All he did after work was taking care of his family.I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the fierce summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days. Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting together a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I noticed that my dad hadforgotten some things that we discussed lately. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short. Several hours later that day I received a call. My father was in the hospital. Immediately, I bought a plane ticket and on my way I was thinking about all the occasions I missed to have a talk with my dad. By the time I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who did not have time for a conversation with me. I realized how little I knew about my dad, his deepest thoughts and his dreams. After his death I learned much more about him and even more about myself. All he ever wanted was my time. They have found that night owls are generally brighter and wealthier than those who are able to get up early in the morning.Experts from the University of Madrid carried out tests on around 1, 000 teenagers and found that those who preferred to stay up late proved the kind of intelligence associated with honored jobs and higher incomes. “Larks” or “morning people”, however, ofte n acquired better exam results, possibly because lessons are held at the wrong time of a day for night owls. The researchers examined the habits and body clocks of the youngsters to determine whether the liked to stay up late and sleep in later in the morning, or preferred to go to bed early and were at their peak in the morning. School performance and inductive intelligence, or problem solving, were measured and academic grades in the major subjects were also taken into account. The results showed that evening types scored higher than morning types on inductive reasoning, which has been shown to be a good estimate of general intelligence and a strong indicator of academic performance. They also had a greater capacity to think conceptually as well as analytically. Such abilities have been linked to innovative thinking, more admired occupations and better incomes.Famous night owls include President Trump, Obama, Charles Darwin. Winston Churchill. Keith Richards and Elvis Presley. George W. Bush, who is regularly in bed by 10 p.m., Thomas Edison Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice, who wakes at 4: 30 a.m., and Ernest Hemingway are among those known as larks. Jim Horne, a professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University, said, “E vening types tend to be the more active and creative types, the poets, artists and inventors, while the morning types are the deduces(推断者), as are often seen with civil servants and accountants.” A previous study of US Air Force recruits found that evening types were much better at thinking to solve problems than larks.8. What does the word “lark” mean in the text?A. A bird of prey that flies in the morning.B. A bird of prey that is a symbol of wisdom.C. A kind of person who goes to bed early and wakes up early.D. A kind of person who has honored jobs and higher incomes.9. What characteristics do night owls have?A. Night owls are much healthier, wealthier and wiser.B. Night owls are not good at inductive reasoning.C. Night owls stay up late and wake up early in the morning.D. Night owls are expert in analyzing and innovative thinking.10. From the passage, we can infer that ________.A. the early bird will catch the wormB. morning types have a tendency to do some creative jobsC. night owls can do better in the examinations if lessons are held in the right timeD. President Trump, Winston Churchill and George W. Bush are models of night owls11. According to the writer, what kind of job is an evening type likely to do in the future?A. A fashion designer.B. A social worker.C. An accountant.D. A government employee.DIf you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare,” “Samuel Johnson,” and “Webster,” but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English—William the Conqueror. Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scotch, whose language, though not the same as the Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic people, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would beclose to German. But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066, the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction(区别)between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating. When Americans visit Europe for the first time they usually find Germany more “foreign” than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually a Germanic language in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’s ambition.12. Before 1066, people in Britain mainly spoke ________.A. Welsh and ScottishB. Celtic and Old EnglishC. Anglo-Saxon and GermanicD. Celtic and Germanic13. How did William the Conqueror have a great effect on English?A. By defeating the Saxons.B. By speaking good English.C. By teaching people in Britain to speak English.D. By bringing French to Britain to greatly influence English.14. Why do Americans feel France is less foreign than Germany?A. There are more similarities between English and French.B. They know little of the English history.C. In France most of the advertisements appear in English.D. They know French better than German.15. What is the main idea of this passage?A. The history of Great Britain.B. The French effects on the English language.C. The difference between English and French.D. The great people who had effect on English.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

(2020·北京四中高一月考)Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 p.m. or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7-to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school. How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal. But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10-to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone.” says Dr Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing the levels of body chemicals called hormones not only makes teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also makes it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 p. m.Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 a. m. to 8: 30 a.m.Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.21.What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?A. Learning and sleeping problems.B. Teenagers sleep-related diseases.C. Activities to prevent sleeplessness .D. American kids’ sleeping habits.22.How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day?A. 7 hours.B. 10 hours.C. 8 hours.D. 18 hours.23.