England or the UK sometimes called Britain? “England” is sometimes, wrongly, used in reference to the whole United Kingdom, the entire island of Great Britain (or simply Britain), or indeed the British Isles. This is not only incorrect but can cause offence (冒犯) to people from other parts of the UK.

AI sometimes feel left out with my friends at the party. What can I do?— SusanAlice: Speak to your best friend before you arrive and ask her to make sure you don’t get left out of the group. That way, she’ll know to include you in all the fun. Make the effort to speak to some other people at the party. You might even make a new friend or two.Sometimes I think parties get boring and I want to go home!— JennyAlice: Even a great party will drag if you’re not enjoying yourself. Making the effort to dance and have a chat with your friends will beat the boredom! You don’t have to stay to the very end of the party. Our school is having a Christmas dance pa rty but I’m really shy. Shall I go or not?— EmmaAlice: Part of you would like to go to the party, so give it a try. Let good friends know how you feel and make sure you’ll have people to dance with when the evening comes. I always have to leave earlier than the rest of my friends and I get really angry with my dad.— AnnyAlice: Talk with your dad and let him know how you feel. It feels hard to have different rules from your friends but don’t worry too much — your friends are probably picked up soon after you anyway.21. Alice advises Susan to _____.A. stay with her friendsB. ask her friend for helpC. leave the party at onceD. make fun of her friends22. The underlined word “drag” is closest in meaning to “_____”.A. failB. improveC. be boringD. be pleasant23. What worries Anny?A. Her dad is strict with her.B. She always argues with her dad.C. Nobody picks her up after the party.D. She can’t go to the party with her friends.24. Where can you probably find the text?A. In a notice.B. In a guidebook.C. In a famous novel.D. In a popular magazine.BWith the development of the economy, loose change (零钱) is often ignored by most of us. We have forgotten how those little, round metal pieces can add up. However, if you were a kid that had to clean the house for extra money, you’ll understand how important it is.When I was a kid, I knew my parents could afford whatever I wanted, but Dad made me work for things that were “wants”. I knew Dad always carried a lot of change in his pockets. He had taught me that enough pennies (便士) would still get me what I wanted in the end.Dad had his favorite reclining chair (躺椅) in his room where he would go after a long day at work. When he reclined in the chair, the change would fall from his pockets onto the floor under the chair, which was really a good chance for me to collect pennies. I’m sure he realized he had empty pock ets when he took his clothes off, but he never said anything and never stopped sitting in the chair. My kids learned early that change worked just as well as dollars and they also knew their dad saw no value in change. In fact, he saw it as a pain-in-the-neck so instead of asking him for money, they always asked if they could have his change.Whenever I see a penny on a floor, I always pick it up. They’ve come in handy over the years, like at the check stand when someone needs a penny to check out, or my children are twelve cents short of their bus fare — little things, but important things.25. Why is loose change ignored at present according to the author?A. Because people find it is of no use.B. Because loose change is often noisy.C. Because loose c hange isn’t easy to carry.D. Because people’s lives have improved a lot.26. Why did the author’s father ask her to work for her own “wants”?A. To help her earn a lot of money.B. To tell her that pennies add up.C. To save enough money for future use.D. To let her know it was hard to earn money.27. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that the author’s father _____.A. didn’t care about loose changeB. taught the author a good lessonC. was really a hard-working personD. was too tired to look after his child28. The underlined word “pain-in-the-neck” means that the author’s husband _____.A. was really richB. was very generousC. had a problem with his neckD. paid little attention to changeCToday, the world’s diversity (多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops. There are now 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die. Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war. Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever! The organization Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back-up, or extra copy, of all the world’s seeds. Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库). Organizations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, “If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault wil l be worth way more than it cost.”29. Seed banks are built to _____.A. research on seedsB. produce new seedsC. protect crop diversityD. increase the number of seeds30. Compared with other seed banks, the global seed bank _____.A. was built by the governmentB. is more welcomed by farmersC. is mainly used by great scientistsD. can provide a good environment for seeds31. What can we learn about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?A. It helps to pay the shipping cost.B. No one can take seeds out of there.C. There are no fees to store seeds there.D. It mainly receives seeds from farmers.32. What is Cary Fowler’s attitude towards the Seed Vault?A. He feels it is very important.B. He is surprised at it.C. He thinks it costs too much.D. He is uncertain about it.DThe word “invent” comes from a Latin word which means “to find.” Garrett Morgan, an African-American, was one such inventor. His first job was repairing machines in a factory. By accident, he had invented the hair straightener. He sold his products and then continued with his career as an inventor.Every day, Garrett Morgan watched traffic become more dangerous. Cars, bicycles and walkers all competed to cross the street. Police officers made simple “stop / go” signals at busy crossroads, but cars, bicycles and walkers still rushed into the crossroads at different speeds and many crashed into each other. One day he saw a traffic accident between a car and a bicycle at a busy crossroads. The problem with the traffic light, he realized, was its poor design: the traffic signal lacked a transition (过渡) between “stop” and “go.”Morgan invented a new traffic signal that added a “caution (警告)” ligh t that made traffic move more smoothly and safely. His traffic light stood on a T-shaped pole (杆) with arms that flashed a red light to stop traffic in all directions, allowing walkers to cross safely. After walkers crossed, traffic could only go in one direction.Soon, cities everywhere wanted his traffic light. In 1923, a popular electric company paid Morgan $40,000 to make and sell his invention. Traffic lights today work in the same basic way.The traffic light is Morgan’s most famous invention. In 1963, the United States government gave Garrett Morgan an award for his life-saving idea.33. What can we learn about Garrett Morgan from Paragraph 1?A. He worked in a factory all his life.B. He led a hard life in his early years.C. He made money from hair straighteners.D. He dreamed of being an inventor when he was a child.34. What made Morgan invent the traffic light?A. A traffic accident.B. A car driver’s advice.C. Worry about his safety.D. Hard work of police officers.35. According to the text, Garrett Morgan’s traffic light _____.A. made cars move more slowlyB. needed no help from police officersC. was special because it had a “caution” lightD. was very different from the ones we use today第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Unit 2 The United Kingdom reading课时作业Ⅰ. 阅读理解ADid anyone find the names of “Great Britain”, “the United Kingdom”, “England”and “the British commonwealth” which have the same meaning? Strictly speaking, these names all refer to something different. None of them are exactly the same as any of the others. The British isles(群岛)refer to the main islands andseveral thousand small ones as well, which you can see on themap. Great Britain or Britain, refers to the larger of the twomain islands. But the word “Britain” is often used as a shortform for the United Kingdom or you call it the UK.Now as for England, it refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and the official name of the country, which many people popularly refer to England. Finally, the Britain commonwealth is the usual name for what is left of the British Empire. This change shows the weakening of British Empire and the rising of the national liberation movements throughout the world today.【语篇概述】本文主要讲了英国多个不同的名字在地理或行政区划上的不同。
