Jimmy 立刻过去帮了那个老人的忙。
当Jimmy修完汽车的时候,那个老人说:“请允许我开车送你去参加面试,这是我仅能为你做到的了,我坚持这样做。
〞Jimmy

2013英语三级阅读理解模拟练习ATae kwon do(跆拳道) is the Korean martial(军事的)art of hand-to-hand combat(战斗).Maybe that should really be body—to—body combat because in tae kwon do the whole body must be trained to properly defend and attack. There are some similarities between tae kwon do and other martial arts. For example, tae kwon do uses quick straight-line moves which can also be found in Japanese martial arts, but tae kwon do also uses flowing circular moves like the type of moves found in Chinese martial arts. The main difference between tae kwon do and other martial arts is the powerful kicking technique which tae kwon do uses. This is where the name tae kwon do comes from.In Korean, tae means”to kick",kwon means"to strike with the hand",and do means”art".Therefore, tae kwon do can be translated as"the art of kicking and punching”.Paintings found on the walls and ceilings of ancient Korean tombs in-dicate that tae kwon do,or something similar to it,has been practiced in Korea since about 50 B.C.Also,records of a specially trained group of young warriors called Hwarang explain how these young men were taught taek kyon(an early form of tae kwon do)along with history, philosophy, ethics, archery, riding, and sword fighting.Members of the Hwarang were also encouraged to travel throughout Korea in order to learn about the people who lived in all regions of the country. This helped spread the practice of taek kyon throughout Korea.Eventually taek kyon, which was practiced for exercise and sport was replaced by subak, another martial art .The purpose of subak was specifically fighting,so members of the military were required to learn it.However, people's interest in subak died out over time.By the 1800s,few Koreans actually practiced subak. After Korea was invaded in 1909,authorities put an end to the practice of all martial arts in the country. In the long run, this ban actually led to increased interest in martial arts, and secret groups began to practice subak again in the Buddhist temples hidden high in the mountains in Korea. After Korea gained its independence again in 1948,interest in many forms of martial arts grew around the country. The Korean Tae Kwon Do Association was formed in 1961,and this was followed by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in 1973.Today,tae kwon do enjoys great popularity around the world.More than 20 million people practice tae kwon do in more than 120 countries.Tae kwon do was also made an official demonstration sport in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul,Korea.41.Tae kwon do means_____.[ A ].martial arts[ B ].the art of kicking and punching[C ].taek kyon or subak[ D ].younger warrior42.How is tae kwon do different from other forms of martial arts?[ A ].The movements are straight.[ B ].It is practiced by men and women.[C ].It uses powerful kicks.[ D ].The movements are flowing.43.What was the Hwarang?[ A ].A kind of martial arts.[B ].A group of warriors.[C ].A kind of painting.[ D ].An early form of tae kwon do.44.Where did Koreans practice martial arts after being invaded in 1909?[A ].In Buddhist temples.[B ].In sports competitions.[C ].In special schools.[D ].In tunnels.45.When was tae kwon do first seen at an Olympic competition?[A ].1948.[ B ].1973.[ C ].1961.[ D ].1988.BFrom the earliest times, man has been interested in art.People have often worked together to collect and save the world’s art treasures.Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre in Paris,France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. The Louvre has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort(炮台).In 1190,it was the king’s castle with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat to keep out his enemies.Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew.By 1350,the castle was no longer needed as a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens.During times of peace, new treasures were brought in.During days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged. When Francis I became king of France in 1515,he brought in artists from many countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da Vinci from Italy.Da Vinci’s”Mona Lisa"is the best known painting in the museum today. In 1793,the Louvre became a public museum, just as it is now.It is a place where art treasures have been saved for everyone to enjoy.46.On the whole, this passage is mainly about____。

Write your essay on Answer Sheet 1. There Is No End to Learning 正确答案:There Is No End to Learning A large number of people tend to live under the illusion that they had completed their education when they graduate from their schools. Obviously, they fail to take into account the basic fact that there is no end to learning. First of all, it is universally accepted that no college or university can educate its students by the time they graduate. Even the best possible graduate needs to continue learning before he or she becomes an educated person. Furthermore, as a famous saying goes, education is not complete with graduation. A college degree can never ensure long-term job success. Maintaining success in a job depends on education after graduation. Most importantly, learning is rewarding both materially and spiritually by enriching our life and perfecting our personality. In a word, learning is an invaluable career worth our life-long pursuit. No one should be content with just high school or college education.