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?A. They are affected by certain body chemicals.B. They tend to do things that excite them.C. They follow their parents’ examples.D. They don’t need to go to school early.B(2020·衡水中学期中)Snowbirds are people who leave their homes when the temperature drops and head to warmer climates. They are mostly retirees and business owners who can afford to take the winter off. While the snow flies in the Northern states, they are enjoying golf, sailing and barbecues in mild temperatures in the South. Then, after winter passes, they return to their homes in the North. Most snowbirds are away from Canada and the Northern states between the middle of October and the end of November. They pack up and head to Florida, Alabama, Texas, California, and all of the other Southern states. Some may even go as far as Australia or Italy to escape the cold winter weather. There are special communities for snowbirds in many areas. Snowbirds are also offered special discounts in some restaurants, hotels and area attractions. Several states even have special snowbird resorts(度假胜地).There are several online communities and local resources to help snowbirds get set in their seasonal homes. Some snowbirds own homes both in the South and in the North. A few years ago, I was home for a visit when my mom, now in her early 70s, called me into her bedroom. We were about ready to leave for dinner. “I don’t know what to wear,” she complained. “You girls always look so good.”I paused in the doorway and looked at her, wondering if I’d misheard. “What do you mean?” I asked her. “You know what to wear.” “No,” she answered. “I don’t. Can you pick some for me?” I was so surprised. This was the same woman that, in 1989, told my younger sister she wasn’t allowed to leave the house wearing a pair of ripped(撕碎的)Jeans; the same woman that, in high school, called me while I was out at a party to ask if my hair was tied up. “You look better with it down.” she told me. Before I could answer I realized, suddenly, that my mother not only wanted my opinion, but needed it. I pulled a pair of blue jeans and a light blue sweater. “Wear this with your black shoes,” I told her. She did. My mother certainly doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. In fact, she still cares for my grandmother who lives with her. But with that question, my mother and I started the role reversal(转换)that happens to all parents and all children, from caregivers to receivers. Now, if I’m visiting or we’re together, it’s rare for her to wear anything without checking with me first. But every so often, it seems like she asks me just to be able to disagree with my answer and pick out something on her own. And when she does, I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it’s “great”, and sometimes it’s “awful”.28. How did the author react the first time her mother asked her for advice on clothes?A. She was happy to do something for her mother.B. She came to realize that her mother needed her care.C. She was worried that her mother was too old to live alone.D. She had no idea what was suitable for her mother.29. When the author gives her opinion about clothes, what does her mother do?A. She always accepts her suggestions happily.B. She sometimes chooses to follow her own ideas.C. She is often surprised by what the author says.D. She still shows uncertainty about what to wear.30. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this article?A. She wants to show what it is like to have a strict mother.B. She wants to remind readers to visit their parents often.C. She wants to stress her mother’s great influence on her.D. She wants to show how the roles of parents and their children reverse.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

【新教材】人教版(2019)高一英语必修第一册Unit4 单元测试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解In late March, storms and rapid temperature shifts in several Midwestern states led to unexpected flooding. For Nebraska, it was the worst disaster in the state's history: 76 of 93 counties have had to apply for aid, with damage approximately $1.3 billion. Many families are receiving assistance for repairs to homes, farms, and infrastructure (基础设施).Although it has been a destructive time for Midwestern farm counties, many volunteers have joined in despite the dangers. For volunteer Lynn Caniglia, the feeling that comes from "helping families" is all the payment she needs.Another girl called Jeanie Goodhile talked about her efforts. She raised disabled animals on her farm in Valley, Nebraska. The floods ruined her land and nearly killed all she owned. "When the water came, I had 20 minutes to save all of my animals," Goodhile said. "When I attempted to get some animals out of their pens(畜栏), they wouldn't come out." Across the Midwest, three people and more than 2.3 million animals died in the flooding. Goodhile is grateful for the first volunteers who risked their lives to save others.Volunteers from as far away as Ohio and North Carolina rescued people trapped and are now providing supplies to those in need and helping to rebuild. "I assess homes to see if they're safe to live in after all of the damage," said volunteer Steve Metcalph. "Several steps need to be taken to ensure that a house is safe and habitable after flooding. Cleaning out a home and making repairs after flood damage can be a tough, complex process. Roads, bridges, and highways were also damaged. Most of the highways and roads have reopened, but nearly one million homes are still awaiting clean-ups."1.Which of the following best describes Nebraska's situation in late March?A. Terrible.B. Changeable.C. Pleasant.D. Effective.2.What happened to Jeanie Goodhile's farm?A.Her efforts to save some animals were in vain.B.The flood didn't kill any animal on the farm.C.There was no volunteer to help save the farm.D.She had no time to save the animals on the farm.3.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Survivors in the floodB.A joint effort to save animalsC.The government's great contributionsD.Volunteers helping victims through floodThe scientific study of earthquakes is comparatively new. Until the 18th century, few factual descriptions of earthquakes were recorded, and the natural causes of earthquakes were not well understood. The earliest earthquake for which we have descriptive information occurred in China in 1177 BC. The Chinese earthquake catalog (目录) describes several dozen large earthquakes in China during the next few thousand years. Earthquakes in Europe were mentioned as early as 580 BC, but the earliest for which we have some descriptive information occurred in the mid-16th century. The earliest known earthquakes in the Americas were in Mexico in the late 14th century and in Peru in 1471, but descriptions of the effects were not well recorded. By the 17th century, descriptions of the effects of earthquakes were being published around the world. The most widely felt earthquakes in the recorded history of North America were a series that occurred in 1811-1812 near New Madrid, Missouri. A great earthquake, whose magnitude is reported to have been about 8, occurred on the morning of December 16, 1811. Another great earthquake occurred on January 23, 1812, and a third, the strongest yet, on February 7, 1812. Aftershocks (余震) were nearly continuous between these great earthquakes and continued for months afterwards. These earthquakes were felt by people as far away as Boston and Denver. Because the population in these regions was small, the destruction of human life and property was slight. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the most destructive in the recorded history of North America——the earthquake and the fire that followed killed nearly 700 people and left the city in ruins.1. When did published descriptions of the effects of earthquakes become popular in the world?A. In the 1300s.B. In the 1400s.C. In the 1500s.D. In the 1600s.2. What do we know about the earthquakes in 1811-1812 in North America?A. They killed a large number of people.B. They occurred in San Francisco.C. They could be felt very far away.D. They almost destroyed entire cities.3. What can we infer from the passage?A. Few earthquakes were scientifically studied before the 18th century.B. Earthquakes can be avoided with the development of technology.C. Most of the early earthquakes caused little damage.D. People haven't found the causes of earthquakes so far.4. What's the best title for this passage?A. The scientific study of earthquakesB. Earthquakes in historyC. The effects of earthquakes on humansD. His interest in poetry was inspired by his father, who would write poems down, stick them on the wall of the kitchen and teach him to read them from a young age.Lei missed the opportunity of going to university due to frequent school transfers when he was growing up. Reciting poems not only enriches my knowledge, but also makes my job less boring," the courier said.In November, 2017, Lei went to Beijing and began recording the TV show after standing out from more than 70,000 people who signed up for the competition. After winning, Lei returned to Hangzhou and continues his delivery work and the memorizing of poems.Lei's outstanding performance during the final, and his inspirational story, have amazed Chinese audiences."His love of learning is so pure, it moved me to tears,"one netizen said "It always amazes me how some people simply hunger for knowledge," another shared.1.Why did Lei Haiwei have no chance to go to college?A.His family was very poor. .He was fascinated with poems.C.He was too busy to study. .He often changed schools.2.The underlined word "diminish" in the third paragraph can be replaced by "_______" .A.inspireB.increaseC.reduce .encourage3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tells us?A.Lei's work is delivering food for others.B.Lei’s daily life is highly stressful at present.C.Lei uses any available time to recite poems.D.Reciting poems improves his knowledge.4.How did people find Lei's story?A.Interesting.B.Inspiring.C.Fascinating.D.Shocking.When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them."I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh, dear," I said. "You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy, Mummy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too."I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. AStained Glass (彩色玻璃) ArtworkSainte Chapelle, FranceWhile many say that Paris' must-see cathedral (教堂) is Notre Dame de Paris, Sainte Chapelle should also be high up on the list. Louis IX ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world's finest stained glass windows. Unfortunately, as a result of the French Revolution, one third of the stained glass had to be replaced. The Chicago Cultural Centre, USAWhile the Windy City might not house the nation's winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world's most eye-catching displays of stained glass. Today's Chicago Cultural Centre, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-feet-tall Tiffany glass dome (圆屋顶), which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.Erawan Museum,ThailandThe Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks, all of which are displayed within the building's three floors, said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. The shiny stained glass is on the second floor, which museum owner Khun Lek Viriyapant considers to be the human level. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech RepublicWhile the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. According to a popular story, tea was discovered by Shennong in 2737 BC when a leaf from a nearby shrub (a low woody plant) fell into the water Shennong was boiling. Tea is deeply woven into the history and culture of China. The Chinese have a saying: “Firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day.” Though tea is the last on the list, we still can see its importance in daily life. A simple meal in Chinese is Cu Cha Dan Fan, namely coarse (粗糙的) tea and tasteless dinner. Even a simple meal is finished off with tea.For the Chinese, tea drinking and tasting are not parallel. Tea drinking can help keep up one's spirit while tea tasting has cultural meaning. Tea and tea sets shouldmatch surroundings such as the breeze, the bright moon, pines, bamboo and snow. All these show the goal of Chinese culture: the harmonious unity of human beings with nature.Tea is compared to personal characters. Its flavour (味道) is pleasant, low-key and lasting. A friendship between gentlemen is also like a cup of tea. With a cup of tea in hand, enjoying the green leaves in a white china cup, you will feel the peace. Fame, wealth and other earthly concerns are far away.Similarly, tea-drinking habits vary in different parts of China. Generally, flowering tea is popular in northern China; green tea is preferred in eastern China, and black tea is fit for people in Fujian and Guangdong. Green tea is the most popular type of tea consumed in China. Green tea usually loses its flavour within a year while the flavour of black tea can remain for several years. For this reason, black tea has long been an article of trade. It still accounts for over ninety percent of all tea sold in West. Tea is commonly available in Chinese restaurants and grocery shops worldwide.28.Why does the writer use the Chinese saying in the second paragraph?A.To show the history of tea.B.To explain the Chinese saying.C.To show the tea's role in Chinese culture.D.To express the writer's love for tea.29.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “parallel”?A.Different. B.Similar.C.Ordinary. D.Traditional.30.Why has black tea been long traded as goods?A.It has health benefits.B.It tastes better than other tea.C.Its flavour is preferred by the West.D.Its flavour can be kept for a long time.31.What is the text mainly about?A.Tea culture in China.B.Tea and personal characters.C.The popularity of tea drinking in China.D.The development of tea drinking in China.Time, wars and natural disasters have a bad effect on the artistic and cultural objects in the world.More than 1,000 years ago, a fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. In 1755, an earthquake destroyed Ribeira Palace in Lisbon, Portugal, along with artworks inside. In modern times, the Taliban destroyed the huge Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan. As we all know, museums play an important part in our daily lives. They keep evidence of culture and history and exhibit great works. A major goal of most museums in the world is to make sure that important historical objects do not disappear forever. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, holds 1,250 pieces of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. These objects have inspired artists and historians for many years. So the museum is working to make a complete and permanent (永久的) record of the artworks. The project is an effort of both the museum and the scientists from Indiana University in the United States. The team is using technology to create digital copies (数字复制品) of the Uffizi's ancient sculptures.“The process is called photogrammetry. At one time, this process was slow and expensive. But not anymore,” said Professor Robert Frischer. He said photogrammetry is now much faster and cheaper. Now they can gather 3D data (数据) on a life-size sculpture in half an hour and they can process the data just in a couple of hours. The images allow the viewer to examine the sculpture from all sides. And when the viewer zooms in (用变焦距镜头放大), the image becomes clearer. The Uffizi hopes to have the collection completed and available on the Internet soon.32.What can we learn about some artworks?A.They have been badly damaged.B.They were destroyed by accident.C.They were not protected by humans.D.Most of them are kept in Italy now.33.Why do the Uffizi Gallery and Indiana University work together?A.To build the largest museum.B.To create long-lasting artworks.C.To introduce some ancient sculptures.D.To inspire more artists and historians.34.What can we learn about photogrammetry?A.It is still expensive.B.It is a time-saving step now.C.It does great harm to the artworks.D.It was invented by Robert Frischer.35.What can we learn about the images?A.It's impossible to make them larger.B.They will take the place of real sculptures.C.People can enjoy them online in the future.D.They can only show the front of the sculpture.