(第1篇)You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don’t let jealousy spoil your relationships. Tackle it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think. It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that. Don’t appro ach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally conceited), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well. When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from tee swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how th at works out.Even the best of friendships can be tinged by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.解读:本文是关于人际关系的话题。
2013高考英语热门考点强化专练:阅读理解(一)(附详解).pdf
2009高考英语复习课堂限时强化训练——阅读理解(一) 1 “The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful,” says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral(道德) freedom. A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whoever the gods would destroy they first make them mad.” “Keep cool,” says Webster, “anger is not argument.” “Be calm in arguing,” says George Herbert, “for fierceness(狂怒) makes error a fault.” To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger,” says Pythagoras, “brings with folly and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him. Self-control is man’s last and greatest victory. If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also. (from 1. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. The importance of self- control.B. How to conquer oneself? C. The relation between a man’s moral freedom and his feelings. D. A man should keep cool. 2. What’s the meaning of “whoever the gods would destroy they first make them mad”? A. If you are mad, the gods will kill you. B. If you lose your temper first, gods will kill you first. C. If you can’t control yourself, you will be crazy. D. If the gods want to kill you, they will make you mad first. 3. Which of the following is NOT true, according to passage? A. The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself. B. You will make a small mistake serious if you don’t keep cool. C. You must measure a man’s strength by the power of the feelings which conquer him. D. Anger brings with folly and ends with regret. 4. Which of the following can’t help you avoid anger, according to the passage?A. Be calm in arguing.B. Check your temper or anger by speaking low.C. Keep your mouth shut.D. Try to make the other angry first. 2 Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values—this can’t be repeated too often—are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering(干涉) with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old. Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance(机械维修,保养) as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results will be. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it morally right to tryto push off death by seeking the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You can’t ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun. 5. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. The values are different between the old and the young. B. The moral problems raised by old people. C. The personal freedom for the old. D. Old people’s viewpoint on life. 6. We can know from the first paragraph that________. A. Very old people would like to live alone to have more personal freedom. B. Very old people are able to keep their room clean. C. Very old people like to live with their children. D. Social services have nothing to do with very old people. 7. According to the author, which of the following is right? A. The older a person, the more care he needs. B. Too much emphasis has been put on old people’s values. C. The human body can’t be compared to a car. D. It is easy to provide spare parts for old people. 8.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to “________”. A. their money or their health B. the conclusion you come to C. your talk to the old people D. whether age is happy or unpleasant 3 Together. 35 years. Yet even now its effects are showing themselves and may continue to do so for years to come. Much effort and human energy have been used to try to prevent such a terrifying thing from happening again. So far there is no guarantee that it will not. Countries which already possess nuclear knowledge and resources have bombs stored away which are powerful enough to wipe out all life on earth. But this is not all. Other countries, which previously were not so advanced in technology, are gradu ally buying materials that can be used for making atomic devices. This nuclear energy will naturally be of great value in helping the economy of poorer nations. The generation of electricity through nuclear power came directly from the original work on the atom bomb. Because of the increase in demand for energy and the possibility of decreasing supplies of oil and natural gas, the interest in electricity has increased. One of the by-products of nuclear power stations is plutonium (钸) produced from unclear fuel: plutonium is ingredient (成分) in bomb-making. It means that there are far more opportunities for the manufacture of bombs.Th is brings the problem to a full circle again. Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process. Song talked about her idea with school leaders, who agreed and thought the decorating would be a chance for students to show off their talents. Young artists from every grade couldn’t wait to sign up for the cool activity. They drew drafts (草图) and ended up with designs to change their school’s ugly, rusty old covers. Zhang Li, 15, painted a big colorful hot-air balloon flying against a blue sky and white clouds.“My work shows our dream of flying high,” Zhang explained. Hu Jingjie and Luan Qing, both 16, came up with a Peking Opera mask as a design. “Peking Opera is a symbol of our country. We want it to remind the school of our traditional culture,” Hu said. And Hou Feiya and Yang Lu, also 15, decorated a manhole cover with their favorite cartoon figure, Doraemon. “The robot cat is bright white and blue, which is eye-catching. And it smiles,” Hou said. Now it’s common to hear students exclaiming, as they walk around the campus, “how pleasing our manhole covers are to the eye”. 