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster. One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. However, this was so far the biggest. The cloud of dust turned day into night. Some trees were downed and gardens were destroyed and it cut off the power of thousands of local people along the area, but luckily no death happened. A number of people's pools became dirty with dust. People who lived in Phoenix for more than 40 years said that this was the first time they had experienced this huge dust storm. It could greatly influence people's health. The big dust cloud started in Tucson traveling north across the desert. The huge storm ran up to 60 miles per hour. It was more than 100 miles wide and a mile high. Besides Phoenix and nearby cities, the storm also reached Yuma area in southwestern and far western Arizona. It reduced the visibility (能见度) in these areas, putting off the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The storm only takes place in Arizona, the Sahara Desert and areas of the Middle East, because of the dry environment and large amounts of sand. Some suggest playing music for your houseplants, having conversations with them, or even giving them a gentle touch now and then. Most of these practices are probably more for the benefit of the gardener than the garden, and generally harmless enough but except the last one. Your plants really dislike it when you touch them.A new study out of the La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food has found that most plants are extremely sensitive to the touch, and even a light touch can significantly stunt(遏制)their growth. “The lightest touch from a human, animals, insects, or even plants' touching each other in the wind, can cause a huge gene response in the plant,”said Jim Whelan, who led the new study. “Within 30 minutes of being touched, 10% of the plan t's genome(基因组)can be changed. This involves a huge expenditure(消耗)of energy which is taken away from plant growth. If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30%.”Whelan and his team are still trying to find out why plants respond, at the genetic level, so strongly. They do have some theories, however. “We know that when an insect lands on a plant, genes are activated(激活)to prepare the plant for defending itself against being eaten,” said Dr. Yan Wang, co-author of the study.Until more research is done, it's just a guess at this point. Still, the findings might already lead to new methods for how agriculturalists deal with their crops, to best promote healthier growth. It's worth noticing that while the study has found that plants often respond to just a single touch in negative ways, it's really repeated touch that causes lasting stunted growth. That's because the plants are looking for patterns in the touching, to tell harmful touch from random touch. So it doesn't matter if you accidentally brush up against a bush during a walk through the woods.12.How is the passage mainly developed?A.By comparing.B.By giving examples.C.By listing numbers.D.By showing results of studies.13.Why can touching stunt a plant growing according to the study?A.It leads to the plant's energy expenditure.B.It makes the plant sensitive to threats.C.It causes a genetic disorder in the plant.D.It prevents the plant absorbing nutrients.14.What's the importance of the study by Whelan and his team?A.It gives us more useful gardening tips.B.It helps find ways to ensure plants' healthy growth.C.It contributes to the further study on genes.D.It uses data to warn people not to touch plants.15.What is the passage mainly about?A.Something is done to help plants grow.B.Plants' genome can be changed easily.C.Plants don't really like to be touched.D.What we do every day may destroy plants.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

【新教材】人教版(2019)高一英语必修第一册 Unit 4 单元测试卷学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、阅读理解Stages of Hurricane: Simple Storms Grow Into GiantsA storm progresses through four different stages before it is actually considered a hurricane. First is a tropical disturbance (热带扰动), which has thunderstorms and rotating (旋转) winds. Next is a tropical depression (热带低气压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour. A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour. Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface of ocean water. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm. What's Your Name, Hurricane?Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them. Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean. Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma. Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men. Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters. For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex (male), Bonnie (female), Colin (male), Danielle (female), Earl (male) and so on...There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one.1. What happens when a hurricane crosses over land?A.It breaks apart and forms tornadoes.B.It returns to the ocean afterwards.C.It moves more quickly.D.It becomes less powerful.2.The underlined word "alternate" in paragraph 4 means "_____" .A.take turns betweenB.carry one fromD.cause trouble to3.What do we know about the hurricanes?A.Six common hurricane names are often used.B.An old name will be replaced every year.C.Most of them are deadly and costly.D.They didn't have official names until 1953.After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children's questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children's behaviour.Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing(不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts(爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child's reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it's OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when they answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favourite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.1. The underlined phrase "contend with" in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by "_______".A. deal withB. make upC. put offD. turn back2. When children ask the same question again, parents should _______.A. read a favourite story to comfort themB. ask them to help do some houseworkC. be patient and answer the question againD. take them out to play games3. Which of the following pieces of advice is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. Keep a close watch on children's behaviour.B. Tell the children they are safe.C. Tell the children you love them.D. Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake.D. Children react in the same way as adults do to an earthquake.Last Sunday, an earthquake struck the Napa Valley area of northern California. It happened in the middle of the night, becoming the strongest earthquake to strike the Napa Valley in 15 years. No one was killed, but many people were treated in hospitals.I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, "We have so much, and these poor people in trouble now have nothing. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys."Oh, dear," I said. "You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy, Mummy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too."I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0.There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours. The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel towards the famous landmark. My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer-something like, "Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father." Minutes later, I was safe outside.1. AOn my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh-grader where my class was.And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the po ol.”I found out five minutes later that we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either!Besides that,I didn’t have any trouble with the older kid.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school.I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before.I have gotten an A,and not remembered anything later.I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more.Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year.If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful! While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high schools.I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will reg ret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The“friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, butdon’t follow their footsteps.Create you r own path in life and make your own decisions.21.What does the author think of high school?A.It requires hard work.B.There are very few activities.C.It’s hard to meet new people there.D.There isn’t enough time for homework.22.The author advises high school students to .A.give up sportsB.choose useful classesC.try their best to get good gradesD.get ready for tests the night before23.The last paragraph mainly tells us .A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smokingB.about the importance of making friendsC.not to go to any party in high schoolD.not to lose ourselves in high schoolBAs a kid, Joanna Buckley wasn't interested in science—until she had a chance to try it. That happened when she got a chemistry set as a gift.“Ov er the course of a few weeks, I'd completed every experiment. But in the process, I polluted my parent's dining room carpet and burnt the kitchen worktop with the spirit burner,” she says. Now science is Buckley's job. She works in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield in England. “I realize, firsthand, how important it is to have something or someone to show you why science is so great,” she says. Now the good news is that citizen science appears.Citizen science takes the fun of experimenting a step further than Buckley's at-home experiments. That's because these experiments are real, looking for novel answers.“Compared with a oneoff experiment, what's cool about citizen science is thatstudents get that this has a purpose,” says Am y Prunuske, who teaches microbiology and immunology at a medical college. “Students want to do a good job, because they know scientists are going to use the new data in their own research.”Jennifer Long's job is to coordinate (协调) education and outreach. She agrees with Prunuske. “Kids like that it's real. And they like that it's important, and that it matters.” Citizen science projects have made big discoveries. One found a previously unknown galaxy cluster (星系团). Another project helped assess how much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan. And one of the first citizen science projects helped scientists learn where monarch butterflies go every winter. Some adults worry about teens losing interest in science. They hope that fun, exciting citizen science projects can help them keep engaged, Long says. And she has some evidence that it's working. “Last year, we did have a couple of students say, ‘I really think I want to be a scientist now’.”24.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?A.To show experiments can make teens interested in science.B.To prove failure is the mother of success in science.C.To state that Buckley has a talent for science.D.To praise Buckley for her strong will.25.Why is citizen science more fun?A.It needs to seek for new solutions.B.It carries out experiments frequently.C.It must carry out experiments in groups.D.It is supposed to handle complex problems.26.What can we know from what Prunuske said?A.She participated in the experiment.B.She took pride in what students took up.C.Citizen science is popular with students.D.Scientists are willing to employ students.27.What is Long's attitude towards citizen science?A.Concerned. B.Supportive.C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.CEarthquakes strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, but there’s no way to tell when.If an earthquake happens,it may cause many deaths, injuries and damage. So you need a good preparation ahead of time.Decide how and where your family will get together if separated.Choose an out-of-state friend or relative that the family members can call after the quake to report where they are and how they are.Know the safe places in each room:under the strong tables, desks,or against inside walls.Keep enough food, water and other things, including a flashlight,a radio, medicines and clothing.During the earthquake, you should keep a clear head and never be too nervous to know what to do.Protect your head and neck with your arms.If possible, take a book,a pillow or any other things to protect yourself from falling glass and ruins. If you are indoors, you must immediately lie under any strong furniture. If outdoors, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, walls or power poles. If you are in a narrow valley, move to the centre of it and look up for falling stones. If you are in a car, move to the side of the road and stop the car.Do not stop near buildings, power lines or on or under bridges.Stay in your car until the shaking stops.Do not move a badly injured person unless he is in great danger after the earthquake.Do not use the telephone immediately unless there is a serious injury or fire.Turn on your radio for instructions and news reports.Be prepared for aftershocks. If you want to leave your home, post a message inside your home telling your family members where you can be found.28.To prepare for an earthquake,we should make sure of .A.when an earthquake may happenB.the place where we can find our familyC.how to receive instructions and news reportsD.the money with which we can buy food and water29.If we are driving when an earthquake happens,we should .A.find a strong building to hide inB.leave the car as soon as possibleC.go on driving quickly to leave the areaD.move to the side of the road and stop there30.From the passage,we know that during an earthquake .A.we should keep calm and know what to do clearlyB.the trees and walls can protect us if we are outdoorsC.we should protect our necks with a pillow or a bookD.falling glass can be used to help us31.After an earthquake,we should .A.move an injured person quicklye the telephone immediatelyC.turn on the TV to get news reportsD.leave a message before leaving homeDAnts know when an earthquake is about to strike, researchers have discovered. Their behavior changes significantly prior to the quake and they resume normal functioning only a day after it. Gabriele Berberich of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany presented these findings on Thursday at the European Geosciences Union annual meeting in Vienna according to Live Science.Berberich and her colleagues discovered that red wood ants preferred to build their colonies right along active faults in Germany. They counted 15,000 mounds (土堆) lining the faults. These faults are the places where the earth violently bursts in earthquakes.Using a special camera that tracked changes in activity, Berberich and her colleagues tracked the ants round the clock for three years. They found that the ants' behavior changed only when the quake was over magnitude (震级) 2. There were 10 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 and 3.2 during this period, and many smaller ones. Humans can also sense quakes over magnitude 2 only.According to Berberich, normal ant activity consists of going about collecting food etc. during the day and resting in the night. But before an earthquake, the antsdidn't go back to their mound in the night and moved around outside it. This strange and abnormal behavior continued till a day after the earthquake, Berberich told a news conference, according to Live Science. How do ants know an earthquake is coming? Berberich suggested that they could either be picking up changing gas emissions or noting tiny changes in the Earth's magnetic fields (磁场). “Red wood ants have special cells which can detect changes in carbon dioxide levels. They also have special cells for detecting electromagnetic fields,” she said. Berberich and her colleagues are planning to continue the research in areas where there are more and bigger earthquakes.32.What's the meaning of the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph 1?A.Form. There may be nothing wrong with his mouth and tongue, but he cannot speak. This is because he cannot hear people, so he has nothing to imitate ( 模拟 ). He may try to make sounds himself, but cannot hear his own voice. However, even though he finds it difficult to speak and cannot hear, he can learn to read. Nowadays such persons can also be taught to speak because we have modern methods and equipment, but we did not have these when Helen Keller was born.Even with modern methods and equipment, however, it is not easy for deaf children to learnto speak, though most of them succeed. When a child is deaf and blind as well, it becomes much more difficult, though it is possible. Helen Keller was born in 1880. She became very ill at the ageof nineteen months. Medical knowledge was not as great then as it is now. She did not die but lost her sight and hearing. As a result, she became dumb as well. Her parents did their best to teach her, but she couldn speak’t by the age of six. Then, in 1887, a teacher, Miss Sullivan, came to live with her. Miss Sullivan herself had been blind. She had been partly cured. Though she could not see very well, she was not blind. Helen wasa difficult pupil at first, but in a month Helen had learned how to understand signs and how to make them herself. At last in spite of her great difficulties, Helen learned to read, write and speak, even though she was deaf and blind. She even went to college and had full education. She wrote many books, and though other people have written books about her, her own books are the onesthat best explain how it feels to be deaf, dumb and blind. Her best book isTheStoryofMyLife . Perhaps you have read it. Though it was written in 1902, it is still a very interesting book. Even if you have not read it, you may have heard of Helen Keller.72.A person who is deaf at birth is also dumb because ___.A. there ’ s something wrong with his mouth and tongue73.Deaf and dumb children can be taught to speak nowadays because ________.A. we have modern methods and equipmentB. these children are eager to learn tospeak C. they can hear something74.When Helen was nineteen months old, _______.A. she died of illnessB. she was healthyC. she was very illD. she began to learn to speak75.How long did it take Keller to understand signs?A. 2019年人教版英语高一上学期综合检测卷四
2019 年人教版英语高一上学期综合检测卷四一、阅读理解 (30 分 )1.(6 分)Envelope BudgetFrom McDonald's to Sonic, fast food had a bad effect on mywaistline and my budget. It was nothing to run to a drive-through to pick up a cold drink or a quick bite to eat. It was so easy to use my card fora small purchase. For me, I got a lot of satisfaction from fast food.Oneday I sat down and calculated that I was spending a surprising $40 a week on fast food. This was a lot of iced coffee and hamburgers!Instead of reducing my guilty pleasures,I decided to give myself a strong budget to reduce my consumption. Every Monday I placed an envelope with$20 in my purse. That was my fast food budget for the entire week. If there was anything left over at the end of the week, it was mine to save or spend. If I spent all of the moneyduring the week, there were no more fast food stops that week. The budget made me more mindful of my purchases. Instead of purchasing a large drink from Sonic, I would purchase a small. It was sillsatisfying but not nearly as pricey. Instead of eating a whole meal, Iwould pick the part that I actually wanted. Many days, the thought ofhanging onto the money for a special purpose meant more to me thanthe instant satisfaction of fast food. I never really felt unhappy becauseit was a conscious choice to spend or save with each purchase.Envelope budget kept mehonest. I had a clear idea how much money was spent each week on fast food purchases. I started to bring my lunches more often to save more money for the week. It was a fun challenge to see how much I could save every week.Changing the way I spent on fast food not only helped my budget, but improved my weight. In the first month I was able to get rid of 5 pounds by simply changing the way I approached spending on fast food. Now I ammore likely to bring my lunch than to buy it. I amnot upset, but empowered to make positive choices to improve my life.(1)According to Paragraph 1, the author ____.A.was fond of fast food very muchB.had no time to cook for herselfC.lived with a small amount of moneyD.got some benefits from using her card(2)The author set her envelope budget to ____.A.buy fast food at a good bargainB.save money to buy more fast foodC.get rid of the habit of eating fast foodD.make fast food spending under control(3)We can infer from the last paragraph that ____.A.it is unusual to make some changesB.the budget means a pressure on lifeC.envelope budget is good for healthD.it is hard to enjoy a healthy lifestyle(4)What is the passage mainly about?A.Why the author became addicted to fast food.B.How envelope budget changed the author's life.C.How fast food controlled the author's behavior.D.Why the author took envelope budget seriously.2.(8 分)In the 1760s, Mathurin Roze opened a series of shopsthat boasted ( 享有 ) a special meat soup called consomme.Although the main attraction was the soup, Roze's chain shops also set a new standard fordining out, which helped to establish Roze as the inventor of the modern restaurant.Today, scholars have generated large amounts of instructiveresearch about restaurants.Take visual hints that influence what we eat: diners served themselves about 20 percent more pasta (意大利面食 ) when their plates matched their food. When a dark-colored cake was served ona black plate rather than a white one, customers recognized it as sweeter and more tasty.Lighting matters, too. When Berlin restaurant customers ate in darkness, they couldn't tell how much they'd had: those given extra-large shares ate more than everyone else, but were none the wiser — they didn't feel fuller, and they were just as ready for dessert.Time is money, but that principle means different things fordifferent types of restaurants. Unlike fast-food places. Fine diningshops prefer customers to stay longer and spend. One way to encourage customers to stay and order that extra round: put on some Mozart (莫扎特 ). Whenclassical, rather than pop, music was playing, diners spent more. Fast music hurried diners out.Particular scents also have an effect:diners who got the scent of lavender( 薰衣草 ) stayed longer and spent more than those who smelled lemon, or no scent.Meanwhile, things that you might expect to discourage spending — "bad" tables, crowding, high prices—don't necessarily. Diners at bad tables — next to the kitchen door, say— spent nearly as much as others but soon fled.It can be concluded that restaurant keepers need not "be overly concerned about 'bad' tables," given that they're profitable. As forcrowds,a Hong Kong study found that they increased a restaurant's reputation, suggesting great food at fair prices. And doubling a buffet's price led customers to say that its pizza was 11 percent tastier.(1)The underlined phrase "none the wiser" in paragraph 3 mostprobably implies that the customers were ____.A.not aware of eating more than usualB.not willing to share food with othersC.not conscious of the food qualityD.not fond of the food provided(2)How could a fine dining shop make more profit?A.Playing classical music.B.Introducing lemon scent.C.Making the light brighter.ing plates of larger size.(3)What does the last paragraph talk about?A.Tips to attract more customers.B.Problems restaurants are faced with.C.Ways to improve restaurants' reputation.mon misunderstandings about restaurants.3.