56. Why did the school leaders agreed on Song’s idea? A. Are you willing to take out your false teeth? These are just a few of the questions Anne Marie Stewart and her staff sometimes ask the "talent" who serve as non-speaking "extras" in special films, television series, and made-for-TV movies produced in Toronto. Phone lines are the only way to stay in touch with casting directors and extras; but the latter are a group not necessarily interested in a long-term relationship. Most extra jobs pay only $7 an hour (with a six-hour minimum), while most agencies charge an annual $75 registration fee and get 10 to 15 per cent of extras’ earnings. It's no wonder that the turnover rate is fairly high. Some people who are between jobs do extra work as a temporary measure, said McCartney. But professionals, such as lawyers, also do the work because it's interesting. Others with flexible jobs have a desire to do something different. Some homemakers want to get out of the house and onto a movie set. Money's not the motivating reason. "One of the first things I say to people who walk in and ask about being an extra is, ‘You have to be available,' "said a person at Karen Clifton Agency. Inc. Researchers at New Castle University in the United Kingdom have developed the French Digital Kitchen. Professors Paul Seedhouse and Patrick Olivier led the project. Professor Seedhouse told us that it works like a satellite navigation()systemin a car. The kitchen equipment and tools use motion sensor()technology. The sensors help a computer guide the students through instructions in French. The system can tell whether you've done what you were asked to do or not. For example, the system tells you to take some butter and cut it with a knife. There's a sensor on the package containing the butter so it can tell where the butter's being moved. The sensor in the knife not only knows that the knife is moving, but it also knows what motion the knife is making. So it can know whether the knife is cutting or not. And it doesn't go on to the next step of the program unless you've done what it senses you've done. Students can ask the computer to repeat the instructions or translate them into English. There are vocabulary lessons before and after the cooking. 69.The third paragraph mainly tell us .A.what the system isB. how the system worksC.what a motion sensor isD. how the system was invented 70.What does the underlined word “it” (in Para 5) refer to?A. She had always been in good shape during high school, but now, in her first year of college, she was suddenly ten pounds heavier. “My friends and I often had pizza or ice cream when we studied late at night,” she said, “and I was always drinking Coke to stay awake.” Celia’s experience is common. Many students enter college and find it so different that they cannot deal with changes properly. They’re away from their parents and in a new stressful environment. Pressures together with freedom to sleep and eat whatever they please cause many students to experience the “Freshman 15”: gaining weight suddenly in their freshman year of college. Most students do not realize that the “Freshman 15” can cause some serious health problems. Of course, college-age adults are still developing bone mass, so gaining some weight is normal. Sudden weight gain, however, puts too much strain(负担)on the heart and lungs, resulting in little energy and some difficulty thinking and remembering. In later life, it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and possible cancer. The solution to the “Freshman 15” is simple-pay attention to developing good habits! In general: ●Eat normal-sized meals at regular times. Eat slowly and enjoy it, so you don’t need to go backfor more. ●Keep only healthy snacks in your room-and don’t snack too often! ●Control drinking and smoking. Alcohol has a lot of calories, and smoking too much makes exercise difficult. ●Exercise regularly! Even just 30 minutes a day-such as walking quickly to class from yourdorm-will make a big difference! 【2012届江西临川一中冲刺卷】A How can you help kids cope with (应对) stress? It’s really hard for some people to come home after work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day —especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. 2013高考英语热门考点强化专练:阅读理解(十)(附详解).pdf
2009高考英语复习课堂限时强化训练——阅读理解(十) (1) The United States became a rich industrial nation toward the end of 1800s. There were more goods, more services, more jobs, and a higher standard of living. There was more of everything, including problems. One problem was monopoly, that is, to be the only seller of a certain line of products or a service. In some cases, several companies that manufactured the same product would agree not to compete with one another. They would all agree to charge the same price. These arrangements made it impossible for customers to shop around for lower prices for certain products. Some people decided that huge corporations had too much power and controlled too many markets. Because of their wealth and power, they could see to it that governments passed laws favorable to them. Many people believed that monopoly and price fixing were bad for customers and bad for the country so that they should be broken up. Finally the national government and some states passed laws that placed limits on corporations and big companies. These laws made it illegal for companies to make agreements to charge only a certain price. Later on the national government forced monopoly to be broken up. Such laws and government action didn’t entirely do away with monopolies. Nor did they stop the growth of huge corporations. But they did show that American people had decided that some of the changes that had occurred were harmful. (from 1. Which of the following is not true according to the passage? A. Big companies could not influence the government. B. A large number of markets were controlled by big companies. C. Many Americans were worried about the changes in their country. D. Some of the laws were in favor of customers. (2) When most people think of tropical islands, lined with white sandy beaches and bright blue seas, it is often the Caribbean or South Pacific that comes to mind. But for Chinese tourists who want a taste of paradise on Earth there is a new place to consider. Mauritius, an island lying off the southeast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, has just been added to China’s list of tourist destinations. Rich in history, natural beauty and culture, the island has been a popular destination for the world’s tourists for many years. On December 15 a total of eight African countries were added to the list. The others