(8 分)Being seen in a fancy sports car or enjoying a beachholiday in a five-star hotel were once signs of having "made it".But a new study suggested that having people think of youas constantly busy and overworked is now a far better way to showsocial status.According to Harvard University in the US, people are increasingly leaning toward the phenomenon of "humblebragging (谦逊自夸 )". This is when people make a seemingly modest statement that actually draws attention to something they want to brag (吹捧) about.Phrases such as "I have no life" and "I desperately need aholiday" are now used to imply social standing, while ordering food andshopping online is the perfect way to prove to neighbors that you aresimply too busy and important to go to the supermarket."Movies, magazines, and popular TV shows often highlight (强调 ) the abundance ( 富裕 ) of money and leisure time among the wealthy,"said Neeru Paharia, an assistant professor at Harvard University."In recent years, featuring wealthy people relaxing by the poolor on a yacht ( 游艇 ), playing tennis or skiing and hunting are beingreplaced with advertisements featuring busy individuals who work longhours and have very limited leisure time," he said. "Displaying (how busy you are at work) and a lack of leisure time operates as a visible signal of status in the eyes of others."The researchers p ointed out that the Wall Street Journal's2016 advert campaign featured celebrities( 名人 ) complaining about their busy lives, with the slogan( 口号 ). "People who don't have time, make time to read the Wall Street Journal."The report, which was published in the Journal of Consumer Research, also found that brands that marketed themselves astimesaving were becoming increasingly high-status, because of thepeople who used them.According to the authors, this trend of humblebragging is dueto people's shit of focus —they now value "the preciousness und scarcity ( 稀缺 ) of individuals"more than "the preciousness and scarcity of goods"."Busy individuals possess desirable characteristics, leadingthem to be viewed as scarce and in demand," the authors concluded.(1)The main idea of this article is about ____.A.the trend of "humblebragging"B.characteristics of people who lead a busy lifeC.why people today are becoming increasingly busyD.why some people like to brag about their socialstatus(2)People today prefer to ____ to display their social status.A.share their passion for tennis or skiingB.show how fast-paced their work life isC.tell people about the wonderful holidays they takeD.show off their abundance of money and leisure time(3)The Wall Street Journal's 2016 advert campaign implies that____.A.busy people always have a better life than othersB.it's important to read newspapers however busy youareC.busy individuals should learn to managetheir timebetterD.a lack of time is a typical characteristic ofpeople of high social status(4)From the article we can conclude that America people today____.A.all brag about themselvesB.value individuals, the preciousness and scarcityC.order food and shop online to show they are richD.work long hours and don't have enough leisure time4.(8 分)Work and the Young: Generation Jobless"YOUNG people ought not to be idle ( 闲置的 ). It is very bad for them,"said Margaret Thatcher in 1984. She was right: there are few worse things thatsociety can do to its young than to leave them ignored.Yet more young people are idle than ever. The International Labour Organization reports that 75m (m=million)young people globally arelooking for a job.World Bank surveys suggest that 262m young people areeconomically inactive. The number of young people without a job is nearly as largeas the population of America (311m).Two factors play a big part. First, the long slowdown in theWest has reduced demand for labour, and it is easier to put off hiring youngpeople than it is to fire older workers. Second, in emerging economiespopulation growth is the fastest in countries with disordered labourmarkets, such as India and Egypt. One possible way to settle this problem is to stimulate growth. That is easier said than done in a world suffering from debt, and is anyway a possible answer. The countries where the problem is worst(such as Spain and Egypt)suffered from high youth unemployment even when their economies were growing. Throughout the recession (经济不景气 ), companies have continued to complain that they cannot find young people with the rightskills. This underlines the importance of two other solutions:reforming labour markets and improving education.Youth unemployment is often at its worst in countries with inflexible labour markets. High taxes on hiring, strict rules about firing, high minimum wages: all these help force young people to the street corner. South Africa has some of the highest unemployment, in part because it has powerful trade unions and inflexible rules about hiring and firing. Many countries with high youth unemployment rate have high minimum wagesand heavy taxes on labour. India has around 200 laws on work and pay.Across the OECD( 经合组织 ), people who left school at the earliest opportunity are twice as likely to be unemployed as university graduates. But it is unwise to conclude that governments should simply continue increasing the number of people who graduate from university. In bothBritain and the United States many people with arts degrees are findingit impossible to get appropriate jobs. In North Africa university graduates aretwice as likely to be unemployed as non-graduates.What matters is not just number of years of education people get, but its content. This means expanding the study of science and technologyand closing the gap between the world of education and the world ofwork-for example by upgrading vocational education and by building closer relations between companies and schools. Germany, which has the secondlowest level of youth unemployment in the rich world, owns long-historysystem of vocational schooling and apprenticeships (学徒制).The problem of youth unemployment has been getting worse forseveral years. But there are at last some reasons for hope. Governmentsare trying to address the mismatch between education and the labour market. Companies are beginning to take more responsibility for the young. Theworld has a real chance of introducing an education-and-training revolution worthy of the solution to the problem.(1)According to the passage, which of the following statements maythe author approve of?A.A flexible labour market is not enough to raiseyouth employment.B.As long as the economy grows youth unemploymentwill soon be settled.C.Firms fire more older workers than the young in the economic slowdown.D.Powerful trade unions and high minimum wages lead to high employment.(2)The author mentioned the German's education system in order to show____.A.rich countries are responsible for high youth unemploymentB.the problem of youth unemployment has been settledpanies have more responsibilities to settleyouth unemploymentD.the match between education and the labour market can reduce youth unemployment(3)What does the underlined phrase "vocational education" meanin Para.7?A.Technical training.B.Higher education.C.Moral education.D.Business courses.(4)The passage mainly talks about ____.A.the need for labour market revolutionB.possible ways to settle global youth unemploymentC.the relations between education and employmentD.factors contributing to low youth unemployment二、七选五 (10 分)5.(10 分)Taking a math test can be pretty stressful. know the material, you can still get the problem wrong.Evenif 1you.Therefore you'll improve your grades, as well as your math skills.Write it outYou can also check a math problem by writing everything out on paper. 2 . I work in the bank and I usually do my work over the phone and computer. This lady is a borrower of my bank, one of the people I serve. We have had several conversations about her borrowings. She is neither a woman that is of my mother’s age, nor a grandmotherly type of client, because men or women of that age are always very loving and they remind me what I should do. This woman is of my age.We have never met in person. She lives in New Jersey and I live in California. Her borrowings turned out great, and I didn’t worry even a little bit. To be honest, I think I just worked normally to finish my service. But every couple of months, she would email me a little note, telling me how I made a difference to her life, and how thankful she was for what I had done. I never expected that.I have a busy and stressful job. Every day, I meet many people and I offer the same service to them.I also keep a working relationship, with many. No one has done that for me. I don’t think I have done something different or helped her much. She just used her time and the most shining part in her heart to send me emails. I saw the beauty inside her.Everyone can be tired and lonely right now. The same is true of the woman. They’re already wet. They’re only in the pool for a handful of seconds, so it’s not like they need to get cleaned up. And doesn’t taking a shower serve the same purpose as sitting in a hot tub?Actually, that’s what Olympic divers usually do between dives as they know very well about the importance of warm-ups and cool-downs. So, what’s the actual reason? As it turns out, showers and hot tubs are used pretty interchangeably by the swimming pool. However, there is a need for both. First, let’s start with why divers need to take a shower between dives. It has to do with body temperature and keeping their muscles loose (放松的). As you can imagine, practicing dives in the pool, then having to keep your body warm in a shower, and then jumping off a 10-meter platform and into cold water couldn’t be comfortable for anyone.Going back and forth between these warm and cool temperatures can cause a divert muscles to tense or cramp up (痉挛), which can lead to injuries to the muscles. Showers allow an Olympic diver to recover and prevent that.In that way, showers and hot tubs serve the same purpose. A hot tub is generally used if you have a bit more time between dives and have already stretched. The shower walls on the pool deck can typically provide enough space for more divers at the same time, and they’re especially helpful for athletes who need to stretch or who only have a few minutes between dives. Just like Olympic swimmers depend on thick clothes to keep their muscles warm, Olympic divers rely on these methods to stay loose. If you ask me, it’s not a bad way to pass the time!8. What does the underlined word “proceed” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Fail.B. Continue.C. Stop.D. Afford.9. Why do the athletes need showers after diving?A. To folly clean their body.B. To rest and wait for the results.C. To avoid possible muscle injuries.D. To stop themselves from catching a cold.10. What does the last paragraph suggest?A. The shower walls are designed for divers in the final round.B. Olympic swimmers need to stay warm using hot tubs.C. Athletes usually do some activities to pass the time.D. Hot tubs are as important as showers for divers.11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?A. To tell us the difference between diving and swimming.B. To explain some little-known knowledge about divers.C. To compare cold showers with the hot bath.D. To provide some diving advice for us.DFlying someone one-way from London to New York City produces a lot of climate-warming greenhouse gas. But there is a new way to cut the climate influence of flying. Most planes crossing the Atlantic Ocean follow one of several fixed paths that are widely spaced. “Instead of having these fixed tracks which keep the planes apart, airlines can fly much more flexible routes (灵活的路线),” says Cathie Wells. She is a PhD student in mathematics. The aviation industry knows it has a high carbon footprint (碳排放量). To reduce that footprint, some people share their ideas. For instance, experts could redesign planes. Or airlines could choose fuels (燃料)from renewable sources, such as plants. But it takes decades and many billions of dollars to design, test and fly new planes and try new fuels.Taking more flexible routes, in contrast, can cut costs and energy right away. “Reducing fuel use is a win-win solution,” says Irene Dedoussi, who works at Delft University of Technology. It allows the aviation industry to save money on fuels while reducing carbon footprints. “Even savings of just one or two percent are generally considered important. Using something so simple to cut fuel use by one sixth is huge,” she said. Before that can happen, however, Wells needs to make a few changes. The researchers of her team will have to work out the best flight paths that consider scheduling issues.National Air Traffic Services (NATS) provides air-traffic control for the United Kingdom. It invited Wells to describe her new findings. Just one week after her team’s new study was published, NATS said it would change its flight-paths system. For now, NATS will be working with airlines to allow them to choose routes that would best limit their fuel use.12. What is Cathie Wells’ way to cut the climate influence of flying?A. Making changes to flight paths.B. Changing the design of planes.C. Using environment-friendly fuels.D. Improving the pilots’ driving skills.13. What’s the problem with the ideas on reducing carbon footprints in Paragraph 2?A. They require dangerous experiments.B. They are not supported by the public.C. They take a lot of time and can be costly.D. They are unable to reduce carbon footprints to the lowest.14. What do we know about Wells5 suggestion?A. It brings better service to passengers.B. It is helpful in reducing traffic jams.C. It has little influence on the aviation industry.D. It has big advantages but needs careful consideration.15. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?A. A solution to traffic problems.B. The growing interest in the study of planes.C. The influence of air travel on the environment.D. A new way to make future air travel greener.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I am 13, and I live in Chantilly, Va. Just yesterday, June 24, 1996, I was at home watching my sister, who is mentally handicapped. My father was at work while my mother and younger sister were at mom's office.I had noticed the clouds growing darker and the ones to the east were turning green. At first I thought nothing of it, but then on the TV, the weather reporter was announcing W1 a big thunderstorm warning, one that usually brings hail and heavy rain. After seeing that, I called my mother and told her about it. She told me I should not be worried because it was just a thunderstorm so we hung up P1. Then I looked outside and noticed W2 it was almost pitch black at 4:30. I took a flashlight (手电筒) because I was sure the power was going to go out any second. Then no sooner had I gotten back from getting the flashlight than P2 the weather reporter announced a Tornado Warning! I had never been in an actual tornado before, but I had seen some funnel clouds before in Montana.Suddenly I realized I had no time to lose and I had to try to get my sister down the stairs to the basement in a matter of minutes. I surprisingly got her down there with no trouble at all and I raced back up the stairs to get the cordless phone. When I got back downstairs my dad called and told me to get downstairs immediately. I told him I was already down there! He said OK and we talked for a few seconds and then we hung up.Then_through_the_basement_windows,_the_only_thing_I_could_see_was_when_lightning_struck.I do not recall hearing of any deaths, or too many injuries so I guess everyone got a good head start to run to their basements. Either they or we are all lucky.篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。