are Tunisia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Seychelles. The island has passed through the controlling hands of a number of European powers, including Dutch, French and British. In 1968, Mauritius won its independence. At present, over half the population of Mauritius is Hindu and another fifth is Muslim. Both groups are descendants(后裔) from workers brought to the island from India by the British. Some Chinese were also brought over to work. There are also descendants of African slaves and Franco-Mauritians, the original settlers of the island. One of the best things about the island is the food. There is a mouth-watering mix of European,Chinese and Indian flavours and seafood is very popular. A typical Mauritian dinner might have Indian chicken curry, Chinese pork, British roast beef and French-style vegetables. Boiled rice is served with just about everything. All that is washed down with a plentiful supply of local beer and rum(朗姆酒). The pleasant tropical climate and scenery provide the perfect setting to enjoy everything. The seais full of colorful life that lives around the coral reef. This makes Mauritius a wonderful place for swimming and diving. The coral reef (三) The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a significant role in the process of recovery from illness. As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries and into public place, some of the country’s most talented artists have been called in to transform older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms. These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester Hospital in Northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience. A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art and paintings, in the outpatients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduations. The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms, the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyard. The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expense when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong painkillers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at. 9. What does the author mean by using the phrase “to soften the hard edge of modern buildings”, in the second paragraph? A. To hold exhibitions of art and paintings in hospitals. B. To tear down the old hospital and build a new one. C. To decorate hospitals with art collection. D. To paint the walls of hospitals in soft colors. 10. What is true about Peter Senior? A. A famous doctor in Manchester Hospital and a talented artist. B. Britain’s first hospital artist and a patient in Manchester Royal Hospital. C. One of the six young art school graduations. D. A talented artist and a pioneer introducing art into hospitals. 11. What can we conclude from the fact that six young art school graduates joined Peter? A. Artists should take an active part in social activities. B. The role of hospital environment is being recognized. C. Artists are more important to patients in hospitals. D. Hospitals need more young art school graduates to attend the patients. 12. What does the last paragraph suggest? A. The improvement of hospital environment may help the patients recover from illness. B. The improvement of hospital environment may cost the patients more than before. C. The patients needed no painkillers when they had a view of a painting. D. The patients had no pain at all after the improvement of hospital environment. ?【答案与解析】 1. B 词义猜测题。
2013高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(26)及答案
2013高考英语二轮阅读理解精选(26)及答案AThe passengers on the subway who caught a glimpse of me may have thought I was strange. In particular a gentleman sitting opposite me was always staring at me, looking at the cheese bread on the floor in front of me and then staring back at me。
A passenger probably dropped it by mistake and got off at a previous stop, but the gentleman might not think so. “Next stop, St。
Patrick Station” - my stop was quickly coming up。
I had few minutes to either take the cheese bread, which nobody else was claiming, or left it there. In those few minutes I felt my pride getting in the way. “What would others on the subway think of me if I took the cheese bread? Would they think that I was poor and hungry?Would they think that I was stealing?”The ignorant thing to do was say “yes" to any of those self—imposed questions. Actually, they were just my own thoughts. Though I would leave the subway, walk a block to my office, get settled at my desk, and sit comfortably in my office for the whole day, I couldn't get rid of the enormous sense of guilt and regret. My thoughts once pushed me towards pride and ignorance, but finally I had to admit I was wrong. This missing cheese bread could be a gift for a homeless person who suffered from cold and hunger。

2013高考英语热门考点强化专练:阅读理解〔二〕〔含解析〕1Today, ultrasonic(超声的) waves are being put to work in laboratories and factories. If an ultrasound generator is placed in a liquid, the waves move the liquid back and forth hundreds of thousands of times each second. This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使溶解) in liquids. Paint manufacturers(制造商) use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors. The companies that make film for your camera find that mixing chemicals by the use of sound waves will produce a more sensitive film. The new lightweight(轻量的) type of washing machine uses ultrasonic waves to get clothes clean. Its special ultrasound generator is put into a pail of soapy water containing the soiled clothes. The sound waves drive the soapy water back and forth through the cloth so fast that everything is soon clean. There is also a new kind of dishwasher that works in much the same way.Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it. The liquid is actually torn apart by this action. Almost as soon as these holes are made, they fall together again. The result is a powerful pounding action. In the dairy industry this is used for the double purpose of making homogenized(使均匀,使匀质) milk and sterilizing(使无菌) it at the same time. If you look at some raw milk with a microscope, you find that it is made up of little drops of butter fat floating around in a watery liquid. In order to make milk easier to digest, these fat droplets(微粒) may be broken up by forcing the milk through very small openings. The result is called homogenized milk. When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces. (from nmet168 )1. Why does a paint manufacturer use ultrasound to do a better job of blendingcolors?A. Because it is cheap to use ultrasound to blend colors.B. Because the waves move the liquid so quickly that it can make materials mix quickly or dissolve in liquids.C. Because they can mix chemicals by the use of sound waves.D. Because the waves can clean the paint.2. What properties does ultrasound wave have?A. Homogenizes and sterilizes the milk.B. Mix materials and break droplets.C. Kill germs and sterilize milk.D. Move liquids quickly.3. What exists in the raw milk?A. Little drops of butter fat.B. Small holes.C. Fat droplets and germs.D. Chemicals.4. Where is ultrasound wave not used?A. In the paint manufacture.B. In the shop mixing bread flour.C. In the film-making company.D. In the dairy industry.2A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is for eve r wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset as well as others’. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great dealto do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He knows that he can not get through huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to.Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is a sign o f disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present.Unpunctual ity, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.5. What is an unpunctual person like?A. He always does a thing when it should be done.B. He is always very busy.C. He always does a thing at the wrong time.D. He always keeps the appointments.6. Why is unpunctuality very harmful?A. Because it makes a man lose many chances of doing important affairs.B. Because it makes a man lose friends.C. Because it makes a man work quickly.D. Keeping all other guests waiting.9. Why is a person always unpunctual?A. He is too busy.B. He has too much work to do.C. He does care much about time.D. He doesn’t manage his time properly.3What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam may take priority (优先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic/interest may have other choices. In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail — other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves. Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable — to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be ethical (符合道义的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or degrading. Persuaders may enlighten our mind or prey on our vulnerability. Ethical persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is necessary to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution (美国宪法).10. According to the passage, persuasion means ________.A. changing others’ points of viewB. exercising power over other peopleC. getting other people to consider your point of viewD. getting people to agree with you and do what you want11. The underlined word in the second paragraph “prevail〞 means________.A. winB. failC. speakD. listen12. The passage states that some people object to persuasion because they think it is ________.A. a danger to societyB. difficult to do wellC. unwelcome behaviorD. never successful13. The passage mainly discusses ________.A. how people persuadeB. why people persuadeC. that persuasion is both good and badD. that persuasion is important and it is all around us【答案与解析】1. B 事实细节题。

2013高考英语阅读理解〔4月〕训练〔29〕与答案阅读如下材料,从每题所给的四个选项〔A、B、C和D〕中,选出可以填入空白处的最优选项。
AAny foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of NatureNeuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).One of the study’s authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system〞.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A singlesyllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 nonChinese speaki ng volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi〞 in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study,Patrick C.M.Wong,said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.1. When learning Chinese,a foreigner will find ________.A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same timeB.he has an easier time learning music at the same timeC.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understandD.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch2. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.C.Because music training might help people with language study.D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.3. The underlined word “intoned〞 in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by theword “____〞.A.created B.spelledC.seemed D.pronounced4. What would be the best title for this passage?A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English SpeakersB.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language StudyC.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese LearningD.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs[参考答案 1—4、CBDB*********************************************************完毕4.〔2011·安徽卷〕BThink about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources〔来源〕, as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills〔风车〕began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind〔磨碎〕wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s, when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.【文章大意】本文介绍了风能与风能运用的情况。

2013高考英语热门考点强化专练:阅读理解〔五〕〔含解析〕1There are various reasons why cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though their sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (诊断), doctors can more easily recognize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly diagnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modem living, including heavy smoking and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions than before. We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the examination of the blood.Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct more than 90 percent of the time. The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully. The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂质). Cancers seem to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer. The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.1. Who will fail cancer from the study of the researchers?A. The young.B. The middle age and the older.C. The man.D. The woman.2. The underlined words "such a test" refer to________.A. the test that shows which persons have cancer and which don’t .B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its development,.C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is -smallD. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way3. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by cancer.C.X-raying is the best way to determined whether a person has cancer or not.D. Cancers have nothing to do with a person’s habits a nd living conditions.4. What would be the best title for the passage?A. A simple way to cancerB. Cancers can be curedC. How to find cancerD. Early discovery of cancer2As a human being you may have the choice of three basic attitudes towards life. You may treat life with the philosophy (哲学) of the vegetable, in which case your life will include being born, eating, drinking, sleeping, marrying, growing old and dying. The second basic attitude is to look at life as if it were a business. A great many so-called successful men and women believe that life is a business. If you believe so, your first question of life, naturally, is " What do I get out of it? " " How much is this worth to me?" In a word, based on this attitude, happiness becomes a matter of successful competition. The great majority of human beings today look at life as if it were a business. The third attitude toward life is the way of the artist. Here the basic philosophy is "What can I put into it?". They value cooperation and contribution. This point of view has been proved by history; for history remembers best those who have contributed most richly to the interests of their fellow-men. The more we investigate(调查),the more we become certain that the artistic attitude is the only one which goes with human happiness.5. From the passage we know people who take the second life attitude ________.A. are mostly businessmenB. think of getting the interests (利益) firstC. find their happiness from hard workD. take competition as their whole life6. People who are best remembered by history are probablyA. those living on vegetablesB. successful menC. artistsD. businessmen7. We may infer from this passage that ________.A. some people are living only on vegetablesB. the artistic attitude is accepted by most peopleC. the writer prefers the third life attitudeD. artists do most for the society in order to be remembered longer than others3The question of what children learn, and how they should learn, is continually being debated and redebated. Nobody dares any longer to defend the old system, the learning of lessons parrot-fashion, the grammar-with-a-whip system, which was good enough for our grandparents. The theories of modem psychology have stepped in to argue that we must understand the need of children. Children are not just small adults;they are children who must be respected as much.Well, you may say, this is as it should be, a good idea. But think further. What happens? "Education" becomes the responsibility not of teachers, but of psychologists (心里学家). What happens then? Teachers worry too much about the psychological implications (暗示) of their lessons, and forget about the subjects themselves. If a child dislikes a lesson, the t eacher feels that it is his fault, not the child’s. So teachers worry whether history is "relevant" to modern young children. And do they dare to recount stories about violence? Or will this make the children themselves violent? Can they tell their classes about children of different races, or will this encourage racial hatred? Why teach children to write grammatical sentences? Verbal expression is better. Sums? Arithmetic? No: Real-life mathematical situations are more understandable. You see, you can go too far. Influenced by educational theorists, who have nothing better to do than to write books about their ideas, teachers leave their teacher-training colleges filled with grand, psychological ideas about children and their needs. They make elaborate, sophisticated (精致的,复杂的) preparations and try out their "modem methods" on the long-suffering children. Since one "modem method" rapidly replaces another the poor kids will have had a good bellyful by the time they leave school. Frequently the modem methods are so sophisticated that they fail to be understood by the teachers, let alone the children; even more often, the relaxed discipline so essential for the " informal" feelings the class must have, prevents all but a handful of children from learning anything.8. People do not dare defend the old system mainly because under the old system________.A. too much grammar was taught to childrenB. children were spoiled (宠坏)C. children were treated as grown-upsD. children were made to learn passively(被动的)9. What view do the modem psychologists hold?A. Children must be understood and respected.B. Children are small adults and know what they need.C. Children are better off without learning lessons.D. Education of children is the responsibility of psychologists.10. What happens when teachers pay too much attention to the psychology of their lessons?A. They find that the children dislike the lessons.B. They tend to blame students for their failure.C. They do not pay enough attention to the actual lessons.D. They no longer want to teach children history.11. Grammatical sentences are regarded as unimportant because ________.A. it is better to use verbs onlyB. words are said out of natural feelings onlyC. talking freely and naturally without sentences is a better form of expressionD. it is felt that formal grammar rules might cause unnatural expressions12. According to the passage, the modern methods are understood by ________.A. neither teachers nor pupilsB. only a handful of teachers and pupilsC. the more sophisticated teachersD. everyone who enjoys the relaxed discipline of the informal classes【答案与解析】1. Long ago, in days of the Roman Empire, people used to believe a god of farmings called “Saturn”. They believed that Saturn could make the weather good or bad, and that he had the power to control how much rain would fall.
Before a Roman farmer would plant his fields, he would try to get Saturn to give him good weather. He believed that if he killed an animal for Saturn, that would make Saturn happy. Then Saturn would make sure that the weather was good.
Not only did the people name a planet after Saturn but they also name a day of the week after him. They called this day “Saturni dies”, Latin words which mean “day of Saturn”. In English those words became Saturday.
